The boys are KILLING it here and the late great Alan Murphy is leading the attack. This is Go West at their absolute peak. Saw them about haf dozen times in LA during this period and they were always brilliant. Alan helped define their unique sound, and after his loss they were never the same.
@jonsilence I was the keyboards roadie on that show and Alan actually threw it across the stage out of anger, it it bounced off the riser and hit me behind the keys rig. Apparently it didn't keep tune too well.
He came up after and apologised though. Brilliant player and a lovely gentle guy.
@jonsilence Alan was a complete sweetie. Generally very quiet and mild-mannered, I think he just got frustrated his guitars weren't doing what he wanted of them.
Woah! The Internet truly does make the world a smaller place.
@nogferatu - don't think he did have a deal with Aria as I read he wasn't keen on the Esprit (just after I bought one lol!). All his recorded solos around this time would've been using one of his Squier Strats. John can shed some light here ;-)
brings so much back in memories, just fantastic. I think that there was a strike or something at channel 4, so Go west had to fill the whole show, no one else could perform, they did a whole set. Jules holland with paul yates - introducing them - heres a lumber of numbers from GO west !!!!
Thanks for posting. Its rare to see some Alan Murphy footage. He was such a great player. He used Aria guitars and a session amp. Such a great, great player. I agree, RIP Alan.
Peter Cox, Richard Drummie, Alan Murphy (Guitar), Graham Edwards (Bass), Peter-John Vettese (Keyboards), Tony Beard (Drums), Carol Kenyon, Sylvia Mason-James. (Backing Vox)
It's a delight to see how many people are aware of the mega talents of Alan Murphy. I listen to A LOT of fusion .. A LOT of it, and honestly, when people ask me who takes the cake, it's Mr. Alan Murphy every time. Scott Henderson, Al Di Meola, Buzz Feiten, Allan Holdsworth, Greg Howe, Wayne Krantz .. All phenoms, but Alan's the only guy I've ever heard that can make Holdsworthian playing sound accessible.
Damn, u know your drummers. I really like his style, all that groovin he's doin with the lead guitarist, nice interplay between them, all the stuff after 4:00 in the outtro is smokin.
R.I.P. Alan Murphy you are sorely missed & so underrated when you were here - creator of some of the most finely crafted guitar solo's I have ever heard, only my opinion - but they make the usual suspect guitar demi gods look a bit stupid.
Yes Indeed!! - this performance inspired me to go to Peter Cooks Guitar World and pick up a gunmetal blue Esprit for the princely sum of £195 - shortly after I ditched the floyd copy and stuck a Kahler on there! I think Alan's best work was done with a kahler - very expresive trem.
I've actually had the honour of playing one of Alan's Squiers and the action was set ridiculously high (a total shock) - amazing he pulled such stunning runs out of it. I had a horrible moment trying to nail this very solo - they were still his original strings - God knows how I'd have felt if I snapped one! The guitar is now owned by the guy who got the Fender Hot Squad together. Cheers John - I will never, ever forget you trusting me to play it ;o)
@alexgtr789 Been mentioned a few times lol :-) It's an Aria RS Esprit with ACT 3 trem - this was Aria's version of the Floyd rose. In a Guitarist mag interview Alan said he wasn't keen on the trem on those guitars but he had to use them as part of the Go West signature clean sound. Scott
Murphy is just phenomenal in this clip....I wish there was some there was more live stuff of Murphy on here, Kate Bush's Violin and a few Level 42 clips are all I can find.
Shame the camera director didn't know when to switch in for the solos, he's got a camera on Alan Murphy at the right points, but doesn't switch to him, fire that guy!!
This is what music is all about. Alan Murphy was a legend. An awesome song and an unbelievable energy created on stage. That guitar outro should go down in history, or should i say, WILL!
This is an awesome performance- such a top flight band, Murphy was a legend saw him with Level 42 a few times.Love Tony Beard's drumming on this. What a great individual sound they got on the Tube . Great post thanks
Man did you catch that guitar solo!!?

Yes Tony has left the small fish pond of London for the ocean of NYC talent.
Great for the US but not so good for us in the UK we really miss him.

The amp's a Fender Super Champ and all the clean tones would've been DI'ed through his rack

Lemme know, all you guitarheads on here, your emails and I'll send you free tickets to the next Guitar Nation show!
