Power is generated in a baseball swing when you put your weight into the swing. I am the owner of Roscoe P. Jones Hitting College in St. Louis. I have spend many years teaching this style of hiting. When the pitch comes you put your weight into the swing and swing hard. If you're late then you needs to swing twice as hard. If you can't catch up you may need to hit the weights. Always a good idea. Peace Roscoe
@infieldcoach1 and you make money with this advice? I should move out there cause I have some bridges to sell. People are you watching this video. The swing (left), can you honestly say that that is an acceptable swing? I bet you that swing is a teaching of swing down then level to the ball. That is what is being taught by ex players who batted 170 in A ball and push on to the next kid who will bat 170 in A ball. You may not agree with rotational but this swing is not used in MLB
excellent stuff! Finally someone who looks at professional swings and realizes not to chop down on the ball. So many coaches don't understand physics and the idea that having the bat in the zone as long as possible is the key to success
The legs do not give you any power to your swing or bat speed!!!! The fundamental purpose of the legs is to balance the torso while it's swinging. If you rotate the shoulders prior to contacting the ball, you are greatly reducing your bat speed. Rotational techniques, or opening up your swing, only leads up to the bat not getting up to full speed! Just as in golf, tennis and any other sport where striking a ball with an object. Most of the pro ball players that you are profiling are workin
@smekalka I disagree... I'm teaching my daughter's softball team about hitting. The local high schools are very helpful, and they teach rotational hitting. Any hitter can agree that bat speed=power, right? The coach (who happened to win 2 gold medals with USA in the early 90's) did a little demonstration with a radar gun and a punching bag. Linear hitting- she swung 31 mph. Rotational- 36. That's a 5 mph difference. You don't have to be a physics major to see that that's a TON faster.
You hit with your hands and I will teach all my students to hit with the strong muscles of their core with the hips bringing the hands. Throw your hands and squish the bug if you like, but I strongly encourage you to get some legitimate hitting instruction that will maximize your ability to hit the baseball through time tested, big league proven rotational hitting techniques. If your instructor is giving lessons relating to hands first hitting go elsewhere. Sorry man its the facts!
Erick.......If you don't lead with your hips where does your power come from? Pitchers lead with their hips all the time. Coaches of all levels say that pitchers need to use their legs more to throw the ball faster, wouldn't that relate to hitting as well?? And if Rot. Hitting just leads to pop ups and strikeouts show me players who lead with their hands who never pop up or stirkeout.
@PinkmanBaseball.....Leading with your hands creates the least amount of energy possible. Poor Eric must not be a very good baseball player. I actually like this video although I do not agree with all of your responses below. The swing starts with the lower half and then creates torque by moving the upper half last. I wouldn't focus on the front elbow flying up during a swing. I would just focus on throwing your hands above the ball because the barrel will always be below your hands.
i hate the rotational vs linear swing stuff. both are wrong. u dont lead with your hips, you lead with your hands. if u lead with your hips, you have a long sometimes uppercut swing. you keep it short and compact with leading with your hands. slo-pitch softball players lead with their hips. a lot of the other rotational points are correct and some of the linear points are correct. if anybody teaches rotational hitting theyre just going to pop up and strikeout city.
@erickwizgod really you have facts with your comment? half of my sons team are rotational hitters and I don't see that happening. I have no issues with your comment but to say that teaching RH is an instant out is a dumbass comment....do you know that mauer, griffey, a-rod cano and a ton more in the majors are rotational hitters....now thats a fact....why dont you post your swing so we can see how it is done...
@abfive Ok I just sat here and tried to see what you are talking about that these great big league hitters have this type of swing. Do they rotate their hips? Yes. Do they rotate their shoulders? Yes. Do they let their back leg drop and shoulders lean off plane? No. Does every swing have an uppercut motion? No. Does their front hip point to the sky? No. Please look a little closer at the COMPLETE swing before saying that they are pure "rotational" hitters. Ian Kinsler YES. not many others though
@20jwink I dont think I said a lot of the things your saying, especially "pure rotational hitting" I don't know what that means, what I do know is if the head does not move forward on heal plant and the body rotates around the head, the hips lead then the shoulders then the hands that person swing would be rotational. Simple as that look up Ken Griffey and Joe Mauer they are best clips on here. If you don't see it what I'm explaining then whatever, It is what it is have a great life abfive
@abfive I completely agree with what you just said about them having the best clips and great swings. The points you make here are great. I guess I am trying to find the similarities in the swing above, which is what they are now calling a "rotational" swing and the above mentioned ball players. I think you are right about the heal plant and the description of the swing, but watch the video above carefully and then watch the Mauer swing again. Epstien style is uppercut. He calls it Rotational.
Lau changed the game in the 70/80s with the hard turf field balls were rockets so the swing down became the norm. Its what most instructors teach its all they know. Rotational Hitting is a natural swing its what we did as kids we threw the ball up and swung, try and do that throw the ball up and swing down, it goes to the ground. The swing above is core RH you cant compare a kid to a MLB player but this kid will have much better chance @ the plate, the left swing is linear and looks bad..
How does this kid swing down?you just tracked the swing through the clips and his bat is well under the yellow line maybe even a foot. And why would you have your hitters lean back that why.The basic laws for momentum doesnt follow your theory.Momentum = mass x velocity. If part of your mass is moving back and the other is trying to hit the ball forward its contradicting. The pro hitter is far less leaned back than the student is. just get your momentum going forward and get your hands to the ball
if you imagine a ferris wheel that is the best way to put it...or a merry go round, the front shoulder going back slightly, creates leverage and the plane of the bat matching the plane of the pitch. You dont need momentum necessarily to hit the ball, or better yet, your momentum should be stopped at one point so the torso can slingshot the hands around the body...if you have ever seen a pole vaulter you know that the pole has to stop in order for the athlete to vault over the bar, very similar
@PinkmanBaseball Why would you want to stop momentum? When in a swing is momentum nonexistent? So what you are saying is you want to stop all energy and momentum in order to hit a ball which has momentum accelerating at you. If you put all baseball ideas to the side, baseball is all physics. In your explanation with having zero momentum and the ball having momentum forces the hitter to have negative momentum causing in direct relation of the ball to be hit shorter and softer.
so what your saying is the body continually moves forward through the entire swing? Because if you look at ANY good/great hitter their head stays still from the point the stride foot hits the ground until the finish of the swing...you are using a lot of physics terms but not applying it to the swing, explain what parts of the body are creating the momentum...what is your response to no stride hitters? If the head is still during the swing what parts create momentum?
Actually Baseballstudent is making perfect sense with physics, it is your theory of hitting that is flawed. If you want to hit a ball 400 feet, why would you stop your swing halfway? By your theory, if you check swing (stopping momentum) the ball would still go 400 feet. And of course, a check swing doesn't produce a 400 foot ball.
nobody said to stop the swing halfway, nobody is teaching a student to check swing and expect to hit the ball 400 ft, again you are misconstuing what i am saying...WITH HITTING, the head stays still and the front shoulder goes slightly back as the hips rotate with the hands, the front knee locks out as the front shoulder goes back and that is when the hands come through to contact
@PinkmanBaseball The loading phase and the swing in its self developes momentum and kinetic energy. The body does not move forward more than an inch or two. The head does stay still, thats absolutely true. But theres has to be a continuous flow of energy and momentum throught the loading phase and swing. You simply do not stop your energy or momentum. Every hitter has some movement prior to the load phase, this developes momentum and energy. Try hitting from a dead stand still, its very tough.
@PinkmanBaseball Does a runner stop mid sprint, does a basketball player stop when shooting, does a running back stop to change direction? All athletes continue without stoppping. So when would you slow down your swing or stop completely? You transfer the enrgy from the load to the swing and then through the baseball to create a transfer of energy and momentum. EVERY MOVING OBJECT HAS KINETIC ENERGY AND MOMENTUM. This includes a baseball swing because the bat is moving.
i never said anything about stopping the hands or slowing down hands, you are putting words into my mouth to make your point....please explain to me in words wha tthe body parts do what when you hit....show me a hitter that moves his head after foot strike during the swing...YOU CANT...that is all i said, the head stops not the hands, and we are not sprinting we are hitting
@PinkmanBaseball "You dont need momentum necessarily to hit the ball, or better yet, your momentum should be stopped at one point so the torso can slingshot the hands around the body...if you have ever seen a pole vaulter you know that the pole has to stop in order for the athlete to vault over the bar, very similar" these the exact words you commented, Please i am not putting words in your mouth.
to me momentum is something that is gained over a period of time in a linear direction, my opinion....the rotational elements are what i was referring to
@PinkmanBaseball A baseball swing - Stance does not matter, all players have different stances. then theres the load. Then the hitter drives to the baseball and gets his hands past his body, with flexion in the elbows, without rotating. The weight should be concentrated on the inner thigh of the back leg. This is the contact phase with the ball. Then the hitter drives through the ball keeping the bat in the strike zone as long as possible. Then you rotate on the front part of the swing.
the hands getting past the body without rotating? You cannot make contact with the ball without rotating your body and expect to hit it well. The front shoulder has to rotate open in order to make contact with any force...this is what i was referencing when i brought up the ferris wheel/merry go round, these things rotate, much like a hitter, you can have weight transfer, stride, movement forward, etc, but at foot strike, there is rotation with the hands, hips, and shoulders
@PinkmanBaseball The reason why i have the references to other sports, such as sprinting is because the are high explosive movements, just like a baseball swing. Each require fast twitch movements. In my references i related the swing to other sports, not theme park rides such as the merry go round.
@PinkmanBaseball The head staying completely still is not exactly true. The head tilts down to see the ball hit the bat, this happens after the foot stride. So the head does move slightly. Some hitters such as Mike Piazza had much more distinct movement, he almost moved his entire head down. You cannot rotate your hands and hips at the same time because the hitter will decrease bat path in the strike zone, and have less power through contact
i was referring to the head staying still in terms of linear movement forward...once the front foot lands the head does not continue to move forward with almost all hitters...as for the hands and hips, i beg you to find me an example of hand and hips not moving together/connected
@PinkmanBaseball The boby does rotates slightly, thats absolutely true. But its a direct results of the hitter getting his hands to the ball. The rest of the body will fall into place if the batter fires his hands to the ball. Rotating the body while firing the hands to the ball, causes premature rotation. It also causes a decreased length of bat path in the strike zone. When the hips that early it causes the batter to be moving majority of his mass side to side in stead off slightly forward.
Dear PinkmanBaseball - your videos are great. Keep up the good work. Don't let the morons posting moronic comments get to you. Don't even dignify them with a response. 99% of the comments on YouTube are just from idiots who want to crap all over other people for no reason than to make themselves feel better.
@cywoods18 Dear Dummy. One of the main ideas behind matching the plane of the incoming ball is to take away the pitchers fastball. Once you do that, you have a chance to adapt to the pitches that move.
@eckstein29 yes you could have an awful swing and hit the ball and thx to composite bats, they have allowed the ball to travel greater distance. Once a wood bat is put in the hands of a hitter it all changes. Look @ Mauer and A-Rod's swing and note they are rotational hitters....there is a lot of poor teaching out there.....good luck with your swing
Great video. I've shown this video to my 12 year-old to demonstrate how important it is to keep the barrel in the hitting zone as long as possible. It's such a basic concept that gets lost with kids.
Hang around Sping training batting cages and coaches and then tell me rotational hitting is for scrubs, it's just the opposite. The Marlins,Rays,Phillies and on and on all preach rotational hitting and matching the piched ball plane. Your swing down on the ball bullcrap is for Little Leagers. Throw your hands at the ball is the kiss of death. Your core drives the swing not the other way around. A good hitter hits from the ground up.
ALL of the best pro hitters swing using Ted Williams theories...Ted Williams preached matching the plane, get your facts straight and come up with a more expansive vocab than bull$h!t...Mike Epstein was Ted Williams protege and used his theories to come up with a way to teach it...Rotational Hitting.
im a freshman in high school and base ball season starts in 2 weeks for me. one of the problems that i faced in other leagues was that im not hitting the ball as hard and as far as i want. would rotational hitting give me more power and get the ball farther?
Epstein developed the rotational swing from many sessions with Ted Williams. Power in the swing is derived from the legs...hips do indeed lead the hands...a long hands oriented swing is death once a hitter faces quality pitching. If you do not match the path of the ball with the bat, you are limited to a very small contact area. Watch Pujols to see how long his bat stays in the path of the ball...even when he is a bit late or early, he still kills the ball.
everything is perfect exceot his shoulders should be even because his swing is still looping and he'll hit fly balls. if he does this he will automatcly finish more by the hips and keep the ball in the zone longer and u can see the pro hitter has hit sholders more uprite
thats true especially for a speedy kind of guy like Juan Pierre but the instructions on this video are not geared toward hitting fly balls, their geared toward hitting high line drives, there's a big difference
How do you guys know which swing is better? Have you both tested them and seen which one works better? You guys just sit here arguing when you dont know if one swing is even better than the other
you are suppose to swing down to the ball but level through and finish high... its complicated to explain but you are swinging down to the ball but not chopping and if its done right its looks like an uppercut swing but its not
to lifeafter79: show me just one major leaguer who is on espn weekly who swings down on the baseball, im sure you think you brother hit 23HR in a season by swinging down on the ball, i can assure you that on all of those home run hits he was swinging on an upward plane. just look at barry bonds, his 73Hr season did not come by swinging down on the ball. and if you are going to use the steroids arguement then look at joe mauer, he swings on an upward plane all the time, and got 2 batting titles.
Hey Bud. Great vids as always. I'm always looking for ways to promote the rotaional style hitting to my kids in little league. What I wanted to ask if I may is; what is the simplest approach to get kids in a good tilted position, depending on pitch location and, how to get to a firm front side. I'm always telling them not to chase the pitch with their hands, which always seems to lead to a bent front knee and a linear style.
What file format does it save in. The only problem I've had in the past using digital cameras instead of camcorders is some obscure formats that video editors didn't support.
this kids actual problem is that he comes around the ball and rolls his wrists too soon this is what make his ground balls, instead he needs to keep his hands inside the ball on a much quicker plane and then extend through after he hits the ball. this will create solid line drives.
It doesn't matter if you roll your wrists or keep your hands inside the ball if the bat is on the wrong plane of the pitch you won't generate as much consistent power and high line drives
I love it. The kid in your video started with an ok swing and with some minor adjustments has a nice stroke. How do you approach a kid with a train wreck swing?
very nice vid. I sent this video out to my 10 yr. old travel players. It's great to have a model of what their posture should look like in a rotational swing.
i love pinkman baseball! i go there! u guys are great! linear makes you hit ground balls. rotational hitting gets u bombs! thank you so much! this winter i will go there. and it would help me get on jv baseball
Outstanding explanation. We just switched our high school over to rotational hitting from linear.

ALL of the best pro hitters swing using Ted Williams theories...Ted Williams preached matching the plane, get your facts straight and come up with a more expansive vocab than bull$h!t...Mike Epstein was Ted Williams protege and used his theories to come up with a way to teach it...Rotational Hitting.

im a freshman in high school and base ball season starts in 2 weeks for me. one of the problems that i faced in other leagues was that im not hitting the ball as hard and as far as i want. would rotational hitting give me more power and get the ball farther?
dominicancheif117 2 years ago
and also i cant go out to practice because there is too much snow is there any way i can practice at home?
dominicancheif117 2 years ago
Epstein developed the rotational swing from many sessions with Ted Williams. Power in the swing is derived from the legs...hips do indeed lead the hands...a long hands oriented swing is death once a hitter faces quality pitching. If you do not match the path of the ball with the bat, you are limited to a very small contact area. Watch Pujols to see how long his bat stays in the path of the ball...even when he is a bit late or early, he still kills the ball.

Great improvement!

everything is perfect exceot his shoulders should be even because his swing is still looping and he'll hit fly balls. if he does this he will automatcly finish more by the hips and keep the ball in the zone longer and u can see the pro hitter has hit sholders more uprite

thats true especially for a speedy kind of guy like Juan Pierre but the instructions on this video are not geared toward hitting fly balls, their geared toward hitting high line drives, there's a big difference

Thank you again.
John.

What file format does it save in. The only problem I've had in the past using digital cameras instead of camcorders is some obscure formats that video editors didn't support.

I'm currently looking for a camera to do swing analysis...anyone have recomendations
bugpower18t 3 years ago
you should get the canon powershot A540 for about $150, it takes 60 frames per second videos wich is really good for swing analysis.

you can hit a basball with a swiftstik?
tollymick777 3 years ago
this kids actual problem is that he comes around the ball and rolls his wrists too soon this is what make his ground balls, instead he needs to keep his hands inside the ball on a much quicker plane and then extend through after he hits the ball. this will create solid line drives.
beastmodeonthefield 3 years ago
It doesn't matter if you roll your wrists or keep your hands inside the ball if the bat is on the wrong plane of the pitch you won't generate as much consistent power and high line drives

I love it. The kid in your video started with an ok swing and with some minor adjustments has a nice stroke. How do you approach a kid with a train wreck swing?

very nice vid. I sent this video out to my 10 yr. old travel players. It's great to have a model of what their posture should look like in a rotational swing.

You guys do an EXCEPTIONAL job.
Everything I teach my kids, comes from you guys and, the Mike Epstein approach.
