  • I don't understand why they play earth's music/quotes when the video is so far past earth.......

  • @nerf1628 Older stuff would make it further out, DUH!

  • what'ever ....

  • Must be great to get away from people and all the bullshit that comes with them

  • 1:52 Pillars of Creation RIP

  • I feel so sorry for Jodie Foster when they're criticising her for believing that she had an experience with the 'Vegans'. They tell her that she has no evidential proof and that in fact, all evidence is to the contrary, they quote Occam's Razor and conclude that she was delusional. And yet, throughout the whole film they blast on about God, forcing her to surrender her position for the original contact attempt because she's an atheist. It goes to show the hypocrisy of religion!

  • I love love love this film.

  • If 1997 was when the aliens receive the 1936 video of Hitler, the aliens should receive the first porn from earth in a few more years.

  • And, even for 1997, the themes of this film feel awfully subversive for an American Hollywood film. Don't remember seeing anything so overtly challenging Christianity before. And of course it is always fun to think of films with religious themes like Signs, which is awful. I mean really, God destroys much of the planet so one guy can regain his faith...

  • Great scene! While the other poster is probably joking, this movie really was very influential in distancing myself from religion and admiring the beauty of the universe in a different way. I was already moving in that direction, but I think I saw this film when I was about 11 years old, and it was pretty amazing to me at the time. I realized how little sense the religious character's arguments made to me even though the resonated with believers. Still a movie I enjoy.

  • i dislike the video just because of all that stupid comments in here

  • @totzstangolo then i forgive you then.

  • Replace the audio of this with "onward to the edge" by Melody-sheep , it syncs up perfectly!!!

  • Pillars of Creation are somewhere else. Oh, they dont exist nowadays too. Nice vid.

  • so i got a question how can you look at something from the outside if you're in the inside its a matter of perspective people. never rule out anything unless you are sure about it not being true just call me if you got the whole universe figure out alright.Never count your chickens before you're eggs hatch.shit you havent gone to the nearest planet from earth yet youre ruling out all the possibilities

  • The Argument from Human Insignificance :

    (a) If the deity described in the Bible were to exist, then it would be expected that humans occupy some significant place in the universe.

    (b) But, both from the standpoint of space and from the standpoint of time, humans do not occupy any significant place in the universe.

    (c) Hence, God, as defined by Bible probably does not exist.

  • Eye of god at 2:58. turns out god is just a little girl

  • my girlfriend asked me what i saw in her... i showed her this video

  • Do you all remember Aristoteles? He said that our planet is in the centre of our solar system. Well, we found out we weren't. Now we have a crazy theory that our planet is the only one, note only one in the universe with organisms. Soon we'll find out we're not the only ones either.

  • @SportGeneration you know it all, huh?

  • I know we are not the only ones and God is still real. I'm just not religious anymore, just spiritual. God made religions so people stop killing each other and be scared. LOL

  • @xxdufffxx and it failed big time

  • The distances and scales seem to be all wrong.

  • EVERYBODY!!!!! watch this video. after you do, youll see how we are insignificant. i refuse to believe we are the only ones here. if so, its a giant waste of space. if there is a god, he had alot of side projects.

  • The sound of silence

  • muahaha, i wonder after viewing this video , who still believe that we are alone in the univers :p

  • @banderastube Some people, even after seeing this video, will believe we are the only life in the universe. They're stubborn and short minded :D

The sheer size of the universe is mind boggling, and pretty amazing as well!!

  • @NL4Grinder The question isn't if we are the only life in the universe - we are most assuredly not - but whether there is other intelligent life in the universe. And not just intelligence, but 'human intelligence'. Of all the billions of species on this planet, we are the only ones which experience the world in the way we do. And through the use of psychoactive drugs we can even break THAT down. It seems there are a near infinite number of ways to perceive reality... (cont.)

  • @NL4Grinder And our particular form of intelligence and the way we experience reality was shaped by a very specific evolutionary pathway. I think it is safe to say that the chances of other life developing in a way similar to us and developing intelligence in a manner similar to ours (such that we could communicate ideas in a meaningful way) is very, very slim. Not impossible, but highly unlikely. Which isn't to say that elephants and dolphins etc. aren't smart... (cont.)

  • @NL4Grinder Just that they aren't smart in ways we really care about. I think we will need to find many millions of species of this kind of intelligence before we ever find one like us, or more advanced.

  • @NL4Grinder The whole premise of intelligent alien life really rests on the fallacious assumption that human-style intelligence is an evolutionary end-game - the direction in which all species are evolving. It isn't.

  • Good movie. The book was much better.

  • I must have seen this intro 20+ times. And it still fascinates me! The film ain't half bad either! Maybe, if we get all those capitalist fat cats and (w)bankers, fundamentalist religious nutters, the general misinformed public, two faced politicians of course and the usual scum of Humanity; like your average racist or misogynist to watch this clip over and over again, until the message hits home, loud and clear! Then maybe, JUST maybe, our Species could usher in a New Age for all Humankind ;-)

  • This video changes mind. Everything is a realistic virtual game played by big real you. Believe it and became free. Find your role in this game named life and win!

  • we are a fraction of a dot.

  • watch this to "becoming one" avatar soundtrack

  • I Love It

  • この映画、大好き。もう一回見たいな〜 ムルヒャ〜♪

  • Guys, just imagine for one minute.. if you were floating in space all alone, and the sun, earth's sun.. is visible but not other planets, nothing to hold onto, so that means you're far away.. what are you gonna do? You'll just float there forever.. or at least till you die.. you can't reach earth anymore.. alone.

  • this video made me question my religion and quit my job

  • 0:21 Thumbs up if you hear a glimpse of ''I Ran So Far Away'' and enjoyed the few seconds of musical harmony.

  • kuuuuuhhh-leeeeeeeeeeannnnnn :D

  • HAHAHA xD

earth is a tiny pice of SHIT!

    xDD

  • Remember watching this when i was 6 and it was something id never forget

  • WHAT IF SHE RUBS HER EYE. EVERYONE IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE WOULD DIE! or if someone stabbed her

  • So beautiful!! We are just..nothing!

  • Master of the World.

  • turn the audio off, and listen to "time, from hans zimmer" while you see this ;)

  • @TheMarksman17 I love you.

  • @TheMarksman17 omg amazing

  • windows should update its screensaver

  • uhm, lady, you got there something in your eye....

  • this is pensacola, fl. come back?

  • @DubWhrore simple old son

a PULSAR kicks out so much power that it swamps the background radiation

literly blasting it's way through, now compair that to the pitiable amount of power from an earth bound transmitter...like i said,it's a shame that after only a light year or so,our transmissions fade out into the general back ground mishmash

  • This kinda reminds me of the Simpsons intro i watched, Thumbs up if it reminds you to!

  • If Audio from the 1920s and 30s are barely arriving where Pluto is at, imagine if religion wouldnt have gotten in the way back in the Dark Ages, maybe the scientist back then could have invented all the stuff that was invented in the 20th century and all the audio from back then would probably be leaving the Galaxy already and we would be a little more advance that we are now.

  • @MMVIIIVMM i always thought religion was one of the reason learning, writing and technology survived at all in the dark ages. After the fall of the Romans, barbarians razed just about every cultural and technological advancement to the ground and only the only people who could read, speak latin, do math etc were monks. Hell, the church pretty much sponsored the Renaissance artists and inventors..... I'm confused

  • @12monkeys55555 EM radiation Doppler shifts, which causes it's wavelength to decrease or increase depending on the velocity of movement of the source (usually a star or a galaxy), but you can still clearly observe it. This guy is talking out of his arsehole evidently. But if it was the case, you'd still be able to see a decay over short distances which you could extrapolate for long distances, so it wouldn't be completely implausible IF EM radiation randomly decayed in such a manner.

  • @r1c0ch3t211 Thanks. Kinda forgot about speed shift.

  • I've seen this footage so many times in other videos, with various bits of music trying to tell us how we should feel.

I havn't seen Contact, so this is the first time I saw it in silence.

It was more terrifying, the switch from our signals, to nothing. Not terrifying, but just..indescribable, we simply do NOT exist in almost all the universe, and visually being there, is just too overwhelming to comprehend.

  • DId I hear some Nazi footage there ?

  • @IGOTTHESHAKESBAD Just wait, in a few thousand years some aliens show up to help us fight Hitler ... d'oh!

  • there will never be a human mind understanding those sizes

  • @erwinfummel Yes there are tens of thousands of human minds that can comprehend those distances, there called astro-physicists and cosmologists... and don't forget, quantum physicists!

  • @12monkeys55555

Yes. In numbers my friend. In numbers.

  • What is the structure revealed after the milkyway is revealed (the black and white sphere with a dark circle around it, seen at 2:32) I don't think it's a galaxy cluster because that structure is too uniform. Is it showing the theoretical multiverse?

    SOMEONE TELL ME!!!!!!

  • @xandermful No, it's not a multiverse, not even remotely close. What you were looking at was a galaxy, a compact one at that. The glow was star light gathering around the black hole at it's center and dark ring is dense gas that visable light can't pass through.

  • People mute this video then listen to Deadmau5 Hybrid and honestly..........WOW

  • It's full of inaccuracies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Udany147 That's true, the technical problems with the way the light is reflected off the planets always throws me - I mean the initial zoom out from the earth shows that they didn't set the light source up at infinity as they should have - then later on the sun disappears behind Saturn but you can still see the crescent. Still its a cool scene.

  • Universe For The Win !!!

  • 1:15 is that the Oort cloud?

  • @BeAsTm0aD The Ort cloud is a bunch of comet like structures forming a bubble around our solar system. It's the boundry between space and interstellar space.

  • pause this video at the beginning, and look up "the escapist" by coldplay. let that song play while you watch this one.

  • very very cool intro. i like contact, its one of my favs

  • beautiful!

  • This is why space exploration fascinates me. Unlimited things to discover and find

  • No wonder eye surgeons get paid so much, each time they perform they are basically cutting up an entire universe. lol

  • Someone seriously needs to edit this backwards. It would look way better if it was zooming in towards earth....

  • beautiful.the end bit is interesting too, cause if u really think about it theres a whole 'universe' in the human body alone.all they millions of dfferent cells, bacteria, atoms etc working away constantly.our body looks like a universe to a single bacteria.so u wonder if the universe is just a pin prick in a whole ocean of universes that goes on forever.mind blowing.

  • This is a humbling moment to observe but yet hopeful in a way. Carl Sagan's word's still & will ring true beyond our time about how other civilizations will judge us. "You humans are an interesting species...capable of such beautiful dreams, AND such horrific nightmares." How long can we as a species go down this road of self destruction and mayhem?. Can we become better? I wonder?

  • some people think VHF signals get totally destroyed by the noise out beyond Pluto, therefore being impossible to detect.. not strictly true! as the signal speads out the further away it is from earth, a radio telescope is required, just like a normal telescope is needed to see far away things in space. the only problem is, the more distant you are, the bigger radio telescope you woud need. Being 50 light years out you would need a giant 500KM wide dish to receieve broadcasts from the 1960's!!

  • is this real?

  • @xoxoxjes absolutely !!

  • @actionreplayman07 well the reason its getting brighter is because the milkyway is not in the centre of the universe, therefore the camera was moving away from earth and "Deeper" & "Further" "INTO" the universe. It's hard to understand, I know. You just need to get a little more knowledge of the universe.

  • Earth seems to be a nice place to broadcast galactic radio on. Well, keep send the waves. I guess the aliens like it :)

  • so awesome

  • the silence of space is freaky stuff

  • ... I will no longer complain about my walk from my house to school as being too far... ever... again.

  • 27 people failed to zoom out their probs

  • I dont like that stupid idea that the universe gets brighter the furhter you go back... it is stupid.

Galaxies would not increase in number the further out, and the light from them would get get dimmer the further you go away.

In all fact, when you go so far out, it would be black.

That is actually what the universe looks like, black, not bright like this shows it.

But the vid is still good. Thumbs up!

  • Try getting a headshot from that distance with a sniper rifle.

  • This zoomout is one of my favourite scenes. It's not accurate as it goes through time faster than it does through space, but everyone understands the idea of it.

  • nice

  • This is probably my favorite thing to toke along to.

  • who ever did these graphics is really good! perfect!

  • who ever did these graphics is really good!

  • 1:50, is anyone else seeing a girl holding a dog?

  • Wow... intense. Love it :)

  • @INTvByInosh The first chapters of Genesis are basically a terraforming and colonization account of this neighborhood in space. Why people think it covers the far reaches of space or its "creation ex nihilo" I fail to understand. If there were a book to cover all such proceedings in the "universe", you wouldn't be able to fit the pages on earth.

  • I think I saw the Star Wars galaxy.

  • My only wish is to see all this with my own eyes.

  • Greatest movie intro ever! Smart movie.

  • Greatest movie intro ever!

  • the universe is 3 minutes long.

  • @jason0813 the zoom gets faster and faster, you should've noticed that ;)

  • @lukeskywalkerlol nah.. im too dense.

  • damn universe is big

  • This was truly amazing! it really shows how small we are and that were not so tough after all, a very humbling experience. One more thing Gamma rays travel faster than radio waves and are less disrupted by stellar noise so it's possible to send a message and possibly receive one back in our lifetime.

  • Thumbs up if vSide brought you here!

  • "'I'm significant!' Screamed the dust speck."

    -Calvin, Calvin and Hobbes.

  • this truly shows how insignificant we are....kind of scary.

  • @jptDrEaMeR So why does it zoom out and show a small human child containing all that vastness? Size isn't everything. Intelligence is the real power of the universe.

  • Folks, set your problems aside for just a couple of minutes and watch this video. It doesn't take long before you realize just how small you are in the grand scheme of things. Pass it on.

  • @lookwolf I try not to think about it; knowing that anything I do will eventually be erased from history depresses me. I would love to experience the sights in this video for myself. I won't, but it doesn't stop me from dreaming.

  • 2:56 proves god is women!

  • Makes you think... doesn't it! But, when i do that i just get a headache....

  • What? what happened to Uranus and Neptune?

  • @21centuryg i guess the planets were not aligned..

  • I have never felt so small

  • makes you think about god role and life and the universe.

  • @CaptainViral84 Trollin

  • 1:28 it's a bear family

  • Beautiful stuff!

I wish we as dumb pieces of human sh*te could just put down our iphones and laptops for just a second and let this footage sink in.

You can take the biggest problem in your life right now and zoom it out... if you still find yourself whinging and moaning, you obviously are missing the plot.

  • @ToniEvora one of the best comments I've seen on Youtube

  • @ToniEvora

Oh so we can't have problems because the universe is so large thus making us so insignificant!? I'm pretty sure the problems people are having are huge in their own little universes.

  • @DoubleDowner I never said we can't have problems. What I mean is that we all have the ability to choose how we deal with them and I think we often choose the little narrow path by default.

If you want to throw a massive fit every time you encounter trouble, then you go right ahead. Just recognize that there are different perspectives concerning your problems. Why not choose a higher perspective where you can play your problem down and get a smile back on your face as soon as possible?

  • @ToniEvora

hmmm..... I think you're being rather general..but I like your positive attitude ! people like you balance out the bitter fucks like me ! keep spreading the love

  • @ToniEvora Contemporary music, current events, techno, pop music, rock and roll music, 1930's world war II Hitler's triumphant olympics speech, radio broadcast in the 1920's and earlier, Morse code beeping... and finally silence.with Cosmic background hiss... this is the reverse chronological order of events that occured from the day we began to "Broadcast signals." 100 years ago. So aliens living 100 light yrs away Ryt NOW, will hear the first Morse codes that we sent!! Amazing isn't it..!!

  • @ToniEvora so you say that we should turn off your laptop so we can see this? good luck watching a black screen

  • @TheCHRISintheMIX lol, good one! But I never said that, mate. I said that we should put it down and let the footage sink in and contemplate about it.

  • One of the best sci-fi movies for 60 minutes and one of the worst sci-fi disappoints 60 minutes onward... arg!

  • this is awesome i watched it not too long ago. i was wondering can i use this scene for an intro im making. just wanted to notify u. you will get credit since i will put your account in my description. plz reply

  • perfect scene.... just to show how small are you.....

  • oh my god this film is sooooo amazing.

best ever . yo and i dont wanna hear no arguements yeah

  • awsome vid!

  • They're not listening -- Still them. Shut the fuck up, mad cow cannibal humans. That means you, kangaroo-eating Kathy Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.

  • @etbella3 I LOVE MEAT ITS GOOD YUM YUM

  • -When you are everywhere, you are nowhere and when you are somewhere, you are everywhere-... Well, I know a corner of the universe you can be certain of improving and here it comes !

  • u see there is no god of the devil the univers is one things witch as good and bad in side of it on earth evil classed as devil good classed as god the bible tells us stuff about good look at it backwords its evil when u die u become one with the univers

  • We live inside some dude's eye I guess.

  • The eye in the end is a symbol of freemason. It shows that freemasons will rule the entire universe. Carl Sagan was one of the freemasons who wrote the novel on which this movie is based.

  • is that john lennon in 0:26?? anyone hear it?

  • the sad thing is that the "bubble" of radio waves coming from the earth fades out after only a few light years...so any hope of travling beoynd say 100 light years and hoping to pick up the earths first radio transmissions is sadly just a dream!

if the human race was to vanish tomorrow no body out there would even know we where here once!

  • @grahamkeithtodd Nuh Uh, I wrote my name down once in crayon, so.. You know.

  • @MrAnderson1985 that's nothing i once carved my name on a passing nun.... :-P

  • @grahamkeithtodd Probably they already know we are here so i would'nt worry about that.

  • @grahamkeithtodd So that's why lets vanish after we figure out where to lease our new home!! :) After our civilization reaches Type I status, we can control earthquakes, volcanoes, the weather, we can make clean fusion energy, where the earth has only 1 universal culture , and one common language, huge trading blocks for the entire planet.. That's the future awaiting us!!! Lets not wipe ourselves out and get snuffed out of existence.!! Lets make our lives and out tortuous evolution worthy!

  • @charlieking100 Sounds pretty swell, except the only 1 universal culture part. Variety is the spice of life and I don't want to live in a Star Wars world were we only speak one language per planet and so forth. It's not that the humanity doesn't have enough noble causes to strife for. Instead I think the problem lies in the fact that humanity takes itself far too seriously and life has become a work and a drag. Lets live, play and explore for for their own sake, I'm sure great things will follow

  • @Piitsi ...and I wish to elaborate more. I do not mean there should be one culture among the different cultures that are there in the world. Anywhere in the world, you take a picture of two people and they are instantly recognizable: Arnold Schwarzenegger and Madonna. That's the planetary culture.Hollywood. I'm talking Rap music, blue jeans.. it already is taking shape... Indian music became Indi-Pop... and so on.. and Science is the sole "Religion" if u wanna call it .

  • @Piitsi You speak your own language , But on top of that, you speak one Planetary language, probably English.... I am not a Brit or an american.. Im from Asia, and I respect all cultures in the world. But, the transition to Type I status, is the single most difficult transition in history We might not make it. we have forces of integration, but along with that, we have wars, terrorism ,stopping our transition to the Type I status. We are lucky to be born in the greatest time of this transition..

  • @charlieking100 I agree, we live in very interesting times indeed. In my view the war on terror and other global crises are part of a human psyche when we take ourselves too seriously, because of this we are driven by fear and ignorance, instead of joy and discovery. We aren't seeing the connections we all share and the vast potential that lies in all of us. If we could only see that our home is not something inside the walls we build around us, but it is the earth and the whole universe itself.

  • @grahamkeithtodd Radio waves don't deminish over distance, if it did, we wouldn't be able to see the radio spectrum from other galaxies millions of light years from us, we view this spectrum every day with radio telescopes. So sleep tight knowing that our transmissions are out there to be recieved and understood.

  • @12monkeys55555 sorry old son but radio waves do deminish over distance... it is belived that after going out about 1 light year, the signal degrades so much due to back ground radiation!

you would be lucky to make out 1 word in a 1,000

  • @grahamkeithtodd Interesting................ I've never heard that before. Since we have no probes over a light year away, how do the scientists whom you prescribe to, know of the deminishing effects of back ground radiation on radio waves?

  • @12monkeys55555 well old son the boffins say this is true..and maybe it is but like you say( and it is a very good point) how do they know?

  • @grahamkeithtodd Yes. Just because a person gets a PhD doesn't automatically make them right! Take care and have a wonderful life.

  • @12monkeys55555 sadly right now my life once again sucks in a rather big way old son,the beloved had a massive stroke back in january of this year and is in a locked in state due to the fact her brain stem is dead!

but thank you anyway for your good wishes and who knows? maybe she will beat the odds and recover! i live in hope she does

  • the end of the world is nigh

  • i guess maybe consciousness is the biggest entity of all

  • Judgment day: MAY 21, 2011

End of the world: OCT 21, 2011

    READ THE BIBLE.

"Then whosoever heareth the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if

the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head." Ezekiel 33:4

God is the Creator of everything and He will JUDGE every Human being on MAY 21, 2011. He will DESTROY EVERYTHING on OCTOBER 21, 2011, only His children will be saved from that terrible day. PRAY-BEG FOR MERCY. I warned you.

Visit my channel for more info.

  • @kirika20 the bible... oh, the book that constantly contradicts itself? wake up, god doesn't exist, he was created because the intelligence of the ancient Hebrews were not evolved enough to fend for themselves, then they created someone who should serve in exchange for protection. Not you, but I do not need anybody who tells me to do, have a long life... like a slave
