It was Maharaja Ranjit Singh who decorated this temple with gold. It was not in its original plans. The original plans were to be a modest place of worship with much symbolism built into it

when Michael Palin from BBC visited the golden temple. I remember him saying that the gold did not represent modesty or humility. But in its actual design. It was in fact built on ground lower than the rest, so u would have to take the stairs downwards and the fact that it was surrounded by water was another symbol that represented humility of bowing down to someone. It was again a reversal of traditions of Hinduism, where most temples have stairs leading upwards....humility, humility indeed!
