Apparently one of the people that worked on the TRON graphics later founded Wavefront, merged with Alias, resulting in the creation of Maya.

Alot of the 3D graphics in TRON was created without a graphical user interface. For example, the light cycle sequence in the canyon was plotted mathematically using coordinates in lines of code. What we call a 3D app user interface was being built day-by-day through the process of making the movie.

I believe the computer was called Foonley which was a modified DEC 10. It broke down often so a tech was always around to troubleshoot and locate what circuit failed (because of wirewrapping)

All custom software/hardware from III, Synthavision, and Robert Abel and associates. Some were raster based rendering, some were wireframe vector graphics shot with gels to give color and over multiple exposures to fake solid shading depending on the shot. Some elements were 2d animated. The idea of a graphics workstation didn't come around until the mid 80's. All of those companies are gone now. Today there's Rhythm and Hues Studios which was founded by ex Abel people.
