I've riden in an electric car once, and it is extremely comfortable. When it drives, it's an extremely stiff ride just like a diesel car and I really like that.
Responding to saxmanchiro et al- Mature people don't buy cars based on how"cool"they think they will look to other people. As transportation electric car technology is just developing. Gas burning is cheap, versitile. The government is giving rebates, still the value/price doesn't favor electric carsThat is why GM developed the Volt system but then we're talking about $40,000.
This only makes sense as a local commute system, with gas car for long distance, blackouts, battery down time transport, etc.
yes, "this is our future" I used to work for the US Dept of Energy (1991) where government policy focused on advanced batteries to drive demand for EVs. A lead acid battery pack gave about 40 miles for range... Amory Lovins promoted hybrid cars in a 1992 article, and the major car makers stopped looking at the pure electric. Thank you, Mitsubishi... I recommend Bob Batson for an engineer with 25 years of experience with EVs. EVAmerica SPOT Com is a good source of information
The problem a lot of people don't realize is if you are caught in a snowstorm on the highway you will be running your heater to keep warm... batteries also don't do well in cold. Put several hundred people trapped for 8 hours with batteries going dead and you may want to reconsider if you live in a cold climate.
I'm an electric car owner. Manufacturers are trying to make EVs sound more interesting than they actually are. EVs aren't versatile like a gasoline car. However, if you have a long daily commute to work then an EV can save you some money. EVs are only 2-4 cents per mile vs. 8-25 cents per mile with gasoline. You just have to keep it plugged in when you aren't using it. They need to get the price below $20K.
"Full gauge is senseless" Oh really? Yeah I dont need to know when I am out of a charge or anything..... I would rather not stare at my odometer all day while doing math trying to figure out if I can make it home or not. You need to know how much charge you have idiot.
Problem with the eletric cars like Leaf and this one is that they didn't spend any money for the interior to keep it within budget price. It is still hard to justify spending $25-30K for a electric car and get such cheap feeling interiors.
People need to see the big global picture here. If we don't all do our part to lower carbon emissions, then we are part of the problem. If you deny facts, like AGW, and are still stuck in the dark ages with driving a 2 ton behemoth with a 6.7 liter gas guzzling V8, by yourself, and think you are cool, I have some bad news for you. You are a dinosaur and soon to be considered very uncool. If we all demand affordable electric cars, they will build them.
When the ranges start going up and the cost of these cars come down - then they will be worth buying. The Tesla roadster is the only one with a worthwhile range at the moment (311 miles). But it's just far too expensive, when you can get the Lotus petrol equiv for a third of the price. In time, as technology advances - I predict we will get 500+ mile range cars for less than 20,000 in the next 10 years.
@vexec15 Not if the majority of us are driving the same. When the Avalanche, Yukon, F-350, etc drivers convert or dump the carbon spewers and jump into cars like this, we are much safer on the roads.
Finally, one decent review from him. Actual driving, actual facts, minus some guesses, actual opinions and not just what BMW tells him to say. Mad props for reviewing an electric vehicle and for listening to 98.7 FM, but you're still not cool with those shades.
I really do not see why people are getting so excited with this little ca. It's a nice car but it's far too pricey for what it is, mainly because Mitsubishi buy batteries fom duracel or some other expesive shit. While Nissan invested and spent years on ther battery which now cost less and has more range.
@94cvalle if they dont blow us up first, hydrogen is not big because of safety concerns which are bigger than electric cars , give it 10 years and both will be big
@arashn89 yes i understand its not ready there are a lot of safety concerns, but i do feel that pure electric cars are going to work as a transition tool between -gas and the Fuel cell electric vehicle (Hidrogen).
@arashn89 Hydrogen isn't big because there is ecological method to extract pure hydrogen from any known source using any known method. As far as safety, it's prob just one step less safe than petrol vehicles, as... their drive train is powered by explosions as well! Same shit.
@94cvalle There's no infastructure, the tanks are too big, it's less efficient than EV'S, for some corrupted reason Shell sells hydrogen (the Universe's most abundant element) at the same price as petrol and there's over 4000psi in the back. That's a hydrogen bomb! That's not a car I'll feel comftorable with while it sits parked in Northen Ireland, in Omagh or West Belfast on a road where the Orange Parade will pass by. Hydrogen is not the future for cars but it's best for trains, ships, ect.
I think you should research this car a little more because it sounds like you don't know much about it. First off the US spec version will be the same size interior just longer because of US crash test reg for crumple zones. Also this is built on an old Mitsu platform called the "i" therefore i-MIEV. This car is the bottom of the barrel in Japan, AKA Kei car. These use 660cc engines and fall under low road tax brackets. This is a 12K dollar car with an electric motor. It will fail.
When U.S. starts paying $5/gal. ... those with electric cars are going to be smiling.
