Just discovered this guy. Really great 2012 with 80's influences synthpop! Does anyone know if he produces his own tracks or he just writes the lyrics and sings?
One of my favourite tracks of last year - an absolute beauty. So I bought the album it comes from on the strength of it without listening to any of the other tracks - huge mistake! Mostly Sisters of Mercy/Goth pastiche & a universe away from this song. Still glad I paid him though!
I keep coming back to this track to play it very loud in my dark and lonely house when all my roommates are off someplace else. Drink beer and get all melancholy, feels good.
@daftrhetoric What the hell is a language obsessed oracle? How do oracles have anything to do with language obsession, and why "ought" these language-obssessed oracles be deep? I'm confused. But I love this.
@vbmatak He professes a strong belief in exploration of expression and language, in his duty as an artist to 'make intensive use of a major language'. An oracle is a genius, an authority, someone sage, someone who invokes the concepts of broader agency accessible to them through study and inquiry into the minds of many via language. Considering the essential axia of many cultures, individuals, steeps a person to the point of perspicuity. He's like Noam Chomsky or Steven Pinker.
By the way, this album version is not that bad. But don't even dare to try this in concert... It's that much awful that i'm still in pain 4 hours after the concert. He got a real good sound engineer on this, but he doesnt have him in concert. He's just having a poor (out of loud) reverb that make this sounds like a teenage amateur's concert.
I still feel robbed for the 20€ i've spend.
And the way he moves... He's headbanging out of the rythm... I'm still crying about it.
I'm just out of his concert... I will take time to cool down and be fair.
It's been one of the worst concert ever in my life, and i got something like 300+ concerts. The worst thing i've noticed is that guy is dancing out of the rythm of his own music. It's something i cannot understand. He's using reverb to camo his voice, and even with that, his singing is ruining the music.
If i had any tomatoes around my hand i would have throw them in his face with a real pleasure. Now i got to wash my ears
@imarocksinger I love when you can spot such copy cats, I do it all of the time. Thing is that you just failed doing so. What you want to look for is the basspattern/drumpattern/bouild of the whole song/way of singing/melody. What you are not looking for is a phrase like "belive" (the one you found). To do a correct copy-spoting we can take don't answer me and easily see how this sooner is a copy of ABBAs the winner takes it all, and WHAMS! last christmas.
@IStehSHIT ok to be fair, this song REMINDS me of don't answer me. not lyrically, but musically. and both winner takes all and last christmas are reminiscent of this track as well.
the album version is really lacking compared to this one... its a shame that i have to use a youtube to mp3 converter to get this song in my collection.
Amazing! It sounds like in my childhood, when I am on my old radio took such wonderful songs like this, in which I did not understand a word, but the tunes are still sounding in the my head:)
This guy appears to be way ahead of the curve. A vanguard of a new renaissance? Is the human race poised to rediscover its innate aspiration for transcendence? I dunno, I hope so. Anyway, in the meantime this makes me tap my foot and air drum with gusto.
@srrecords Really? By The Dream Academy? Borderline in what sense, sonically or in sentiment? With respect, I find it hard to discern any similarity. However, listening to "Life in a Northern Town" does take me back though to the halcyon days of my youth so thanks for the reminder :)
@vodkabitter Thanks for your advice. This beautiful song helps me relaxing but I would also know the meaning/intention of this song. I guess that there is a basis of social criticism in it: e.g., are "Jackie Chan" and "Hulk Hogan" taken as examples of turning people addicted to stupid tv programs into couch potatoes?
Indeed, it's a wonderful song but I'm afraid that I don't understand its meaning/intention. Why for example are selected "Jackie Chan" and "Hulk Hogan" among other famous actors? Just because they are very famous "professional" fighters? Moreover, I don't see the connection of the lyrics with what the chorus say ("They call me a believer"). Thanks in advance.
I'm sure you don't make better music whilst masturbating, and if so then that's amazing. I'm pretty sure most people don't have music emanating from their dick when they jerk off, but if you do then that's some serious skill!!!
why is the album version of this (or at least the one i heard on spotify) slowed down? (or this is sped up) then again, i'm pretty sure when i saw john perform this he performed it fast
@incubusrok So classically composed music is also dead, by your logic that is? After all it has been around for many centuries replicating fairly similar sounds. I like your description of this track though...a bit harsh but funny. Oh and why does your name have 'rok' in it? Are you a rock necrophiliac?
Can't they just accept that rock is dead rather than produce this trite bullshit and continually remind us? This sounds like if stellastarr* hired my grandma to mix their first record, and then outsourced it to a bunch of cats playing in a cardboard box. You're all stupid.
I was soo into Kate I wait 6 years ago because it was absolutely unlike anything else out there. It is insane (and fantastic) that this kind of music is building.
lol music grabs influence from all over and I highly doubt anyone is truly original anymore. To push the envelope and to try new things there has to be influence from somewhere. Even in the no wave movement there were several people all coming out at the same time in New York. It's bound to happen that some band is going to sound like another band or he is going to sound like this. Just sit back enjoy the sound and appreciate his viewpoint and how he is approaching the music.
this guy has sounded like this since 2007, you want to confuse him with modern day chill wave or think hes copying ariel pink (he's co-accompanyinthg them), then be my guest but its not like he's compromised his sound to appeal to hipsters

I do really love his album and the ace analogue synths. But im not sure it's a good thing becoming a "scene". It's not really pushing music forward but taking a nostalgic trip back in time. Don't get me wrong it's good but i find people like Bibio for example have taken on board these influences and brought out something totally unique.
@JoeBloggo400 Yeah, I noticed that too. On the album it's slowed down. Doesn't sound as good. Kinda a HUGE bummer cause that's why I bought the record!
