Amen. The notch in the belt comment hits the nail on the head! Its All about LOVE folks. Without Charity (The pure love of Christ) we are NOTHING. Even with all faith and all knowledge and tons of good works. If the LOVE isn't there, we are dross! You can't fake it either. God knows our hearts. People pick up on hypocrisy pretty well also.
I strongly believe that the only similarity between Christianity and Fundamentalism are the words. There is nothing Christian about Fundamentalists at all ... a lot of religious zealotry, a lot of dogma .. and a lot of non identifying with society, but nothing at all about Christ. I was a Fundamentalist/Evangelical for over 50 years, still a Christian but I can't imagine ever returning to the Fundamentalist or Evangelical church. It is a shabby pretense to Christianity.
Unfortunately, the assault on Christianity will continue and the acts committed upon Christians will grow in violence and intensity. We know this to be true as told by Jesus Christ. The U.S.govt., among others, has shown their true colors as far this trend has progressed. They aren't favorable...
@LifterwiII No. I don't believe I am. The 'assault' I speak of is at this point, is focused upon Christians of the Catholic church. The 'Fundamentals', are being used to advance this agenda. The verdict in favor of that insane 'pied-piper' of a pastor Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist ministry serves as an example. They will be allowed to continue with their reprehensible, un-Christ like behaviour to serve as fuel for the fire, set in the minds of society that ALL Christians are as they are.
@BradJC70 As an Episcopalian, I probably believe very similarly to people in the Catholic Church, other than some social issues that the heirarchy of the RCC officially proclaims. The only think I know of where the Catholic Church is taking a black eye right now is in the Pedophile situation, and in their virulent attack on marriage equality. On both of those issues, I believe that they should be brought to task, however as far as a church, I guess I don't know about any assaults off hand.
@LifterwiII I don't have the the time to list the many GLARING examples there are to speak of in the last year alone, but you can get a start by reading Persecution by David Limbaugh.
@BradJC70 I am actually very liberal on social issues; as I believe Jesus was. If you know anything about Jim Wallis and Sojourners, that is what I believe true living Christianity is about. There are Christians involved there from every denomination (including Catholic). Remember that Dorothy Day, among others, was very liberal as well. In my opinion it is fundamentalist "christians" who are the greatest threat to this country, not liberals.
@LifterwiII As well, the R.C.C. was hijacked long ago by those who care not for the values of Jesus Christ.
It is not the 'business' which the church has become, but the IDEALS of which it was founded upon, that a follower of Christ will try to live by. It's more than safe to say, that there are thousands, within the hierarchy of the R.C.C. who will never see that which is promised by the Father, for a life lived in his name...
Gabe sounds like a righteous guy but his message seems to be disingenuous if he's palling around with Chuck Colson. Colson doesn't want gay-straight alliance groups in schools because they teach kids that being gay is okay! Um...it is. But Chuck doesn't think so.
why dont all you people research the origins of religions. what came first and the history of man. there is no right religion and there is no wrong religion. There are however those that came first and sorry to say...they are not the abrahamic religions (judaeism, christianity and Islam) You live by the doctrines and it becomes real. The only wrong religion is the one forced upon people.
Whatever we may think about the various doctrinal and theological arguments that may divide us - Can we agree that JESUS is LORD - fullness of Love and Truth, Prince of Peace, the bringer of Grace and Holy Justice? Lord, help us all I pray.
Does Gabe Lyons understand the plain teaching that the world will hate you because of Jesus? That's a very basic tenet of the New Testament. Gabe has no point but to raise "surprise" when there isn't any. It enables him to make money from a non issue.
Jesus never taught "accepting" - in fact, the writers of the New Testament warned against blending doctrines and teachings NOT taught to them by Christ and the early Church. Take the "feel good, be nice" Christianity advice with a grain of salt. Christ is the ONLY way to salvation. "Broad is the way that leads to destruction." Just because people today don't "survey" well with mainstream Christianity, does not mean the original teachings aren't still valid today. Tread carefully.
@marcryan71 Fundamentalism and Evangelicalis are not mainstream Christianity. They are comparitively new movements on the "Christian" scene, and they hardly represent historical Christianity at all. There is little, if anything Christian about fundamentalism.
For the time will come when men will not put up with SOUND doctrine. Stan1208 - I agree. It seems the command to love is being twisted. Jesus loved sinners enough to tell them to STOP SINNING and repent. Else you will be cast into hell! Today people want love to mean allow the sin to continue and support those commited to breaking God's commands.
@Stan1208 Is there a reason why you completely pull 4 verses of scripture out of context in an attempt to validate your point? It's your snarky fundamentalist manner that I find totally offensive. Do you feel that maybe the drugs did some mental or emotional damage?
@LifterwiII Man! Isn't it past your bedtime? I mean really. Do you not use deductive reasoning??? Well, excuse me for doing so, because you started your lame diatribe for all of which this whole page, video, comments and hey, look to the right >> see all those little videos?? Yeah, there on homosexuality!! Okay, so no applause and you get nothing for being straight. So, after I've slapped down the last umpteen vindictive posts by you - do I dare even ask again -- DO YOU HAVE A POINT?
preaching the gospel based on youth focus groups is utter nonsense. we don't understand the 'feelings' of youth? the 'youth' need to understand their 'feelings' are temporary, and that hell is eternal. small upside, infinite downside. the secular culture teaches their 'feelings' are OK. read the bible. pray. live the word of god. tell the truth. don't dumb it down. don't water it down. you don't have to judge others, but you don't have to stay silent in the face of sin and injustice.
This is EXACTLY the type of response that Unchristian discovered.....Christians don't take time to listen. Your response clearly indicates that you did not take time to listen or understand what Unchristian is saying. They NEVER said to "stay silent in the face of sin and injustice."
It is a good practice for anyone who has strong beliefs for or against religion to know how to communicate with those who they would like to open their minds. It seems there is a division rather than a debate. Let each side express their beliefs and carefully conduct yourself when answering with your opinion. Respect the person, not necessarily their beliefs and don't assume you are going to change them by just throwing your personal feelings at them. Find common ground, then proceed.
Fundamentalists almost operate in fear of the modern world, which ultimately will first cause their marginalization and self-isolation and finally, their disappearance.
Jesus' preaching and his program were stood on their head when Constantine made Christianity the state religion of the Roman Empire.
The facts of history show that the basic kernel of nonviolence, help for the poor and spreading the teachings of Jesus were hijacked to serve and maintain the power of Empire.
I feel what Gabe researched is absolutely the truth of 1. Where our culture is. 2. What "future belivers" see how present believers behave. 3. Just the "language" we use is absorb. Seriously... Jesus modeled what it is we should be doing, we have to stop justifying our excuses start owning up to our selfishness. Love all, all the time.
As a mother of young people, I can tell you that I am very discouraged. I tried to listen, show compassion, and not be judgmental to my daughter's atheist boyfriend.I tried to listen. I have received disdain, disrespect. When my son almost cursed him out, he listened. My basics of Biblical Christianity was viewed as soft and easy to walk over.
You have proved your judgement by refering to your daughters boyfriend as athiest. I have received more disdain and disrespect from supposed christians than from anyone else.
He referred to HIMSELF that way. It was not my judgement but HIS label that he gave himself. I think that is what is so very discouraging. It makes me want to give up sometimes. Christians are so bashed and instead of reading the Bible or trying to understand many comment about things they DON't know anything about or label without thinking. It is really discouraging.
I'm definitely not saying that we should bash homosexuals, or be hypocrites, as long as you love while doing it. That would be ridiculous.
No, we mustn't allow those things to continue, but we can't throw out the baby with the bathwater. The truth is still the truth, but if it's not spoken with love, it can be very destructive.
Sadly, these days many attempt to portray half a Saviour, bringing His love to the world, without also boldly illuminating His love with His truth! Jesus is THE way, THE truth, and THE life! He is the same yesterday, today and forever! Heresy always breeds more evil, and the closer any lie comes to the heart of the Gospel, the more diabolical is the fruit it bears.
What he has to say is very important. But I believe it's also important not to battle the one method by simply doing the opposite of it. You must have a balanced theology, based upon the truth of scripture, and employ it in the Love of Christ. If you simply have the actions of love, without the truth behind it, you may win the unbelievers favor, but you've done nothing to point them to the real Jesus.
The "real" Jesus. Preached love so if you serve him with love where is the problem. Scripture has nothing to do with it did he say "you must read my scripture" no but he said you must love others. As christians we are not trying to win unbelievers favor, we are simply trying to show them a better way of life through our actions. Your nitpicking is exactly what Gabe Lyons is talking about. It is also the reason a large majority of people refuse christianity outright.
Are you literally saying that the Bible never says be committed to my word? The Word became flesh and our means of understanding him, his teaching, the promises of God (both good and bad) come directly and soley from Scripture. The bible shows you what true love is and how to live it out. If you think you have that figured out minus scripture then you're lost.
This on CNN? Who the hell CARES what Jesus would want? This is news?

If you simply have the actions of love, without the truth behind it, you may win the unbelievers favor, but you've done nothing to point them to the real Jesus.
It's a both/and proposition, not either/or.
