I can't quite fathom how killing the King would have *improved* the lot of the Catholics.
Research has shown that Fawkes attempt would have failed. He didn't have nearly enough blackpowder and it was of probably poor quality.
I also think that Fawkes' legend has fused with any number of Pagan autumnal festival myths.
And I'm a boorish Yank. :)
