  • its not fair to compare the poor master system with the nes.. the nes vs the genesis is a more fair battle.

  • I vote for the NES mainly because of the last 2 games for each system that you featured! Over the years, The Legend of Zelda has had far more success than any other series of games for any video game system. I am pretty sure the Zelda series is responisble for well over 50% of Nintendo's success over the years. Nintendo has the original Legend of Zelda game to thank for that.

  • @SteveWilkosJR Who cares about front load shit. NES (in fact Famicom, not NES) became most cloned console in the world. Were there any Segas with keyboard and BASIC carts? (NS-HUBASIC, G-BASIC), as well as music editing (simple tracker) software and even Epson LPT interface? I barely think so. Lots of things made for Famicom (and its later clones) were never released for NES.

Maybe SMS had more powerful hardware. No doubt. But Famicom became most advanced console of its time. No doubt as well.

  • Both are good.

  • SEGA MASTER SYSTEM > NES

  • Comment removed

  • You see... one minor issue.

Are there any brand new Sega Master System consoles (or their hardware clones) and games on sale now? No.

Are there any brand new Famicom/NES consoles (or their hardware clones) and games on sale now? Yes.Clones.

NES/Famicom platform was hugely pirate-supported in 1990-s. That's why this platform is _still_ alive. You can easily buy a new Famicom-compatible console and games for it. To find a new SMS is practically impossible. So... NES wins, thanks to pirates.

  • NES wins

  • Why are the top comments so long?

  • Yes, I think that the Master System had better graphics, but the NES had the more quality games. I do think that the Genesis destroyed the SNES as far as games though.

  • nintendo NES is the best! in it's time...

  • I really don't think this comparison is quite fair, you put some of nintendos crap games and all of segas good games. I could acturally tell by watching it that you liked sega better, what about battletoads and nintendo world cup and some of nintendos newer games. extremely biased

  • I really don't think this comparison is quite fair, you put some of nintendos crap games and all of segas good games. I could acturally tell by watching it that you liked sega better, what about battletoads and nintendo world cup and some of nintendos newer games. extremely biased

  • Sega Master System Vs Nintendo Nintendo Entertainment System?

  • por favor , que ignorante eres jonnyvilla , no me compares NES con ESO

  • Master System is shit for little children.

  • pretty bad comparison. You should have included games that were on both systems & based it on that. Nintendo had the commercial support of 3rd party companies But SMS had the superior hardware. It was just under utilized.

  • sega games are stupid.they look pretty good but sounds are embarassing.nintendo has huge good game library

  • @kalijakolomonen What do you mean "sounds are embarassing"? Sega games are not stupid. There's Shining series, Phantasy Star series, Sonic series, Shenmue series, Jet Grind Radio, Ristar, Ecco, etc.

  • Is Alex Kid's jump sound effect the same as Sonic's?

  • @jerman2003 haha it is! I didn't realize that. Although I did know Alex Kidd was SEGA's first mascot before Sonic.

  • This comparison isn't very useful as it's not comparing cross-platform games that appeared on both systems. If that's the case, you should have shown a comparison between the original Phantasy Star and Final Fantasy to show the SMS' tech superiority.

Hardware wise, the SMS was superior to the NES: capable of more colours, more channels of sound and was cheaper to buy.

Nintendo won that round because it locked a LOT of the major 3rd party game developers/publishers into exclusivity contracts.

  • It seem's the music is more pleasent on nes then sega master system's.

  • A lot of people on here are saying that the NES had the games and the SMS had graphics. They both had their moments in both to be honest. The SMS had some fantastic titles I still play today and if you ask me, the sprites in Megaman 2 looks as good as anything on SMS. The library on the NES was huge with some sweet titles, but as the AVGN is observes, quite a lot of them shouldn't have been released.

  • sayastra tengen released shinobi on nes and it was on the master system but its an unlicensed game so its quite rare

  • i was going to either like or dislike this but i guess i think it's neutral so i am not giving it anything

  • Mario: The original tea bagger.

  • I prefered SMS over NES. It actually outsold NES over here in he UK. Seeing as it was cheeper and had better visuals.

  • The SMS was a FAR superior machine to the NES, at least in terms of visuals and audio. The NES won the war simply because htey had all the top 3rd party developers locked to exclusive contracts. Otherwise, the SMS would've easily slaughtered the NES. Just imagine how kick ass the mega man or Contra series would've looked on the SMS. Just compare games like Shinobi, Ninja Gaiden, and Afterburner ont he two consoles, and you'll see that it's not even close which console was better.

  • You are pretty horrifically terrible at playing games. People who can barely hold the controller properly don't get an opinion.

  • The SMS is graficly supirior but the NES has better games.

  • SMS was more powerful and had more colors than the NES. Nintendo kicked Sega's ass with their game library. I lived through this era and I can tell you Sega had nothing on Nintendo. I had a SMS in my room and my brother had the NES in his room. The SMS was the red headed step child. I only played it when I couldn't play the NES. Even then, it sucked. I hated the sound and music so bad that me and my brother often laughed while playing it because it sucked so bad.

  • I'm from England and grew up on the SMS and loved every minute of it and always as a kid compared it to the NES on graphics, sound, everything, I was certain the SMS was better in every aspect. I'm now alot older have a solid collection for both consoles and I can honestly say in terms of graphics, its the SMS hands down but when it comes to the most importaing thing,GAMEPLAY the NES edges it ! SMS games do look much better but you have more Fun with the NES + it has much more games...

  • WHY DIDNT THEY SHOW RAMBO?!

Sega was better...they just fucked up by making stupid games for the consoles...the dreamcast was bad ass when it came out. All but like 5 games sucked!

  • Sorry sega, I love you, but I'd rather have an NES any day.

  • SMS came out after NES. That and that game looked like a rip off of Mario (probably why they showed it). Sega died for a reason.

  • Is this me or does Mario look like he's doing a shit when he crouches on a pipe

  • SMS was a better system than NES but no SMS platform game can compare to NES Super Mario Bros.

  • MASTER SYSTEM>>>nintendo entertainment system

Its called MASTERsystem for some reason.. ;D

  • NES was way better, although I will admit the last three games of SEGA was good. Shinobi, Sonic and Phantasy Star. The rest however looked bad. Also there were much better games on the NES than just the ones you showed.

  • I wasn't born during the 8-bit craze, but from what I've played of it, here in Europe, the SMS mopped the floor with the NES. As much as I prefer the SNES over the Mega Drive, sorry Nintendrones, the only killer apps the NES had going for it was Mario 1 -3 (and even then, I'd take the All-Stars remakes over them any day of the week.)

  • I like the Nes, but I like the SMS better because in America we didn't get to many good games. Most of the best games are European games like Ninja Gaiden for SMS. Good thing the SMS doesn't have a region lockout.

  • i love both. i never say one console is better than anthor because ever one has diffent taste.

except the virtual boy we all know tha loses badly

  • nes, no contest

  • master system is major what the Nes

Master system is with good graphics and Good sound driver.

who the bad vents a the sega master system >:(

  • I distinctly remeber asking some of my primary school teachers if they had a game console...

Everyone of them had either a master system, megadrive / megacd, one guy had a saturn (this around 1996).

I asked one of them if they had a super nintendo. He said "no, but my son has one".

    I lolled.

  • NES won in the US but in Europe SMS did just as well, possibly better and in Brazil they still sell Master System stuff. The master system 3 was released in 2009 over there which had loads of games built in. NES only won in the US and obviously in Japan.

  • Master system was amazing but i can't choose a favorite.

  • The SEGA Master System vs NES just went to show that the best technology didn't mean anything. I mean you still see stuff like that today with the PS3 and 360, both are high-tech, but the Wii outsells them both. Gameplay is important, lol. Oh, and SEGA ruined themselves, and eventually, Nintendo had SEGA games, and SEGA didn't have a system. So, who's the real winner here?

  • @XfullmetalRocker

Well I don't think anyone wins. The fact SEGA are fine with Nintendo having their software, even when Dreamcast was still active, says a lot about the company.

It is sad what happened to SEGA.

They put a lot of resources into technology and innovation, only to stop supporting their very efforts, and move to the next thing too quickly.

That caused a loss of trust.

Today; I respect Nintendo for being creative, and being 10 steps ahead.

    They understand the market.

  • @ExtremeBogom I know, SEGA had great innovation, and it was the future, but they ruined themselves with too many systems. I mean, the Dreamcast, the last SEGA console was ahead of its time. I love both SEGA systems and Nintendo systems, but I keep getting mad that one of SEGA's mascots hasn't been doing good on Nintendo consoles... and that mascot is Sonic. Hopefully Sonic 4 will be good though. I just wonder what would happen if SEGA all of a sudden came out with a new system...

  • @XfullmetalRocker

I don't they'll re-enter to be honest. Not unless Nintendo leave lol.

  • @ExtremeBogom I don't think so either, I just wonder what would happen if they did though.

  • @XfullmetalRocker I doubt they are ever going to make another console. Nintendo, sony, and microsoft have complete control of the console market, and if they did release a new console it probably would not be able to compete. Especially with the failure of their last two consoles, consumers would have little faith that it wouldn't happen again. I'm a Sega fan though, having owned all their consoles except masters system, I'd love to see another console. They always had the best games.

  • @moreoreos123 well, SEGA, Nintendo, and Sony took the market, and then Xbox took SEGA's place, so why couldn't SEGA do the same?

  • @XfullmetalRocker Because their reputation has been tarnished by the failure of two systems in a row.Not only that, but I'm sure they lost a lot of money on the saturn and dreamcast, and they probably don't want to take the risk of releasing another console, especially when competition is so stiff. I'm not saying it's impossible, just that it's highly unlikely. They probably are going to stick with just making games.

  • @XfullmetalRocker Meh, the ethos behind the Wii outselling the PS3 and 360 is null and void imo, most of it's install base are witless socialists, and I bet the amount of it who have actually utilised Gamecube backwards compatibility is depressing. Don't get me wrong, the Wii has some great core titles coming it's way and I'll be getting one come Christmas, but I doubt there's many other people out there with the same incentives as me.

  • The thing that killed the SMS was it's small library of games vs. Nintendo's huge library of games. This was mostly due to Nintendo not allowing their 3rd party developers to make games for anyone else but them, which was later deemed illegal. If it was made illegal sooner, rather than later, things would've probably been different =D

  • In my opinion the master system is more graphically advanced, but the nes has a much larger and better library. So I say the nes wins.

  • Master System was superior, but NES won.

  • SMS >>>>> NES

  • Phantasy Star completely and absolutely pwnz Final Fantasy, Dragon Warrior or ANY NES RPG.

The original Metroid was totally badass though..

  • The SMS is slightly disadvantaged in this comparison. The music played here is not doing justice to the originals. The emulator used is playing its music at a much slower pace.

  • sorry , guys but history was made and it cant be changed , nintendo won , not only that nintendo first party games , killed segas first party games , you cant beat zelda , or kirby , or mario , or metroid ect. its just to much...so dont keep complaining or fighting history was made and nintendo owned 89% of the market , sega only 11% , and it was so unpopular alot of people today in day dont even know about the master sysytem...

  • nice video. to think the sms CPU was almost 3 times faster then the NES. I wonder what games could have came out if not for nintendo's contracts with developers.

  • i think you should have tried to do games released on both systems- on that note, i think this face off is unfair.... nintendo had companies sign contracts saying IE if mega man 2 is on the Nintendo 8-bit, you can NOT release this game on any other system..... so really it wasn't NES vs. Sega it's Sega vs nes, capcom, konami, sunsoft, etc .some of them did both anyway, taito, and hudson (hudson by creating clones of their own games)

  • Derf, I knew you thought sms was better just by watching this video. Just by your game selection, and the way you showed 2 seconds of Nes games, and 20 mins of shinobi rofl. Sms had some nice games that I liked, like altered beast etc. But overall, nintendo had the better, more memorable games.

  • NES hands down. Sega master system had some games, but there is no fucking way it was better when NES has so many memorable titles. The games were just generally better and better well done in my opinion. I think the sega fans say it was better based more on emotion and childhood, than reality to be honest.

  • @Guinea54 SMS still had the better first party games hands down. Shinobi is a perfect side scroller and Alex Kidd was amazing. Not to mention all of the really well done arcade ports the SMS had for the time.

  • @beanwithbacon I don't really agree. Contra, mario bros 1 &3, all the castlevanias, They were better games to me.

  • it is not the NINTENDO NES its the nes cause the n stands for NINTENDO

  • SUPER RUSH HOUR BROTHERS

  • The Sega Dreamcast made way for Xbox and playstation, hell if sega dreamcast was a success there would be no playstation. Xbox may still be there though, however we will never no. it could have been sega and nintendo still. better or worse i will always love them both because i enjoyed finishing games on both consoles. call me a gamer. but i have been playing since 1987 and all consoles.

  • I say the NES was the overall winner

While it lost out on certain aspects to the SMS, the NES ultimately had more going for it!! Most of all it had over twice the game library (not including the unofficial games)

While the graphics were technically better on the SMS, the NES's graphics were generally easier on the eye; it made good use of innocuous black backgrounds, whereas the SMS often had bright backgrounds which were more distracting when playing

    2 excellent systems overall!!!

  • Lol the Nintendo Nintendo Entertainment System

  • I always hated the color palette of the SMS. All the games for it were always so supper garish with headache inducing clashing colors. While Alex Kid may be technically superior to SMB, it still manages to look uglier and less charming,

I dunno, maybe it was cool at the time cuz of the extra hardware power, but it sure hasn't aged well. Wonder how modern games with their overused bump-mapping and bloom effects will look in 20 years :)

    Ugh.. bloom...

  • SEGA MASTER SYSTEM WAS FAR MORE BETTER THAN THE NES

    SEGA I SO UNDERESTIMATED

  • NES wins

  • Phantasy star kicked any nitendo rpg's ass.

  • @hitman23333 I can understand your nostalgia making you bias but as good (and it was really good for its time) as Phantasy Star was it wasn't better than Final Fantasy for the NES.

  • Another advantage for the SMS, u usually got your moneys worth for the games. The truth is the NES had a huge percentage of extremely shitty games. Watching some reviews by the AVGN and the Irate Gamer the other day on NES games, and I couldnt believe that video game developers would release the kind of garbage like the shit they had out for nintendo. In numbers, true, the NES had far more titles out than the the SMS, but just because it had a huge amount of inferior quality games to its roster.

  • People who say the NES games were more memorable only say that because of the nostalgia factor, as those were the games they played as kids. Well, I have the nostalgia factor on the SMS side, as it was the system I owned, and I tell u, games like Alex Kidd, Shinobi, Black Belt, Castle of Illusion owe nothing to Mario, Mega Man or any other NES franchise. SMS was superior in every aspect, and the games are pretty memorable for those who played them.

  • @ramvasc7 From the point of view of someone who's owned both systems I can honestly say that the NES had far more great games that are now classics. It's only logical that a system that has more games will have more crap but thats not to say that the SMS didn't have its share of crap games. Considering the lack of third party support that Sega had they made some really good games.

  • Master System had better graphics and sound than the NES, but when it comes to games, it's really hard to say which one is better.

  • the SMS was the far superious console in terms of visuals and audio. The only reason why Nintendo ended up winning in the 8-bit era was because the tied down all the major 3rd party developers to exclusive contracts. This is why popular game franchises like Mega Man, Contra, and Castlevania only appeared on the NES. One can just imagine how sick those games would've looked on the SMS...

  • Wow I never realized how the graphics were much richer on the SMS. Damn had nintendo not screwed over the developers with their legal bull nintendo would have been history.

  • I had a Sega Master System 2, It was a much better console than the original release with all the silly excesses of the original model gone and Alex Kidd Miracle World as the built in game instead of crappy Hang On.

But I recon anyone that had Shinobi didn't miss the NES one bit... Shinobi was the real killer app of the SMS.

also why put double dragon 2 VS dinamite dux when friggen double Dragon 1 was on both systems?

  • SMS

  • I think win

  • NES forever.

  • hol on i thought sonic chaos was on game gear

  • they both had amazing iconic and exclusive games, compare these two systems by the games they both had, in that case sms clearly wins. look at double dragon.

  • nes all the way it way better the sms i played it for 15 min and got bored nes has grate games like ice climers kid icarus and contra and many more i played fo 40 min and i was still haveing fun

  • Mastsr System is the only console I regret selling.

  • Must have been the european versions. The speeds are different

  • I prefer Mario to Alex, but a[part from that, I'm a SMS fanboy all the way.

  • nes is beter than sega genesis and sega master system

  • Well, the Master System had better graphics and hardware, but the NES had a better library of games...then the Genesis/Mega Drive came out, and of course, the rest is history :p

  • sms is the best system, it has, mortal kombat 1&2, sonic 1,2, chaos, michael jackson's moonwalker, robocop vs terminator, phantasy star 1&2, alex kidd in miracle world.

  • i think sega master system would have won just look at super mario brothers. then look at alex kidd in meracole world dont you see the diffrence?

  • @jeffkpm

There is definitely a difference in graphics. But, I think there is also a big difference when it comes to gameplay as well. I guess the real question is, which did you have more fun playing?

  • the only thing i noticed was that the sms has richer colors.

  • 6:54 i hated that special stage on Shinobi just for that bit i used to wet my pants when the ninja jumped at me it seemed realiistic in those days when i was about 5 or 6

  • Sega Master System is so much better in the graphical department- but that is all it has going for it. It only has a few sleeper hits, such as "Alex Kidd" and the WonderBoy video games. The NES has dozens- Megaman, Mario, Donkey Kong, Adventure Island, Castlevania, Zelda, and also many shooters like Contra and Gradius.

  • @MrRetroGamer96 such a biased view, you half heartedly say 2 sega games, then list a bunch of nes games, you didnt even mention sonic for sms!!!!

I will do the same- *ahem* Nes only had mario and donkey kong. The sms has dozens- Sonic, Alex Kidd, Wonderboy, Golvellius, Phantasy Star, Golden Axe, and also many aerial shooters like R-Type and Afterburner.

Both consoles had GREAT games but you're not giving the SMS the credit it deserves, my friend.

  • I am not a Sega hater or biased- I've played both systems. And Sonic was more known for the Genesis anyways but of course I did forget to mention that one. The Sega Master System was in some aspects much better than what was out in the market at the time, considering it had near arcade graphics but I just meant to say the game library for the console just wasn't as impressive as some others.

  • why is the sms music so slow and the nes is fast?

  • Master System FTW!

  • I personally think the SMS music is better by comparison

  • @ldlrdrllrr Bridge Zone ftw

  • The nes had the games and support, but so would sega if they had the same contract nintendo had with their software makers.

You make games for us and no one else,no wonder there was a lack of support for the sms !

  • Are the NES games in pal format? I have a famiclone and the games for it are much faster, and i live in europe, not in the usa. Maybe i got an NTSC machine, becuse i can only set that thing only on my tv, all the others just cant get the signal right, not even my tv-tuner card.

  • The SMS had much better graphics, but its sound chip was garbage, if they put the FM chip in all machines, that whould be great. But without it, the NES has much better audio quality.

  • @CleetusSilversurfer i think the sound was fairly equal at this stage in the game (no pun)

  • @sayastra

The SMS has the same sound chip like in the Colecovision. And if i'm correct it only has 4 squarewave channel and a white noise channel, the NES has square, triangle, sine, noise and a pcm channel. I think thats why the nes sounds better, but the music depends also on the programmer who writes music for the console.

  • i didn't notice anything all that much at this point- now on the 16 bit however......yeah.........

  • SMS wins in the graphics and sound department, but more iconic games came out for the NES. To this day I'm still blown away by how great Phantasy Star is.

  • Master System the best!

  • the master system has better graphics and even better sound thanks the extra 6 channel soundchip(japanese model),has rgb output a card input, runs twice faster, and has no loadproblems, like the bulky nes it,s design flaw.

but ,m a nes fan. and the nes had better games and gameplay.

  • @johneymute I remember going over a friends house that had a Sega Master System and he had no problems loading games.

NES sucked had so many problems load games. Great games but the system was buggy as hell.

  • SMS have better graphics, but for me, the NES gave me more fun when I was a kid.

  • I think Sega Master System has better graphics then the Nes. However, it seems to me the general control and feel of Nes games are superior to that of most SMS games. I can't say I favor one over the other, however it's more then obvious that Nintendo went on to be significantly more successful.

  • I like both systems, but since I grew up with NES, NES for the win.

  • SMS has graphics far superior...

NES has better control (One button more) and better sound...

Compare the Simpsons games in NES and SMS (Bart vs, the Sace Mutants and Bart vs. the World)... Those games show the high and low points about every console...

  • Sega Master System is the king of its era. What makes NES a rival for SMS is the Mario game thats all ...

  • NES why cause i all i see From SEGA is Graphics, Nintendo on the other hand got Gameplay, innovative concept, art and great 8-bit music with their Games.

  • cmon master system have had better 8 bit graphics...

    Nes is soo ugh! :P

  • ....up

    Master system

  • NES the best!

  • I have had both systems since I was 8 20 yrs ago and even back then I could say: Sega Master System all the way. But why's yours so slow? My master system still works and my Alex Kidd and Shinobi sound way faster, whereas yours lag.

  • here in Brazil, Master System was a success. SMS wins.

  • @dirkgiggler10 It was also a major sucess in Australia too.

  • @dirkgiggler10 here in argentina sms was a failure

    NES was a success

    NES wins

  • master system win hands down

  • (Continued from the last post.) As far as as Sonic Chaos goes, it would be a much more fair comparison to Super Mario Brothers, though both have their own fun. For your information, I was unaware that there was even a Sega Master System port of the game until you made me aware of it, but then again, it looks just like the Game Gear, PS2, XBox, GameCube, Wii, PS3, and XBox 360 ports of the game. As for Shinobi, did you know that Tengen, a divison of Atari, had made an NES port of Shinobi, too?

  • (Continued from the last post.) As for as Dynamite Dux and Double Dragon II: The Revenge (NES version), Dynamite Dux was more or less a shooter than a brawler and its framerate was a bit choppy (which is also possibly due to it being played on a PAL system as opposed to an NTSC or Japanese system). Also, again for Shinobi, but it has no equal and the only serious rivals to Castlevania would be something like, say the Metroid games or the PC (and now Nintendo DS) game called Cave Story.

  • (Continued from the last post.) Of course, were the framerate not so poor, the controls not so stiff, and the enemies being one hit wonders, I would have gladly voted for Dynamite Dux, but then again, games like Grand Theft Auto built on what games like the both of them started. Also, both Metroid and Castlevania began on the NES/Famicom, too. As for Teddy Boy, and Donkey Kong, that, too, is like comparing apples and oranges. Teddy Boy is more like Phantasy Zone if anything, jonnyvilla.

  • Teddy Boy is like Fantasy Zone? Are you daft?

  • (continued from the last post.) Now as I was saying before, I do believe that there were some terrible injustices, such as Alex Kidd being overlooked as a truly good video game title and that Turrican was never ported to the USA on the NES (which is what Alex Kidd SHOULD be compared to instead), but Super Mario Brothers made it possible for not only Nintendo but fo ALL video game companies to survive and, like it or not, you HAVE to give the game its due, just like Bo Diddley to rock music.

  • for^

  • I think that your fanwhoredom has blinded you to judging games as great on an individual basis. I also believe that your comparisons of some games are really unfair. Take Phantasy Star, for example. Yes, The Legend of Zelda is by far the flagship NES RPG (and anyone that says that it is not an RPG is going to get a mudhole stomping coutesty of yours truly), but a more fair comparison would have to be Dargon Warrior/Dragon Quest and Phantasy Star. I will say more in another post for you.

  • I seriously think that if Sonic had been released earlier (i.e on the Master System's launch) that the SMS would not have failed.

  • Thing is i own both and prefer the NES but, the master system was more reliable and advanced. its a bit like saturn and ps1, the more advanced one loses

  • its obvious which is better, the NES. the master system was barly around and couldn't even last past 1990 cus it sucked so bad. unlike the NES that still continued to make games up to 1995. MS had no classics anyone likes/remembers, rip off, virtually no decent games. the NES defines classic gaming and without nintendo making the NES and bringing gaming back to the 80s after atari, sega would even be around and also sega sold the MS to Tonka, the toy company since they did so bad

  • Haha...you're so funny, no classics! That's where you NES fan boys missed out. While you were playing all your great NES games in different shades of four colors the rest of the world, that wasn't being owned by Nintendo's monopoly tactics, were enjoying colorfull, well done "classic" Sega arcade conversions like Shinobi, Outrun, Space Harrier, Wonderboy etc..

  • outrun was such a piece of crap compared to rad racer for the NES, all those other games i barly remember due to the fact they were decent at best. of course the MS had a bit better graphics due to the fact it was slightly newer, but WAY WORSE audio due to the fact it and the genesis uses an FM Synthesiser, while the NES had 5 sound channels. every classic gamer knows graphics dont make the game and i haven't met a single person that once owned or currently own a MS

  • also nintendo sold a total of 61 million NES systems, while the MS sold 13 million.the games anyone you ask remembers games on the NES, much less people even know what the master system even is. the MS couldn't last more than 4 years before selling their console to Tonka

  • Mate, you've done the Tonka line already and it's still an irrelevant point. As for you not knowing any people with the MS... Well, all I can say is that in England only the poor "trampy" kids, the type that had alcoholic dads, had the NES. That may sound amusing but it's actually true in my experience...the hardware was from 1983! Apart from the Mario games, which even MS owners wanted, it was just known as the poor man's alternative.

  • the MS was a total obvious ripoff of the NES, similar controllers, copied the NES Zapper gun, just 2 years after the NES's release, sega had the time to try to compete with the NES and rip off everything and the only thing sega did slightly better was graphics. in fact my friend got donated a working MS and didn't want it anymore, he tried trading it for just an NES game, and the sellers knew sega is such a piece of crap he didn't want it

  • You keep repeating the same old crap. If you think I'm some noob who's going to get all frustrated by you calling Sega crap then you've got the wrong guy. I'm not a blind fan boy like you. I buy whatever console is best and don't care about the brand. i loved my MS but also loved the SNES. I dislike the NES because it sucked ass not because it's Nintendo.

How old are you? you're not another brat kid jumping on the retro bandwagon are you? I take it you had a NES when they were new??

  • no my first console was the SNES. you haven't really anything either, the only thing you came up with was it had higher graphics, but the MS had something that nintendo didn't: Originality and Fun. those are the reasons why nobody gives a shit about the MS. like everyone, if you people what defines classic 8bit gaming, they'd say NES of course. the genesis was a good console, and thats why sega released a 16 bit console early because the MS was failing so bad, sega would be hated on even more

  • Well at least you're not from the XBOX generation. I suppose i shouldn't have said you where talking crap either. I guess we are both too set in our ways to change our minds now anyway.

  • ya sorry lets stop fighting. and yes i cant stand people that think classic gaming sucks and they only think all the new gen stuff is the only good stuff

  • i like both... why cant more people just hate the xbox 360....

  • hey i dont like the 360 either

  • good, its the only system that needs hating on big time, the master system may have sucked but it didnt fail out of the box, and overheat

  • ...and I also can not stand the people that say that only the classic systems were good and that the newer systems suck, too, BZF. Let us be honest here and just say that there were some truly good games on all systems, some really overhyped ones that are not as good as we think that they were or are, and some of them that just were just plain duds period. By the way, I am almost 30 and I have played video game systems as far back as the Atari 2600 and as new as the PS3, Wii, and XBox 360.

  • yes thank you

  • In Japan, the Famicom and the Master System were released on the same day.

The Master System had better graphics, more tiles and a better sound chip.

  • the master system did, but what it didn't have was fun and originality that nintendo had with the NES and original games that are very entertaining and that everyone remembers

  • @BZF Well, I know quite a lot of fun and original games, and some great arcade ports, too. But I can't really compare it to the NES because I don't own a NES and I don't know much about its games (besides of Mario and Zelda, of course). I just know that Nintendo used some ugly methods to force the publishers to only publish on the NES...

So that's a reason why there are many more games on the NES and because of that more fun ones. But I'm glad to have an SMS :)

  • @BZF What about games like Hang On, Safari Hunt, Alex Kidd and Snail Maze (the latter built into the Master System's BIOS - accessible by holding Up on the Control Pad and pressing Buttons 1 and 2 at the same time while the system is turned on without a cartridge inserted)?

  • @SPeacock

SMS 2 kicked the original's built in ass.... ALEX KIDD MIRACLE WORLD BUILT IN!!

and no holding up shit to access it either.

  • @colliric "Holding up shit"? How do you mean?

  • @SPeacock

Alex Kidd started automatically when no cartridge was in the slot on SMS2 unlike SMS1's built in games where you had to hold down the up button.

  • @colliric Oh, right. The later SMS 1 models had a built-in menu where you could choose to play either Hang On or Safari Hunt (The former by using the control pad, the latter by pointing the Light Phaser at the screen and pulling the trigger). :)

  • The master system (or Mark 3) came almost 2 years later then the Famicom

  • @BZF You have to remember that SMS had games built in. Safari hunt and Hang on sucked monkey cock though. The sound quality was better, the controls were a lot softer, don't forget Phantasy Star either.

  • @holycrapitstowlie that is true the sound quality was better and the graphics were slightly better but like I tell everyone, both of those don't make the game, it's gameplay that makes it. the games on the SMS were no where near as memorable as the NES along with it's music too. i mean when ppl think of 8-bit gaming, they think of NES, not SMS

  • I remember when I was a kid playing super mario, and in one part I was like

    "OMG THE NINJA TURTLES!!!!"

  • I like NES. I haven't played any Master System games so I can't say anything.
