  • its about the 2nd world war and the young soldiers who fought in it , and the atrocities they went through ...

  • this track is so melodic i get lost in it .... Joy Division go much deeper than just music, they reach the core of our essence and bring out the souls in us ....

  • I don't care that I have nowhere to go on a Friday night, because I have this music.

  • ... just sleep and die, ...

  • i just wish i could get all the people together in a room who really know what it means to feel this track... it rips me apart every time but if affects me today as it did when i first heard it .. fucking priceless

  • i watched him sing this so many times and it still makes my blood run cold...why? It is beautifully haunting and it makes me want to live more, to die, to tell the world that it was written and to keep it my secret... truely a masterpiece! Thecuregalore94 I'm with you

  • .....it kinda reminds me of The Gremlins song lol

  • have an elements of peace

  • Such a shame that there's so few views for this song. Quite possibly the best piece of music ever written, but oh well - let's keep it our little secret.

  • as dark as my soul

  • thank you *bows down*

  • Ian Curtis, o Renato Russo inglês! Os dois tinham a mesma tristeza, só que personalidades diferentes, icones da musica universal!

  • @MsZugzug

Please, dont you ever say that agan mate!!!!!!

  • can't stop replaying. I think I could sit and stare at the sky while listening to this song, for an eternity..

  • Synth!

  • So depressing yet so brilliant.

  • so sad

  • Ian Curtis, one of the greatest songwriters. Literally. So powerful, mad respect for the dude. And of course Sumner, Hook, and Morris.

  • If i didnt know any better, id say this was The Doors.

  • lets dance to joy division, and celebrate the irony, everything is going wrong, but we're so happy :)

  • @aberzblud really?

  • @cripplas yes

  • This track is more intelligent than Top Comments suggest.

    Study Joy Division.

The musicality alone should help you decide if you qualify,

    but there is more....

  • this is life, this is death, this is all

  • omg this song is sad and powerfull at the same time.. where are you Ian! come back! :(

  • my life story. This song is like going to my own funeral and finding no one else in attendance.

  • @MrFrost227 comment so good it made me unhappy.

  • @cursedbat lol. This really is my life soundtrack. I'm pushing 40 and this song means even more now than it did when I was a kid. The best I can do most of the time is to work hard to avoid feeling sorry for myself and make the best of everything.

  • This is driving to a funeral in the pouring rain music. The second verse, when the organ/synth slows dramatically, is unbeatable.

  • @monkeys37 nailed it closed. So true I had to laugh to myself.

  • ian fucking rules

  • beautiful

  • 4:36 - 5:10 : wonderful! this band saved my life.

  • I am a believer in JOY DIVISION! Fuckin' hallelujah...

  • Weary inside, now our heart's lost forever, can't replace the fear or the thrill of the chase. These rituals showed up the door for our wanderings, opened and shut, then slammed in our face...

  • this was a young man who time after time screamed out loud for help, in his anguish and torment. What makes this so unnecessarily sad and painful is,no one was listening. My heart breaks for this now, gone young man. "Moondancer"

  • Amazing.

  • not everybody should be allowed to listen to this song... Its dangerous, it can end someones life

  • (8) Where have they been (8)

  • Thanks Ian Curtis. <3

  • closer was once my favourite album, still is one of the finest records ever to be put on vynil.most nights i would lie in my bed in the pitch black and just listen.decades was one of the songs i would be dancing to on my bed.joy division is the one and only band who could just pull you right inside ians mind and thoughts.

  • I can listen to this song constantly and always!

  • Something about this. Has a strange air that beckons the ancient. When I close my eyes, I see ancient ruins and mysterious secrets of history.

  • @slangshotstudios talk shite , jus mancunians fuckin about wiv great muscians no sublimnal messages you weirdo.

  • @boardy777777 My God, you are retard. Kill yourself, please.

  • @slangshotstudios go fuckin kill yrself you fuckin tard, Dont come on ere if u dont like it, jump and swing cunt

  • @slangshotstudios why on ere? are u a little boy? go to a mooby site and get yr ass off ere

  • @MultiJaneil I have no idea what you are saying. What baffles me even more is why such a mentally deprived idiot is listening to a Joy Division song. Kill yourself and "get yr ass off ere".

  • stil as relevant today as in its conception!!..we all have "demons" and torments!..curtis just had that connection with the others in division...they all deserve the respect that they get!!..if curtis wasnt so "troubled" then we wouldnt have the classics joy gave us all as teenagers today!!!...r.i.p. ian...and thank you all!!!...

  • @sortofsorted It reminds me what a university professor told me: "you have to suffer to create"... Closer (1980) is one of the most accomplished albums in the history of rock!

  • pure shit.

  • I bought this the week it came out all those years ago and even if i forgot it for many years its still simply purely beautiful. So little else has lasted...

  • If you listen to closer in full, by the time you get to the chorus of this song, the last track of the album, you'll have pondered suicide at least twice.

Ian Curtis, a prophet of urban decay and infinite saddness.

  • I had this on proper vinyl when it first came out, All my mates thought I was a fruit the loop, 1 of the best tracks by JD

  • sublime

  • I dont like punk, I just like Joy Division..

  • that's how an album should end

  • incredible song and extremely melancholic!

  • Where have they been?

    Where have they been?

    Where have they been?

    Where have they been?

    ..So harrowing...

  • so haunting.

  • This reminds me of the Japanese movie Grave of the Fireflies

  • @Aussie26846 YES!

  • Un titre d'anthologie melange d'ésotérisme et de "vague froide" avec un côté mélodie hivernale

  • Theatre of Tragedy has made an AMAZING cover of this song on 1998. It's quite old now, but you should check it out.

  • @queerconcordia I can attest to this cover being awesome.

  • ian, forever in my heart, for thirty years ...from 1980,the joy division accompanied me in my life .. thanks Ian!

  • JOY DIVISION ONE OF THE BEST BAND EVER!!

  • GOOD SONG

  • the only and the best WWII song ever.

and most likely, the definitely WWIII song. It will come. Sooner than you think.

  • Crushing psychological torment brought me here

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • the last time i went into joy division trip i was depressed for couple years, if you suffer from depression joy dvision must be taken in low quantities and not too often

  • @ukusapillage I agree! I always try very hard to not 'OD" on JoyDivision!!! I'm kind of indulging right now, which is most likely not good. LOL. (When did you figure this out? I figured this out almost 2 yrs ago).

  • @ukusapillage i know what you mean. to follow on from your point the song 'eternal' on this record is the ONLY song ever that i avoid because if im in a dark place it actually takes me even lower. its just TOO dark. all the others however make me feel somehow better in an indescribable way.

  • Wonderful and Mesmerizing-I LOVE Mesmerizing.

  • Closer was Ians suicide note i suppose, very very sad

  • OMG! ravishing and terrible ...

  • thank you martin hannett, for the prodution,,,R.I.P. a vision of longjevity and pure love for the song .

  • I love this song, and I find it amazing that I listen to the smiths a lot, and they don't manage to make me feel as depressed as this song does

good job joy division! beautiful work

  • The synths and vocals in this song are so delightfully hypnotizing.

  • I never knew how good closer was, I just always listened to unknown pleasures for some reason. I missed out...

  • @kaine180 I know - this album overall is more comprehensive and interesting imho.

  • fuck this is such a good song

  • @SeanIsNotReal internet memes are stupid, like you.

  • jooooooooy

  • If you have no freinds, no valentine and no onelikes you and you don't like anyone, is there any point in living ?

  • @wumpscut20 I'll give you 2 reasons. 1)Joy Division 2) patience you, will meet someone!

  • @wumpscut20 So your only purpose is existence is to gain the acceptance of others? That's a stupid aspiration.

And "no valentine"? Romance is stupid too.

  • @wumpscut20 yes. to be a thorn in everyones side. making those who have stood in your way pay...BIG TIME. when you have given up hope you have nothing to lose. and everything to gain. watch Fight Club and you will know what i mean

  • @wumpscut20 i ask that question every day, you maybe be lonly now but you want things to get better, im just waiting for things to get better

  • @wumpscut20 you are right, i wanna die to! i never had a girlfriend and dont have friends anymore. i understand your pain

  • @TheVascoPaiva You don't need to rely on GF or BF. Such nonsense!

  • @wumpscut20 for yourself

  • Amazing song , Great on awaydays!

  • perfect

  • "Here are the young men/The weight on their shoulders". These words changed my approach to lyrics forever.

  • My favourite of Joy Division..

  • I like the melody but his voice is kind of weird I think...not bad, but...why he sings like that?...like he's underground of something...?

  • @itmustbeloveee learn a little about where they came from and you'll start to see why they sound like they do.

  • @kidcodeine Well..I know that they are from Manchester...I'm not saying that they sound bad....they are great..just that his voice is a little bit wierd..but still haunting I guess...

  • All Joy Division songs remind me of Soul Reaver 1/2 soundtrack. Not that its a bad thing, but who agrees? Please no diehard Joy Division fans commenting - just people who have actaully played the game thank you.

  • I love this cover of the Lady Gaga song.

  • @Johnnytheowl I don't know whether your trying to be a smartass, or your just that fucking stupid.

  • Got to love the Mellotron at the end! Such a great, haunting sound.

  • Best album ever. This truly is a masterpiece, it delves deep into the darkest parts of human emotion, and it never really reemerges.

  • This has to be one of the finest songs ever written. Awesome in the true sense that it inspires awe. Truly beautiful.

  • I love the keyboards in this

  • Amazing...

  • I remember last winter I was walking home after a night of heavy drinking. It was an unusually scenic night; the moon was big in the sky, mist hung low in the air, and I had Closer on the iPod. The walk's usually an hour, 45 minutes if you cane it, which I was because it was cold. The last part is a punishing uphill section, but for some reason I wanted to arrive home as the album ended, so I broke into a run around 4:35, as the keyboard comes in.

I was glad that I spent my taxi money on booze.

  • Good song, indeed.

    :}

  • Irresistible!!!!!!

  • Hands down the happiest song ever written.

  • The Killer should give back Ian´s tombstone.

  • @llewesa100 blah blah. your opinion doesn't change the effect the band had on a generation, and what it continues to inspire in people. troll senses are tingling.

  • @llewesa100 find a copy of "peel sessions, transmission" by joy division. play it a few times then re assess your opinion. but hey if this song doesn't touch your soul then maybe you have lost it. no animosity intended

  • Nice music..

  • fuck sake. i am crying right now

  • Comment removed

  • I'm feeling closer and closer

  • The last lyrics are "Where have they been?" repeated for times. I think it would've been more powerful if Ian sang:

    "Where have they been?

    Where have they been?

    Where are they now?

    And where are they going?"

Still, I'm not attacking the man. He was one of the greatest musicians who ever lived. He sang from the heart and soul. RIP

  • @NintendoSegaSonyGuy sounds a lil corny xDD no offense but I prefer the song the way it is :)

  • @KxK96

Eh, I don't care. Ian was a genius for doing it his own way anyway. :D

  • hehe 30 people tried to push the like button while they dancing the epilipsy dance :p

  • dangerously haunting . this is as good as it gets for anyone with a brain about music

  • cant replace the fear for the thrill of the chase

  • Anyone who doesn't get a lump in their throat and a tear in their eye when those keyboards start up has a heart of stone

  • Quite simply the finest song ever written. So tragically beautiful, heartfelt and mesmerising.

  • this is just as depressing as listening to Portraits Of Past lol

  • awesome track

  • Cry like a child, though these years make me older,

With children my time is so wastefully spent,

A burden to keep, though their inner communion,

Accept like a curse an unlucky deal.

Played by the gate at the foot of the garden,

My view stretches out from the fence to the wall,

No words could explain, no actions determine,

Just watching the trees and the leaves as they fall.

  • Joy Division - The Eternal

Procession moves on, the shouting is over,

Praise to the glory of loved ones now gone.

Talking aloud as they sit round their tables,

Scattering flowers washed down by the rain.

Stood by the gate at the foot of the garden,

Watching them pass like clouds in the sky,

Try to cry out in the heat of the moment,

Possessed by a fury that burns from inside.

  • 31 years today, ian you are missed

  • joy division= 2001 a space oddessy of music.

  • I'll never forget the night I heard this song in a haunted house with several loose friends and lots of drugs .

  • Joy Division = greatest band of all time

  • This song gets me depressed...

  • Favorite song from one of my all-time favorite records. I want this to be played at my funeral.

  • @failureavatar You should listen to Eternal then

  • One of the great bands of post-punk era. Maybe the greatest. Curtis's vocals are other-worldly, timeless almost, so weather-beaten sounds like an old soldier recalling sorrows.

  • Perfection in music.

  • such a haunting melody... a classic

  • Great group. when they went on to form New Order they had become the most sampled Progressive rock band ever.

  • the best cover of album in the history of music! no doubt about it! and for me one the 10 albums in the history of music!

  • I remember hearing JD practising this behind Broughton Baths,my bro had a fledgling band with Larry Cassidy, playing Lou Reed covers at the time, practiced at the same venue,I think anyway.

I had my hair cut at Sid n Harrys in Higher Broughton, next to Bernard, was too shy to tell him how much I loved the bands music,I was about 12,lol.

Still love these guys to this day, seen them countless times at the Hac,never bothered going up to them, that was naff.Val says hello Bern, she cared for your Mam.xx

  • The whole album is fantastic...

  • 26 dislikes, what's the fuck????!!!!

  • I like the album closer is very cold.

  • @Vampira69Varney

I like you is very true speak my good friend.

  • This song makes me think about all the wasted decades of the human race...

  • i want to buy some Joy Division records

  • The final song on an amazing final album

  • @zilchnilton

If you value "holding notes" so much then please get off and listen to your ciline dion stuff...

  • ‎30 days of music -- Day 04 -- A song that makes you sad

  • ‎30 days of music -- Day 04 -- A song that makes you sad

  • the decadences and harshness made in a way of song. Awesome. Wonderful. The best band of the last 35 years in Uk besides Paul weller and the cure maybe...

  • Usually i hate everything, but this song is just the best i have ever heard.

  • iamobel, you dont know what your talking about,i suggest you keep opinions like that to yourself.blasphemus.ian is joy division, bernard singinging would be new order.not in the same league.ian is british musics greatest loss.

  • I am crying. The lyrics are so frighteningly true. I've never felt this way about a song before. I had permanent goosebumps throughout the entire song. So hauntingly beautiful.
