I live around 800 or less yds From the parimeter in Bury Its a Wreck now such a Shame It used to be such a Wonderful Airfeild Its now Home to Some Americans From Alconbury but still Paintballers have wrecked the place+Kids :-(
@TheFighterpilot93 It is indeed a wreck. The current owners (Strawsons) probably could have secured the site but to have it trashed and made unsafe by the local vandals probably added weight to their case for getting permission to develop the site. The Airfield Research Group were going to get a museum/archive set up in the gaurdhouse... I dont know if anythings happened with that.
@Hanglands Nothings Changed at all Its Still a wreck and Kids still venture on there and literally just destroy everything they use the main airfeild hangers for jet engine testing but apart from that the officers mess the guardroom hasnt changed its just gotten worse unfortuantly. I Remember when RAF Upwood used to be so much different.
Upwood is certainly the most 'intact' (if thats applicable here) RAF station in the area. The sound effects sort of reflect how the place made me feel on a cold and wet October morning.
For those of us who love "Appointment in London" which is probably one of the best fictional films about Bomber Command in WW2, which was filmed at RAF Upwood, I find the dereliction an insult to the bomber crews who were, to quote the film "unable to keep an appointment in London" We really have lost the page in UK these days.
Agreed YrHen, on all counts. We think the fireplace Dirk Bogarte stands in front of is shown here at 8:10 to 8:15. If its not that one, theres one identical on the wall behind it. I have a colour photo slide show posted up here somewhere which may show it.
Excellent video. This station has a long & varied history, It's a shame to see it in such a state of decay. What are the plans for this base,do you know?
Hi mate. Apparently the owners, 'Strawsons' have submitted plans to develop the site into a housing estate. I forget how many houses exactly. I think the hangars will be staying, and possibly the HQ and guard house too. Remains to be seen.

every time I go back there it has become more destroyed. Kids are always smashing it up.Though due to a recent fire- there is regular police patrols.

Excelent video, such a shame to see what was the biggest event in living history, just decaying and being lost to developers

Once a place of life, now reduced to a damp and moulding cold shell.
Only until you visit places like this does the history of former RAF UPWOOD hit you.
A site worth saving if only to remember the chaps that never came back to breakfast all those years ago.
Glad I had a beer in that place with the HAGs.
Cheers fellers.
