The American civil war was not about slavery, the decision to abolish slavery was only taken by Lincoln mid war, when Britain and France were on the verge of supporting the south, and that decision was only taken because of the fact that both Britain and France were abolitionist, and yes, the republicans were anti-slavery, but they had not yet intended to abolish it
I was born in Mexico but raised in Lubbock Tx around white folks listening to Charlie Daniels Zz top george strait willie nelson and others, beleve it or not the fiddle is a very important instrument in traditional mexican music therefore was not hard for me to fall in love with southern music, now I live in Charlotte NC and bothers me the way black people look at me at stop ligths when im playing southern rock in a community where most young latinos dress and act like blacks .....what a shame.
From a History major as well: Yes, the American Civil War was about slavery. Or, more accurately, the expansion of slavery into the western states. The South's cotton revenue was a pittance compared to that of the industrialized North. It was expansion of slavery (see Kansas-Nebraska Act) that led to the formation of an anti-slavery Republican Party and the election of Lincoln, rendering future compromise impossible. Also direct your attention to J. Henry Hammond's delightful "Mudsill Theory."
well from a history major....i guess my history professors were wrong...but then again...i am from the south. ..and so were they...so maybe in your mind @wlangley88 they must be biased. so shall i say dig deeper! dig deeper and open your eyes to the truth. not everyone in the south is racist, and we are not ignorant redneck hillbillies...hell sum of us is evun edjukated and not republican neither!! (just fyi, that was said in a hateful sarcastic tone)
The Union won and the Confederacy lost. Both sides lost many good men fighting for what they believed was right. The South had every right to secede from the United States and the North had every right to attempt to stop them. If you really do feel that strongly about seceding from America, put your money where your mouth is and move to Mexico or make a stand, both are respectable options. If others feel that strongly about it, they have the right to fight you for a unified nation. All's fair...
And I don't happen to see why a political debate was even started over this song. If I want to listen to a song celebrating my southern heritage then I sure as hell don't care if anyone disagrees with me or dislikes it. My heritage is what it is and I'm from where I'm from....period. I am very proud of that.
As far as racism goes....here in Tennessee it is possible for an african american to get a grant for college based solely on their skin color. They are eligible to receive all the other grants that we can receive plus they have a few of their own. I would seriously hesitate on calling us racist....Whites didn't go and conquer some land and take the natives back as slaves, we bought them. It was either be killed by the warring native tribes or be sold...I would choose being sold myself.
The North never said anything about slavery being an issue until further on into the war...sorry, they didn't. So it couldn't have been over slavery. The north owned slaves as well....and when you consider the fact that most of the population lived in the north and most of the taxes came from the south it is very clear why the south wanted their independence. Whites were not the only ones who fought for the south-there were blacks and native americans as well.
This is all about bands and artists from the 70's that were from the south. Charlie Daniels Band, Skynyrd, Allman Brothers (Richard "Dickey" Betts), ZZ Top, Marshall Tucker, Wet Willie, Grinder Switch, Barefoot Jerry, Elvin Bishop (originally with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band). Epic artists, epic song. If you've never listened to some of these, do yourself a favor and do it. Check out Jimmy Hall from Wet Willie too. You can't go wrong.
I wish people would keep music separate from politics. People who love music and who have posted political statements to this song are woefully ignorant of their history.

@tazztheterrible the north instituted taxes on the south that made it cheaper to buy products that came from the south in the north. i got suspended from school when i told the history teacher that slavery didnt become and issue in the civil war till towards the end of the war. what made him so mad was i brought some books that proved it. the dean suspended me for 10 days. i told the dean that if they wanted to teach me they can teach the truth because i am not falling for their lies.
The Civil War was about money but slavery was the main reason for succession.Read the declarations made by each succeeding state. The overriding consideration for succession was slavery. The South damned itself with their own words. If you doubt what I say then take the time to read the 11 articles of succession.Indeed, slaves were property, and hence money; the problem for the south, then and to some extent today, was its unwillingness to accept blacks as equals.

@tazztheterrible - You're correct about your bit but the south did own their share of slaves as much as anywhere else in the USA at the time. Most got PAID, but were still considered slaves because they were "owned" by the rich folk - WHITE OR BLACK.
How about this bit of TRUTH about HOW the African descendents got here in the first place. They were SOLD BY THEIR OWN PEOPLE, NOT captured or rounded up like cattle!! Tribe "A" made deals with the dozen or so traders for Tribe "B"s MALE WARRIORS.
Then Tribe A could have control over tribe B people, water hole, hunting grounds, etc. This TOO was all about MONEY & POWER. How stupid to think a few white people in a couple of ships rowing in on long boats would be able to overrun hundreds of natives on the West-side of African continent? All the race stuff that followed were done by a SMALL GROUP of A-HOLES - NOT everyone. It became a political tool to distract people from BS being done by others. Egyptians enslaved too-why is no one pissed
...You know, the South has been rising for the past 40 years. Charlotte, Atlanta...Texas...I can keep going, but I think I'll stop there for now. This is not a rise of "the white south." It has nothing to with race. Slavery isn't part of this rise. Quite frankly, slavery was made obsolete by farm machinery.
Of course, chattel slavery is not part of the modern South but don't kid yourself.African Americans continue to occupy second class economic status in most of the South and mostly white politicians can't pass laws fast enough restricting black suffrage (voter ID laws). No, African Americans are no longer slaves but one can hardly fashion a defensible argument that economic parity exists between whites, blacks, and Hispanics in the South, or, for the matter, in most of the US.
There sure is a lotta smack talk around here. I'm from Canada, born and raised on country and I'd just like to say, I LOVE this shit, man!! Say what you want about who's who, the presidents that have screwed up(which will never stop) but the music is baaaad, it's nationwide!! Love the outlaw-rebel game. Peace.
@PhoenixStar102 The real extremists are the people who thought/think it was a good idea to kill 600,000 Americans in order to preserve the political power of the North over the South. The South wanted to leave in peace, but Lincoln was a maniac.
If one considers population/wealth, the Antebellum South wielded too much political power. The Southern Antebellum social system was evil. After they lost the war, Southern states usurped political power of the Union through actions of the SCOTUS and used Jim Crow laws to re-established the pre-war social system. The North, to its everlasting shame, permitted the South to do this when the pre-war system should have been suppressed.Lincoln was hardly a maniac and you are historically ignorant.
@RogerHWerner "If one considers population/wealth, the Antebellum South wielded too much political power."
And by "too much power" I take it you mean they didn't lay down and let New York bankers and industrialists run their affairs? If they had "too much power", then why not let them secede in peace?
@tekman22003 Agreed but it's amazing how many ppl don't know that there were 100s of Blacks that owned slaves in the years that followed the civil war (blacks owning slaves, hard to imagine but true) and most ppl also don't know the the "rebel" flag "dixie as it;s called now" has nothing to do with slaves but was instead a visual call to gather when in battle. There were over 100 flags used as visual cues on the field during battle, each signaled a different thing.
Charlie is THE MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got one of his greatest hit's CD's and "The South Gonna Do It Again" (track # 2 I might add) does it again several times on that CD!!
1. Slaves were escaping to the north and police were searching houses for rumaways.
2. Newer western territories were already arguing over whether to become slave or free as the borders went over the agreed bondaries that seperated free and slave.
3.The north thought all slave owners were awfull to their slaves. This was not true, many gave good living conditions and treated their slaves like family.
@benito334455 The South had Martin Luther King. The North had Malcom X. Who's the bigger racist? But then, those who call names usually have nothing to say anyway. After reading your profile, I'd have to conclude that you're either a current product of the public school system or English isn't your first language. Which one is it?
Chattel slavery was an evil. That's the end of the discussion. There was nothing decent about it. Whites enslaved another race then deemed subhuman for profit. What part about that is hard to understand? Try being a slave for even oneday and then tell me how wonderful some were treated.
The "South" will never "do it again" but I hear a new America arising,, and there will be not a thing liberal nor socialist about it... Join together or die alone--Goodness shall be reborn
@Prowler609 Really, while you Northerners have been sitting around on you butts counting your laurels on a war that had absolutely nothing to do with slavery. Obama is supposedly from Hawaii. Reagan and Nixon were from California. Clinton, Bush 2, Johnson, and Carter were all from the south. So that leaves you with Ford. Bush 1 was from Connecticut, but he's an adopted Southerner because he now lives in Texas. I lived in the North. What a joke. The South has all of the great culture.
Sorry to burst your bubble but an overwhelming majority of Americans don't see the America you describe. My sense is that you know next to nothing about liberalism and even less about socialism. You really ought to read up on both before you embrace an ideology that is largely the cause of our present situation.
With all do respect Roger, I do not believe I gave you enough information to conclude any ideology that I may or may not--as you put it-- “embrace” But please, tell me what the majority wants..
If you're denying your comment expresses an ideology then perhaps your blind to the meaning of your words You're words are pregnant with ideology. "Obama is supposedly from Hawaii?"That one sentence tells anyone with an once of objectivity all they need to know about your particular mindset. It's still a reasonably free country and people are therefore free to embrace whatever delusions they wish to embrace.Don't try to deny the meaning behind what you write.
@RogerHWerner Ummm,, you sir, are confused at best while being hard-headed as well as wrong-headed at worse...I am sorry sir, but at this time I see NO viable reason to continue with you... You are crediting me with post made by others.. And quite frankly, based on the level of self-importance displayed by you, that's more courtesy by way of eplanation extended to you than deserved.
"Obama is supposedly from Hawaii" this is a direct quote from one of your post. "while you Northerners have been sitting around on you butts counting your laurels on a war that had absolutely nothing to do with slavery..." You sir are delusional.
We will never see the days of true rebel country rock. Now days its about pretending to be picture perfect and lying to everyone all at the same time.
@Balotelliminustheego So what, misspelled one damn word, big whoop, maybe if you werent such a damn black supremisists we wouldnt be having this convorsation.
@1223339 Why do always have to try to take other people's history? Don't you have anything inside you for anybody? Can't just say, "wow, those people really have something,' but we're not them. Nobody wants to be you. Don't want your nasty history, either.
@reaper3216 I can tell you're from one of our lower 48 states...you're all ignorant and cannot spell or speak properly! By the way... it's rise, not raise...
The only reason I hope the South DOESN'T do it again is because without the Conservatives in the South, this great nation will continue to move away from the values that make it the greatest on Earth, and toward soft tyranny... wish I lived in Texas.
@busterbone bring back slavery give the fuckers something to do, there were more ethnic births in your country than anglo americans . Was gonna rant from here but coudn't see the point you either black or a lover. Its goin the same way here and we started slavery.
@busterbone Just so you know, the civil war was started by the north. It also had nothing to do with the south wanting to keep its slaves. If that was the case then the war would have been over peacefully on Jan. 1,1863. The war was about taxation. The south represented 20% of the population and paid 80% of the taxes. Also, there were slaves and slave owners of all colors. Just thought you should know some facts before you continue to spout propaganda.
@poetgurl86 well i know more than u proabably think about among other things-US History and i don't doubt your facts except that "the Civil War was started by the North". The Southern states were the ones that suceeded the Union, not vice versa. I know it wasn't just about slavery. Also, the War was so devastating only fools were the ones that "wanted" just a bloodbath on US Soil! I'll give you that your points are well taken on your side-although they seem skewed from a Southern perspective.
@busterbone I think you mean that we "seceded" from the North. Had we "succeeded" things would be a lot better. And you're right, the Northern Agression was not about slaves. It was about economic power and how the North couldn't get what it wanted any other way.
@busterbone The "Civil War" was started because Rich Southern Bastards held Human Beings in Hostage and Servitude because they were too lazy to do their own dirty work!!! When it became apparant this was appalling (too late) decent people all over the Country, North and South, fought to put an end to it!
@GANN010355 The rick Northen Bastards also owned slaves. Not as many, but of course not. Why would they need many? They ain't farming up north. Either way, both sides had some.
@kellybequine I wasn't talking about the midwest. I was talking about the north eastern states with rocky soil and cold climates that aren't suitable for farming. I was talking about the states next to the Atlantic.
@kellybequine corn and soybeans are annually planted where I live here in the south. But you don't really need that much labor collecting that. Where as cotton which was the south's main crop at the time and it needs hundreds of people to collect and clean and get distributed to the NORTH. Just saying. Have a nice day.
Despite I'm originally from Puerto Rico,I lived in NC during my childhood (dad was military), and now live in Virginia (the military brought me here); I can definitely say that the south is my home. PR might be my heritage, but my heart belongs in the south.
This is one of the bad things about Mr. Gore's internets. How the FUCK does this get turned in to a months' long political diatribe. It's music. It fucking ROCKS. FUCK the political bullshit. And, by the way Jacksonville is in the southern part of Florida, because, in Florida, the farther south you go, the more north you get. Blame it on the snowbirds.
@Crossingthewhonivers Nah the south had slaves for many years, And the Yanks wanted to Stop them so Tech the Yankees are the Terriost in the Civil war.
@Crossingthewhonivers Nah the south had slaves for many years, And the Yanks wanted to Stop them so Tech the Yankees are the Terriost in the Civil war. LONG LIVE THE SOUTH!
@Crossingthewhonivers it aint about slavery it was about freedom-yanks put in the history books its all about slavery but its really about yankees taking away our rights, we left and they invaded us.
I would call this southern rock or country rock but I can be can hear that little blues sound in it. It reminds me of that sound the Blues Brothers had with that Sweet Home Chicago. Its just another song that makes you want to stomp your feet or some shit. I love it!!
@candimandy1976 im from florida and i will back this one up jacksonville rednecks if i ever saw one im a sumter county redneck myself so keep that flag a flying brother be safe
so charlie daniels doesn't believe in preserving the union? i thought we were the greatest country on earth and shit but i guess charlie daniels is part of the blame america first crowd. fucking elitist siding with obama on EVERY issue i can't believe it
Damn . Saw CDB in 1979 .Capital Theater, Passiac NJ..Double concert with The Outlaws,,and all us Damn Yankees were rocking our asses off..when the 2 groups got together to do this song it bleew the roof off the place..and all the doobie smoke went to heaven..PEACE

There were over 100 flags used as visual cues on the field during battle, each signaled a different thing.

@frederickus I'm not racist. Some of my best friends are black
benito334455 6 months ago
Sorry Charlie!!!
frederickus 6 months ago
The civil war started for several reasons
4. Cant think of anymore right now 3:30 am.
benito334455 6 months ago
@benito334455 ABSOLUTE RACIST BULLSHIT!!!
frederickus 6 months ago
@benito334455 The South had Martin Luther King. The North had Malcom X. Who's the bigger racist? But then, those who call names usually have nothing to say anyway. After reading your profile, I'd have to conclude that you're either a current product of the public school system or English isn't your first language. Which one is it?
jejarrett 5 months ago
@benito334455 working for free for your entire life and having your immediate family sold.......this is being treated like family?
tekman22003 5 months ago
Chattel slavery was an evil. That's the end of the discussion. There was nothing decent about it. Whites enslaved another race then deemed subhuman for profit. What part about that is hard to understand? Try being a slave for even oneday and then tell me how wonderful some were treated.

The "South" will never "do it again" but I hear a new America arising,, and there will be not a thing liberal nor socialist about it... Join together or die alone--Goodness shall be reborn

TATELANDDOG 5 months ago
@Prowler609 Really, while you Northerners have been sitting around on you butts counting your laurels on a war that had absolutely nothing to do with slavery. Obama is supposedly from Hawaii. Reagan and Nixon were from California. Clinton, Bush 2, Johnson, and Carter were all from the south. So that leaves you with Ford. Bush 1 was from Connecticut, but he's an adopted Southerner because he now lives in Texas. I lived in the North. What a joke. The South has all of the great culture.
jejarrett 5 months ago
Sorry to burst your bubble but an overwhelming majority of Americans don't see the America you describe. My sense is that you know next to nothing about liberalism and even less about socialism. You really ought to read up on both before you embrace an ideology that is largely the cause of our present situation.
RogerHWerner 2 months ago
@RogerHWerner
With all do respect Roger, I do not believe I gave you enough information to conclude any ideology that I may or may not--as you put it-- “embrace” But please, tell me what the majority wants..
Prowler609 2 months ago
If you're denying your comment expresses an ideology then perhaps your blind to the meaning of your words You're words are pregnant with ideology. "Obama is supposedly from Hawaii?"That one sentence tells anyone with an once of objectivity all they need to know about your particular mindset. It's still a reasonably free country and people are therefore free to embrace whatever delusions they wish to embrace.Don't try to deny the meaning behind what you write.
RogerHWerner 2 months ago
@RogerHWerner Ummm,, you sir, are confused at best while being hard-headed as well as wrong-headed at worse...I am sorry sir, but at this time I see NO viable reason to continue with you... You are crediting me with post made by others.. And quite frankly, based on the level of self-importance displayed by you, that's more courtesy by way of eplanation extended to you than deserved.
Prowler609 2 months ago
"Obama is supposedly from Hawaii" this is a direct quote from one of your post. "while you Northerners have been sitting around on you butts counting your laurels on a war that had absolutely nothing to do with slavery..." You sir are delusional.

@busterbone bring back slavery give the fuckers something to do, there were more ethnic births in your country than anglo americans . Was gonna rant from here but coudn't see the point you either black or a lover. Its goin the same way here and we started slavery.
bu11d06 10 months ago 2
@busterbone Just so you know, the civil war was started by the north. It also had nothing to do with the south wanting to keep its slaves. If that was the case then the war would have been over peacefully on Jan. 1,1863. The war was about taxation. The south represented 20% of the population and paid 80% of the taxes. Also, there were slaves and slave owners of all colors. Just thought you should know some facts before you continue to spout propaganda.
poetgurl86 9 months ago
@poetgurl86 well i know more than u proabably think about among other things-US History and i don't doubt your facts except that "the Civil War was started by the North". The Southern states were the ones that suceeded the Union, not vice versa. I know it wasn't just about slavery. Also, the War was so devastating only fools were the ones that "wanted" just a bloodbath on US Soil! I'll give you that your points are well taken on your side-although they seem skewed from a Southern perspective.
busterbone 9 months ago
@busterbone I think you mean that we "seceded" from the North. Had we "succeeded" things would be a lot better. And you're right, the Northern Agression was not about slaves. It was about economic power and how the North couldn't get what it wanted any other way.
macscheese 9 months ago
@busterbone The "Civil War" was started because Rich Southern Bastards held Human Beings in Hostage and Servitude because they were too lazy to do their own dirty work!!! When it became apparant this was appalling (too late) decent people all over the Country, North and South, fought to put an end to it!
GANN010355 9 months ago
@GANN010355 The rick Northen Bastards also owned slaves. Not as many, but of course not. Why would they need many? They ain't farming up north. Either way, both sides had some.
sarge958 9 months ago
@sarge958
Yes, because of course there no farms in the midwest, o that corn belt i guess growing corn and soybeans isnt farming anymore.
kellybequine 8 months ago
@kellybequine midwest?Where does the midwest come into this?
sarge958 8 months ago
@sarge958
You said we didn't farm in the north, the Midwest is in the north and we sure as hell farm.
kellybequine 8 months ago
@kellybequine I wasn't talking about the midwest. I was talking about the north eastern states with rocky soil and cold climates that aren't suitable for farming. I was talking about the states next to the Atlantic.
sarge958 8 months ago
@kellybequine Not all midwestern states are northern. Missouri is Midwestern in an east to west view, but north and south its southern.
USAamericaUSA 8 months ago
@kellybequine corn and soybeans are annually planted where I live here in the south. But you don't really need that much labor collecting that. Where as cotton which was the south's main crop at the time and it needs hundreds of people to collect and clean and get distributed to the NORTH. Just saying. Have a nice day.
