  • Nice little film,, thanks.Caved here a lot with a cadet group late 80s.Sump 1 was terrifying as my belt got stuck on something, blimey its only 6 feet!

  • Nice video Landyman well done .I like the old and new films with the excellent commentary .

  • I remember that shitty old barn we had to get changed in after, there was dryed mud everywhere so it didnt matter if you were clean you still had mud all over you. And there was a right draft, I really need to start doing caving again, I LOVE it!

  • brilliant. never been potholing and think i'd suddenly realise i was claustrophobic (especially the diving bit) but it's always intrigued me. the map suggests that these caves go on for some hundreds of metres?

The Entrances all look alike, the metal structure that seems to be built within the hole entrance like some kind of ladder/sleeve affair. Are they built like this to stop folk accidentally falling down them? (or is there a trap door that shuts over them?)

    dumb question but intrigued

  • @prozaccadillac Some are gated. Some are not. Diving caves gated.

Goatschurch at Burrington Combe is the one to do first. Open to public. Dry cave, good first time challenge. Get down there. 30 minutes from Bristol.

  • great video, It's the first time i've seen the 40 used. Dean (WCC)

  • Very good article comparing the difference of years in the explorations.

    Very interesting.

Santi Cantavella, Espeleo Club Castelló (España).

  • great vid, thanks alot. nice to see what swildons will be like.

  • Thanks, good music btw

  • Great cave, great video!

    Also what music is this?

  • Enigma but I can't remember the Album

  • Excellent video! I'm doing this cave for the first time next week and can't wait!

  • Nice side by side comparison of caving in the 60's and today. Additionally, I really hate cable ladders. :P

  • fantastic video and many amazing trips had here. does anyone know how i can record trips, i've been trying for a while but always too dark!!

  • WO! Ya'll still use ladders??

Great video! Really enjoyed it! Greetings from TAG!!

  • Thats a great video about Swildons - really enjoyed it!

  • I went down there for 3hours yest. They said it'd be wet but I wasnt expecting raging torrents and waterfalls. I cant count how many bruises I have. I almost lost the plot where there was a 4 foot drop down and I had to be pulled up from a small ledge over a smooth rock with no apparent hand grips, quite close to the exit not too far from the water chamber. Quite scary for a new caver even without the sump diving..exciting if youre wearing enough warm clothing and with enough experienced cavers.

  • NICE!!

I have so much to learn....

    RB

  • amazing film! whit what sort of program you made it???

  • Fantastic video - very well made and thoroughly enjoyable. Great job guys :o)

  • watching this because i went through sump 1 as my first ever sump yesterday :) Amazing old footage as well...

just one thing though, young men may not have changed, but neither have young women!!!!

    :P

  • great to see the old footage, we often go into swildons and i have fallen into those double pots plenty of times! great to see more ladies involved in caving !

  • Went caving there earlier today for the first time. It's so amazing there, so incredibly pretty =). And wet. My goodness it was wet!

  • I was in there. it was awesome

  • Excellent insight-good commentary

  • Worth showing this film at Hidden Earth perhaps?

    Steve

  • So gald we'd stoped using carbides when I first did this cave! I was probably 8 at the time and it was probably the first time I ever used a tube lamp [Im 17 now.] been caving since I was 3 1/2!

  • so cool

  • Brought back loads of memories from the 60s and 70s. I remember the 40ft before and after but the dry ways were always dry. I will have to do it again next year as a 60th birthday treat if I can find someone to take me.

  • I work for the BBC, we're currently making a programme for BBC One on British caving. For the programme we filmed in Swildons earlier this year. It's great to see other footage of it, the old archive footage is wonderful.

    Cheers,

    Gavin
