Have you ever used the Bowline-on-a-bight? I just learned it --- great for making the bowline in the MIDDLE of the rope when you don't have an end handy. (and as always: kick-ass vid, kick-ass info. Keep 'em coming.)
That fisherman's knot is cool and everything, but it's a bitch to untie. First try a sheet bend, then the figure 8 bend, or my preference the ultimate knot, the Zeppelin Bend to join two ropes.
If you want to know the reason for bowline instead of 8-knot to tie around an object: It is pretty hard to tie an 8-knot around an object that is a "closed loop". For example, tie a bowline around ring-formed object.
Great "Quick One-Shot Movie" as you SAID edwyrd. Too bad the trolls on youtube didn't catch that. GREAT VID BRO. (plz ... people... don't flame for saying "bro", if any you ladies wanna be called "bro"?... /shudder) :)
What about the slip-knot??? Isn't that important??? And I have another question, what is a knot that untied when you pull it? I'm 15, made an airsoft claymore, but for a tripwire , it needs to untie itself when pulled, and most now-a-day knots are designed to not do that.
@Tofugrass checkout "Graves Bushcraft Books" (available online) section on snares and traps. Not sure if what you're looking for is so much a knot, probably be interested in "figure-4" snare mechanism. A great trigger but it can be a little fiddly and takes time to create, there are a lot of options. Just don't go making yourself a pig sticker or anything with too much force and end up killing a mate.
@fireballfury1 i am not sure, however i would think a figure 8 would put less stain on the rope, now like i said, i am not sure, any one out there have an answer for the man? thanks for question, later ed.
The bowline is good for a couple reasons: 1. It won't jam so it can always be untied, and 2. it retains 80% of the strength of the rope. In other words, a rope with a 600 lb strength test will still handle 480 lbs without snapping.
These are important knots to know indeed. The double knot may not bind with para chord, but it does with most other materials. I thought this was worth mentioning.
@poopeybritches Yes, well, while I usually converse on a more polished level, sometimes however – the little redneck ogre in my mind, the part from my childhood, that I has kept locked up, mostly, in a'dam huge, farking big heap o'chains, for the saf'ty of all around, does manage ta get'oot! somtines It'll jus happen, what can'ya do? I axe ya, what can'yas do? Thank-you! for your comments and viewing my videos. Later Edward.

Great info...but... I don't want to sound like a feminist or anything, because I'm not, but men aren't the only ones who need to know how to tie knots. If a person is lost in the woods and trying to survive, it doesn't matter what gender they are. They need to know how to survive in the woods and that includes how to tie proper knots. So maybe in your next video, you can remember this and keep the "every man should know" part out. Just a suggestion since I found it really sexist. Just sayin'
@catinreno man also implies woman because the word woman has the word "man" in it. For instance when people say all of mankind they talk about women to....its not sexist.
@Str33tFiGhTeR1 "Man" does not imply men & women in his video. Let's b real here. Again, not trying 2 b politically correct or anything, nor am I trying 2 start any arguments. I just think, & as @edwyrd shows in his reply 2 me, the comment was sexist. Instead of "every man should know" how about "everyone should know". I'm just sayin' that there are women out there like me who enjoy the outdoors and survivalist tools. No reason to use exclusive language. That's all. Thx 4 the video @edwyrd.
@catinreno Not trying to start an argument? Then why the hell did you leave such a ridiculous comment? How about instead of trying to correct some nomenclature. Just watch the video and try to learn something. The man is taking his time to help you and you slap him in the face.
He was saying it to convey that men should know these to be less clueless and better prepared. Men today would rather get manicures than learn something useful. Not that women cant or shouldnt...
Men Should so that we can do manly things and take care of our weaker sex GF and wives. "Just sayin" Have a nice day ;)
@catinreno It's only sexist if you make it sexist. I doubt he meant any harm by what he said, seeing how it is somewhat of a figure of speech. Want to be treated the same as a man? Then don't complain when you get called one ;)
The second figure 8 you tied was technically a figure 8 follow threw(and so was the time you hsowed how to use the figure 8 to join 2 ropes). And I am a rescue worker and we use the firgure 8 way more than the boline. Th only time we use the boline is when we need to tei a knot one handed (if you don't know how PM me). And the 3rd knot is called a grape vine.
how i learned the figure 8 is its a fish break its neck twice and stab it in the eye also i think you should include the clove hitch as one of the most important knot

I like the "Overhand Fisherman's Knot" kinda 2 figure 8's. Good for when you want to adjust the length by sliding the knots.
