I strongly believe that the only similarity between Christianity and Fundamentalism are the words. There is nothing Christian about Fundamentalists at all ... a lot of religious zealotry, a lot of dogma .. and a lot of non identifying with society, but nothing at all about Christ. I was a Fundamentalist/Evangelical for over 50 years, still a Christian but I can't imagine ever returning to the Fundamentalist or Evangelical church. It is a shabby pretense to Christianity.

The verdict in favor of that insane 'pied-piper' of a pastor Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist ministry serves as an example. They will be allowed to continue with their reprehensible, un-Christ like behaviour to serve as fuel for the fire, set in the minds of society that ALL Christians are as they are.

@BradJC70 As an Episcopalian, I probably believe very similarly to people in the Catholic Church, other than some social issues that the heirarchy of the RCC officially proclaims. The only think I know of where the Catholic Church is taking a black eye right now is in the Pedophile situation, and in their virulent attack on marriage equality. On both of those issues, I believe that they should be brought to task, however as far as a church, I guess I don't know about any assaults off hand.

@BradJC70 I am actually very liberal on social issues; as I believe Jesus was. If you know anything about Jim Wallis and Sojourners, that is what I believe true living Christianity is about. There are Christians involved there from every denomination (including Catholic). Remember that Dorothy Day, among others, was very liberal as well. In my opinion it is fundamentalist "christians" who are the greatest threat to this country, not liberals.

Jesus never taught "accepting" - in fact, the writers of the New Testament warned against blending doctrines and teachings NOT taught to them by Christ and the early Church. Take the "feel good, be nice" Christianity advice with a grain of salt. Christ is the ONLY way to salvation. "Broad is the way that leads to destruction." Just because people today don't "survey" well with mainstream Christianity, does not mean the original teachings aren't still valid today. Tread carefully.

It is a good practice for anyone who has strong beliefs for or against religion to know how to communicate with those who they would like to open their minds. It seems there is a division rather than a debate. Let each side express their beliefs and carefully conduct yourself when answering with your opinion. What he has to say is very important. But I believe it's also important not to battle the one method by simply doing the opposite of it. You must have a balanced theology, based upon the truth of scripture, and employ it in the Love of Christ. Are you literally saying that the Bible never says be committed to my word? The Word became flesh and our means of understanding him, his teaching, the promises of God (both good and bad) come directly and soley from Scripture. The bible shows you what true love is and how to live it out. If you think you have that figured out minus scripture then you're lost.
