Talvela sang Kilpinen songs like no one else could. He was such an honest, true and pure basso. I wonder what Yrjoe Kilpinen (1892-1959) would have thought if he had been able to hear his great music performed with such majestic beauty.
He often sang at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. A friend of mine had met him at a post office in Berlin and asked him for an autogram. Talvela was very kind and nice and said: "Next season I will sing in the Deutsche Oper Berlin, too. I hope you will be in the audience."
I'm a Finnish basso and Martti Talvela fan so thank you for posting this wonderful performance. Kilpinen's songs don't fit for every voice but this is one of my favorites...
I love him. I saw him often in Berlin and once in Washington, D.C. Volume and character combined with a great range. Truly awesome.

About 25 years ago I performed with Martti Talvela at the Met as his son in Boris Godunov.
He was a great man!
Nice tribute here.

Talvela was magnificent. Probably my favorite basso. The emotional power of this piece is astounding.

There is a video available Die Entführung aus dem Serail with Martti Talvela. Also with Karl Böhm and Edita Gruberova... :)

Beautiful. I love this "black" type of bass.
Is there a Götterdämmerung recording available with him?
