im thinking of using an old p4 512mb ram machine for linux distro, and i need to know if i should use xubuntu or ubuntu, ive used ubuntu on a vm on main machine and i use it for assembly programming. I need to know which i should use and what version.
Great video, i was missing this kind on info before installing xubuntu on my old pentium 3 computer, lets hope it works with a 320mb ram card!! thaks!!
I have installed xubuntu on my old year 2000 laptop. The specs are good enough, but when i try to start it up i only comes to a black screen that shows login or somthing. And a half second later, the screen turns totally off (laptop screen! ffs) and the pc seems to be turned off, but it isn't.
Do you know what's wrong? (i have already reinstalled one time)
@trebor292 and this: watch?v=HMsyILrQYGg&feature=related, loading image never showed up. The so called login thing i saw is a bios looking thing (black with smal white text)
it's the first time i'm using a non-windows OS, i'm trying with this Xubuntu in an old pc and it's plain frustration. at the end of the setup when i click restart to complete, while he's checking something, it ejects the disc from the drive and i get a shitload of reading adress errors, then it reboots and runs like ass. then, when i was trying a different text DPI (96 by default) when i clicked it jumped to 1000 and applied in real time so now words are 3 time bigger than the screen. WTF?
@Protomasterexe It should all ready have it. Just go into appearance and then extra the enable extra settings. type compize into the ubuntu softwere center to download the the compize manager.
Great vid. I like this distro; I'm originally a Lubuntu user so it (XFCE) reminds me of a hybrid between LXDE and GNOME. It's the only one of my four Ubuntu 10.04s (Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, and Xubuntu) that doesn't run live from the disc, so I use it in Virtualbox with Windows 7. It actually doesn't sap a lot of system resources, either. I can't wait to see what Maverick brings!
I think your desktop must be skippy as f**k. When I use my Windows, my eyes hurt at 60Hz already. But I don't wanna hate, it's awesome, am looking forward to trying it myself
I'm a newbie and I was wondering how do you get the files to wobble like that when you move it around? And also when you first instal xubuntu how do you get firefox to work as a browser?
Simply set your preferred homepage in Firefox, that will stop it from acting as a file manager. For some reason the Firefox default page is set to look at your hard drive in xubuntu 10.04
@Pabmuffin Actually I finally managed to get firefox to work. I had to disable my ipv6 and also make some adjustments in my firefox settings. It works fine now, thanks.
@AndresBarrios1990 Thank,s since then I've experimented with a few distros and have managed to install ubuntu and get it to work - mostly. I'm no geek so it took me a little time to get it mostly working. Still some things that I would love for it to do for me, namely email, as ubuntu blocks off most ports.
I'll be waiting for your video with instructions to install copiz. Are you really an Ubuntu Help Guy? Because, well, I'm using Xubuntu 9.4, and at first I had problems with Pulse Audio, and had to remove it because it always started muted, and I had to remove the Quite Splash because it made my computer to hang on a black screen. Is this 10.04 really lighter? Because my computer stinks. And, will my files will be deleted with the upgrade?

If not, could you recommend an other Linux OS?

Why is XFCE on Ubuntu so ugly? XFCE on Linux Mint looks just like Linux Mint, but XFCE on Ubuntu looks like... uh... totally different...

@Eltsacwenify Mozilla Firefox usually comes preloaded with Ubuntu and all other versions
ex. Xubuntu, Edubuntu
If Firefox is not on there you can download a version of firefox for Ubuntu from Mozilla website

@CaptainDurandal I wrote a PM to you. 10.04 is much lighter and faster. But its up to you, mate
UbuntuHelpGuy 1 year ago
I prefer Lubuntu now =D. Xubuntu is for speed but over the time Xubuntu got slower and slower. Lets hope Lubuntu keeps being fast.
