actually, i've read the actual story and they both live and the girl is still alive by the time the last leaf falls. she was dying of pneumonia

In the original story, they were girls, not a boy and girl.. They were artists, actually.. One of them was suffering from pneumonia.. When this sick girl was loosing her will to live, her friend approached their neighbor, also a great painter, (they're living in an apartment) to ask for some help.. Then as the leaves on the vines fell one by one, the sick girl continuously said that if the last leaf on the vine would fall, she'll die.. So one night, after the last leaf fell, their neighbor

(continuation) painted a leaf.. The next few days, the sick girl, seeing the "leaf" still hanging from the vine, realized that she was not meant to die and chose to continue living.. They later learned that their neighbor died of pneumonia.. The neighbor got it when he was painting (it was snowing heavily) his greatest masterpiece, the last leaf..

in the original story there are two girls, they are friends, and one falls with a hard flew. Her friend cannot help her, for the other girl doesnt have a desire to live. But the one who saves her is the old poor painter, who has never made any masterpiece. The leaf he painted to make this girl believe that it's not over was his first and last masterpiece. Drawing it at night for her, he got the pneumonia and died. Seeing the leaf trembling on the branches she starts to believe in life again
