Joni wrote and sang an amazing number of gems. IMHO, this one shines at the top of her mountain of work. Perfect combination of words, vocal and piano. A complete and moving statement of her approach to her art - and Ludwig's, too.
This is so beautiful, if only could have written one song that even touches this, if only could have had the support and encouragement to do so, if only I was ever in love deeply, if only that love had been returned, if only we hadn't grown up so much, if only.........before I die........I will keep trying.
Thanks so much for a great video. It makes me happy that there are others who love this song and Joni as much as I do. "Song For Sharon" is another of my favorites.
Joni has written so much great poetry and music over the decades - can it possibly be decades? This one has always hit me right in the heart, soul and mind. It really sounded incredible played over my old Nova's stereo on the cannibis ride back to Ft. Lewis from a C,S,N & Y concert - 1974 in Seattle.
Go wiki and read a short bio of Ludwig van Beethoven - hint: it is said that as he lay on his deathbed his last earthly act was to "shake his fist at lightning" - enjoy.
I heard this song as a young guy on a day like this - cool & crisp - almost forty years ago - I loved the song then and I love it know with whatever better understanding & passion that time has granted me.
I once had a 3 second opportunity to tell Ms. Mitchell that this was my favorite of hers - it was so crowded & loud that I couldn't really hear her answer. \
I'm not sure any treatment of this sort can do this song justice, but this is a credible and valiant attempt.
Neat story. It's hard to think of Joni having performed that forty years ago. I am still not certain what this song meant for her. It has great meaning to me just because it was created as such.
This song lifted me up the first time I heard it in early 1971 and it never let me (back) down. Joni is one of the voices of my generation which will be heard until the end of time.
As beautiful as I will always hold this song as being, and as touched by this treatment is, sometimes I think that the louder you yell about one's tiring of the silent night, the more silent it becomes.
Perhaps her best and that's speaking volumes.

This is when Joni was experimenting with
orchestral works, and would soon lead her to
"Court and Spark" one of the most perfect pop
albums ever made.
This song is so emotional ,and Joni's
delivery just conveys that feeling. Perfection.

For The Roses is one of my top fave Joni albums.
Never thought I could enjoy such a piano-oriented
release til I heard this one.
