I've heard of the idea that the original gospels were written in Aramaic. But I have very simple reasons for not buying into that. The Greek Septuagint(Greek Old Testament)was written 270 years or so before Christ - to accommodate all the dispersed Jews of the nations conquered by Rome. Further, evidence in the 4 Gospels proves Israel - who was also conquered by Rome -- had likewise become bilingual(Hebrew & Greek)by the time of Christ.

Take Matthew as an example. He WORKED for the Romans as a tax collector. This smacks true of there being no Greek language barrier in Israel. Jesus was able to interface directly with the Roman soldier "of great faith" with no apparent need of an interpreter. Jesus spoke directly to the Gentile woman who plead "even the little dogs eat crumbs off the masters table." Jesus also spoke directly with Pilate.

The Jews plainly understood Pilate - Pilate directly understood them. The offer for Barrabas & the screams to "crucify him!" were also quite plainly understood. This follows through in Acts Ch 2. But the Gospel message was subsequent to this miracle by Peter explaining it to them in the one common tongue - Greek.
