Closing this strait is not as easy as it sounds. And Iran is such a mess they couldn't close an umbrella.

If Iran closed the waterway we have enough oil reserves to outlast any closure. In fact China and some of the other Asian countries would be hurt so badly that they would have to go to war with the Iranians within a few weeks. The price of oil would rise and the economy of Iran would collapse. Remember they need to sell the oil as badly as the world needs the oil. So they may huff and puff but no waterway is going to be shut down.

no... The market works like this. The less supply their is, the more it is worth. SO if Iran shuts oil off, the oil on the market will be EXPENSIVE. It will effect every single person that uses cars, trains, airplanes, countries economies. etc. Iran has balls, Israel just keeps talking and threathening SINCE 2007. 5 years later.... If they cut off their biggest supply of money then they commit suicide. Actually the Chinese navy would be forced to open the waterway because they have no reserve of oil. @zizzy007 Oil in storage ready to use is strategic petroleum reserve which is SPR. The US SPR is the largest emergency supply in the world with the current capacity to hold up to 727 million barrels (115,600,000 m3). China has only recently started to plan for a SPR. They have some for a few days but are way behind the US. They need oil or their economy collapses right away. The same is true for many Asian countries.

Iran would still sell oil to China and if the US doesn't allow the oil tanker to leave the PG, then its a clash against US and China; Iran would never cut oil to Russia, Syria or China.

@zizzy007 You really don't understand. You can't close the Gulf to just certain countries. It has to be closed or open. Most, if not all of the oil, that comes to the US is aboard ships that are NOT American. The United States does not operate a fleet of oil tankers.

The pressure is too high right now and the Obama Administration is not capable of keeping this thing from boiling over. Especially with a hotly contested election season underway in which the economy is key issue and the eventual GOP nominee (Romney) is destined to sweep the floor with the President on that issue. I am still convinced that a dust-up with Iran is coming soon, constituting an "October Surprise" but it won't end there. The Law of Unintended Consequences will very much be in play.

She forgot the mention the main factor here; instigation by Israel. None of this would be happening if Israel didn't feel threatened by a rising Iranian military power. Imagine if Iran was given the freedom to expand its influence as it chose. A close partnership with the united states and a strategic partnership with China, India, Pakistan and latin american countries would mean Israel would be less able to counter Iranian regional influence. Iran could then overwhelm Israel and free Palestine.

With the suspension of the joint Israeli/US defence exercises, it would appear at least for now, that the regional players are prepared to sit back and take a deep breath. Waiting to see if Iran will follow through on its threat to close the straits once the Euro Sanctions take effect. Waiting to see if Israel will go alone in hitting Iranian nuclear sites. They seem to be getting more hysterical by the day.
