Some people like to argue that to get shots like the ones in this vid you have to be at like a pro level. Guess what, if you want the results of any camera to look great you have to know your camera. Just because you've got a RED doesn't mean your crap autumatically looks fantastic. Even if that were true there are still a lot of crappy, good lookin' Hollywood films out there cause people can't tell a decent story anymore.
I do remember talking and listening to a pro who was hired by Canon to work on this video and others. He swears the quality was comparable to the $170,000 Viper cameras. Said he would bet his reputation on it. Mmmmm I wonder?
the reason their shots look so good is because theyr using a lense converter and film lenses. without them it would look quite standard. is this HDV aswell ? and also why are they on about auto focus? who the hell uses auto focus on a film set at that level?!
I was just about to say the same thing - then I read your comment. LOL. I think he sounds fine - it's what he's been told to say that's the problem. Sack the script writer. To transform what inhabits your minds eye into visible form - should be make your imagination relaity with the Canon...what a laugh.
Does anybody know what's the music at 0:41 to 1:18? That actually persuaded me to watch this video... Although it's predictable, but I was really surprised when I saw what they actually needed for those shots!
This all goes to show that with a decent camera, alot of other professionals, a director, d.o.p, lighting technicians, professional monitors, jibs, track, dollys and trucks you really can get beautiful video. I'm F*ing with you, of course that all costs a bundle, way more than the camera, or most prosumer budgets. It's not the World of video I know anyway!
very well its a great cam i need a little practice on it but ill be uploading my first promo shoot with it next weekend so youll be able to see for yourself. i am looking forwrad to vegas pro 9 being released so i can update from 8
I'll be able to afford one in about seven years. Gramps Spielberg. No doubt the XL H1 will still be cutting edge technology. (....) "XL H1? Haven't seen one of those in ages. Can we interest you in the Z12 4000? It's only 20 grand. Without the lens, of course."
I could direct you to the alternative which would be the 5DmkII, which is about that price!. I believe their working on putting a CMOS sensor in for this camera instead of the CCD. With all those extra features needed for production that this camera has, it'll be amazing!
The 5D is a still camera with 1080i capability, it's not and never will be a full HD camera, to be fair I've seen some films made on a 5D and they are sweet, but still, xlh1 is more practical.
well seeing as danny boyle shot 28 days later on a xl1... think what you could film with this bad boy!!! you can make a feature film with this with ease!!
i think when can see much better quality than this...somthing wrong either with the site or the flash or the broadcast i think !...cuz the camera can do much better of what we ve seen !
Looks like broadcast quality, but I've seen a better cinematic feel with the Panasonic GS400 with a homemade 35mm DOF Adapter; I can't lie. But this could be because of a difference of how this video was compressed/exported onto YouTube compared to the GS400 footage I've seen. Regardless, a pretty crisp image.
i want one of this cameras they look fantastic very atractive yet very strange modern design camera. Is this camera a profetional media camera or a handy home family camera? to me this camera looks more like its design to seat on a long movie poles rather then holding the camera.. its more like a open machine only design tos eat on profetional long poles and stuff but thena gain it has to be a modern 2000's year camera. Very futureristic. But very pricy. Still its years old
most of these shots i could use the stock XL-H1 with correct Aperture adjustments and manual focus, easily accomplish. What really makes it nice is the jib/cranes/dollies/steadyz they used for panning. That is what will set even the cheapest shot off to something nice.
this video isn't bullshit at all. The Xl is amazing..and of course u won't get that footage with only the XL. but as you should see..they are using different lenses and the 35mm adapter.
WHICH makes a big difference. of course its marketing...they wanna sell it..
they don't mention if they used a 35 mmm lens adapter to the canon camera to get some of the nice DOF of the shots. It's nice marketing, but they didn't explain what kind of lenses they were using, and if they didn't...what was the default lens they used?
Hmm lets see here $8,999 for a hd camera or $3,000 aprox for a 3k camera with the same depth of field as a super16/35mm camera?I think cannon Panasonic Sony JVC Are Deffently going to have to step it up in the next couple of years ,which begs to ask what the retail value of this xl-h1 will cost 2 summers from know,Im sure cannon sony etc will figure some marketing scheme....
The red scarlet is certainly a great camera, yet the reason many independants are shot on the XL series or the JVC pro cameras or the panavision cameras is because they have a very open architecture, the RED Scarlet and RED 1 are basicly the image sensor with a lense and an lcd, no shoulder mount, no high quality eye piece, to get remotely near the open architecture of even the xl1, you would have to purchase 10 grand worth of upgrades
Question: Has canon come out with anything with 2K-4K resolution yet? If canon wants to outdo Dalsa digital or the RED ONE, it needs to get on the ball game.
the camera is only half the story, all that money and you still get a POS mic,but they expect you to use external,so why even put a mic on the camera in the first place ,forgo the mic and spend more on the audio conectivity,or the lens.
Well, if you just want to get up and shoot something quickly u really do need one built in, for examples; fast jurnalisum, often they have to get a story in 30 min! Although i agree, they should have upgraded the quality of the built in mic.
too bad they had 1000 dollar dollies and cranes to make those shots really smooth. not to mention the thousand dollar shader hood attached to the filter mount. i'm not complaining, i'm still leaning toward getting one in a month.
I have an XH A1 as well, and would love to get this camera. Canon makes high quality equipment. Also, did anyone else notice the music in this vid was either from Jurassic Park or sounded just like it?
Damn. Makes my GL2 look like a plaything. Now what about aspect ratio? This demo is presented in 16:9, but if you are distributing to theaters, you'll need a 35mm print. So does the camera have a setting that, i don't know, crops or letterboxes it to 2.35:1?
Im pretty Sure, I've read the specs and it has a letter box setting. Another camera for standard output (not HD) is the Canon XL1S i'm getting one this month
P.S. Does any one know where u can find a good deal on canons ??
At half the price of the red one... It's nice and all but I wounder how it will stack up to the red mini. From what I hear the red mini is suposed to be around 2000 dollars.
That was awesome! I saw "The Watchmaker" demo in the 2006 CES in Las Vegas. They actually recreated one of the sets in the movie, right down to the minutest details. The presentation at CES was the best I saw. Canon basically did a live multi-cam broadcast with the xlh1's. They gave everyone a DVD package and the footage was stunning! Class act!
this camera is great, but it has horrible dynamic range and a bit of a fine grain issue. Probably from the packed pixels on the CCD. 1.6 MP on a 1/3"? Not the best idea.
I've been using this camera for a while now and it's OK. The lens is nice, the biggest problem is the crappy HDV format. Oh and the viewfinder sucks. A nice enough picture, but I'm going RED next.
I think they are overrating this camera, I think they are just overexited, that camera wouldnt work for future films unless they would use REAL heavy post-production filter work
im here searching on youtube to find me some nice informations wich camera to buy... is there any big diferences in resolution betwin miniDV, HD ,etc.?
Go HD if you can. Despite what fanboys will tell you, most any HD camera will give you results. The Canon HD is a reliable model. If you can't afford HD, but have access to miniDV, such as an XL2, I recommend using a prime lens adapter. It will allow you a depth of field comparable to film, and will allow your DP to light for film (vs. video).
yeah... miniDV: 470 (i think or 480), HD: 720, 1080, and up to 4K (but unless your a billionaire i doubt you'll be spending money on any cameras that go above 1080.
ummm yes the XL2 is a good choice. I owned one for about a year but I actually just sold it and I bout the XH-A1. The main reson why I got rid of it is because it was really big and bulky. And I had to put it together all the time. if you plan on needing a camera for grab and go shooting don't get the XL2. But if not then it is a good choice. But I would look into the xh-a1 or a similar HD cam. Same price wayy better performance.
no need to insult people, everyone shoot with the camera that they like the HD look is the same in every camera, but the diference is in the optics and there the CANON has a way superior lence than the HVX and that makes a diference to me, and also remember that the camera helps but is the talent of the videographer and film makers what really make an image looks great
Some people like to argue that to get shots like the ones in this vid you have to be at like a pro level. Guess what, if you want the results of any camera to look great you have to know your camera. its a digital camera so it records onto digital tape.... miniDV or DV-Cam.

If you can't afford HD, but have access to miniDV, such as an XL2, I recommend using a prime lens adapter. It will allow you a depth of field comparable to film, and will allow your DP to light for film (vs. video).

yeah... miniDV: 470 (i think or 480), HD: 720, 1080, and up to 4K (but unless your a billionaire i doubt you'll be spending money on any cameras that go above 1080.

where was the antique city filmed at? I am making a movie, and I need a scene like that one.

ummm yes the XL2 is a good choice. Same price wayy better performance.

hahaha bullshitters.
so...how much CANON paid you for this talkie talkie?
HVX is the choice.

no need to insult people, everyone shoot with the camera that they like the HD look is the same in every camera, but the diference is in the optics and there the CANON has a way superior lence than the HVX and that makes a diference to me, and also remember that the camera helps but is the talent of the videographer and film makers what really make an image looks great

bluecatprod: yes the xl2 is an exceptional camera. If you don't need hi def, then it's the best choice.
