The "dine-and-dash" is an act of criminal theft by fraud. If the service is so egregiously awful, then walk back into the kitchen, hand the manager or expediter a low-ball estimate of the cost of the meal (sans tip), and then leave. There is no excuse for theft, ever.

What's even more horrible is that many if not most restaurant managers stick their sub-minimum wage waitstaff with the bill for these crooks. This is also illegal, but is rarely if ever even contested, much less prosecuted.

I babysat once for a couple whose server went on break with their bill for over an HOUR and they had to get the manager to get their bill so that they could pay and leave. They had just gone to the restaurant to get a dessert! I stayed at their house until midnight because of this. Plus, the dessert was a TO-GO order. That was ridiculous.
