too bad some idiot @ Rolling Stone Mag trashed this album in a review and the band fell apart ..later incarnations basically sucked and their live performances were horrid!... unable to duplicate this studio sound live and Ferguson and California were never to reunite again!
I think I'm the #1 Spirit head in the world. Saw the band 4 times. Same thing happened to me. I heard the 1st spirit album as a kid and was hooked ever since.
Man, this is the real deal. I graduated high school in 1969 and by 1970 I was a full blown Spirit head. Gimme a small break, I'm from Ala-freaking-bama. One of the best bands of all time!
Many times played and many times high. How else do you bear the misery of urban life on the streets of NJ in 69? I played this for my friends in the basement on a stereo connected hrough my Fender Bassman. Those were the days. 17 years old in 70 with all shit breakin loose. draft cards four finger counts MD 2020 and a full breakfast of great music from the 12 Dreams
Wow, how close to my own experince, also in my basement, the gathering place for all the 'heads,' only we played all our stuff on a stereo connected to a Marshall amp.
Only 14 at the time, but already well versed in some of the greatest music being put out then, and up to this date. We don't have those parties these day, but we still have the music, and the very fond memories.
CSNY, Helpless, can't WAIT to hear from you. No limp, uncaring handshake here. Rich, powerful 'moguls' as they call them, are plotting your denuding by degrees as the roles get more and more scacerer. But yer smarter than that.

Thanks for the upload and reminding me what a great band Spirit was, You Tube, as always, thanks for the power and the space, long may Spirit ROCK ON! P.S. Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus was a veritable dyed in the wool Classic!
Prelude-Nothin' To Hide - Spirit [California] - 1970 - "Their FINEST contribution. MELODIC then psychedelic-rock." - Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus-1996. NOTE: Although this has the reputation of being their most far-out album, it actually contains the most disciplined songwriting and playing of the original lineup, cutting back on some of the drifting and offering some of their more melodic tunes.
pleased to discover that the cyborgs from the future have the same taste in music... their superior mental capacity, as evidenced by their crystaline skull structures, lends credence to the theory that what little civilization we do have is a direct result of interaction with superior intellects from the stars... or maybe a puff or two of the forbidden?
First got into this in 1972 when I was 17. With headphones on and loud, you can hear someone say "F***in hell" at 1.56. Not heard it since about 1975, but I knew the exact moment when that happens - me and my mates played it an awful lot then - and it's still "f***ing good"
I forgot to say that my videos's images are searched from the Web based on words in lyrics, not creative photos taken personally like yours. That is a much more monumental and "true artist" thing you do. Cheers.
Fantastic! Thanks a lot for putting this up. I also do image-streams of stills to songs that came out before music videos, but the photos/images are synced to the lyrics and tempo. Please see my Channel for the video "Genesis - Stagnation - Live at Solihull, England 1972"
To Lukemanify : I can tell you that Spirit was singing about ecology lonnng before it fashionable. There was a trippy , happy, bouyant feel to their songs. I saw them at a small venue in KC in 1985 & they were so accessable to the crowd .This is gonna blow your mind : They actualy formed a receiving line so that everyone in the crowd could shake hands and briefly chat with Randy, Ed , & the other members. Founder Randy (California) Wolfe (or Wolf) spent his 15th summer jamming with Jimi Hendrix
@notlazy99 Yeah, I'm very much still a fan, saw them at the Atlanta Pop Festival, summer '70, and they were incredible! I lived for a little while next door to their drummer Ed, in Topanga, & would hear them rehearsing the Clear album...
please tell me about it. Saw them on tv in the late seventies got a fef albums cheap in the 80's and forgot the band. Got Ferguson solos somewhere and Potatoland which seems to be something no one else remembers.
Summer of 1982 I was 14 when my much older cousin put this album on for me and asked me to guess the artist. From the first note of this song I was hooked. It has been by my side ever since. A definite desert-island disc for me. Oh yeah...I guessed Traffic.
Yeah, I grew up with this material and much like it, as well as the band 'Flock' and very early 'Mountain,' (Climbing) much of it from the 1st compilation albums of Rock Machine, @I love You, and 'Turns you on' both of which brought much early US material to the UK.
I saw Spirit in Houston, TX at a venue called Liberty Hall, musta been 74ish? Randy tore it up that nite! Strangely enough, he was dressed just like Jimi would've dressed. He was sporting an Afro, bandanna head band and all. Great, great show. Liberty Hall was torn down justa few later.
Spirit's music is almost timeless and holds up perfectly after all these years. Great great band.
i was dating a DJ, who gave me lots of records, including this one...I was 13, he was 21...great relationship. I still think of him when I play this record. Love ya Steve.
Hard to believe it's been 39 years since Vinny Alongis turned me onto this band...and particularly this album. I've prolly owned at least at dozen copies of this collection in one media form or another...including 8-track. I still have two unopened Sardonicus albums sitting among the other classics of that era. I guess that gives away my feelings about this treasure.
No doubt this collection is one of the best musical recordings ever released.
I try to stay away from the "greatest hits" stuff, because 12 dreams was a concept album as were most great LP's of that era. But I'm sure it's a great album nonetheless becasuse the band was so damn good.
Almost forgot how awesome this band was. Listening to them was a musical flashback for me. When I was a kid my hippie parents banned tv but we could listen to any music we wanted and Dr. Sardonicus was always a favorite. Back then Detroit had better radio stations like WABX and you could hear this band on the radio, I cant remember the last time I heard them over commercial airwaves
Randy California inspired me to learn the guitar (properly, I had never heard anything like him before). I am glad he did, he was such a fun guy to listen to. Him and Ed Cassidy kicked my ass musically!
@zzbin: OK, zz, you have to know the answer to this one: What's the connection between Randy (not his real name of course) and some dude from Grennich Village in 1966? No fair Google Searcing, either! Actually the Village dude really liked Randy, and wanted to keep him, but the Village guy was easily influenced by his European management--and money at the time.
Bingo Cleo, Jimi it is! There have been rumors of very crude reel-to-reel recordings of JJ & the Blue Flames for years--but rumors is what they are. For the most part Jimi hated the early stuff--he was such a perfectionist. Mr. California picked up a lot of early Hendrix technique--and Jimi was always glad to show technique, and he admired ability. But any guitarist will tell you it is a bit difficult to copy a truly right-handed person (as Jimi was) who purposely played lefty for effect.
Over the years I've collected all of the boot's I can find of Jimi '66 and on. Around 125 CD-Rs some dual album or "long Play". Thru collecting the boots I've met many other Jimi fanatics. Don't think I've ever heard before about Jimi being a ritey. Thanx man, got something new to search for this evening about Jimi.
Without Jimi I don't think Randy would have been the same guitarist. But if he would've actually joined EXP, Spirit would've never been the same or even formed in the 1st place.
Spirit was a truly original band and Dr Sardinicus is one of the greats from this era. It still holds up really well. I wore this album out on vinyl. Thanks for posting this
Wow man, I used to have this album and I just loved it. Gotta look for it on CD now. It has been a long time since I have heard it. Thanks for the memories man.
Right. But this album was not about singles. It was an album to listen to all the way through and appreciate it as a whole piece. Some albums are like that, you can't really pick out a single.
Other And As A Whole This Record Is A Masterpiece But Many People I Know Only Know The Song Natures Way As Being The Spirit Signiture I Think Far From It!!!
"I Got A Line On You" was a big AM radio hit here in Los Angeles back in the day. "Nature's Way" was more of an FM radio hit. The "Twelve Dreams...." album reminds me of my high school Art class. The teacher had a record player and kids could bring in albums to listen to. One of the albums that got played a lot was Spirit's "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus".
camping out and partying in 76 was jamming out to spirit and this song. All of sudden we notice the fire and police dept heading up the only road to the camp site. We took off running in the woods singing what else but WE HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE. Great album RIP Randy California
This is the beginning of the greatest concept album of all time. Only the Amboy Dukes Journey to the Center of the Mind comes close. What a great group of musicians and wow lyrics!
somewhere the zombies 'the odessey and the oracle', the who 'tommy' and 'quadrophenia', the kinks 'arthur,' and 'village green' husker du 'zen arcade' , NIN 'downward spiral', 'the replacements 'tim' ect want to argue you.... the list goes on and on.
this is a sublime album though. one of my favorites.
This is one of the all time great headphone albums. Special effects and buried hidden sounds underneath the tracks. This band was on a mission to record one of the best LP's of its era and they succeeded. It is so sad that this recording didn't push Spirit to commercial success. The other Spirit recordings are good, but this record was CLASSIC with a capital C. I think on this record RC was playing as creatively as Hendrix although with far less extended instrumentation. Cosmic soul!
too bad some idiot @ Rolling Stone Mag trashed this album in a review and the band fell apart ..later incarnations basically sucked and their live performances were horrid!... unable to duplicate this studio sound live and Ferguson and California were never to reunite again!

That is 4 minutes of mind blowing music. And that's just the first track on the album!Randy - you were a genius - we are not worthy!

camping out and partying in 76 was jamming out to spirit and this song.

You have the world at your fingertips
No one can make it better than you
You have the world at your fingertips
But see what you've done to the rain and the sun
So many changes have all just begun, to reap
I know you're asleep
Wake Up
