It wasn`t the crack, it had nothing to do with his soundness or the jockey. I would bet that Big Brown was overdosed. A lot of fans don`t think of that cus they are fans and they don`t get a look at the inside of the game. I`ve been inside the game and the reality is not what the fan thinks. The reality is that Big Brown was overdosed, and I don`t think that i read a comment where someone said that. That goes to show how much the fan does not actually know about racing.
Though people may look at this race as a fluke for Da 'Tara, I gotta say, his moment in the sun was quite impressive, setting a 23 4/5 opening quarter isn't exactly plodding for the Belmont, 48 half is honest, and he was still able to open up and pull away to win by open lengths. May have been the one day he put in a great run, but it was a great run no doubt this was a one-horse race the whole way around. Unfortunately its overshadowed by Big Brown's crash, and Tara's own post-Belmont record.
Big Brownstain would not have won had Kent not pulled him. The plain TRUTH is BB was done by the time they were halfway around turn 2, long before Kent actually eased him. Every single horse in the field was running faster than him at that point. For you morons who are bitter because you loaded up on BB to Show so you could win $2.10 on a $2.00 bet, well the word DUMB is clearly insufficient to describe your stupidity. Blame that on bad genes you got from your idiot parents, not Kent D. LOL
Big Brown was scam just like his druglord trainer Rick Drugtow. BB was a horse loaded with huge amounts of steroids and other illegal medications. The NYRA threatened Drugtow with testing BB for steroids after the Belmont and Drugtow admitted he had been on steroids, but taken off them after the Preakness. The International Racing Com has now asked that Drugtow be permenently suspended by the NYRA. Drugtow has been found guilty of 64 different med violations at 15 different tracks. LOL
@bluetiege Actually the steroids were legal. It just used to be that guys like Dutrow knew better than to piss off the establisshment by winning races like this. Oscar had it good until Shifty Sheik came within a neck of Slew o Gold in the 1984 Marlboro, and then there was hell to pay.
Ole Big Brown, he showed an incredible turn of foot in the Preakness, one of the best I have ever seen. My one concern and only concern was that he would be too sharp for the Belmont and not relax. Sadly, that's what happened. I actually think he is under-rated today because of this one let down.
the mafia told kent desermoux what was up there was way too much money to be made if he didn't win. im tellin you all that was about the cash, they're still retiring bb if he wins or loses and they're still get 100k a pop for breeding fees everytime he knocks up a fillie. the mob or some people that run shit in new york told him not to win
@ImmortalSynn I dont have actuall evidence, I'm just speculating , that horse was way better than he ran, and everything paid so huge with him running all the way out of it, and it doesn't look to me like he even try's it looks like he's holdin him back and he kinda fakes it around the far turn like he's bout to get into the horse and hit him with the whip and shake him up. instead he hits him once and just pulls him up, it's just crap i think someone told him not to run
...so even though it's on camera with his shoe coming partially off, meaning nails jutting into his hoof at awkward angles-- that was all part of "the setup" too in your mind, right? LOL
@emme131 -- What I saw was a horse 4 or 5 paths out, spinning his wheels. First mistake, after the break, was KD yanking his head to the right half a dozen times to get him off the rail and in stalking position outside...Plus, he was rank early on. That took a lot of the punch out of him. 2nd Mistake, ---he's not Secretariat. KD should have left him on the rail instead of expending so much effort to get to the outside---it cooked him. This horse was well spent after three-quarters
Not that it means I necessarily disagree... it could be a somewhat plausible situation-- but in the lack of any evidence whatsoever, the best it could be called is a conspiracy theory.
excuse me everybody, but it just wasn't Big Brown's day. he had a cracked hoof that probably wasnt at its best. stop blaiming kent for big browns loss. he is one of the greatest race horses in my opinion, and sometimes they can't win them all.
it really was a bad ride by kent, he bounced big brown all over the place into the first turn. not only that, big brown ran 5-7 wide the entire way. just a horrible trip and a bad ride by kent. i really like kent though, one of the favorite jockeys but this really was a pathetic ride by him.
No, it wasn't Kent, it is extremely difficult to control a 1100 pound animal going some 35-40 MPH. Big Brown wasn't wide going into the turn, once Kent angled him out like he normally likes to go, he was sitting pretty comfortable and he was just 3 wide coming off the clubhouse turn, and up the backside he was a little out into the track, but a lot of jockeys let them drift a little bit so they can settle. BB was never more than 3 wide in this race. Other than being eased to the wire.
i really like a kent, one of my favorite jockeys but it really was a horrible ride by him. watch the head on view of the race, he bounced big brown all over the place. horrible horrible trip for big brown, he ran at leasr 6-7 wide the entire way.
I love the jockey. He didn't care about winning or anything, he wanted to protect that horse when he realized something was wrong. I applaud him for that. People had said that Big Brown loves Kent and Kent loves him.
quarter crack, missed training, lose shoe that for all we know could've been painful for brown's tender feet, bad break, bad early trip, 7 wide the entire first turn, 7-8 wide the entire 2nd turn, florida derby, kentucky derby, preakness performances takes toll on a horse lightly raced, lightly conditioned = demise of big brown. not even secretariat would've won with the shoe, quarter crack, missed training, almost no conditioning work, etc etc. big brown basically ran on natural talent alone
thx for the support on big brown....as 4 u bigbrown 2322. not the jockeys fault. he did the right thing. he didnt try n kill the horse just for a win. he cared about the horses life.
you would wonder why people love to see big brown fail he is a horse not a human he has not got an ego or he doesnt go around talking himself up he just goes out and tries his best he does not know that he was in a race for the triple crown! brianshaw 23 you have to remember there is horses who run 15 times a year its nothing to do with fitness that he didnt win it was a mile and a half he does more than that 3 times a week at home he lost a shoe that upset his rythem and balance
the reason big brown lost is this: he peaked too early, in the kentucky derby and preakness stakes. he needed a lot more time than 3 weeks to get back to top form. the other reason he lost was because he didnt run in enough races prior to the belmont. once as a 2 year old, 4 times as a 3 year old, thats only 5 races. big brown simply wasnt conditioned enough to win 3 races in 5 weeks. if he hadnt been injured as a two year old and raced quite a few more times he wouldve won.
Big Brown, Barbaro and every other superhorse to be but never was will always be chasing the "ONE" and the "one and only" Secretariat. When I heard them calling Big Brown the second coming of the "ONE" I blew chunks.
You are right something was wrong with BB. He missed his steroid shot remember. Fuqn pretenders built up by the media....
I saw on a web site that big brown might have gotten stpped on by the other horse making his shoe come really lose. I don't know if it is true though. . .
every time i watch this race i wonder HOW THE FUCK did big brown lose? the pace was freakin slow... it makes absolutely no sense... very bad ride from the beginning, BB slipped into macho again then tried to run over da tara then he banged into another house on the turn in order to get a good position... these are horses not race cars... sigh..
yeah i know about his shoe but i think big brown lost the race from the start. everything went wrong for big brown from the preakness. the crack in his hoof screwed up his training routine, he didnt come into the belmont at full power and had a horrendous start. big brown's stride got busted too many times in this race by crashing into other horses...
Watch BB closely from 00:19 to about 00:26 when he goes into the clubhouse turn. Something is wrong. You can watch him struggle so much more than all the other horses, something was definitely wrong from the beginning, and I still haven't figured out what.
In recent races at Saratoga, other horses were winning faster then 1:10.96. One did six furlongs in 1:10.23 - so BB isn't exceptional..and the connecitons still have attitude problems. Pinch him out at the Haskell, jockeys!!
To all of the "sheep" out there, who dropped BB like a hot rock after the Belmont. First of all this horse is way too talented for that day to be anything but a fluke. His latest workouts are getting faster and faster,he worked 6F at Belmont on 7-26-08 in 1:10 4/5,his previous work he went the 5F in 59 1/5. What this means is he is back in form and in the Haskell you are going to see the BB who wasn't at the Belmont. So stop your bawling "sheep" and get back on thewagon before it is to late.
the poor horse's shoe was loose u ppl. i agree with centreman41. besides, they are constantly running the horses over and over again, on race directly after another, and they never get a real break...
I am not going to knock anyone who commented because at the time they didn't know what happened to Brown's shoe. It came loose, and was going in and out of the foot, with the nails poking his hoof every step. Desormeaux knows what he is doing. The guy is a Hall of Famer.
I can't wait for a Big Brown v Curlin matchup in the Breeders Cup Classic.
Desormaux put the gas pedal to the floor and the tank was empty. Bottom line. I have to say, as much as I have wanted to see a triple crown winner over the years, I really did not want this horse to win at all. I couldn't stand Dutrow for the life of me and I thought he was a total prick. He did nothing but talk shit for three weeks leading up to this race. I thought it was pretty funny how he didn't have the balls to address the media after his horse choked. Karma as far as I'm concerned.
Now that the other jockeys know how to beat BB, they can do it again. Boxing in, getting dirt on him, that's what they know will work now. Don't give him a clean trip. That's what it's all about. For anyone, I mean - don't hand it to anyone. I like Da'Tara - I really do. He overcame. He deserved it.
guys you cant blame desormauux. he did the right thing. to prevent any injury just in case big brown was hurt. jokeys make split second decisions, and thankfully he did the right thing. i believe the shoe is what caused big brown to be uncomfortable in the race. and the shoe reeset itself as soon as he got off the dirt onto oavement, so it was reset before he got back to the barn.
we can all agree that something did go wrong. because big brown was out of all these horses leagues if you watched the previous races. either the "mafia" and the shoe was an excuse or the loose shoe really did happen. we all know that big brown is still the best horse in present time.
For the love of Pete, I read all about the shoe. First of all, Brown's shoe's are glued. No nails. Second, he would have been walking funny after the race. And the shoe would have been noticed upon examination after the race. And why would it take two weeks and an e-mailed photo to the owner from a free-lance artist to find this out? No. Absolutely not the shoe. But excuses are like butt holes - jockey's, owners, and trainers all have one.
hmmm, big brown throws a shoe ,nobody checks to see that after the race .Are you telling me this horse who dutrow said will be gone over with a fine tooth comb, noooooooo one noticed this shoe after the race... nice try doc wynstrol go back ta rehab ya jackasss....
Folks, there is a picture out today that CLEARLY shows that Big Brown's right hind shoe was hanging halfway off and let me tell you from my experiance of over 12 years of working with thoroughbreds, that did him in right there. He was slipping. It happened during the first 200 yards of the race and that's the reason he was repeatedly switching his leads around the clubhouse turn and why he was so rank. That hoof kept sliding out a little and it upset BB so he just quite running. They'll do that.
6/23 A photo taken during the early stages of the Belmont Stakes has revealed Big Brown was running with a loose shoe!! "The picture shocked me," Iavarone said. - Could explain alot, don't ya think? Anyway, Curlin is the greatest!
Just look at the fractions Big Brown was in the first two legs which were fast, this horse at this distance (mile and half) should have had the lead although it was claimed that he was a step slow. No excuse Kent he could have rushed him up the rail for positioning like Ron Turcotte in the Belmont Stakes(1973) and he was a couple steps slow. Conclusion: Can't hold a speed horse at this distance pace is too slow ends up quitting like many other horses we've seen.
He was extremely rank the first 3/8 or so,if you let him go,you may not be able to get him to come back to you,not to mention we are talking about a 1 1/2 mile race. You will waste valuable energy, that you must have when approaching the 1/4 pole, meaning a jock must use his head and be patient(which Kent did perfectly). You call him a speed horse, well sure he has speed, but your inferring that he has to have the lead, that is not correct. He has been just off the lead before,CONT:
We need a modern day triple crown winner. Since it's too "hard" being Secretariat, make the Belmont a mile and 1/8 so today's sissy horses can take it. Make it easier to win, it's the modern American way.
Horses who have to run the longest race in their lives,on a track that is known to be excessively deep, doing so on a patched hoof, with an abscess that did not respond to the original medication treatment, that missed exersize days, that missed workouts.....always deserve to be bet down to 1-4!!!!!
People who bet with their hearts deserve to loss their money to people who bet with their brains! Thanks folks, I appreciate it!!
The first thing that you have to fathom is that how can everyone be so shocked that a horse with a 1/4 crack, an abscess that is not responding to treatment, who missed needed workouts and who missed exersize, ran a dull race! As for Da Tara at 38:1, in is called an overlay...the bettors blew it..he was simply the only speed horse in the race, who was given an easy lead and allowed to run at his own (slow) pace. Remove BB from the race and then go back and handicap it again.....
Start by trying to fathom how anyone could think a horse who had a 1/4 crack, an abscess that was not responding to treatment, who missed workouts, who missed exersize sessions, would still dominate a race at 1 1/2 miles! That is what I can't fathom???? Da Tara was the only speed horse in the race and was allowed to set his own slow pace! When people bet with their hearts instead of their brains...38-1 shots win!!When people bet with their brains they cash huge tickets on 38-1 shots! Thanks!
NASTYLEFTHOOK i agree 100000% with you something was not right here this horse dominated the other 2 races with better horses then datara he lost to bigbrown by 20 lenths this race was fixed the odds of bigbrown coming in last place was 100/1 you do the math every one dollar you put up you get back a hundred dollars let me guess who placed that bet hmmmmmmm!!! bodog had all the funny bets going will kent wip the horse around the turn? and bets like that this race was FIXED POINT BLANK PERIOD
I personally believe it was the steroids. They put him on them for the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and then take him off of them all of a sudden. You can't expect a horse to react good to that. His body didn't have enough time to adjust to the change. Or as nastylefthook1 said he could have lost interest and quit. If that horse did not want to run and win he wouldn't have. He didn't respond to Kent whatsoever in the last part of the race. Not Brown's fault though.
You don't understand how steriods work....they allow muscles to recouperate faster, allowing a horse(or human) to workout more often, thereby building more muscle mass. BB was fighting a 1/4 crack and missed much of his workouts, so the Steriods did not play a part. a Steriod shot does not make any positive difference if you can not work out.
Trainer was very arrogant before the race promosing a BB win to one and all. BB must go to Dubai to see if he can do the same thing that Curlin did. Bennie The Bull also has the talent to run in the world cup so lets see how the owner of BB and Bennie the bull plays this one out.
this is ridiculous the jokey should of just let him go, you could tell he wanted to! but since the jockey jjust gave up pretty much, BIg Brown decided to too. It makes me so mad!
i get tired of hearing announcer say,,desormeaux waits,,desormeaux waits ,desormeaux waits,,give me a break,,if secratariat waited he wouldnt have won,,secratariat won by over 30 lengths because he didnt wait,,,,desormeaux didnt let big brown run when he wanted to,,horse got disinterested and quit,,
Lot of good points here...No arguments please...Pace was slow, 1:12 for 6, Big Red turned 1:09 and won by how many?
My opinion, he just got beat, flat out...Should have been ON the lead with those fractions...Or maybe, with the breeding of today, the triple crown schedule is too much for horses of this age?
All conjecture, Kent was right to pull him up...No chance to win, why punish him?
Kent is pathetic. In a local newspaper he's blaming the man who opened the starter gates, saying the guy 'distracetd' Brown. Now, if the ambulances that follow the field and other people never bothered the horse before...
Winstrol is legal in NY, unfortunately. And hopefully after the congressional hearing, it will be banned for good! It's a form of cheating regardless.
In the NY Daily News, Kent is blaming the man who stands by the gate. Saying that BB was 'distracted'. BB hasn't been 'distracted' from people and even ambulances that follow the field before. Kent is a pathetic creature. So is Dutrow. And the other post is right - BB broke out of the 1 post in his maiden and that didn't bother him. Gee..can they say 'escuses'?
" Medication " was not allowed to be used on Big Brown in the state of New York that was allowed in the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness...draw your own conclusions...
Kent had a brain fart! He had already let that horse run lenghts more than necessary by taking him way wide in both the Derby and the Preakness. He did it again(completely un-necessary) and found that BB did not have an engine. Jerry Baily was not critical of the ride. But in a million years JD would not ride a race like that!
Absolutely true although he had no option in the Derby. Kent only had the brain fart because of Eibar Coa who wanted to have a piece of BB. First Tale of Ekati makes sure BB stays on the rail behind Dtara Second when BB settles in third outside of him Tale of Ekati gradually moves them 6 to 7 wide.
Personally I am glad Eibar did this because BB really hadn't been tested up to this point.
How can Bailey be critical he cost Smarty Jones the Triple Crown. Eddington worst Belmont ride ever.
Jerry Bailey cant be critical of Kent when he(Jerry Bailey) had the worst ride in the Belmont ever. Remember how he rode Eddington was JB trying to win the race or did he go after Smarty Jones? How bad was it? He never rode Eddington again even when they need a late replacement Jockey for him Bailey was available sitting in Jocks room and he never got the call.
Surely this horse coulda, shoulda, woulda took the lead on the rail, the other jocks, I dont think they would have tried to box Big Brown in as they would get blamed for the loss. If I was Kent, I would think that and let them be the cause before I did the maneuvers he pulled.
After the tragedy of Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby this sport needed a TC winner more than anything. No one paid attention to the trainer of Da Tara who not only said his horse was getting better but trainer had also beaten a TC hopeful before. Its a shame alot of people seem to know nothing except the great Secreriart. Only 11 horses have won the TC. Can you name them without looking it up?
As for Peta. Go look up Ferdinand on this site and see what was done to this KD winner.
Honestly they should've just let him have his head and take off. The time was so slow he could've lead the pace the entire way. Not to compare him to Secretariat, but whenever a horse in front of Big Red set a slow pace, he lost.
Also they took him of the steroids, which is not at all a good thing to do during mid-season, especially during the Triple Crown. I don't care if that horse was increased in condition because of the steroids, Dutrow's vet should not of let it happen.
Big Brown lost because he wanted to run and his jockey stopped him every step of the way. Watch the horse's head. It was a fight between man and horse.
OMG, SHUT UP pple who hate BB, ALL great racehorses have LOST a race, SECRETARIAT, seabiscuit, Lava Man, Alysheba, Smarty Jones, BARBARO,and now BB. BB is rite up there wit the great ones! So to pple who hate BB, just bc, he lost ONE race, yall need to shut the **** up!!
THE TRIPLE CROWN THE TRIPLE CROWN>>HE LOST IN THE TRIPLE CROWN. BB is the equine equivalent of the NE patriots. NE patriots 18-1.....BB 2-1...in other words they are chokers.
horseluver222 Most of these bimbos don't know the first thing about a race horse. Your right. They don't know how to shut up. Kent did the right thing. He had NO HORSE!!!!! Hats off to KD!
Kent Desormeaux does not need money. He is one of the top jockeys in the nation! Money had nothing to do with this. The horse is what mattered in this race.
4 Factors that BIG BROWN LOST, 1. No steroids,2. he hate NY, 3. too hot 4. Dutrow is 100% sure his horse is gonna win, come'on, BIG BROWN race wide all the way at the DERBY.
ILUVVEZ Big brown lost because the race was fixed. if you placed a 1,000 bet on the horse that won. You would be the recipient of $780,000. The truth is the race paid more to private betters for Big Brown to lose.
Something sure does smell, thats for sure! BB beat da tara in the florida derby by more than 15 lengths less than 80days ago. Won all his races by 5.5-13 lengths. To fall off that hard... weeeeee don't u just love betting againts the "pro's" hahahahahahaha
was that your class A jockey? big brown might have really lost to a better colt but the way the jock raced him wide throughout the race was plain stupidity! DA TARA was traversing a much shorter route so how could big brown possibly catch him?
Also, if everyone wants to see true POWER and capability in a horse... I suggest you check out the video "Loro Piana Tomboy: World's Most Powerful Jumper" (attached here to this vid).
Also, the video of Easy Boy at the du Maurier is a good watch as well-- incredible ability in that jumper!
...I'm guessing/hoping you meant that sarcastically, considering that the dude mangled half the horses' names and spent more time talking about the loser than the winner.
I was extremely disappointed, but I personally think it had a lot to do with heat and the track (too deep). Desormeaux has ridden enough champions to know when something isn't right, so he eased Big Brown up to avoid any possibility of injury. No one wanted to see a repeat of Eight Belles. Big Brown is still a great racehorse in my eyes, and uninjured and alive - and that's the most important thing.
I swear it looked to me like Big Brown's nose hit Da Tara's rump when Brown was trying to break to the outside, and he even started shaking his head, which he was still doing at the end of the race. My husband thinks I'm nuts, well maybe, but I still think this happened and it stunned him.
Besides any injury or whatever, that was one of the worst rides i've ever seen in a feature race, down here in Australia the jockey would have been lucky to leave the course in one piece!why in hell did he havethe horse so bloody wide?
Why isn't anyone giving Da'Tara respect? The colt ran a hell of a race! Made 12 furlongs look like a long sprint to the finish. Zito is the best, most prepared trainer going today! And he's a humble guy, who can't like that about someone.
His hoof was fine. Quarter cracks are easily fixed. They said they took him off the steroids that month even though they were legal steroids because they wanted to prove he was still a great horse. Haha suckers. =) I'm glad Da' Tara won.
Big Brown really hates the inside...everyone else played him perfectly. The heat could have bothered him...had he ever raced in that sort of heat? So the heat could have really messsed some other horses up...Denis of Cork. It was too hot to ask this horse for a burst of speed at the end of the race...this is why da Tara won. Sorry everyone, i just dont think bg brown is as great a horse as people say. If he was put in the 10th post position, he woud have done better.
PETA needs to keep their noses out of everybody's business. they get pissed off way too easy over the dumbest crap. It is fun to get in front of a PETA rally and eat a piece of fried chicken in front of them and say that it is sooo good. they get so pissed off and they cant do anything or you can sue the shit out of them
The jockey is a good guy...he put the horse's health first...more than I can say for the trainer...and it's not Big Brown's fault...he didn't give himself steroids...but if he goes on to stud, he'll be passing those weak front feet along to another generation...
I still LOVE Big Brown, to all of those who think BB is a looser bc he lost this race, i have 1 thing to tell yall, EVERY great American race horse HAS LOST A Race!!! Secretariat, Seabiscuit, War Admiral, Barbaro and now BB, BB is rite at the top with those great racehorses, so BB is STILL A CHAMP!!
His jockey wouldn't let him run? My lord, that horse was rank in that 1st 1/2 mile.I got news for you,you let him run then, and you can kiss goodbye of any chance to win. Kent was spooked by his ride on Real Quiet? Please, he settled him down(as best he could) and had him in a good position to win. When he asked the question,he had no horse. More than likely, the horse just didn't handle the track. No one's fault, but everyone just wants someone to blame.
The jock held him back when he wanted to run? People he was rank from the start to almost the entrance to the backside. You let him then, and guess what you will have NO CHANCE TO WIN AT ALL!What was Kent doing at the start of the race? My god the horse was rank,it was nothing that the jock was doing. He was spooked by his ride on Real Quiet? He didn't hold him too long, you can't just let your horse take off in the 1st 1/2 mile,I got news for you,he would have no shot to win(only 1 could,Big Red).
Big Brown definitely needed more time to heal. He needed more water since lasiks, the drugs that Big Brown was on, dehydrates the horses. Dutrow is in it for the money, he doesn't know how to train, he comes from a background of sniffing cocaine. Before Big Brown nobody knew who he was. I'm looking forward to a rematch between D'Tara and Big Brown in August at the Travers.
i worked for pletcher for 2 years and i know the tracks. belmont and nyra are swindlers. today on yahoo news they reported big brown has no injuries, why? nyra paid dutrow off to blow the race and nyra profits. look at how much money nyra won because of his loss. anyone who works in the races knew this was happening. nyra SUCKS.
i worked for pletcher for 2 years and i know the tracks. belmont and nyra are a bunch of swindlers. they didn't find anything wrong with big brown, why? becuase nyra paid dutrow off to blow the race and nyra profits big time. just look up how much money nyra made becuase of big browns loss. every person that works at the race track told me they knew big brown wasn't going to win. my brother in law is forman for weaver and he won the exacta da'tara and denis of cork. just remember nyra SUCKS.
Big Brown is a beautiful horse but they really shouldn't have raced him because of the quarter cracks. Yes, they said it was "nothing to worry about" and may not have been but the uneven pressure probably effected his run. I think he missed his May 15th steriod injection(correct me if I'm wrong)?
The trainer honestly needs to pay more attention to his daughter instead of the horses.. sad sad sad.
Yeah drugs has nothing to do with his failure. After the failed appeal Dotrow will be banned for 10 years! HAAA good!

ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
Ole Big Brown, he showed an incredible turn of foot in the Preakness, one of the best I have ever seen. My one concern and only concern was that he would be too sharp for the Belmont and not relax. Sadly, that's what happened. I actually think he is under-rated today because of this one let down.
bg147 1 year ago
@bg147
Sure... but it is, of course, the biggest letdown a racehorse can have.
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
I think this was the biggest let down in Thoroughbred racing history. Big Brown will always be one of my favorites of all time.

the mafia told kent desermoux what was up there was way too much money to be made if he didn't win. im tellin you all that was about the cash, they're still retiring bb if he wins or loses and they're still get 100k a pop for breeding fees everytime he knocks up a fillie. the mob or some people that run shit in new york told him not to win
emme131 1 year ago
@emme131
...and your evidence for that accusation is ____?
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
@ImmortalSynn I dont have actuall evidence, I'm just speculating , that horse was way better than he ran, and everything paid so huge with him running all the way out of it, and it doesn't look to me like he even try's it looks like he's holdin him back and he kinda fakes it around the far turn like he's bout to get into the horse and hit him with the whip and shake him up. instead he hits him once and just pulls him up, it's just crap i think someone told him not to run
emme131 1 year ago
@emme131
...so even though it's on camera with his shoe coming partially off, meaning nails jutting into his hoof at awkward angles-- that was all part of "the setup" too in your mind, right? LOL
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
@emme131 -- What I saw was a horse 4 or 5 paths out, spinning his wheels. First mistake, after the break, was KD yanking his head to the right half a dozen times to get him off the rail and in stalking position outside...Plus, he was rank early on. That took a lot of the punch out of him. 2nd Mistake, ---he's not Secretariat. KD should have left him on the rail instead of expending so much effort to get to the outside---it cooked him. This horse was well spent after three-quarters
TwoSlew 1 year ago
@ImmortalSynn do you agree?
emme131 1 year ago
@emme131
Nope.
Not that it means I necessarily disagree... it could be a somewhat plausible situation-- but in the lack of any evidence whatsoever, the best it could be called is a conspiracy theory.
ImmortalSynn 1 year ago
excuse me everybody, but it just wasn't Big Brown's day. he had a cracked hoof that probably wasnt at its best. stop blaiming kent for big browns loss. he is one of the greatest race horses in my opinion, and sometimes they can't win them all.
Soccerfever2014 2 years ago 2
it really was a bad ride by kent, he bounced big brown all over the place into the first turn. not only that, big brown ran 5-7 wide the entire way. just a horrible trip and a bad ride by kent. i really like kent though, one of the favorite jockeys but this really was a pathetic ride by him.
AI4MVP05 2 years ago
No, it wasn't Kent, it is extremely difficult to control a 1100 pound animal going some 35-40 MPH. Big Brown wasn't wide going into the turn, once Kent angled him out like he normally likes to go, he was sitting pretty comfortable and he was just 3 wide coming off the clubhouse turn, and up the backside he was a little out into the track, but a lot of jockeys let them drift a little bit so they can settle. BB was never more than 3 wide in this race. Other than being eased to the wire.
BigBrown2332 2 years ago 2
i really like a kent, one of my favorite jockeys but it really was a horrible ride by him. watch the head on view of the race, he bounced big brown all over the place. horrible horrible trip for big brown, he ran at leasr 6-7 wide the entire way.
AI4MVP05 2 years ago
I love the jockey. He didn't care about winning or anything, he wanted to protect that horse when he realized something was wrong. I applaud him for that. People had said that Big Brown loves Kent and Kent loves him.
twilightrocks122 2 years ago
quarter crack, missed training, lose shoe that for all we know could've been painful for brown's tender feet, bad break, bad early trip, 7 wide the entire first turn, 7-8 wide the entire 2nd turn, florida derby, kentucky derby, preakness performances takes toll on a horse lightly raced, lightly conditioned = demise of big brown. not even secretariat would've won with the shoe, quarter crack, missed training, almost no conditioning work, etc etc. big brown basically ran on natural talent alone
BrianShaw23 2 years ago
jmk1er, Don't blame it on the horse. He can't choose his trainer, owner etc...

Two words why Big Brown didn't win: Horse Racing, or of course, Shit Happens. That's 4words. They're animals. (6 words now). I can go on.
steel966 3 years ago
the reason big brown lost is this: he peaked too early, in the kentucky derby and preakness stakes. he needed a lot more time than 3 weeks to get back to top form. the other reason he lost was because he didnt run in enough races prior to the belmont. once as a 2 year old, 4 times as a 3 year old, thats only 5 races. big brown simply wasnt conditioned enough to win 3 races in 5 weeks. if he hadnt been injured as a two year old and raced quite a few more times he wouldve won.

BrianShaw23 3 years ago 3
every time i watch this race i wonder HOW THE FUCK did big brown lose? the pace was freakin slow... it makes absolutely no sense... very bad ride from the beginning, BB slipped into macho again then tried to run over da tara then he banged into another house on the turn in order to get a good position... these are horses not race cars... sigh..
BrianShaw23 3 years ago 3
...you ~are~ area of his shoe situation, right?
ImmortalSynn 3 years ago
yeah i know about his shoe but i think big brown lost the race from the start. everything went wrong for big brown from the preakness. the crack in his hoof screwed up his training routine, he didnt come into the belmont at full power and had a horrendous start. big brown's stride got busted too many times in this race by crashing into other horses...
BrianShaw23 3 years ago
Watch BB closely from 00:19 to about 00:26 when he goes into the clubhouse turn. Something is wrong. You can watch him struggle so much more than all the other horses, something was definitely wrong from the beginning, and I still haven't figured out what.

In recent races at Saratoga, other horses were winning faster then 1:10.96. One did six furlongs in 1:10.23 - so BB isn't exceptional..and the connecitons still have attitude problems. Pinch him out at the Haskell, jockeys!!
namesdntexist 3 years ago
To all of the "sheep" out there, who dropped BB like a hot rock after the Belmont. First of all this horse is way too talented for that day to be anything but a fluke. His latest workouts are getting faster and faster,he worked 6F at Belmont on 7-26-08 in 1:10 4/5,his previous work he went the 5F in 59 1/5. What this means is he is back in form and in the Haskell you are going to see the BB who wasn't at the Belmont. So stop your bawling "sheep" and get back on thewagon before it is to late.

Beautiful0789 3 years ago
I am not going to knock anyone who commented because at the time they didn't know what happened to Brown's shoe. It came loose, and was going in and out of the foot, with the nails poking his hoof every step. Desormeaux knows what he is doing. The guy is a Hall of Famer.
I can't wait for a Big Brown v Curlin matchup in the Breeders Cup Classic.
centreman41 3 years ago
Desormaux put the gas pedal to the floor and the tank was empty. Bottom line. I have to say, as much as I have wanted to see a triple crown winner over the years, I really did not want this horse to win at all. I couldn't stand Dutrow for the life of me and I thought he was a total prick. He did nothing but talk shit for three weeks leading up to this race. I thought it was pretty funny how he didn't have the balls to address the media after his horse choked. Karma as far as I'm concerned.
thunderstruck665 3 years ago
Now that the other jockeys know how to beat BB, they can do it again. Boxing in, getting dirt on him, that's what they know will work now. Don't give him a clean trip. That's what it's all about. For anyone, I mean - don't hand it to anyone. I like Da'Tara - I really do. He overcame. He deserved it.

guys you cant blame desormauux. he did the right thing. to prevent any injury just in case big brown was hurt. jokeys make split second decisions, and thankfully he did the right thing. i believe the shoe is what caused big brown to be uncomfortable in the race. and the shoe reeset itself as soon as he got off the dirt onto oavement, so it was reset before he got back to the barn.
jediknightjohnny123 3 years ago
we can all agree that something did go wrong. because big brown was out of all these horses leagues if you watched the previous races. either the "mafia" and the shoe was an excuse or the loose shoe really did happen. we all know that big brown is still the best horse in present time.
soccerfreak105 3 years ago
Curlin is THE BEST right now....
JimSpoor 3 years ago
For the love of Pete, I read all about the shoe. First of all, Brown's shoe's are glued. No nails. Second, he would have been walking funny after the race. And the shoe would have been noticed upon examination after the race. And why would it take two weeks and an e-mailed photo to the owner from a free-lance artist to find this out? No. Absolutely not the shoe. But excuses are like butt holes - jockey's, owners, and trainers all have one.

BIGRED224FOREVER 3 years ago
Folks, there is a picture out today that CLEARLY shows that Big Brown's right hind shoe was hanging halfway off and let me tell you from my experiance of over 12 years of working with thoroughbreds, that did him in right there. He was slipping. It happened during the first 200 yards of the race and that's the reason he was repeatedly switching his leads around the clubhouse turn and why he was so rank. That hoof kept sliding out a little and it upset BB so he just quite running. They'll do that.
GloomyGrayDonkey 3 years ago 2
The picture was probably photoshopped... A post-race inspection would have EASILY revealed a problem of that magnitude.

jmujica7153 3 years ago
Just look at the fractions Big Brown was in the first two legs which were fast, this horse at this distance (mile and half) should have had the lead although it was claimed that he was a step slow. No excuse Kent he could have rushed him up the rail for positioning like Ron Turcotte in the Belmont Stakes(1973) and he was a couple steps slow. Conclusion: Can't hold a speed horse at this distance pace is too slow ends up quitting like many other horses we've seen.
waywardson15 3 years ago
He was extremely rank the first 3/8 or so,if you let him go,you may not be able to get him to come back to you,not to mention we are talking about a 1 1/2 mile race. You will waste valuable energy, that you must have when approaching the 1/4 pole, meaning a jock must use his head and be patient(which Kent did perfectly). You call him a speed horse, well sure he has speed, but your inferring that he has to have the lead, that is not correct. He has been just off the lead before,CONT:

Horses who have to run the longest race in their lives,on a track that is known to be excessively deep, doing so on a patched hoof, with an abscess that did not respond to the original medication treatment, that missed exersize days, that missed workouts.....always deserve to be bet down to 1-4!!!!!

I'm still trying to fathom how Da'Tara ran a wire-to-wire mile and a half at 38-1. O_O
ridingxruffian 3 years ago
The first thing that you have to fathom is that how can everyone be so shocked that a horse with a 1/4 crack, an abscess that is not responding to treatment, who missed needed workouts and who missed exersize, ran a dull race! As for Da Tara at 38:1, in is called an overlay...the bettors blew it..he was simply the only speed horse in the race, who was given an easy lead and allowed to run at his own (slow) pace. Remove BB from the race and then go back and handicap it again.....
davisondad 3 years ago
Start by trying to fathom how anyone could think a horse who had a 1/4 crack, an abscess that was not responding to treatment, who missed workouts, who missed exersize sessions, would still dominate a race at 1 1/2 miles! That is what I can't fathom???? Da Tara was the only speed horse in the race and was allowed to set his own slow pace! When people bet with their hearts instead of their brains...38-1 shots win!!When people bet with their brains they cash huge tickets on 38-1 shots! Thanks!

shawnjeka 3 years ago
I personally believe it was the steroids. They put him on them for the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness and then take him off of them all of a sudden. You can't expect a horse to react good to that. His body didn't have enough time to adjust to the change. Or as nastylefthook1 said he could have lost interest and quit. If that horse did not want to run and win he wouldn't have. He didn't respond to Kent whatsoever in the last part of the race. Not Brown's fault though.
saddlebredlover13 3 years ago
You don't understand how steriods work....they allow muscles to recouperate faster, allowing a horse(or human) to workout more often, thereby building more muscle mass. BB was fighting a 1/4 crack and missed much of his workouts, so the Steriods did not play a part. a Steriod shot does not make any positive difference if you can not work out.
davisondad 3 years ago
Trainer was very arrogant before the race promosing a BB win to one and all. BB must go to Dubai to see if he can do the same thing that Curlin did. Bennie The Bull also has the talent to run in the world cup so lets see how the owner of BB and Bennie the bull plays this one out.

BillF147 3 years ago
The Blame Game coming from the Brown team in regards to the loss have been funny to read about in articles. Quite pathetically entertaining.
namesdntexist 3 years ago
Kent is pathetic. In a local newspaper he's blaming the man who opened the starter gates, saying the guy 'distracetd' Brown. Now, if the ambulances that follow the field and other people never bothered the horse before...
Winstrol is legal in NY, unfortunately. And hopefully after the congressional hearing, it will be banned for good! It's a form of cheating regardless.
namesdntexist 3 years ago
In the NY Daily News, Kent is blaming the man who stands by the gate. Saying that BB was 'distracted'. BB hasn't been 'distracted' from people and even ambulances that follow the field before. Kent is a pathetic creature. So is Dutrow. And the other post is right - BB broke out of the 1 post in his maiden and that didn't bother him. Gee..can they say 'escuses'?
namesdntexist 3 years ago
...what "medication" would ~this~ be?
Because you can't be referring to the Winstrol/Stanozolol steroid he'd been on, which IS legal in New York.

Kent had a brain fart! He had already let that horse run lenghts more than necessary by taking him way wide in both the Derby and the Preakness. He did it again(completely un-necessary) and found that BB did not have an engine. Jerry Baily was not critical of the ride. But in a million years JD would not ride a race like that!
bf160001 3 years ago
Absolutely true although he had no option in the Derby. Kent only had the brain fart because of Eibar Coa who wanted to have a piece of BB. First Tale of Ekati makes sure BB stays on the rail behind Dtara Second when BB settles in third outside of him Tale of Ekati gradually moves them 6 to 7 wide.
Personally I am glad Eibar did this because BB really hadn't been tested up to this point.
How can Bailey be critical he cost Smarty Jones the Triple Crown. Eddington worst Belmont ride ever.
Camotudo31 3 years ago
Jerry Bailey cant be critical of Kent when he(Jerry Bailey) had the worst ride in the Belmont ever. Remember how he rode Eddington was JB trying to win the race or did he go after Smarty Jones? How bad was it? He never rode Eddington again even when they need a late replacement Jockey for him Bailey was available sitting in Jocks room and he never got the call.
Like I said he can't be critical.
Camotudo31 3 years ago
Surely this horse coulda, shoulda, woulda took the lead on the rail, the other jocks, I dont think they would have tried to box Big Brown in as they would get blamed for the loss. If I was Kent, I would think that and let them be the cause before I did the maneuvers he pulled.

After the tragedy of Eight Belles in the Kentucky Derby this sport needed a TC winner more than anything. As for Peta. Go look up Ferdinand on this site and see what was done to this KD winner.
ladybelle24 3 years ago
Honestly they should've just let him have his head and take off. The time was so slow he could've lead the pace the entire way. Not to compare him to Secretariat, but whenever a horse in front of Big Red set a slow pace, he lost.
Also they took him of the steroids, which is not at all a good thing to do during mid-season, especially during the Triple Crown. I don't care if that horse was increased in condition because of the steroids, Dutrow's vet should not of let it happen.

Great announcing though

...I'm guessing/hoping you meant that sarcastically, considering that the dude mangled half the horses' names and spent more time talking about the loser than the winner.

It's because he was running for the Triple Crown!!!

kent rode terribly hey maybe the mafia was like hey midget the horse better lose or your gonna be losing more than a race

My husband thinks I'm nuts, well maybe, but I still think this happened and it stunned him.

big brown was not hurt he just didnt want to run
youngarnold4 3 years ago
I agree with you. Just goes to show PETA, if the horse does not want to run you can't make him.

Besides any injury or whatever, that was one of the worst rides i've ever seen in a feature race, down here in Australia the jockey would have been lucky to leave the course in one piece!why in hell did he havethe horse so bloody wide?
gratefultiger 3 years ago
Why isn't anyone giving Da'Tara respect? The colt ran a hell of a race! Made 12 furlongs look like a long sprint to the finish. Zito is the best, most prepared trainer going today! And he's a humble guy, who can't like that about someone.
gunloc26 3 years ago
His hoof was fine. Quarter cracks are easily fixed. They said they took him off the steroids that month even though they were legal steroids because they wanted to prove he was still a great horse. Haha suckers. =) I'm glad Da' Tara won.

Good race but commentary is very slow and boring, need to spice it up and make it faster like UK / HK / Aus racing commentators.

BB posted in the 1 hole his first out. Led through out and won by 10 lengths.
(and please don't discount my comment by saying it was a Turf race)

PETA needs to keep their noses out of everybody's business. they get pissed off way too easy over the dumbest crap. It is fun to get in front of a PETA rally and eat a piece of fried chicken in front of them and say that it is sooo good. they get so pissed off and they cant do anything or you can sue the shit out of them

Was Big Brown a flop, or a victim of his handlers?
IpodNooch 3 years ago
The jockey is a good guy...he put the horse's health first...more than I can say for the trainer...and it's not Big Brown's fault...he didn't give himself steroids...but if he goes on to stud, he'll be passing those weak front feet along to another generation...

i dont think these animals even know they are racing....just running to run.

Casino Drive had a hoof injury and they pulled him. I think the combination of the hoof and time missed practicing did it.
I can't help but wonder if Kent wasn't told he break BB if he sensed anything wrong.
The bottle of glue comment was disgusting. WTF is wrong with some people I'll never understand.

Big Brown is an extremely smart horse.

I still LOVE Big Brown, to all of those who think BB is a looser bc he lost this race, i have 1 thing to tell yall, EVERY great American race horse HAS LOST A Race!!!
BE109 3 years ago

I think its really sad.
