  • The only exceptions to this law are non indigenous species such as English Sparrow or Starlings. The best thing to do would be to bring an injured bird to a licensed rehabber, where it will have the greatest chance at survival. (BUT) I really respect what you tried to do here, and if you cannot find a rehabber in your area, feel free to message me and I will do all I can to give you the right info on food/husbandry etc.

    Cheers

  • Looks like you tried to do a nice thing. And I hope it makes you feel better to know that he was certainly flying at the end there. Of course, I don't intend this to come across as rude or uncaring, because I give you a lot of credit for trying to help the bird, but it is illegal to keep and/or rehabilitate a wild bird with a the proper license. Look up the Migratory Bird Act, if you like. I work at a wild bird rescue, so I promise that I'm not just making this up.

  • i know why he can't fly his wings are clipped maybe he was a caged bird who escaped

  • Pencil perch! Thats quite creative! lol You are doing a great job my friend taking care of the local injured and lost wildlife and then realeasing them back into the wild!

  • I figure it's the least I can do. I feel pretty responsible because it's my cats that keep bringing stuff in. I'll save what I can.

  • I have a sneaking suspicion that your little bird finally flew, since he had flown the previous time. I'm sorry you didn't get to know the final outcome though. I'm sure you would rather have known.

  • Thanks kalacaw. Yep, it was a bit of a disappointment not being able to see him take wing. I'm guessing he made it though. He seemed very frisky and healthy. One thing's for certain, he sure could run!

  • I have to hit the hay now. I'm falling asleep in front of this monitor, but I want to see the entire video. I'll be back first thing in the AM, and for part I as well.

You know, you're really a good egg. ;-)

  • you got a good heart and it shows. when u opened the cage it was deciding should i go out in to the cruel world where i won't even know if im gonna get a next meal or be one, or should i stay here where i have three hots and a cott lol.

  • Hopefully it's out there navigating the cruel world sucessfully!

  • Well at least you gave a great new start to whatever path he scurried off too!! He was a purdy birdy bird! ...

I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn! " ~ Thoreau

  • In retrospect I wish I'd kept him a few more days. I don't know if he flew or not but wow, that little bugger sure could run.

It's a good thing Thoreau isn't copyrighted. Half the world would be in copyright violation, LOL.

  • Birdy bird is some kind of stealth escape artist...

  • When he went under my van it was just like he vanished into thin air. I can't believe he gave me the slip like that.

  • You're a good egg Blinky.

  • Thanks Amiduffer!

  • You did the best possible. I'll bet he's off telling his buddies about his adventure! Blessings, Grams

  • Thanks Grams! Hopefully you're right:)))

  • I think youll find the bird youve been entertaining is in fact a spy.Once released it went into your engine and disconnected your HT leads so you couldnt give him chase and follow him back to HQ :)

  • Well darn, I should have asked him if he was a spy when I was asking him all those parole questions before turning him loose, LOL.

  • Too bad things didn't go quite as planned, but the main thing is you tried and gave it your best shot. Originally, and given Part 1, I thought maybe one of the cats got to it - but after seeing it skittle away - I'm sure it went somewhere else - and is hopefully safe somewhere.

    Well done!!

  • Thanks Dannie. I was really surprised at how fast he ran when I saw the video from my remote camera. I think the odds are at least 50/50 that he went airborne just after moving out of the frame. Otherwise surely my cats would have noticed him and pounced.

  • love the way you set the cage at an angle like the launchpad for Thunderbird 2. Too early in the morning for good bird puns and seedy comments but I won't get in a flap about it. Maybe my thought processes will take off later

  • Hopefully your Flynapses will take off later in the day:)

  • looks as though I managed to wing it anyway

  • Even if you didn't get a shot of him flying, I'm glad he got better and was able to be released. And it was funny in its own way watching you search all over to try to find him. =)

  • I nearly crawled underneath my van looking for him. I was sure he'd found some nook or cranny under there and was afraid to come out. I set up 3 cameras to capture his takeoff. Looks like I needed more, LOL.

  • You should have spraypainted him bright green so you could recognise him! ^_^

I remember saving a sparrow when I was a kid. Fortunately, that one wasn't hurt, so it flew right away, but it's a great feeling. It's a shame you didn't get to see it fly off.

  • Yeah it would be nice to be able to recognize him. Song Sparrows come to the feeder in the front yard all the time. I would imagine that bird markings might be a little like fingerprints in that no two would be *exactly* alike. It would be pretty tedious trying to identify him like that. Yep, green paint would be quicker, LOL.

  • Pooper Trader...lol well birdy bird just flew over my car and made a deposit....well it looked like him anyways...dirty little bugger ....

  • Hehehehe, yep, Birdy Bird gets around and has a lot of energy:) I doubt he'll ever be all pooped out!

  • I hope birdy bird is okay. I was hoping your other cammera caught sight of him, which it did.

  • Even if he wasn't 100% I'm sure in an emergency he could fly up to a low branch on a tree to avoid a predator.

The extra camera was a big help. I would have spent another half hour sticking my head under the van looking for movement if it hadn't been for that camera.

  • In my mind, he/she flew away and is off to start his/her new spring family! :-)

  • The optimistic point of view is always the best way to go:)))

  • He did not want to leave his new home with all the good bird seed and the cool new perch. I think he flew away he just had to get his bearings for a little bit.

You are so kind to take such good care of him. :)

  • Thanks Debbie. He certainly was enjoying the free eats:)

  • You have moved up several notches on my "most favorite people in world" list YOU ROCK!!!! (Defying the laws of physics LOL) Your questions, seedy characters, poopitrator... LOOOOL :O) Hope he's okay

  • Thanks dorotwhy! There was bird poop on my windshield this morning. I'm sure he must have been the poopitrator, LOL.

  • Drive by shooting... could have been his buddies retaliating for unjust jailbirding :O)

  • You officially get credit for all that you did for the little bird:)I doubt very many guys would have done the same...so kudo's to you:)

  • Thanks Juls!

  • I am sure that he is okay Robert. He looked healthy in the cage. Maybe he just liked his new home more than you realized. You're a sweetheart. hugs, Chris

  • Well he certainly seemed to enjoy his bottomless bucket of birdseed:) and seemed pretty healthy from day one.

    ((hugs))

  • That bird was never hurt, he just knew youd ut him on YouTube. What a poser he is! (And cute, too).

    Great comic relief, too, Blinkazoid.

Well, even if he didn't fly in the end, at least he's free and wild again. You're a good man, Blink!

  • Thanks Carl! There were several Song Sparrows at the bird feeder this morning. Hopefully he was one of them.

  • Animals and kids. They never do what you expect. That was fascinating, being able to see his different behaviors when he's alone. And it definitely looked like he was airborne by the end of the clip. Good job, young man! :-)

  • Thanks SactoGranny. He was interesting to watch. He was really skittish of me at first and hid in the back of the cage even when he just heard my footsteps, but he kept getting a little braver every day. At the end he'd come to the front and stare at me so long as I was a few feet back.

  • you have such of a good heart to take care of the birdy.

  • Thanks Diane. I always feel responsible about the critters my cats bring in.

  • You did your very best... I'm sure now he's back in his natural habitat his ability to fly have returned.. he sure seemed to exercise his wings in the cage.. :)

  • He was VERY active inside his cage. And wow he was really moving fast when he came out from under the van. I think the odds of him making it are reasonably good.

  • Yes, I would imagine so.. :)

  • You're awesome and you took great care of him. I hope he flew away eventually.

You have a great big huge heart!

  • Thanks Sheri. I'm hoping he flew off too!

  • Cool video Blinky!

  • Thanks Carol!

  • It looked like he may have taken off there at the very end - yeah, it's hard to tell.

You took such good care of him, I am sure he's flying around out there.

  • I prefer to think he's flying around somehwere too:))) When he very first started hopping around I could have caught him but I kept waiting on him to fly.

  • It was fun to see how well you cared for it. And really, I'm glad the cats didn't get him this time. Maybe it just took a little time to adjust to being outside the enclosed area that it knew was safe. Cool stuff.

  • I actually wound up being glad the cats were there this time to help me find him. They didn't find him so I'm hoping he flew. I'm sue Babs saw him when he went under the van but Babs is one of those rare cats that didn't get the hunting gene.

  • Man you are a hard jailer he he he he

  • Heheheh, I'd give any human I incarcerated the Tom T. Hall treatment of hot baloney, eggs and gravy:)

  • This is not a guess. I saw that bird airborne at the end of the frame. It didn't just speed up it's wings were flapping and it was off the ground. You will see him at you feeder.

  • I replayed it several times. It did kinda look like he was a little off the ground at the very end. I wish my camera had been turned just a bit more. I really think that if he hadn't taken off, the cats would have been after him. They were totally oblivious to him.

  • Dang...that was nice of you!! I hope Birdy Bird makes it!

  • Hopefully he will keep on truckin!

  • ehehehe Atleast ya tried!

  • Thanks highheadjester. That I did!
