Prince killed this thing. You can't take your eyes off of him. He's got that soul/blues thing happening. And when he walks off the stage, he knows that he's a bad ass! But, this ain't nothing new to us true Prince fans. He's been doing this shit for years. A true genius!
Well... if anyone ever doubted Prince's soloing ability.... you really shouldnt after this. This is the best version of this track that Ive ever heard, bar none.
I think Jeff L. wouldn't care for the intro. He and G.H. as well as the rest are soul mates, I still have some of J.L. music when he was Electric Light Orchestra
Go to your dictionary, look for the word "pimp" - You will see a picture of Prince wearing this outfit and walking off stage the way he did here. Also, go to "showmanship", you will see another pic of Prince being held and pushed back like in this video. Finally, look for "amazing". Again, you'll find a pic of this moherfucker shredding that damn ax!
When one chooses to excell as something, theres the oportunity to amaze. Although I'm a major fan of all the performers on stage.... Prince is a Jedi Master of the guitar..
If you rip it like he just did....... It leaves everybody stoked !!
Some people always loved to hate Prince because of his persona, but this video showed to general public something that all his fans knew. He is a great musician, in the true sense of the word. Master producer, songwriter, arranger, multi instrumentalist AND singer.
Ok, Prince knows how to strut his stuff, it's what he does. That said, can any of you wanna-be guitarists copy this lead? C'mon guys, Prince has always been one of the most underrated guitarists of our time. He simply blew this one away! I wish I could do that! (I'd even wear the red hat!)Talent is talent....he's got a bunch!
I'm about to turn 64 and Prince showed up past my prime. Still, I always watched him for his theatrics and put him in the category of a cabaret performer. When this tribute aired I had it on as background noise and, as I walked past the boob tube I stopped to watch. Well, when Prince started to fling his slingblade, I sat the fuck down! Sure as hell opened my eyes.
I'm about to turn 64 and Prince showed up past my prime. Still, I always watched him for his theatrics and put him in the category of a cabaret performer. Also tired of the ridiculous statement '' Where did his guitar go''? Are you for real? It is a pompous over done theatrical gimmick that we all should be tired of ,unless we are able to catch the guitar and keep it. And that is not happening. He has had the guitar forever. That's his baby. So please give it a rest. I have seen Prince 17 times, so I don't want to hear how I'M a '' HATER'' . I Like his playing and showmanship, but not to keen on his songs overall as far as lyrics.
I am tired of hearing how Prince blew everybody away. First off, it wasn't a competition. It was a celebration for all involved. Great song with great lyrics. A song which Prince probably wish he wrote( Lyrically speaking) I absolutely think Prince is immensely talented, but he does not impress me with his lyric content. He has written a handful, at best, of good songs as far as lyric content goes. Mostly for others. That is part of being a writer/ composer. Nice solo, great performer.
@idolhands50 i dont recall anyone saying it was the best lyrical solo ever.. it was the best guitar solo ever witnessed to mankind. George Harrison's own son was getting excited to be standing behind him blowing his dad's song away. No, it wasn't a competition, but maybe he didn't blow them away as in defeating them, but blew their minds with how well he nailed that solo. Give credit where credit is due sir. Don't try to take away from it with irrelevant arguments to points that dont exist.
@lookitswade Unfortunately the comment you responded to is taken out of context. It was part of a conversation I was having with someone. Didn't address that comment, so, taken at face value does seem a bit out of place with the subject matter.OOPS.. o _ 0.. My bad! However, I do find it ludicrous that you sifted through 2 months of lurid and puerile comments to address me. Atypical of an overzealous rabid music fan.The pulchritude of your comment is the psuedo - intellect you tried to convey.
Prince wasn't showing off. Prince was just being Prince. And besides, he doesn't have to. His talents speaks for itself. If he stood there and did nothing, you still wouldn't be able to take your eyes off of him. He has stage presence up the ass!
rolling stones left Prince off their list of greatest guitarist while including people like Kurt Cobain (who was an inferior guitarist compared to prince). This was a slap in the face by Prince to rolling stones. Alot of people didnt know that he could play like this, so yes he was showing off. Big deal. Alot of people would show off in that situation
To be honest... I didn't watch the video... The music just blew my mind... this cover is just beautiful!!!! Love the guitar, the voices, everything!!!!
Nice - great song - a real tribute to George - Great players and nice to see Dani on stage with all his "uncles" again. Why Prince feels the need to over-act like that is beyond me - he's a great player and nails that solo with plenty of expression and feel. Who needs the theatrics during a tribute? Seems a bit trite.
@lyricon1963 Prince has admitted that he did the gig mostly so he could play with Tom Petty, who he apparently worships. So Prince was showing off for his idol, plus he's just one of those theatrical guitarists--he gets into it and he loves to move. But mostly, I think he was trying to impress Petty. Kinda cute to see rock stars showing off for each other!
@paxpaul Each other? Prince was the only one showing off, begging for attention from Petty. On his knees begging. Literally. He was saying " Look... Look!..Lookie over here.. see how fast I play? that's what it's all about right? Playing fast and jumping up and down running around? You like my hat? Cool hat huh! I don't look fat in these pants do I?" Petty was not impressed. It was pathetic and needy.
@jackhammer111 Well, although I disagree with you--I think Prince was great and Petty liked it--I certainly can't say you're wrong, and I definitely think Prince was showing off. For all I know, Petty might hate Prince deeply. So, no argument here, just two opinions. BTW, I'm just curious, are there any covers of this song that you'd recommend as good versions? I always like to hear what others consider great music, especially when we disagree like this. Peace!
To me one of the best musicians of all time, 2night i'll be attending a concert from Prince and I truly hope he'll give us some of his magical 'Hendrix' skills...
I keep hearing the Santana version of this song (which sucks) so I had to listen to this one a few times to cleanse my ears. Santana's guitar playing sounds like a roll of toilet paper compared to Prince's.
I Cry everytime i watch this!!!!!!!!! Prince did is damn thing. Look at the faces of everybody on that stage!!! They are amazed!!!!!!! Awesome!!!!!!!! Luv U Prince!!!!!
@Koesl -- True dat! Never been able to determine if Petty's look was sheer amazement or pissed Prince wouldn't stop (probably both). Either way, glad Dhani dug it.
This is the best version of this classic song!!! George is probably looking down from his heaven, saying "Prince, now THAT's what I fucking meant!!"
People, are you serious this man (prince) is one if not the greatest musician ever he played half a dozen instruments when he was six. On his first album he played every instrument. He owns the guitar.
Prince totally killed this song , Yes Clapton did a heck of a job as the orginator of the solo but princes version had hints of all his influences like I can hear Jimi,Stevie Ray, Wes Montgomery, theres rock licks Jazz build ups, etc. and some of the greatest Stage presence I've ever seen.... Prince Should be the professor of musicology at some major university like berklee.....
wow. listen to the shimmering simplicity of Clapton's work - (the first guitar player is doing Clapton's bit from the record note for note) - do the research, you lazy little monkeys. What Prince is playing is quite easy to do. Wow. Prince cares for, nurtures, and feeds one thing only. Eclectic Gregarian Oxymoron. This species is too stupid to live. George spent nearly 2 decades with the biggest egomaniacs on the planet. He had it with insecure little boys. Hint: your guitar is not your dick.
@bamboosa Technically to a beginner it's not so simple. If You're Prince or Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughn ETC It's simple. It all deals with the experience behind your craft. And maybe that was the plan to play Claptons part note for note. Some things are very memorable as you have proven in your statement. Apparently you knew it Was Claptons part note for note because it first left an impression in your mind either involuntary or not, when you heard him play it.
why is NO ONE addressing the fact that Prince made the guitar fucking DISAPPEAR after he was done playing it....no, SERIOUSLY, where the fuck did that thing go?! Does Prince have a dude whos job it is to catch airborne guitars? Hes got a guy on the payroll whos job it is to hold him up while he crowd surf solos so, I can believe it if he does.....I DEMAND to know where that guitar went when he chucked that thing up there! That is fucking amazing......LMMFAO

I had forgotten how incredible Prince is. Thanks for posting this!

wow. listen to the shimmering simplicity of Clapton's work - (the first guitar player is doing Clapton's bit from the record note for note) - do the research, you lazy little monkeys. Hint: your guitar is not your dick.
bamboosa 1 year ago
What are you trying to say? The only way to play this song is to copy note for note what the original did?
What a boring world you live in if that's the case.
Prince took a simple solo (your words), and turned it into his own simple solo (again, your words). What's your problem?
GKFC 1 year ago
@bamboosa Technically to a beginner it's not so simple. If You're Prince or Clapton or Stevie Ray Vaughn ETC It's simple. It all deals with the experience behind your craft. And maybe that was the plan to play Claptons part note for note. Some things are very memorable as you have proven in your statement. Apparently you knew it Was Claptons part note for note because it first left an impression in your mind either involuntary or not, when you heard him play it.

Prince owned the rest of this song after 3:30 on the time line.

why is NO ONE addressing the fact that Prince made the guitar fucking DISAPPEAR after he was done playing it....no, SERIOUSLY, where the fuck did that thing go?!

He made that thing wail. Prince is a monster. No doubt about it. The boy is shorter than the guitar but makes it his woman.
