  • too bad some idiot @ Rolling Stone Mag trashed this album in a review and the band fell apart ..later incarnations basically sucked and their live performances were horrid!... unable to duplicate this studio sound live and Ferguson and California were never to reunite again!

  • I think I'm the #1 Spirit head in the world. Saw the band 4 times. Same thing happened to me. I heard the 1st spirit album as a kid and was hooked ever since.

  • jack cassidy randy califoria jeez these guys were good got stoned and listened to potato land way 2 many times merry x=ma

  • The same skull used in the movie 'Hugo", only in the movie it was painted to look metallic.

  • amazing photos! the backing track is a a great fit too! :D :D

  • One of the greatest albums of all time. Take your rap, and stick it.

  • there's always one a-hole in the bunch

  • Spirit of 76 album is a true work of art brilliant :)

  • seventy's rock is the best!

  • Really? Yes, really.

  • Man, this is the real deal. I graduated high school in 1969 and by 1970 I was a full blown Spirit head. Gimme a small break, I'm from Ala-freaking-bama. One of the best bands of all time!

  • Many times played and many times high. How else do you bear the misery of urban life on the streets of NJ in 69? I played this for my friends in the basement on a stereo connected hrough my Fender Bassman. Those were the days. 17 years old in 70 with all shit breakin loose. draft cards four finger counts MD 2020 and a full breakfast of great music from the 12 Dreams

  • @TheStampedehero

Wow, how close to my own experince, also in my basement, the gathering place for all the 'heads,' only we played all our stuff on a stereo connected to a Marshall amp.

Only 14 at the time, but already well versed in some of the greatest music being put out then, and up to this date. We don't have those parties these day, but we still have the music, and the very fond memories.

    Peace.

    Rock

  • CSNY, Helpless, can't WAIT to hear from you. No limp, uncaring handshake here. Rich, powerful 'moguls' as they call them, are plotting your denuding by degrees as the roles get more and more scacerer. But yer smarter than that.

  • geart vid....great band

  • Are they in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? If not, it is a travesty!!!

  • mark andes was ann wilson's boyfreind in the 80's

  • Major League Baseball had a "Veterans' Committee" who was assigned the task of finding players who were overlooked for the Hall of Fame. Rock and Roll needs such a committee, who should put Spirit in the Hall.

  • @jwmellott Spirit and Roger Maris !

  • @burlingtonbill1 Roger Maris isn't in the Hall of Fame??

He played a mean bass guitar!!!!!!!

  • bEUATIFUL.

  • Great presentation of a great song.

  • Yes a favorite- like the images, nice

  • nice work.

  • drwoe Hell Yeah this holds up after 30 plenty years, AND I am fairly certain Humans will be rockin' out to it 30 plenty years from today! Thanks for the upload and reminding me what a great band Spirit was, You Tube, as always, thanks for the power and the space, long may Spirit ROCK ON! P.S. Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus was a veritable dyed in the wool Classic!

  • love this ! mark andes went on to become ann wilson's boyfriend while in heart

  • "You ave the world at your fingertips....."

  • Thanks, memories of micro dot and a micro bus to Jacksonville.

  • @dexter3732 well ah right amen in the dots hahahaha

  • GREAT ALBUM!!! Thank you for posting this. Nice audio quality, too.

  • Prelude-Nothin' To Hide - Spirit [California] - 1970 - "Their FINEST contribution. MELODIC then psychedelic-rock." - Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus-1996. NOTE: Although this has the reputation of being their most far-out album, it actually contains the most disciplined songwriting and playing of the original lineup, cutting back on some of the drifting and offering some of their more melodic tunes.

  • great job on the vid.......but way wicked huge slide guitar work! the best days of rock!

  • I saw them at the Michigan Palace in Detroit in 73. Just another cool memory.

  • Still one of the best LP's ever made. Classic. Thanks for posting.

  • pleased to discover that the cyborgs from the future have the same taste in music... their superior mental capacity, as evidenced by their crystaline skull structures, lends credence to the theory that what little civilization we do have is a direct result of interaction with superior intellects from the stars... or maybe a puff or two of the forbidden?

  • thanks for posting this

  • pretty much my fav Spirit song, along with Mechanical World.

  • First got into this in 1972 when I was 17. With headphones on and loud, you can hear someone say "F***in hell" at 1.56. Not heard it since about 1975, but I knew the exact moment when that happens - me and my mates played it an awful lot then - and it's still "f***ing good"

  • yes your is no disgrace--------somehow they zoom/diisolve/???????somehow it always works.....and i know artainment- thelightfreeedom party

  • you absolutely are a cool dude to know these guys--- watch how YES does there videos....old style -huge payoff

  • I forgot to say that my videos's images are searched from the Web based on words in lyrics, not creative photos taken personally like yours. That is a much more monumental and "true artist" thing you do. Cheers.

  • Fantastic! Thanks a lot for putting this up. I also do image-streams of stills to songs that came out before music videos, but the photos/images are synced to the lyrics and tempo. Please see my Channel for the video "Genesis - Stagnation - Live at Solihull, England 1972"

  • Randy California was the first rocker in the Rock & Roll genre to perfect Feedback Guitar. What a ,master musician

  • Lov it great video!

  • Finest Kind

  • in the 20 best albums in history of rock!!!!

  • dude ur download is skippin...

  • Wonderful video to one of my favorite songs. Chris

  • Brings me back to 12th grade in HS, blacklights, patchouli insense & just hanging

  • To Lukemanify : I can tell you that Spirit was singing about ecology lonnng before it fashionable. There was a trippy , happy, bouyant feel to their songs. I saw them at a small venue in KC in 1985 & they were so accessable to the crowd .This is gonna blow your mind : They actualy formed a receiving line so that everyone in the crowd could shake hands and briefly chat with Randy, Ed , & the other members. Founder Randy (California) Wolfe (or Wolf) spent his 15th summer jamming with Jimi Hendrix

  • One of my all-time favorite albums....still holds up today

  • Loved this album since i was 11 in '71. Doesn't blow my mind any less 4 decades later.

  • I remember everyone carrying their copy of this album around in high school.

We would discuss it whenever we weren't caught in an endless loop of reciting Firesign Theatre.

We're married to the same bride......

  • Im still here, and rocking.

  • This was great album I also liked the one with mechanical world

  • Must be some old timers like me out there, I saw them in 73.

  • @notlazy99 >>>>>Ha ha aha !!! yeah...

  • @notlazy99 Yeah, I'm very much still a fan, saw them at the Atlanta Pop Festival, summer '70, and they were incredible! I lived for a little while next door to their drummer Ed, in Topanga, & would hear them rehearsing the Clear album...

  • please tell me about it. Saw them on tv in the late seventies got a fef albums cheap in the 80's and forgot the band. Got Ferguson solos somewhere and Potatoland which seems to be something no one else remembers.

  • @lukemanify I remember Potatoland...got that ,Futureshock and 12 Dreams on vinyl frm way back in the day :)

  • LOVE IT!!

    :)

    +8

  • wow very good all of spirit college days hall of fame saw jay ferguson at wiu / ill. 1979

  • My brother in law turned me on to this great album! So many good songs! Rock on, Spirit.

  • We're married to the same wife...

the bride always looks like a pump- we'll just have to cut down her gallon...

  • Summer of 1982 I was 14 when my much older cousin put this album on for me and asked me to guess the artist. From the first note of this song I was hooked. It has been by my side ever since. A definite desert-island disc for me. Oh yeah...I guessed Traffic.

  • I first heard Spirit in 1971 when I was 12. I bought this album and the rest is history

  • Yes, this is one of my most favorite albums of all time. This video is done quite well drwoe. Thank you. Very nice.

  • @sue726b I first heard it a couple of years later when I was about 14. I was 12 in '71 also. Great songs!

  • @sue726b Same here...timeless!!!!!

  • @sue726b Same here...timeless!!!!!

  • Yeah, I grew up with this material and much like it, as well as the band 'Flock' and very early 'Mountain,' (Climbing) much of it from the 1st compilation albums of Rock Machine, @I love You, and 'Turns you on' both of which brought much early US material to the UK.

    Thanks for posting

  • I saw Spirit in Houston, TX at a venue called Liberty Hall, musta been 74ish? Randy tore it up that nite! Strangely enough, he was dressed just like Jimi would've dressed. He was sporting an Afro, bandanna head band and all. Great, great show. Liberty Hall was torn down justa few later.

Spirit's music is almost timeless and holds up perfectly after all these years. Great great band.

  • Are you from Portland?

  • i was dating a DJ, who gave me lots of records, including this one...I was 13, he was 21...great relationship. I still think of him when I play this record. Love ya Steve.

  • Hard to believe it's been 39 years since Vinny Alongis turned me onto this band...and particularly this album. I've prolly owned at least at dozen copies of this collection in one media form or another...including 8-track. I still have two unopened Sardonicus albums sitting among the other classics of that era. I guess that gives away my feelings about this treasure.

No doubt this collection is one of the best musical recordings ever released.

    Merry Christmas!!!

  • without a doubt one of the greatests albums of all time. Sadly, its a forgotten gem. Every song on this album is great

  • Have you purchased time circle? It's an expanded greatest hits collection. Really great.

  • I try to stay away from the "greatest hits" stuff, because 12 dreams was a concept album as were most great LP's of that era. But I'm sure it's a great album nonetheless becasuse the band was so damn good.

  • I saw a interview with Randy C.Prelude was a song he wrote to the band hwne they realized they were going to soon break up

  • Well done video, and of course a great song, but what does it mean? Nothing to hide, married to the same bride?

  • reverse polygamy perhaps? LOL

  • @westpalmscott, I looked up the lyrics and I can't figure it out, "she eats away from inside". A very nasty bride.

  • It's all subjective i guess Some.of their songs were a bit cryptic like this one while others were right to the point

  • One of the greatest rock albums ever made.

  • Almost forgot how awesome this band was. Listening to them was a musical flashback for me. When I was a kid my hippie parents banned tv but we could listen to any music we wanted and Dr. Sardonicus was always a favorite. Back then Detroit had better radio stations like WABX and you could hear this band on the radio, I cant remember the last time I heard them over commercial airwaves

  • Randy California inspired me to learn the guitar (properly, I had never heard anything like him before). I am glad he did, he was such a fun guy to listen to. Him and Ed Cassidy kicked my ass musically!

  • @zzbin: OK, zz, you have to know the answer to this one: What's the connection between Randy (not his real name of course) and some dude from Grennich Village in 1966? No fair Google Searcing, either! Actually the Village dude really liked Randy, and wanted to keep him, but the Village guy was easily influenced by his European management--and money at the time.

  • That would be J. A. H DonARen1950??? BTW, if you ever find any recordings of Jimmy James and The Blue Flames scream at me!

  • Bingo Cleo, Jimi it is! There have been rumors of very crude reel-to-reel recordings of JJ & the Blue Flames for years--but rumors is what they are. For the most part Jimi hated the early stuff--he was such a perfectionist. Mr. California picked up a lot of early Hendrix technique--and Jimi was always glad to show technique, and he admired ability. But any guitarist will tell you it is a bit difficult to copy a truly right-handed person (as Jimi was) who purposely played lefty for effect.

  • Over the years I've collected all of the boot's I can find of Jimi '66 and on. Around 125 CD-Rs some dual album or "long Play". Thru collecting the boots I've met many other Jimi fanatics. Don't think I've ever heard before about Jimi being a ritey. Thanx man, got something new to search for this evening about Jimi.

Without Jimi I don't think Randy would have been the same guitarist. But if he would've actually joined EXP, Spirit would've never been the same or even formed in the 1st place.

  • es extraño y dificil conseguir musica de esta banda y saber que son la base del rock psycodelico

    i like soldier

  • Spirit was a truly original band and Dr Sardinicus is one of the greats from this era. It still holds up really well. I wore this album out on vinyl. Thanks for posting this

  • Agreed 2 LP's now on cd. Never will get old!

  • Like jumping into and riding a time machine. College memories. Pretty dim now, but clearer after hearing this.

  • Great music, brilliant video!!!

  • God the memories of 30 + years...love it

  • One of my absolute alltime favorite albums ever. The band is very creative in the studio and Randy California is way under-rated in my view.

  • My oldest brother played this album constantly, which I happened to know because I always listened!!! THX for posting this, what great memories!

  • Thanks for posting this. Hadn't heard it in a lonnng time.

  • Buy all 4 of the 1st 4 LP's on CD - bonus tracks on all!!! I saw them live in San Diego in 1970 or 1971 - Great live band!!!

  • I don't have a vote for the R&R Hall of Fame

If I didn' Spirit would get one vote

  • seems to be a little odd this album.

  • The Past Is Over .

    Jet stars

    top ten

    except you want to dance

    we got nothing to hide

  • A couple of good but unknown Spirit tunes:

    Poor Richard

    It Shall Be

  • Wow, Thanks. I forgot how much I liked this band. Now I have to buy the CDs.

  • If you're gonna buy one, try Time Circle-- it's a greatest hits CD.

  • way2waky: I thought this song was lost forever - THANKS, MAN!

  • Wow man, I used to have this album and I just loved it. Gotta look for it on CD now. It has been a long time since I have heard it. Thanks for the memories man.

Awesome, Awesome post. 5 stared and faved.

    Peace bro~~~~Rod

  • So Cool When That Happens You Are Most Welcome

  • One of your coolest shares man. I had this album as a teen and loved it.

    Peace~~Rod

  • I Hope I Have Been Jogg'n The Brain Loose With The Past Few Uploads

  • Beautiful Video

    GR8 share Way2Waky

  • OBTW~~ Gorgeous photos!!

  • A very beautiful 5* vid and song......

    thanks for making this GEM!!

  • I Think The Single Off This Record

Natures Way Was Not The Best Song

But Man Did I Whare This Record Out

    Great Post!

  • OH ! YEA ! This albums been waitin on my shelf for me to play- long time no play ! thanks for the share Waky ! ***** !

  • Nice share.......you are my best!! :) :) :)

  • 'back in the day'. great share! thx!

  • Right. But this album was not about singles. It was an album to listen to all the way through and appreciate it as a whole piece. Some albums are like that, you can't really pick out a single.

  • Your So Right Like Abbey Roads

2nd Side Each Song Did Flow Into Each

Other And As A Whole This Record Is A Masterpiece But Many People I Know Only Know The Song Natures Way As Being The Spirit Signiture I Think Far From It!!!

  • "I Got A Line On You" was a big AM radio hit here in Los Angeles back in the day. "Nature's Way" was more of an FM radio hit. The "Twelve Dreams...." album reminds me of my high school Art class. The teacher had a record player and kids could bring in albums to listen to. One of the albums that got played a lot was Spirit's "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus".

  • Thats A Trip We Had Like The Same Teacher I Had A Geography Teacher

Mr Thorp We Could Bring Records

I Brought "Remember the future" It Was Requiered To Remain In Class Until

    Sommer Break

But I Really Remember Lynared Skinner's

Pronounced As The Top Pick In Our Class

    Great Story

  • That is 4 minutes of mind blowing music. And that's just the first track on the album!Randy - you were a genius - we are not worthy!

  • camping out and partying in 76 was jamming out to spirit and this song. All of sudden we notice the fire and police dept heading up the only road to the camp site. We took off running in the woods singing what else but WE HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE. Great album RIP Randy California

  • This is the beginning of the greatest concept album of all time. Only the Amboy Dukes Journey to the Center of the Mind comes close. What a great group of musicians and wow lyrics!

  • somewhere the zombies 'the odessey and the oracle', the who 'tommy' and 'quadrophenia', the kinks 'arthur,' and 'village green' husker du 'zen arcade' , NIN 'downward spiral', 'the replacements 'tim' ect want to argue you.... the list goes on and on.

this is a sublime album though. one of my favorites.

  • This is one of the all time great headphone albums. Special effects and buried hidden sounds underneath the tracks. This band was on a mission to record one of the best LP's of its era and they succeeded. It is so sad that this recording didn't push Spirit to commercial success. The other Spirit recordings are good, but this record was CLASSIC with a capital C. I think on this record RC was playing as creatively as Hendrix although with far less extended instrumentation. Cosmic soul!

  • You have the world at your fingertips

No one can make it better than you

You have the world at your fingertips

But see what you've done to the rain and the sun

So many changes have all just begun, to reap

    I know you're asleep

    Wake Up

  • Very good. Any clue on the lyrics?

    Swastikas stuck in your ear...
