@1ohtaf1 heh, was confused by other comments, as I am not a great aircraft expert. :) Still no one answered my question - does that STOVL burn a lot of fuel, like on harrier or not?
@Spindry96 Yes they did, U.k, Spain, Italy etc.. use them, with a ski ram you can take off with heavier loads, it gives more lift to the aircraft.
From what i have read, U.S does not want to use them their LHD's are strictly for amphibious operations with light attack aircraft. It takes up deck space to park helo's.
Plus if they started using their LHD's as carriers it might be the excuse congress is looking for to axe a few super carriers....
Why did the plane take off vertically? I got it! It is convenient to fly to the neighbors, to drink beer). Here in Russia, many years ago to create one lot of this stuff. Expensive, unreliable, poorly, partially in the fighting capabilities, but it looks cool)

@Dragonmantis36 I know, I'm just saying the Harrier came 20 years before the Yak so It "must" be a copy since that's your reasoning to determine if the F-35 is a copy of the Yak or not.
Couple of question of this "ultimate" "strike" "fighter" or maybe just one what is wing load of this?
You know this aircraft do not like hit, do not like to be wet, and something like 30hours maintains for 1 hour flight? You know that right??? You also know the F-16 will rule him out of any job? And just do not tell me he have stealth (f-117 have more stealth then this "aircraft" and what happen to him).
@TheEpicNacho1 It's for aircraft carriers. Other planes like the F/A18 need to use a catapult and afterburner just to get off the flight deck, but this jet just about takes off by itself.
@Lloyd3legs Boeing lost the contract because their VSTOL version required removal of panels for normal flight. They couldnt even meet the contract requirements
@mrscottish1993 Euros didnt achieve shit. This is an American designed plane by an American company paid for by the American tax payer. Don't be confused by Euros being allowed to be taught to build it and who id running things and designing them
I used to think that the Americans have taken only with the VTOL Yak-141, until I found drawings of the Yak-43 (143) proposed by Yakovlev Design Bureau as a stealth fighter 5 gen in 1990 (along with Sukhoi (Su-47) and Mikoyan (MiG-1,44)
This is an exact copy of the F-35, only the wings are swept, and not orthorhombic (like the F-35). Missiles are also located inside the fuselage (and, in the same place)
@chroniclejoel Actually, the engine system was designed by Yakovlev in the late 1980s. Look at the Yak-141, it has an identical system. Shortly after the breakup of the Soviet Union Lockheed paired with Yak to make an export variant of the 141. The deal fell through but a few years later LM won the JSF competition because of their superior VTOL design.
"The only fighter in the world that is supersonic and can take off and land vertically."<-- Wrong. Yak141 has also the same abilities. That´s the plane from which F-35 got its engine.
Its not skill that wins wars anymore, its whos got the best computers! Bast in the old dog fight days of prop jobs you had to be an expert airman at the controls to survive. Now all you have to do is be able to play with a joystick! wtf
@eddieisfiction BVR combat depends on rules of engagement. F4 Phantoms in Vietnam could fight BVR with their Sparrow missiles , but this hardly ever happened due to ROE. Thus, big fat F4s had to dogfight with agile Mig 17s, 19s and 21s, to their general detrement.
@wadopotato33 The F35B cannot use vectored thrust in flight (VIFF) like the Harrier can. F35 are quoted as having similar agility to an F16, good, but way outclassed compared with Typhoons etc. F16 can pull 9G for a short time, Typhoon can do that indefinately and supersonic. Also, the rating for stealth on the F35 has been reduced to "Reasonably stealthy" from "Quite stealthy".
Take a look at the Wiki entry and see how many things are still wrong with this money pit. Afterburner use damages the airframe! Jesus H. tapdancing Christ!
what;s going to happen when computers says fuck u? this plane is gonna drop like a shit brick. I'de rather have a pilot who knows how to manuvre it without comps.
computers are great but wait until scalar weapons start being used which will knock out all electronic systems. With no manual fall back these pilots will be screwed.
whats up with the arguments about dogfighting abilities... thats what third world countries do... america is passed that now... its about air to ground support, and air to air sniping with stealth... quit living like its 1980s and Maverick and Iceman show you how its done.
Too fat to be stealth, not enough wing for a turn fight, too heavy to be that fast, thin skinned for ground support, too costly to properly train pilots in. and BVR combat is an old wet dream that has yet to be realized due to friend/foe recognition issues (friendly fire incidents), pilot training will trump technology every time.
@mattskag2 Too fat to be stealth? It isn't about being sleek it is about controlling the angle the radar bounces off of. As for too small of wings for quick turning that is what the vectored thrust is for. It will turn much faster than a normal plane. And too heavy to be fast? This plane is made almost entirely out of composites. You haven't said too many things that are intelligent.
@wadopotato33 I won't argue the merits of semi-stealth tech here. but the thrust vectoring on the F-35 appears to be for landing, not in flight. Even if it has true thrust vectoring it could use more wing. It's too heavy because all models will have the the mountings and extra bracing for the STOVL equipment(due to manufacturing costs), weather it is STOVL capable or not. This plane is a jack of all trades, master of none.
@mattskag2 I will agree that it is a jack-of-all-trades master of none. But it doesn't do anything poorly. It actually has a good thrust to weight ratio, and the wings were made for quick turning (the sweep and construction of the leading edge). It will not be able to replace the F-111 for bombing, will it not make an out-of-this world interceptor, but it will as an overall package have more survivability than current planes such as the f-16 and the f-15. Due in part to stealth.
Replace the A10? this isn't really a replacement for the AV8/Harrier. Overweight and overpriced it's still not the plane the Harrier is and is really a very poor design - based on all the original failed VTOL trials of years ago.
@persianmad Lol that shit was planted because we wanted to make you guys feel special and get distracted from our much better tech. The drone you got was an unarmed piece of shit drone from the late 1990's to early 2000's. You got a lemon, have fun reverse engineering and producing it for nothing!
@masterfistlord I think they can modernize the design, maybe even incorporate stealth and exhaust dampening technology. But it will still have to be slow, super maneuverable, able to take a nutshot from a 20-400 cannon and still fly, and will have to carry much the same armaments
It's "supposed" to have great maneuverability due to it's design making it highly unstable, and thus highly maneuverable. It has a computer system that constantly monitors it, keeping the aircraft in the air similar to that of the F-16.
@MrJohnDevour The police would pull up to give you a parking ticket, see your plane, pee themselves and drive away as fast as possible. No one messes with the F-35.
Most of the F35 variants will be cheaper than the ACTUAL lemon, the F22. The only one that'll match the pricetag of the latter is the F35B, the VTOL variant. I suspect there will be more C's and a ton more A's than B's, as the A's will replace the F16's and A10's.
@ViciousCannibal ??????? Replace the A-10 with this? Have you lost your train of thought somewhere? Replace the F-16,F-15,and F18 yes...replace the A-10 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!! The Army has been trying to get the A-10 project scrapped for 30 years and guess what...we can't find anything else that will carry a 30 mike gatling AND 50000 lbs of bombs while surviving enough flak to turn an F-18 into swiss cheese
@ViciousCannibal You want to call me a dipshit? They "plan" to replace a plane developed in 1972 somewhere around 2028...that's a 56 year tour of duty. And there is absolutely no way the F-35 is gonna be the plane to replace it. I would get into even more details but to dumb it down for you an airborne sub-sonic anti-tank cannon with a fixed wing bomb platform cannot be replaced by a supersonic jet with stealth capability and internal weapon pods
@surfgodx agreed. the JSF is a cool plane but it's no A-10. we need a proper replacement for it. it should be faster carry more payload and be tougher than the A-10. vtol would be a huge plus but imo should be secondary.
@simpsonfan13 Everything in aerodynamics is a compromise. The A-10 is the best at what it does while the F-35 seeks to do double duty as an air superiority/ground attack aircraft. It does neither brilliantly but is adequate to either role. Wouldn't want to dog fight an SU-35 with this but would have no problem taking a vector into strike range with Radar Guided weapon and then making a run for it. Stealth is only effective from the front when you turn you show up like pac man on a radar screen.

@S1lverspike I don't think it's that bad or we wouldn't be building it. people need to remember this video shows the VTOL variant. there are at least 3 variants with at least 3 different flight specs and payload capabilities.the conventional and carrier versions have larger wing and tail areas with internal gatlings for dogfighting and since they don't have all that equipment for VTOL they are inherantly faster and more maneuverable
@surfgodx what they need to do is upgrade the A-10 add in the DAS radar system it will be unmatched in air support. dont know why they would replace it, its not like its expensive to maintain a turbofan over a jet engine.
@Baseshocks they will never replace the A-10 with a jet. maybe some sort of hybrid VTOL vehicle that can carry a huge mofuggin anti-tank cannon AND 30k lbs of ordinance
Airplane can fly backwards?? TROLL SCIENCE

SvenTviking 1 month ago

With no manual fall back these pilots will be screwed.

whats up with the arguments about dogfighting abilities... thats what third world countries do... america is passed that now... its about air to ground support, and air to air sniping with stealth... quit living like its 1980s and Maverick and Iceman show you how its done.
eddieisfiction 1 month ago
Too fat to be stealth, not enough wing for a turn fight, too heavy to be that fast, thin skinned for ground support, too costly to properly train pilots in. and BVR combat is an old wet dream that has yet to be realized due to friend/foe recognition issues (friendly fire incidents), pilot training will trump technology every time.
mattskag2 1 month ago
@mattskag2 Too fat to be stealth? It isn't about being sleek it is about controlling the angle the radar bounces off of. As for too small of wings for quick turning that is what the vectored thrust is for. It will turn much faster than a normal plane. And too heavy to be fast? This plane is made almost entirely out of composites. You haven't said too many things that are intelligent.
wadopotato33 1 month ago
@wadopotato33 I won't argue the merits of semi-stealth tech here. but the thrust vectoring on the F-35 appears to be for landing, not in flight. Even if it has true thrust vectoring it could use more wing. It's too heavy because all models will have the the mountings and extra bracing for the STOVL equipment(due to manufacturing costs), weather it is STOVL capable or not. This plane is a jack of all trades, master of none.
mattskag2 1 month ago
@mattskag2 I will agree that it is a jack-of-all-trades master of none. But it doesn't do anything poorly. It actually has a good thrust to weight ratio, and the wings were made for quick turning (the sweep and construction of the leading edge). It will not be able to replace the F-111 for bombing, will it not make an out-of-this world interceptor, but it will as an overall package have more survivability than current planes such as the f-16 and the f-15. Due in part to stealth.

When i was in the army back in 80s we used A-10 (aka titanium bathtub) They will just keep upgradeing A-10 it cant be replaced

The f-35 was suppose to replace the AV8 harrier until the usmc saw the f35's price tag. am i correct?
Ryanmac317 1 month ago
@Ryanmac317 Yeah, but not killing your pilots with an horribly designed VTOL system should not have a price tag. :l
ArsArma 1 month ago
@ArsArma are u talking about the harrier? cus the f35 systems are all computerized.
Ryanmac317 1 month ago
@Ryanmac317 Yes, the Harrier VTOL system is prone to failure and cuases accidents while during operations and training.
ArsArma 1 month ago
@ArsArma do you know how difficult it is to become a pilot of one of these beasts?
Ryanmac317 1 month ago
@Ryanmac317 Yes, which is why it's such a shame when officer's die during training :P
ArsArma 1 month ago
Replace the A10? this isn't really a replacement for the AV8/Harrier. Overweight and overpriced it's still not the plane the Harrier is and is really a very poor design - based on all the original failed VTOL trials of years ago.

The only way you'll replace the A-10 is by having a slow-flying aircraft that's tougher and can carry more. F-35 is NO replacement for the A-10.

@persianmad Lol that shit was planted because we wanted to make you guys feel special and get distracted from our much better tech. The drone you got was an unarmed piece of shit drone from the late 1990's to early 2000's. You got a lemon, have fun reverse engineering and producing it for nothing!

Yes! We now have the technology to wiggle all the parts together. :)

Fact is, the JSF is NOT able to replace the A10. The A10 is the most effective asset for cas and the groundforces would dearly miss it.
masterfistlord 1 month ago
@masterfistlord I think they can modernize the design, maybe even incorporate stealth and exhaust dampening technology. But it will still have to be slow, super maneuverable, able to take a nutshot from a 20-400 cannon and still fly, and will have to carry much the same armaments
surfgodx 1 month ago
@surfgodx 20-40 mm cannon ^
surfgodx 1 month ago
@youL3w
It's "supposed" to have great maneuverability due to it's design making it highly unstable, and thus highly maneuverable. It has a computer system that constantly monitors it, keeping the aircraft in the air similar to that of the F-16.

Tabsinlab 1 month ago
Most of the F35 variants will be cheaper than the ACTUAL lemon, the F22. The only one that'll match the pricetag of the latter is the F35B, the VTOL variant. I suspect there will be more C's and a ton more A's than B's, as the A's will replace the F16's and A10's.
ViciousCannibal 1 month ago
@ViciousCannibal ??????? Replace the A-10 with this? Have you lost your train of thought somewhere? Replace the F-16,F-15,and F18 yes...replace the A-10 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!! The Army has been trying to get the A-10 project scrapped for 30 years and guess what...we can't find anything else that will carry a 30 mike gatling AND 50000 lbs of bombs while surviving enough flak to turn an F-18 into swiss cheese
surfgodx 1 month ago 23
@surfgodx In 2028, dipshit. Scheduled to replace it in 2028.
ViciousCannibal 1 month ago
@ViciousCannibal You want to call me a dipshit? They "plan" to replace a plane developed in 1972 somewhere around 2028...that's a 56 year tour of duty. And there is absolutely no way the F-35 is gonna be the plane to replace it. I would get into even more details but to dumb it down for you an airborne sub-sonic anti-tank cannon with a fixed wing bomb platform cannot be replaced by a supersonic jet with stealth capability and internal weapon pods
surfgodx 1 month ago
@ViciousCannibal we were supposed to have a moonbase in 2011...
PentoStar 1 month ago
@surfgodx Although to be fair to you, I bet the date will be extended a fuckton. I can't deny how awesome and important the A10 is.
ViciousCannibal 1 month ago
@surfgodx agreed. the JSF is a cool plane but it's no A-10. we need a proper replacement for it. it should be faster carry more payload and be tougher than the A-10. vtol would be a huge plus but imo should be secondary.
simpsonfan13 1 month ago
@simpsonfan13 Everything in aerodynamics is a compromise. The A-10 is the best at what it does while the F-35 seeks to do double duty as an air superiority/ground attack aircraft. It does neither brilliantly but is adequate to either role. Wouldn't want to dog fight an SU-35 with this but would have no problem taking a vector into strike range with Radar Guided weapon and then making a run for it. Stealth is only effective from the front when you turn you show up like pac man on a radar screen.

@surfgodx lol replace any jet with the f35 would be suicide this thing "cant turn, cant climb, cant run"
S1lverspike 1 month ago
@S1lverspike I don't think it's that bad or we wouldn't be building it. people need to remember this video shows the VTOL variant. there are at least 3 variants with at least 3 different flight specs and payload capabilities.the conventional and carrier versions have larger wing and tail areas with internal gatlings for dogfighting and since they don't have all that equipment for VTOL they are inherantly faster and more maneuverable
surfgodx 1 month ago
@surfgodx what they need to do is upgrade the A-10 add in the DAS radar system it will be unmatched in air support. dont know why they would replace it, its not like its expensive to maintain a turbofan over a jet engine.
Baseshocks 1 month ago
@Baseshocks they will never replace the A-10 with a jet. maybe some sort of hybrid VTOL vehicle that can carry a huge mofuggin anti-tank cannon AND 30k lbs of ordinance
