  • Some people like to argue that to get shots like the ones in this vid you have to be at like a pro level. Guess what, if you want the results of any camera to look great you have to know your camera. Just because you've got a RED doesn't mean your crap autumatically looks fantastic. Even if that were true there are still a lot of crappy, good lookin' Hollywood films out there cause people can't tell a decent story anymore.

  • I have an XL1s, I want the new HD, Can I record straight to DTE HD instead of usign the tape??

  • Can anyone tell me why I should choose (or not) for a (HD) camcorder (like this one here) and not choose for a (HD DSLR) camera that can make videos?

    THANKS!

  • I'm pretty sure some of today's camera would outperform this, like the xf300 of the EX3

  • Im wondering what kind of set up they have on that camera. Can anyone help me out with their rig?

  • I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT CANON XLSERIES,... IF YOU WANNA KILL ME SOFTLY STOLE MY CANON CAMs... THE CANON IS PART OF MY BODY!!!

  • @ROMEUSK8LINS100 LOL. I've had my XL1 since 2002, great camera in her day. Going for an XL2. Fantastic set of cameras!

    Peace!

  • Jurrasic Park soundtrack lol

  • I do remember talking and listening to a pro who was hired by Canon to work on this video and others. He swears the quality was comparable to the $170,000 Viper cameras. Said he would bet his reputation on it. Mmmmm I wonder?

  • @vexamatic coming from an hdv camera? I'm sure he was advertising Canon.

  • I just bought one today!! $3000 mint condition. now i dont know what to do with it!! ohh yeah i need to get rid of my XL-2 !

  • cut, cut ,cut

  • whoever filmed this didnt do it in perfect quality compared to other ppl who used this cam on youtube

  • @Budokaiman1 YouTube did not supper HD uploads in May of 2007.

  • @Budokaiman1

Watch the origional footage, (we could not post HD in 2007) so you are seeing compressed images,

  • the reason their shots look so good is because theyr using a lense converter and film lenses. without them it would look quite standard. is this HDV aswell ? and also why are they on about auto focus? who the hell uses auto focus on a film set at that level?!

  • @doylieboy1 It says in the video they used the standard lens!

  • @doylieboy1

To clarify, I did use all the origional lenses. No converters, primes, etc.

  • People, they used the jurassic park theme at the end because this camera is a BEAST! Absolute monster!

  • couldv uploaded it in better qualityy tbf this is 2 years old.

  • @doylieboy1 YouTube did not support HD when they upload this video.

  • thats why i wrote "TBF ITS 2 YEARS OLD" ;)

  • whats with the jurrassic park theme at the end?

  • haha yea wtf

  • im thinking... should i get the ex3 or xlh1... i have an xl2 now time to switch to HD

  • i am getting to use it for next short horror film and feature film :P

  • I have xh-a1, it's the best... add macro filters for insane closeups!

  • Love it,

    I want this bad.

the only thing was, what was with the Jurasic Park music at the very end?

  • i wonder if they'd have to pay royalties.

  • I want it badderer! (a lot more)

  • where is the real video or is it a spot for tv (im german, sorry for mistakes)

  • @filmjunge1 I think this is just a ad for canon. It's not really a movie.

  • Possibly the worst narration ever. What the F*$K is he going on about? Did the writer even finish his sentences?? Disgusting.

Nice camera though. Handy little thing.

  • haha you made me laugh so hard i almost pissed myself dude hahahaha i know.. wtf is going on?! hahha

  • little?

  • I was just about to say the same thing - then I read your comment. LOL. I think he sounds fine - it's what he's been told to say that's the problem. Sack the script writer. To transform what inhabits your minds eye into visible form - should be make your imagination relaity with the Canon...what a laugh.

  • Does anybody know what's the music at 0:41 to 1:18? That actually persuaded me to watch this video... Although it's predictable, but I was really surprised when I saw what they actually needed for those shots!

  • This all goes to show that with a decent camera, alot of other professionals, a director, d.o.p, lighting technicians, professional monitors, jibs, track, dollys and trucks you really can get beautiful video. I'm F*ing with you, of course that all costs a bundle, way more than the camera, or most prosumer budgets. It's not the World of video I know anyway!

  • Well if you add a little imagination, you woudn't need lighting techs, jibs, tracks, etc etc.

  • (salary)

  • how much do good directors roughly get?

  • $8,000.00

  • The music that starts at 00:42 is the most overused chord scale.

  • what on earth is a chord scale.... you mean chord progression?:P

  • What about at the very end where they use the jurassic park theme

  • just bought mine woohoo

  • very well its a great cam i need a little practice on it but ill be uploading my first promo shoot with it next weekend so youll be able to see for yourself. i am looking forwrad to vegas pro 9 being released so i can update from 8

  • I'll be able to afford one in about seven years. Gramps Spielberg. No doubt the XL H1 will still be cutting edge technology. (....) "XL H1? Haven't seen one of those in ages. Can we interest you in the Z12 4000? It's only 20 grand. Without the lens, of course."

  • yea, spend 6k on a h1 or 17k on a Red... silly boy.

  • haha spend 3k on the RED get the same results as a 35mm, silly boy

  • hehe, please direct me to a 3k RED camera... I'm interested. since the body on it's own cost 10/12k.

  • I could direct you to the alternative which would be the 5DmkII, which is about that price!. I believe their working on putting a CMOS sensor in for this camera instead of the CCD. With all those extra features needed for production that this camera has, it'll be amazing!

  • The 5D is a still camera with 1080i capability, it's not and never will be a full HD camera, to be fair I've seen some films made on a 5D and they are sweet, but still, xlh1 is more practical.

  • hah don't want a RED? don't get one. Go rent a 35mm for $2000 a day, lets see how that works out for you. No one said REDs were for nubs

  • @AndersonReel or get a dslr and bunch of lenses and a grip for the same money...

  • well seeing as danny boyle shot 28 days later on a xl1... think what you could film with this bad boy!!! you can make a feature film with this with ease!!

  • You Tube compression sucks in this video; it's not the camera. If I wanted to sell this camera, I'd pull this video in two seconds flat.

  • i think when can see much better quality than this...somthing wrong either with the site or the flash or the broadcast i think !...cuz the camera can do much better of what we ve seen !

  • Looks like broadcast quality, but I've seen a better cinematic feel with the Panasonic GS400 with a homemade 35mm DOF Adapter; I can't lie. But this could be because of a difference of how this video was compressed/exported onto YouTube compared to the GS400 footage I've seen. Regardless, a pretty crisp image.

  • i want one of this cameras they look fantastic very atractive yet very strange modern design camera. Is this camera a profetional media camera or a handy home family camera? to me this camera looks more like its design to seat on a long movie poles rather then holding the camera.. its more like a open machine only design tos eat on profetional long poles and stuff but thena gain it has to be a modern 2000's year camera. Very futureristic. But very pricy. Still its years old

  • dude it's only been out for like year :/ i think you are thinking of the Canon XL2, the XL-H1's standard definition counterpart.

  • I want one!!!

  • Canon XL1 all the way p to the Canon XL-H1 are awesome cameras.

  • most of these shots i could use the stock XL-H1 with correct Aperture adjustments and manual focus, easily accomplish. What really makes it nice is the jib/cranes/dollies/steadyz they used for panning. That is what will set even the cheapest shot off to something nice.

  • this vid it`s just bull.... !! the XL H1 isn`t capable of such footage. it`s just a marketing stunt

  • this video isn't bullshit at all. The Xl is amazing..and of course u won't get that footage with only the XL. but as you should see..they are using different lenses and the 35mm adapter.

WHICH makes a big difference. of course its marketing...they wanna sell it..

  • It's not about the camera, but what's in your head. You sure you still mean what you said?

  • nice camera... horrible production! gives me nightmares watching it

  • they don't mention if they used a 35 mmm lens adapter to the canon camera to get some of the nice DOF of the shots. It's nice marketing, but they didn't explain what kind of lenses they were using, and if they didn't...what was the default lens they used?

  • stupid marketing, if they mentioned it, they could sell the 35mm lens with it to..

  • the adapter and the lens cost more than the camera itself...

  • u can see that they are using it. They even mention that adapter on their website!

The camera itself can't make such footage!

  • u need the 35MM lens for this...I think.

  • of course u do...as you can see

  • looks like a movie camera someone would use.

  • What format does it record to MiniDV? 32? 16? if its digital... im confused...

  • its a digital camera so it records onto digital tape.... miniDV or DV-Cam.

Almost all professional and consumer digital cameras record to tape. Newer cameras record to card or disc.. although this doesnt improve quality!

Film such as 32 or 16mm are exclusively for movies and TV ad's ect..

  • Does anyone know the name of the song at 0:41?

  • Most likely a original song composed for this thing.

  • It sounds like one of the scors originaly made for Jurassic park, well worth looking into.

  • Hmm lets see here $8,999 for a hd camera or $3,000 aprox for a 3k camera with the same depth of field as a super16/35mm camera?I think cannon Panasonic Sony JVC Are Deffently going to have to step it up in the next couple of years ,which begs to ask what the retail value of this xl-h1 will cost 2 summers from know,Im sure cannon sony etc will figure some marketing scheme....

  • The red scarlet is certainly a great camera, yet the reason many independants are shot on the XL series or the JVC pro cameras or the panavision cameras is because they have a very open architecture, the RED Scarlet and RED 1 are basicly the image sensor with a lense and an lcd, no shoulder mount, no high quality eye piece, to get remotely near the open architecture of even the xl1, you would have to purchase 10 grand worth of upgrades

  • That would be magic if I could see it in HD.

  • Question: Has canon come out with anything with 2K-4K resolution yet? If canon wants to outdo Dalsa digital or the RED ONE, it needs to get on the ball game.

  • Well yes, but keep in mind this camera (and probably this video) came out long before the RED. I'm sure everyone will eventually catch up.

  • the camera is only half the story, all that money and you still get a POS mic,but they expect you to use external,so why even put a mic on the camera in the first place ,forgo the mic and spend more on the audio conectivity,or the lens.

  • Well, if you just want to get up and shoot something quickly u really do need one built in, for examples; fast jurnalisum, often they have to get a story in 30 min! Although i agree, they should have upgraded the quality of the built in mic.

  • SD CARD???...

  • too bad they had 1000 dollar dollies and cranes to make those shots really smooth. not to mention the thousand dollar shader hood attached to the filter mount. i'm not complaining, i'm still leaning toward getting one in a month.

  • $1,000 dollar jib? I don't think so...

  • Shame the camera couldn't have written the narration!! What a sack of cheesy balls.

  • just bought one!!!yesss. just need to figure out hot the fucker works

  • somebody buy me one

  • me too!!! :) im currently suffering with the HV20

  • you tube doesnt do justice to a £200:00 camcorder, let alone The Canon XL H1..but its great to try out new videos on the masses.

  • brilliant camera.

youtube doesn't even nearly do it justice.....

  • Nice Jurassic Park music at the end..

  • i noticed that too

  • This is great! I wish manufacturers would post videos displaying each cameras footage. Good job though!

  • I have an XH A1 as well, and would love to get this camera. Canon makes high quality equipment. Also, did anyone else notice the music in this vid was either from Jurassic Park or sounded just like it?

  • i love watching making of videos so cool!!!! great camera also i have an xh-a1

  • Im in love!

  • me to

  • most people just rent this camera. i have a gl2 also

  • Excuse me itswrittenproduction. Who Does Your Narration? :)

  • Damn. Makes my GL2 look like a plaything. Now what about aspect ratio? This demo is presented in 16:9, but if you are distributing to theaters, you'll need a 35mm print. So does the camera have a setting that, i don't know, crops or letterboxes it to 2.35:1?

  • most videos that are shot in HD now are kept at the 16:9 aspect ratio.

  • Im pretty Sure, I've read the specs and it has a letter box setting. Another camera for standard output (not HD) is the Canon XL1S i'm getting one this month

P.S. Does any one know where u can find a good deal on canons ??

  • Excellent video! I'm very impressed! The 'behind the scenes' action is always so interesting.

  • I totally agree! The footage was awesome! I was invited to the Chicago stop of the Canon Roadshow. It was really cool!

  • Where can I find one of these cameras for the best price, i need one, tanx

  • At half the price of the red one... It's nice and all but I wounder how it will stack up to the red mini. From what I hear the red mini is suposed to be around 2000 dollars.

  • I love.

  • That was awesome! I saw "The Watchmaker" demo in the 2006 CES in Las Vegas. They actually recreated one of the sets in the movie, right down to the minutest details. The presentation at CES was the best I saw. Canon basically did a live multi-cam broadcast with the xlh1's. They gave everyone a DVD package and the footage was stunning! Class act!

  • Can't wait to get mine!

  • this camera is great, but it has horrible dynamic range and a bit of a fine grain issue. Probably from the packed pixels on the CCD. 1.6 MP on a 1/3"? Not the best idea.

  • I am saving for one of those

  • I've been using this camera for a while now and it's OK. The lens is nice, the biggest problem is the crappy HDV format. Oh and the viewfinder sucks. A nice enough picture, but I'm going RED next.

  • i'm getting me one

  • god I want that camera all I have is a dumb sony handycam with windows movie maker xp.

  • I WANT ONE :((((((((((((((

  • Overrated? Keep thinking that. This camera is amazing. Dont buy it, because I don't want everyone and their brother with this camera...its all mine

  • wow, that actually looks nice.

  • I think they are overrating this camera, I think they are just overexited, that camera wouldnt work for future films unless they would use REAL heavy post-production filter work

  • what about the xh a1 it is superior or more less the same?

  • Believe it or not, they are virtually the exact same camera... the XL H1 just has interchangeable lenses and gen-lock...

  • LOL. It's like Pee Wee's Adventure.

  • amazing

  • HDMI xapture card =1920x1080 ...what do u say?

  • How does 24p look on that camera?

Does it resemble 35mm film, in movies?

  • hi realy nice footage, perfect quality, can you tell me what format you gave the video to you tube? many thanks neil

  • im here searching on youtube to find me some nice informations wich camera to buy... is there any big diferences in resolution betwin miniDV, HD ,etc.?

  • Go HD if you can. Despite what fanboys will tell you, most any HD camera will give you results. The Canon HD is a reliable model. If you can't afford HD, but have access to miniDV, such as an XL2, I recommend using a prime lens adapter. It will allow you a depth of field comparable to film, and will allow your DP to light for film (vs. video).

  • THX!

  • yeah... miniDV: 470 (i think or 480), HD: 720, 1080, and up to 4K (but unless your a billionaire i doubt you'll be spending money on any cameras that go above 1080.

  • where was the antique city filmed at? I am making a movie, and I need a scene like that one.

  • ummm yes the XL2 is a good choice. I owned one for about a year but I actually just sold it and I bout the XH-A1. The main reson why I got rid of it is because it was really big and bulky. And I had to put it together all the time. if you plan on needing a camera for grab and go shooting don't get the XL2. But if not then it is a good choice. But I would look into the xh-a1 or a similar HD cam. Same price wayy better performance.

  • hahaha bullshitters.

so...how much CANON paid you for this talkie talkie?

    HVX is the choice.

  • no need to insult people, everyone shoot with the camera that they like the HD look is the same in every camera, but the diference is in the optics and there the CANON has a way superior lence than the HVX and that makes a diference to me, and also remember that the camera helps but is the talent of the videographer and film makers what really make an image looks great

  • so true

  • Thanks, because i was debating between the Canon XL2 or The Panasonic DVX 100 series.

  • bluecatprod: yes the xl2 is an exceptional camera. If you don't need hi def, then it's the best choice.

  • Hello, i am planning on shooting music videos. i need to know if the Xl2 (standard def) is a good choice, please reply.

  • Hello, Bluecatprod...yes, XL2 are nice cameras...is a very pro kind, you need to know the camera well so you could take advantage 100% of its use.

    Take Care,

    Carlos Quinones
