  • Is there any chance that your alter ego (N-word Kenrg) will be making a come back anytime soon? The geezer makes me laugh!!!

  • LOL - He's been a bit busy lately, but maybe he'll feel up to it after the election ;^)

  • Running out of witty things to say!

  • I ran out of witty things to say back in 1986.

  • Vomit Heads Get Out

  • I miss Uncle Joe

  • I've been hearing a lot of that lately - Maybe it's time for a comeback...

  • vlogging is a new beast - you are in frontier lands :)

  • A beast indeed - And it's taking over - Help!!!

  • "Get the hell off my lawn!" - a year later and I still love it!

  • Well, they're still on my lawn!

  • the first one!! this uncle guy!! MORE OF HIM PLEASE!!

  • Careful what you ask for...

  • Without personae I would be nothing! ;)

  • A little personae never hurt anybody, right? ;^)

  • Nice, Ken in an introspective moment. so charming, so gentle, so sensitive.....ahhhhh

F THAT, KICK ASS KEN LET YOUR ID FREAKIN FLY THRU CYBERSPACE!!

  • Let my id fly? Sounds good, but careful what you ask for!

  • I bet you would be great as a character in a Renaissance Festival. You pass as nobility Sir.

  • Back in high school, I did work the local Renaissance Fair as a town crier. I don't know if I was any good, but we sure had fun.

  • Wow, that just reminded me. The first video of yours I watched was a professor video. I've always liked your video's and I'm glad you stick around, whichever personae you choose.

  • The Professor brought me a lot of subscribers, but that was quite a while ago. Thanks for sticking with me!

  • Thank you. But only sometimes witty? Oh, I guess that's alright. Thanks!

  • I get 10 times the traffic vlogging than documentaries and other projects, but....

I would rather film the planet than vlog and that's why I closed my vloggerheads account after a week......

I knew my departure would raise no fanfare... Nor did I seek to add to the drama... I had a few good friends there but there were many there whom I could share no cousel...

  • I also was disturbed by the gratuitous use of profanity and by the plethora of crude and vulgar behavior... I found these demeaning to me and the few good folk I knew...

I appreciate your inviting me early on and including me as your friend... I will always consider you my shipmate, Compadre...

  • If I had more time to work on the travel shorts (like the Jack London Ranch thing), I'd do more of those than vlogs, regardless of the views. But I think I need to do a bit of each to really fully enjoy the experience.

Well, your absence at VH was noticed, and you missed at least by me. It ain't for everyone, I know, but it's also changing day by day (week five was nothing like week one), so if you'd ever like to come back...

  • I use a lot of characters as I am not good at just sitting and talking to the camera like you and others. I need more structure and planning I guess.

  • Structure and planning are good. Laziness and improv save time ;^)

  • Enjoyed this. Been on here over a year and a half and can't believe it (haven't been making videos that long.. still in the 'I suck' stage lol).

I like skits but anymore I think I'm partial to vloggers a little more.

  • Just work through the "I suck" stage - Hell, I still hate my voice, and post each vlog thinking I missed half the points I wanted to make. But it's all about being real and honest, and I guess I've got that down enough, and I'm sure you do too.

  • We love your characters Ken! ... but your insight is also welcome.

  • Well, thank you very much!

  • I never met you as anything other than, Kenrg and was surprised to see those characters. It's my wish that I continue to see you in vloggs regardless of the personae you chose. It all boils down to thought anyway.

    Frank

  • Right on; it's the thought that counts, whether done "in character" or otherwise - Thanks!

  • it really interesting to watch how people get more comfortable in front of the camera over a period time.

  • Very true - and you can see it in so many of the vloggers who started around the same time as I did. Great vlogging out there now by lots of people.

  • There ya' go. I truly miss Uncle Joe Bile. Really.

  • This being an election year, he may make a return visit... you never know... ;^)

  • what is the point of vloggerheads if we can't get on it to see you? do you only vlog for each other, the select few?

  • Send me your email address and I'll send you an invite - It's only invite only right now while we're in alpha testing. When we have the feature set and functions all working the doors will be thrown wide open. Meanwhile, I'm happy to invite any of my subscribers who'd like to see what's going on there.

  • Even though I rarely show my face on camera or say anything directly. I think my videos express very deeply who I am. I think it's just different ways of getting out what we feel.

  • Exactly, I don't think a vlog has to be just a talking head, or even talking at all. We all have different ways to express ourselves, and we should enjoy the variety of expression without prejudice.

  • Psychological projection is indeed a powerful concept in this new video revolution. Most are not aware of its revealing nature.

  • The beautiful thing is, you don't need to be aware of what you're doing to do it well, if you know what I mean.

  • I know *I* definitely got sick of doing characters. You're right, it's a more cozy place to just 'be yourself' here, despite what those characters/masks afford us the opportunity to do and say.

I've been missing this entire exchange over there on Vheads. DAMN SCHOOL!

Ps. I dare you to put it in pigtails and vlog as Cindy Brady.

  • is this a double dog dare, Curt?

  • I actually started a pigtails vlog once, but deleted it before I could finish it. But now that I've been dared...

Damn school? Come on, last semester! Enjoy! It's okay if you miss a vlog or two.

  • You always have something to say, mask or no mask, but sometimes saying it in a mask can be more fun :)

  • More fun, yes, but sometimes people concentrate on the mask and the point gets lost. Well, who cares, as long as we're having fun, right?

  • Well, I'm all for fun but you seem like a guy who would like to have fun making a point so people can have fun while getting the point. If they don't get the point, what's the point? My point is that for *you* I think people getting the point is part of what makes the fun fun for you, and for others the only point is fun. At this point you might say "Humphrey, what are you going on about?" :)

  • U share to a good topic there kenrg, i personaly think its the fear of acceptence that makes us wear the masks to say what we want to, however sometimes people take it alittle to serious and call us "wierd" or "freak" or whatever, even tho we only put on the mask's to say what we want an not come across as a complete moron

With this being said, what we truly want to say can not be said through a mask, as it is the mask acts like a brick wall to the outside world, its a sad fact, but still a fact

  • Yes, truly - the need for acceptance is a cause for a lot of the masks we wear, and not just in vlogging. Great comment, thanks.

  • Interesting topic! It wasn't until my 19th video that I finally showed my face in one of my song/videos. And it wasn't until several videos after that that I actually talked (as opposed to just singing) in a video. Creating characters, though, I've found often helps with the presentation of songs... especially predominantly silly songs like the ones in my collection!

  • Those are characters? Those aren't all you?

  • I use philosophy-banana on my hair, and you???

  • I use soap and hot water!

  • hehe... I loved the 'Yeh, I'm doing great.. it's good to be me' ;)

I like all your characters, especially the one you do for the main part of these vid. A bit quirky but a great character :)

  • Yeah, that main character works well - nothing like me at all, of course, but it works well ;^)

  • Ok great explaination of why and how but the ending was scarey lol "get the Hell off my lawn" hehehhehehehe

  • I loved doing that Uncle Joe Bile character ("get the hell off my lawn") but not many people got what I was doing or appreciated it. But, damn, he was fun!

  • I can just bet . but see you did acomlish something if you got reactions one way or another . you did him well cause he was scarey creepy sort of way. while ohters may try and it would sound stupid. Ive seen very bad videos. yours is good.

  • Great video Ken! I had my 2 year anniversary a couple weeks ago. Curt commented watching some of my very first vids that it looks like i wasn't talking to anybody as well. I didn't have an audience in mind. I haven't done many characters, but the one thing I always did was put background music in my vids....to me, that somehow added to the video. Now, I am much better at vlogging as a craft and realize I don't need to have the other tricks and gimmicks to get my point across. Great video.

  • Thanks - I think you put your finger on it when you say "tricks and gimmicks" - But let me ask you this: as you've gotten more comfortable speaking to the camera, do you think this has made you a better communicator at work or in social situations?

  • Oh yes. I've talked about this to a lot of ppl (maybe even in a few vlogs). I find myself becoming a much better public speaker at work as well as communicating with my friends and family. I have a way where I can slightly separate logic from emotion now that I couldn't before, and realize how they tie together. Through this all, i really feel like I've changed tremendously!

  • Hey Kenrg! I'm going to recommend you subcribe to Vlogbrothers because they are funny and really intellegent and your intellegent 2 and i think you'd enjoy them!!

    KTHXBIA

  • Your funny too btw i left that out

    nice video ^.^

  • Thanks - I've heard of the vlogbrothers, but haven't been following them - I'll give it another look.

  • I'm so in love with you Ken! You're too handsome! I so enjoy your vids.....keep 'em coming.

  • (so glad the camera's not on to catch me blushing...)

  • I actually like how genuine you are now. I look for that with most of the people I sub to. Keep on truckin' Ken... I think you're great!

    <3 Kels

  • Thanks!

  • Happy vloggerversary Ken.

I must admit i much prefer it when people don't hide behind characters when vlogging :)

  • Well, sometimes it's not so much "hiding behind" characters as using a character to help make a point; removing the subtlety of actual people by using a "type" as a form of shorthand to communicate quickly. Or I could be full of shit. But thank you very much.

  • Maybe it's one of those "Mommy didn't play peek-a-boo with you enough" things -- Where's Kenny? Wheeeere's Kenny? THERE HE IS!! Heheh -- whatever, all your personae have a great sense of humor.

  • LMAO - You probably hit it right on. It's one of those "youngest child" problems; by the time I came around they were done playing games.

  • Good to see you over "here" buddy! It was almost exactly a year ago we met in SF, do you know they are turning the Maxwell Hotel in to a "boutique" hotel now? Guess that prices me out of their market! I hope we have not seen the last of the characters, or your appearances on YT!:)

  • You haven't seen the last of me (or the tenants of my warped brain) either here or anyplace else. And silly me, I thought the Maxwell was already a "boutique" hotel! Next time, let's meet up in Las Vegas!

  • Boutique? I think it was just in need of modernisation, unlike these places that pay thousands to put the original fixtures back in! As for Las Vegas we would love to see you, we are there from April 11th to the 18th:)

  • You're a very handsome man, ken.

  • I know. But thanks anyway. And right back at ya.

  • I had not yet seen any of your characters, that was a really incredible twist to me and now I am going to have to go check out some of your older videos. Heck I subbed for your vlogs, I hadn't even realized that you had those other sides to your personality.

  • Don't bother going back, they're awful ;^)

But maybe it is time to do some more character stuff... hmmm....

  • I started off by a video response to Ysabellabrave. It sort of broke the ice between myself and my webcam. Great vlog. hugs, Chris

  • That first vlog of mine was also a video response. I think that feature alone was the stepping stone for so many people. Thanks!

  • Wauw how time flies. I guess you've become more and more comfortable with vlogging so you don't need to hide behind characters anymore. I would never even try it because I would just know I'd only be making a fool of myself. I've just gained enough confidence to to talk into the camera but it still doesn't feel comfortable. You make it look so easy though. Like you've never done anything else =]

  • Like I've never done anything else? Well, maybe just talking to myself a lot was good practice ;^)

  • Haha, I meant that's how comfortable you look vlogging =] (but you know that, lol)

  • You should bring some of those characters back once in awhile, or create some new ones...that's fun stuff!

The danger, speaking from experience, is locking yourself into one personae and limiting the ways that you can express yourself.

  • I realized early on that I didn't want to feel "trapped" into any one idea of what this medium was for. I like to vlog, I like to do silly skits, I like to make mini-documentaries, and I like to just do whatever strikes me. To me, that's the best part about something like YouTube.

  • Ahhh, Evolution is cool. :) Happy Anniversary.

  • Thanks - It's cool... and a little frightening too...
