Riel tried to establish a "provisional government" explicitly hostile to MacDonald based largely on tribal association. There is no "Metis land" in the absence of a legitimate property rights regime. A "people" like the "Metris" (of which Riel was 1/8th! - on that grounds, I'm part African and I own part of Africa - only one of his grandparents was an Indian) cannot own huge swaths of Canada on the basis of some alleged collectivist-tribal premise. Thomas Scott was murdered.

The only time I fought french canadians was when they outnumbered me 5 to 1 and as soon as I stood my ground two or more would attack from behind for they had not the guts or self respect to face me in Mano a Mano combat. @lightswch I'm a 30 year old male living in Toronto and born elsewhere in Ontario to parents of mixed decent (British/Dutch/Italian/Slovak) who speaks English at home and I can also speak French. I just want to state that what the British have done to Québec throughout history is a crime. The current country of Canada needs to shake their heads. Though I'm partially of British decent and my first language was English, my opinion is that we need to get rid of the monarchy in this country.

It would be an economic disaster and the region might never recover from it. The problem here is central Canadian and Anglo arrogance and disrespect. Quebec belongs to Canada by the Treaty of Paris (1763) in which the French Empire ceaded New France to the British Empire so that it could keep the French West Indies. The succssors of the British Empire in North America is the Dominion of Canada. Quebec was never a country but either a colony or a province.
