I know James Taylor created this song but the Isley Brother's cover will always be my favorite version of this song. Not being bias just being honest..
I was lucky enough to have front row RAH seats for these shows...the man was just on fire and this was one of my favourites from the evening for sure! Great post.
@BucksOwin Don't know who you were talking too.....but NO ONE compares to E.C or J.T.....PERIOD! NO ARGUEMENT...............JUST A FACT! Benn a lover of these guys since the 60's, and have seen them both within the last 5 years in concert, and they JUST KEEP GETTING BETTER!
I've followed EC for many years ( 1973 and on! ) and this solo is one of the greatest solos I've seen him do...pure flowing lead guitar, just blowing your mind.
I love Eric Clapton and this is a great rendition of the JT's song ... but ... compare his guitar solo in this song with the solos of two great (unfortunately dead) jazzmen like pianist player Don Grolnick (in many live versions with JT) or tenor sax player Michael Brecker (in the original song). Listen to the other versions and you will see that Clapton is a great singer and a great composer but not a god musician, as many people think.
Could anyone actually cover/tab this song? its just too damn beautiful not to learn how to play this... too bad im not good enough just yet. ERIC CLAPTON is GOD.

@thedonace213 Well, it's on Clapton's Reptile album if you want the Clapton version, but the original is James Taylor. I don't know where you normally get your music from, but whatever source it is, it's bound to have one or the other, if not both.
True, of course Eric Clapton is great, c'mon, I know...but no one does these songs like the one and only JT..c'mon, the original ones are soooooooooooo great, that it is a tribute that Eric would pay respects to JT, as JT truly admires Eric. I did not get goose bumps on this one, but always do with James, though Wonderful Tonight gives me the bumps-that is how I rate a love song......
@skeeptar no emotion? he had the emotion to CREATE the song, and he put plenty of soul into that motherfucker, have u listened to the sax solo? believe me, eric clapton wouldnt be emulating no emotionless bum. dont sell a master like JT short
This was always the only JT tune I EVER liked...and not until I'd heard Rosemary Clooney do it on the "Atlantic Jazz" boxed set did I like it...but this performance is a revelation. And not because of his guitar-playing: Hey Clapton is Clapton, you expect the tone to sing, you expect the blues licks to be as good as five notes can be...it's his singing. I always thought he was a good singer... now I'll have to admit, at least once, he was GREAT. Michaels Bolton and MacDonald, slash wrists NOW.
The James Taylor version was so good that I thought it couldn't get any better until now. Funny thing is that I always liked Eric Clapton but wasn't the biggest fan. This song though,...WOW. This is so much more soulful. The absolute best version! The Lead guitar licks are in the best taste. Great stuff!
Wow..brilliant version of James Taylor's song. Clapton is a great vocalist and there is just an incredible solo coming up in this song. I mean, I have heard many different Clapton solos but what he does in this song is truly inspired and brilliant. Stay tuned!
everybody justly speaks about Clapton's guitar skills, but I think that besides these manifest abilities, Clapton is the best singer that I have ever heard
I wonder if Eric has any surviving relatives back in England who occasionally see him on TV winning a Grammy or an Obe or something like that, and manage to think to themselves, "Wow, we really were total dicks to that poor kid."
I think Eric's trying to copy the Isley brothers version of this tune (orginally written by James Taylor). Not bad. You sould listen to the Isley Bros version and compare it to this. It's pretty close.
One of the greatest love-song of the last century, no doubt! And even though I'm deeply moved by James Taylor's own versions, this one by Mr. Eric Clapton and The Impressions, rocks it to heaven!!!
I know James Taylor created this song but the Isley Brother's cover will always be my favorite version of this song. Not being bias just being honest..

No use in arguing which version is better or best coz it's up to each personal's taste.
We can only say we LIKE this or that version more, but they are all great in their
own way. For me, even Clapton is one of my great heroes, i prefer the Isley Brothers' version.
russjchandra 1 year ago
Sick version of the Isley's rendition of the song which has so much more funk, soul, and feeling than the JT version- which isn't bad either.
