I see alot of liberals simply saying Andrew Sullivan got owned without actually pointing out what's wrong with what he said. Paul Ryan actually has a plan, a poor one, but alot more than anything the Democrats have. Obama hasn't acted or lead on this issue by producing a specific plan to attack entitlements. His laste two budgets have been a complete joke and if he can't get one past this year I for sure won't vote for him. He's incompetant.
@JackGlastra420 Ha ha. Typical ad hominem attacks. Care to explain exactly what I said that was wrong. Obama hasn't passed a budget in two years even when he had a democratically controlled House and Senate. So what exactly is wrong?
Andrew Sullivan gets Schooled by Maher, Spitzer and Anyone With Even A fraction Of A Brain on Paul Ryan and the Budget because he's an idiot who only knows how to get overly-emotional and attack people who don't agree with him.
c'mon people, it was Andrews last point that made sense. Spitzer is like every other dem or rep in that he wants to intervene everywhere around the world where there's problems, yet he's saying he wants to cut defense, that's hypocritical.
maybe you put up the wrong video... i was looking for the class to start... paul ryan is great just because he had a budget first?...most of the time the first guy to say something is wrong in almost every conversation.
I gave a thumbs down to this video. It's not that I agree or disagree with what Sullivan is saying, it's just that the most sensible comment (I think) in the video came from Katty Kay, who said "You have to do both" whilst Sullivan spoke over her. However, anything else she may have said you edited out, so I have to assume she meant both cut spending and raise taxes in order to pay off the debt. I'm off to find the unedited show to form my opinion.
Tell me you're joking. I just watched another video where Spitzer was talking about the need to expand the operation in Libya, now he's grandstanding talking about military cuts. Why hasn't your President proposed military cuts to counter Ryan's proposed Medicare cuts? Change!
@jdowfleetwood They're coming, don't worry. I don't agree with Spitzer on Libya, but I do find it interesting that the Iraq Hawks are all of a sudden afraid of NATO bombing Libya. I don't think I ever called George Bush "your" President, as much as I hated him. He was elected (at least once) so he was OUR President, just like Obama.
For the record, I'm actually a big fan of Sullivan. He's the most intelligent conservative public intellectual out there. And I don't mean that in a snarky way.
Why does Andrew Sullivan side with the GOP and buys into their ideology propaganda BS even though this is inconsistent and contradictory to who Mr. Sullivan as a person?
He is a traitor to the GLBT Community!
Regarding Ayn Rand, her books are not worth the paper it is written on except with, say, wiping my ass with the pages of Atlas Shrugged after taking a dump.
@j4unumber1 thank you. Ayn rand, aside from being a Terrible writer (her books, if you've read any, are basically a long set of radical-libertarian speeches, with a thin veneer of plot on top. Yes, let the rich go on strike because they have it so hard! No one should ever help anyone, ever! I also love when religious people quote her, a fervent atheist.
Just watched this episode and Sullivan held his own better than a lot of others who represent the conservative side, but he got schooled on this one and at a couple of other points.
@AceHoale When liberals look at other western countries they should not compare health care and other public services only. For example, the US population has grown by almost 90 million units since 1980 and could reach 500 million in this century. No offense intended, but it doesn´t look like a healthy growth pace for a first-world nation. There is an abvious link between increasing poverty and uncontrolled immigration, which ironically is used to strengthen the big government rhetoric.
We need at least a 45% budget cut in the first year. We can afford to cut defense 50% We also need to cut entitlements drastically. We could at least cut them 40%. It will be painful but we wont have a choice later. We will have a currency and bond crisis if not.
Hes forgetting the 19% of the budget we spend on interest on the debt. If we keep printing money how long do you think our creditors will keep those interest rates so low?
Removing the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy reduces the deficit by 50%. Medicare Part D was not paid for = $500B. The two wars were not paid for = $2T and growing.
Without just these 3 things, our debt would only be $5T.
If any FISCALLY conservative republican actually cared about the deficit, they would get rid of the Bush Tax cuts, allow Medicare to bargain with the Big Pharma for cheaper drugs (Part D bans this) and raise taxes (on EVERYONE) to pay for the wars.
@1Makyo Republicans will reduce the size of government. (Except the new agency to monitor ALL pregnancies to make sure EVERY ONE ends in a live birth... then, good luck!) No aid for the poor, children, the sick or the aged... just like Jesus said. (The U.S. is a Christian Nation? Laughable!)
Republicans will also reduce taxes (for the wealthy and ALL businesses). Because the real problem is that the rich aren't rich enough. If only they controlled 99% of America, instead of the measly 90% today.
@kefluv Let me guess. You are under 30. Attended our public school system. And you are homosexual. Right? I will check now. Impossible to penetrate the thick skulls out there who have been indoctrinated to believe in multi-culturalism, political correctness, and tolerance for inferior thought. Hopeless vacuum unfolds for many of you people. Not my fault. I have tried and tried to bulldoze the education system in this country since the 60s.
@1Makyo Let me guess, you're a dick, right? Calling me names (Gay? Really? Is that all you have?) just proves that you can't back up ANYTHING you say.
Don't like 'Multi-culturalism'? Move to Saudi Arabia, because THAT is what makes America GREAT! 'Political correctness' (aka being sensitive to other peoples feelings and having respect for them) is what separates us from sociopaths and as for 'tolerance for inferior thought'... I DO have tolerance for YOUR inferiority, that's why I bring FACTS.
@kefluv I checked. You say you are 39 years old. You have one video you like to watch about how to get girls, and you are a total loser. Sorry I wasted my time responding to your comments here.
@1Makyo I AM 39 years old. The video on my account IS there, I don't know how it got there AND I don't spend all my time trying to post videos to prove how cool I am. So am I a 'total loser'... maybe?
But what I DO use youtube for, is an exchange of ideas.
I am a die-hard LIBERAL who will debate with ANYBODY (as long as they are fact-based). I have facts, critical thinking and an understanding of ACTUAL American history on my side... other than whiny name-calling, what do you have?
@kefluv Deny that you are4 homosexual and a liar and a thief and a cheat and I will debate anyhing with you. When did you stop lying? When did you quit cheating and when did you stop stealing?
@1Makyo I stated the FACTS about the costs of Medicare Part D, the Bush Tax cuts for the Rich and the Iraq/Afghanistan Wars, mocked republicans for not 'really' wanting to fix the deficit (I even gave solutions!) and about how they want a 'small government' that monitors EVERY pregnancy.
Your rebuttals: 'You're a gay cheating lying loser!"
Wow, what a brilliant series of thoughtful retorts! Were you on the Debate Team at Oxford?
BTW, whats 'honorable' about calling someone 'gay'?
@kefluv I will apologize a little. Not much. I am a semiotician, dude, not a futurist , but one who looks at signs. I felt you would know what I was talking about. Too much credit I guess.
Afghanistan is the wrong war? I thought Iraq was the wrong war? Would you PLEASE make up your minds. BTW, slashing Defense Spending AND taking ALL of the money the "rich " have will still not take care of the debt. It's much bigger than that folks. We spend 47k a SECOND. Let that sink in.

Obama is an echo of Paul Ryan and his debt commission proves it.
That was the dumbest "schooling" I've seen in a while. Another sensationalized title for the gullible fools.
$200 billion cuts to the defense a year; that's total of $2 trillion in a decade. Problem solved. Now go play with you $500 billion "left over" Defense budget and cry me a river.
Sullivan schools nobody, and is quite wrong. Ryan is playing loose with numbers and facts. He's a twit. And no, they aren't cutting the right things. They really do need to stop the ridiculous handouts to the rich and start enabling the other 98% of their country's population instead of hammering them repeatedly.
Profligate military spending is the problem. Eliminating social support programs hardly suffices. 10% of americans who own over 2/3‘s of the nation’s wealth don’t care. Something has to give, and that’s the massive US military complex driving the nation to bankruptcy. If the US loses its position in the world power game, who cares? It does leaves the privileged vulnerable, but if they expect average americans to rally to their cause, and continue to shell out, they’ve got something coming!
@townsendjean So you liquidate the top ten percent and you are okay for what one year? What next? Also seeing how Nato can not seem to handle Lybia, you better pray to god that the downward spiral that Russia is in doesn't turn violent and fractious. Social democracy killed what ever ability or will the europeans had to look after them selves.
Frankly sir, what average american really cares about libya? ... and for that matter about iraq or afghan. Only those who have substantial stakes in the american military complex, and are reaping tremendous wealth from these conflicts care. It’s now quite clear whose getting the shaft for these military costs and the hardship that goes with it.
I’m totally with you! Most americans couldn’t give a shit about Libya/Iraq/Afgahn, let alone understand what’s happening there! Fuck all the moralizing, let those whose who are raking it in from these wars pay the bill! Enough of these obscene tax breaks leaving the average american holding the can!
@townsendjean It was a comment on how when it comes to an effective military force the USA is on their own. If you don't see that point you don't see that point. Don't pretend that we are talking about something other then what we are. What is real entertaining is that people like you think you are exploring this new idea and argument, when all you are doing is throwing up what was said by the European intellectual class post WW1 almost word by word.
Sullivan is wrong. The military wastes money on weapons that aren't needed or used. The rich should be taxed at the same levels as the Eisenhower adminstration. Sulliven was punked.
its funny that Maher is using prop analogies right out of Glenn Becks playbook. I always knew they hated him because they envy his ability to inform society of the B.S. these progressive D-bags want so desperately to keep hidden.
@flynstl1 Idiot, Bill is using prop analogies to make fun of them. Look up the episode he brought that out, the one with Kevin Smith, and you'll see why he used food as a prop.
@MassXavier I try my best not to watch Maher's arrogantly uninformed rants. I only notice them when it gets pointed out how stupid some of his non-fellow travelers make him look.
@flynstl1 So you think he's uninformed when you only watch selectively chosen clips to "prove" what you think is "true." This "rant" goes on more after this clip ends, but since that is not fed to you I doubt you'll look that up as well. Oh well. Typical and not surprising.
@MassXavier Well, he is either completely uninformed or just too stupid to see reality or an outright liar. Take your pick. I was aware of that long before these clips. Either way, how many of these clips have to circulate before you realize he is a fraud. There comes a point when the argument that these are anomalies ceases to have any weight. Just because the idiots in the audience hoots a hollers every time he opens his mouth doesn't make his words any less ridiculous.
im my experience building mini mansions for 30 years i have found the best way to motivate a rich person to work harder and create job is by hurting them in their pocket
if you take money from the rich they work very hard to get it back
Over the next 10 years, Obama wants to spend $46.7 trillion, Paul Ryan wants to spend $40 trillion... that would LOWER the deficit we actually have by 6.7 trillion, of by about half, this is a MUST.
$36 billion is chump change, yes, but the GOP wanted $60 billion in cuts to the Dems' ridiculously low $4 billion. We only have one party, the GOP, trying to make the responsible choices, while the Democrats demagogue us to death as usual while spending us to oblivion... it's cynical and reckless.
meat ax - the perfect analogy. they arent SOLVING anything (ie, why we keep having budgetary overruns). but Sullivan is right in that obama and the dems should have led on this from day 1 - but because they didnt and instead capitulated at every turn - ryan's plan is getting the attention (and because its now republican-led house, it has the backing).
Schools them? Really? Privatizing the nations social programs is the way? How do the repug repubs so easily convince the sheeple to go against there own interests as the cut taxes for the uber rich??? flocking morons...

its funny that Maher is using prop analogies right out of Glenn Becks playbook.

I only notice them when it gets pointed out how stupid some of his non-fellow travelers make him look.
flynstl1 10 months ago
@flynstl1 So you think he's uninformed when you only watch selectively chosen clips to "prove" what you think is "true." This "rant" goes on more after this clip ends, but since that is not fed to you I doubt you'll look that up as well. Oh well. Typical and not surprising.
MassXavier 10 months ago
@MassXavier Well, he is either completely uninformed or just too stupid to see reality or an outright liar. Take your pick. I was aware of that long before these clips. Either way, how many of these clips have to circulate before you realize he is a fraud. There comes a point when the argument that these are anomalies ceases to have any weight. Just because the idiots in the audience hoots a hollers every time he opens his mouth doesn't make his words any less ridiculous.

im my experience building mini mansions for 30 years i have found the best way to motivate a rich person to work harder and create job is by hurting them in their pocket
if you take money from the rich they work very hard to get it back
tax the rich

I don't agree with Spitzer on everything (Israel), but he's right on the money here.
