A well written 2:00 song has the impact of a half hour of contemplation, while a poorly written 6:00 song is over in what seems to be a heartbeat and and leaves you with nothing but a lost 6:00. Or worse, the lost possibility of listening to 3 well written 2:00 songs.
@carmichael2411 How can anyone but the writer and original singer of the song define it? Tim wrote the tune Scott Walker later recorded it and about 40 other people at least , you may like Scotts version better , but that does not make it definative, just your taste.
It's the first time I've heard this great original Tim Hardin version. What a wonderful song it is - One of my best loved from the Scott 2- Engel / Walker Album. Beautifully sung by Tim Hardin for sure, but to hear Scott Engel sing this; well, it's absolutely sublime........
No one but we do have some singer songwriters who listened to Tim, The canadian singer Ron Sexsmith asked that his album be produced like Tim Hardin 1 and 2, if you listen t his album Cobble Stone Run , if you close your eyes some songs do sound like Tim, It is funny Tim died 29nyears ago but when you listen to him he gets better each year!
I wish I had gotten to know him...he was a distant cousin of mine...thru John Wesley Hardin. I so loved his voice and wish he had chosen to live. Be at peace, cuz.
Hwas not in fact related to him , just a tall takle to bolster his own outlaw image , his widow Susan admits this fact , he did not realize that being Tim Hardin was enough.
This is one of my favourites of Tim's. I have been listening to this track quite a lot at home recently. I think he put a lot of feeling into everything he sung. I also admire his superb voice control. A little masterpiece. Thanks for posting this.
As well as Okkervil River, who actually did an entire concept album surrounded about ideas sprung from this song - which is the leadoff track on their album "Black Sheep Boy." Amazing stuff. Check it out.
Strummer from the States? Those crazy Americans. I am from Canada and saw the Clash live in 1981. What an awesome show. They blew the crowd away with a blistering set. Still one of the best live shows I have ever seen.
Tim Hardin was indeed a genius. Such a soulful voice, great phrasing and delivery. And, of course, a master songwriter! Fabulous!

Okkervil RIver also have a very nice, respectful version of this song. If we all can relate, are we really all black sheep?

i'm glad you like the Strummer being form the States, over here he is a true legend, what of his legacy in the States?
sustitutelover 3 years ago
Yeah he's pretty much a legend in the states with like older people I guess lol.
I'm 14, but my mom used to listen to the clash, and she listened to the mescaleros.
So I guess younger people dont understand how good of music this is, there all into the popular, sucky music now.
AshleyRox14 3 years ago
Well Asley Rocks is all i can say, now how many 14 years olds can say they listen to the Clash

In the movie "The Future is Unwritten", about Strummer, they play him playing this song while the film shows childhood photos of Joe's late brother.
