  • The beginning of the DSM.

  • oh this is a awesome name

  • Lee Iacocca asked his engineers to build a sports car...........but they made this

  • All that trash talking for a car that was made from 1984-1986. Yep, Lee Iococca did a great job there. *cough cough* About the only thing he did right was convincing people that Chrysler's junk heaps were the best cars on the road. Basically, he was a good salesman and liar. That, and he sold a lot of minivans.

  • IT'S BETTER THAN EVERYTHING EVER!

  • gotta love that

  • What a shit box that car was.

  • Awesome. The 80's were a pretty sucky time for automobiles but I have a soft spot for the Laser. Both my parents had one when I was born and I was first brought home from the hospital in a black '85 1/2 Laser XE that we affectionately called "Darth" because of the talking feature and, apparently, this ad that I was too young to remember.

  • they make me what to get me one right now !! LOL

  • Cough deloren

  • i crash my laser but still love this : P

  • I still can't get over the way they referred to front-wheel-drive as a good thing. I wonder how many times people had to burn the inside-tire to a crisp, or experience massive understeer in an emergency maneuver before they realize it's just not a very good idea. Really, the only advantages I see for FWD are in ergonomics, because they leave very slightly more space in the cabin and in the minivan market that shit's important. But... a sports car? I'm glad we're going back - literally!

  • i have a friend that had a 1985 modle and this thing was very fast no bull

  • I had an '84 Laser XE and it was my favorite car ever! To all the haters....this car was for only the select few who truely appreciated it!

  • The 80s version of the Stig @ 0:22

  • so now i know why that car looks like a mustang, lmao the fwd mustang design by lee the mustang people. not gonna lie this car was ahed o its time still not a very nice thing to look @

  • love the car....not the front wheel drive >.<

  • Ilovemylaserihadsexinit

  • lol I had the car tell me the right rear door was open a few times too. It also told me my hatch was open, which was fine, but it also told me my trunk was ajar. Some cold mornings, it would just say "l;askdhfahdlfhwe;lfrhwas;ldfh"

    Strange car.

  • one day i've drove a crap like this whit a 3.0 grand caravan swap, that was funny :P

  • 99% of Chrysler Lasers & Dodge Daytonas are now recycled metal! Very Unreliable Vehicles!

  • we did.

  • they build only one generation of this car, i think it means something bad....

  • i have one as my stock car.

  • Sharp-looking, unique American styling. I guess it was so hard to decide for a car with so many cool cars back then.

  • my dad had an 85 xt turbo.

  • I have an 86 turbo lol bought it for 250, the kid had no idea what he was selling

  • @Ebaum744 thats so lucky man! keep it real!

  • This commercial is better than some sci-fi movies!

  • Stigs granpa driving.

  • I love my 84 turbo z. Lookin to get a shelby turbo or shelby charger.

  • @HeroCasey NP :)

i'm a huge mopar fan. and even bigger 2.2/2.5 turbo fan. it's amazing what power these engines can put out if you maintain them properlly. I had a 91 LeBaron with the 2.5l turbo hi-tq (american turbo, not a mitsu like the others) that put out 152hp/210lbs (instead of 150hp/180lbs) ran 15.6's stock. 1800 dollars worth of mods. ran between 14.4's and 14 flat

  • @HeroCasey 84/85's yea.

i know in 87 the camaro had a HP boost. and i think the supra came off the celica supra platform in late 86 (known as a 86 1/2? dont quote me on that. not an import guy)

with a nice power to weight ratio, 2.2l turbo good for 146hp. with both other cars weighing 400lbs or more(supras a pretty heavy). with only putting out maybe 30 more hp tops. and the camaro having a N/A V8

  • Darth Vader is a salesman xD

  • In 86 I bought a brand new flash red with black interior. Laser XT. all digital . That car got lots of looks back then.

  • It looks quite serious!

  • my dad has an '86 crystler lazer xe .......its got a garrison 2 turbo in it! ....it packs a definate punch. i love it

  • MAKE IT BREAK NEW GROUND IN ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY......lol thats still a sweet commercial, very creepy music...!!!

  • awesome car was the laser. but...... faster than the camaro Z28 and the trans am??? WTF???? the Z28 and trans am both had a 5.0ltr tuned port injection V8

the laser had a puny V6. 2 very diffrent things to compare

  • Haha, nope. The Chrysler Laser never had a 6 cylinder, but instead a 142-146 HP Turbocharged 2.2 Liter, 4 cylinder motor.

  • From what I've read, they had an available 3.0 litre v6. I wouldn't doubt if Camaro z28 and Trans Am was faster. But still I love this 80s car and I want one someday.

  • The V-6 was made available in 1990 for its sister model, the Dodge Daytona, about 4 years after the production of Chrysler Laser was cancelled. I could be wrong here but the 1987+ LeBaron coupe was the continuation of this car instead.

  • Indeed the LeBaron succeeded the Laser, sadly, with was a downgrade instead of an upgrade. :'(

  • Why a downgrade? Some of those LeBaron's were loaded with options (and in my opinion better quality interior components) than the Laser/Daytona. The LeBaron even came with the Turbo II (and perhaps Turbo IV?). I think it was a better move, because the Daytona was marketed for the younger generation while the LeBaron was for the more mature.

  • The first LeBaron coupes had the exact same interior.

  • Same dash, center console, and etc. But the darn door panels were much better. The LeBaron arm rests don't have the issues Daytona's do, which kinda ticks me off, but eh...

  • They had different options. You could get a few different 4cylinder engines, turbo and nonturbo 2.2L and 2.5L, or you could get the Mitsubishi 6cylinder which wasn't nearly as fast as some of the 2.2L with turbos.

  • You mean the LeBaron, right? The Laser never came with a 6 Cylinder.

  • I can understand why you want one. It was a great car; my wife bought one brand new. We ended up trading it in on a minivan in the early 90's when the babies started coming. Had fun with it though; good memories.

  • I still own an 84 laser turbo xe ,I hear they are hard to find now? i hear they are worth some bucks now too..

you know anything about this cars value?

  • Na, can't help ya pal. I'm pretty far removed from keeping up on them. But enjoy the car!

  • In near perfect condition, around $4000.00

  • You can find Daytonas, but DAMN is it hard to find a Laser.

  • Much faster. Turbo engines, lighter cars, more aerodynamic. Have you seen some of the 4cylinder engines with the turbos? Some will do around 150MPH. Fast enough Daytona's (the sister car to the Laser) went from 0-60MPH in like 6 seconds.

  • This car would be airborne at 150 mph. I used to get mine up around 90 mph and it would get pretty squirelly.

  • also, when i used to do stupid shit when i was a kid in town in it, i hid from cops trying to find me easily. see, i had ghost flames on mine but at night you couldnt see them. I all got to my friends house once with a cb and they were talkin about a white mustang doing the same thing that i had just been doing. people would ask if it was a trans-am or camaro sometimes too just because off the way the front end looked. lot of memories in that thing... ...miss it dearly.

  • Wow. That is truly, shockingly ugly. Was this car actually any good?

  • my dad has one when i was a youngin, all i remember is that it had an ASSLOAD of turbo lag, but it was pretty nice, black leather + t-tops not so fun either

  • dude, i used to have one and we rebuilt the whole engine to original spec with a new turbo and everything except mine was an 86 XT. that thing hauled ass. it handled hella nice too. i was taking local tuners around corners. basically, all the mitsubishi's engines were made based on the lasers when mitsu bought chrysler and all there 2.0 and 2.2L are still based off of the original chryslers. as for the PLYMOUTH lasers, they sucked balls. lol

  • Mitsubishi never bought Chrysler Corp, and the 2.2-2.5 Chrysler engines are not related to any Mitsubishi engines. They were designed and built by Chrysler. However, Chrysler did use the 2.6 Liter Mitsubishi engines in the early 80's.

  • There was the laser, the neon, any other chrysler cars named after light fixtures?

  • my dream car! looks some what like a 1979 mustang

  • somewhat mpre reminiscant of a certain austrailian 1973 Ford Falcon XB Coupe.

  • omg yeah

  • lol this is the stigs first gig

  • lmao it sure does.

  • seems to be

  • My dad had an '85 XE. I hit the "test" button on the computer console about 4000 times and it was dead by '87. You have no idea what that talking computer meant to an 11 year old kid back then!

  • "In an insane world, it was the sanest choice."

-Sarah Connor, TERMINATOR II: JUDGEMENT DAY

  • this was my first car! haha. the paint job was so terrible but it was tough. survived 3 accidents.

  • I had a 84 Laser XE Turbo. Coolest junk box on the road. They all but melted to rust on contact with the elements.

Such a cool car though. When it started telling me the right rear door was open in a 2 door setup I started to get worried.

  • well shit, if its good enough of a car for lord vader then its more than good enough for us mere padawans.

  • From zero to fifty? couldn't it do 60mph?

  • Those were the day's where the national speed limit was 55 MPH.

  • And everybody did double that :)

  • i like the way that guy talks :D

  • That's James Earl Jones, the voice of Darth Vadar in the Star Wars movies. I'm going to get heckled for even mentioning it.

  • nah, no heckling. good call on mr. jones. props to you.

  • If you dont like this car fuck you!!!!

  • @franktib This was my favourite Chrysler car of the 1980s.

  • haha, awsome commercial, my question is, with turbos only lasting like 80k miles, do you think there are any Laser Turbos that are still working that have not been replaced?

  • Well, the good news is, Chrysler and Volvo were the only two companies that were smart enough to use Water and Oil cooling for the Turbo. And for that reason, I know those who have more than 200K miles on their original engine and turbo. Never needed to be rebuilt.

  • well thats good news because i just bought a 1988 dodge 600 turbo 2.2l turbo and its only got 108 thousand k on it anyways thanks for your comment about turbos i never knew that about them lol

  • i drive a 1985 Crhysler laser xe with turbo it has ran with 100% stock since ten till bout 06 when my bro had and he striiped trans so i ask when he bout an 04 mitsu ricer if i could have he said yes so had to replace trans but the trans that went in is not out of a laser instead an 86 dodge caravan i love my shes my baby LASER XE TURBO WAY TO GO BABY

  • im thinking about buying a laser an i have a couple questions, how long do the turbo's last

what is the stock boost? howmuch boost can it run on the stock engine before there is risk of damage, how do they run? hows the reliabilty ,how expensive/hard to find are parts?

and is an 85 with 79k miles worth $850?

  • Virtually ANY car which actually runs is worth 850 dollars. 850 dollars is nothing as far as used cars are concerned. You should be willing to spend 2 to 5K on any 80's car that you expect to be in very good condition mechanically and cosmetically.

  • I spent 600.00 bucks on my '87 New Yorker...it's in good shape, the car runs well, and it's comfy.

  • Aww wish mine had the turbo :(

  • it has a night rider to it lol

  • A car only Darth Vader could love! Cool Ad!

  • "Chrysler Daytona's Father" - exellent car =)

  • I owned an 86 XE Turbo and it never beat any Mustangs or Camaros. But the digtal dash and talking on board computer was cool!

  • i beat my bro and his 07 eclipse after he totaled his lancer 1 time when he first got

  • It sounds like James Earl Jones.

  • thanks james earl jones.

  • the commercial made it look better than they actually looked, which of course is true with most commercials except for Yugos, but the laser looked lame on the street, IMHO.

  • bullshit mine is still prestine it looks great in silver 2

  • I pretty much agree. Car commercials always glamorize the look of a car. The lazer always looked lame to me even as a child when these were new. It's always struck me as looking like an economy hatchback trying to be sporty.

  • looks like the car in the movie madmax, lol

  • Lol Darth vader deushbag.

  • use the forced air induction, luke.

  • I owned this car. Then the hole in the radiator owbed me.

I drive a Jeep SUV now... Not very often, however.

  • That car looks sharp, especially being black with a black leather interior. Does anybody know if these cars are now collector's items? I used to see one every now and then but there just aren't many around anymore.

  • Probably one of the cheesiest car commercials of the 1980s-90s. Digital Display, a Terminator-like Voiceover and old computer graphics. All that was left to do was to show the cassette player along with a rubix cube.

  • This was the early '80's. This stuff was in-style then...the voice-over (James Earl Jones), the cheezy electro music, the computer graphics. This was top shelf buddy. Have you even seen an early 80's Mustang or Camaro? Gag me.

  • lol rubux cube and cassette player that made my day man

  • if im not mistaken that was james earl jones doing the voice over!!!!

  • Had one XT since august of 86... ttops etc. lasted until 2001 and it was still running. 6 years later, happened to run into an old man who had one garaged sitting there with 29k original miles! same firengine red ttop etc. couldnt pass that up. badass all around.

  • ROTFL. LOVE IT!!! I miss my 85 XT Turbo so bad now. It's KITT + Gadgetmobile + Autobot = HOTTT. "Your keys are in the ignition. Please close your driver door!" Yeah, talk to me, baby!!

  • I got 14 years out of one of these. Had to be a record of some kind. But it WAS fun to drive.

    Was that James Earl Jones?

  • i own one of these and its the best car ive ever owned

  • Did the Chrysler Laser in this commercial have a gentle chime when you had the door open with the keys in the ignition or did it have the Electronic Voice Alert system?

  • The one I used to own had the EVA - I think that was on the XE trim level only.

  • I owned an '86 Laser much like the one in the commercial. Not the most beautiful car but handled quite nicely with decent power, I miss the vocal gauges.

  • "All monitored systems are functioning."

  • OMG Thank you for posting this video! I had one of these and LOVED it.

  • Beautiful? No. Nice looking from certain angles. Ok. This was a pretty cool sporty car for it's time.

  • It was quite amazing how Chrysler built so many smaller models in the 1980s - all spun off the front-wheel drive K-CAR platform!!!

  • One of the most beautiful Chryslers ever!

  • Frikkin cool !
