Awesome post, I read Smokin Hot and said to myself, self, yeah right. You know what? Now I am saying to myself, self, that is one smokin hot Dead video. Great Job. I got goose bumps listening to the Boys play this one.
I was right in front of Jerry for this. Earlier in the show I was pouring a bag of what I thought was extasy in my nose. Jerry saw me do this and laughed in that benign, non-judgmental way of his. When he sings, at the refrained first verse at 3:20, "watch each card you play and, Children, please play it slow", he's looking right at me....
This is the video I use when someone argues their point that Jer wasnt one of the greates Guitarists of all time. I simply fast forward to 3:50 and let it play out.... Good luck argueing after that ;)
I was a big fan of Jerry and the dead, saw them many times, and really listened them nearly exclusively for a while in college. However, if you think this video is going to sway anyone into thinking he was one of the greatest guitarists every you are incorrect. He was musical and you felt the emotion in his playing, but to say he is even a top 50 guitar player is a huge stretch.
I did not make my post to stir things up. Someone a few posts before this talked about this video (at 3:50 and on) is where they send people who do not think Jerry was a great guitarist. My point is that this video is not going to change anyone's mind in that area. Jerry is easily in my top 5 favorite guitarist of all time. But that is because of him, their music, and how it all worked. He just should never be pushed as a top rock or jazz guitarist of all time. He is not.
anybody good enough to play alongside ornette coleman is daaaamn good. plus compare him to say keith richards..no comparison. id say hes on a similar level as al di meola but prolly better in some respects(less showboating)
THANK YOU for the memories!! I was there - was my 3rd show :) Forgot just how beautiful the stage set-up was that summer tour - loved it! Hard to believe it'll be 20 years next July...where does the time go?
This made the show, in '88 and '89, IMHO. I saw them do this at Rich and Alpine, and maybe more. No offense to "Morning Dew", and in Oakland, "Music Never Stopped" in '90, but this is the uh, shizzit for 1st set closers. Again, I was there.
And 10,000 Maniacs opened the show 'cause they were local (from near Buffalo). Natalie was a bit freaked out by the crowd, and asked for medical assistance for someone in the front.
i love this tune because it's such a Jerry showcase - the rest of the band more or less does the same thing every time, but Jerry really stretches out in the final jam ...hardcore straight ahead rock & roll. Deal is pretty unique in these ways among Dead tunes. I love it!
April 23rd 1995 at The Warfield in SF. Balcony, Ctr, first row NO LIE. Ticket from Scalper.. Damn, that show was actually the final JGB show.
Opened with Twist of Fate I think.. Anyways, out and around the back door after the show we waited 2 Damn minutes and out comes Jerry in slippers with a white towel around his neck, gives us all a wave & giggle from ten feet away, gets into a Black Mini Van, and off into the SF night.. LAST SHOW. FIRST MEMORY!
This was my 1st Grateful Dead concert. I had just turned 17. A few of my friends went with me on a whim. Best decision I have ever made musically speaking. Totally blew me away. I live about 2 hours from Rich Stadium and never missed another GD concert there after that. I've seen them many other places but IMHO nothing compared to seeing the Dead at Rich Stadium. Some great great memories there. Camping out behind the 7/11, my first "trip", great jams in the parking lots etc etc.
I realize they had a run of what, 10 or so years as #1 in earnings for Music Events(all artists)that'd turn most people to act like a goffy golf snob!!Thats y GD R my 2nd fav. music to listen2!Theidea here is:they never FORGOT the kind people they were&became! I think,--fatman2welnick&horsby:all members were in tune &realized life's important things,&the toetappin beat, gtate lyrics,&the variety of musics, song,&places equal THE GRATEFUL DEAD WILL LIVE 4EVER
THIS VERSION IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES; "DEAL" IS 1 OF MY FAVORITE JERRY SONGS.......I ESPECIALLY LOVE THE THE LYRIC ......"SINCE YOU POURED THE WINE FOR ME AND TIGHTENED UP MY SHOES"..... I DON'T WHY ,IT'S NOT RELATIVE TO ME OR MY LIFE IT JUST A GRATE LYRIC!! pLEASE SOMEBODY OUT THERE UPLOAD A 'DAYJOB' I'VE HAD AN ITCH TO LISTEN TO THAT TUNE....GOIN TO SEE BOBBY AND ABB ON SAT NITE....THAT'S RIGHT IT'S SATURDAY NIGHT..SO I CAN BANK ON HEARING SAT NITE @ THE SHOW
DUDE! I WAS THERE!!! Fourth of July. Drove from Chicago to Buffalo overnight. 10,000 Maniacs opened (they were local). '89 was an awesome year for Deal. Then came Alpine!
"DeAL" was probably a staple at nearly every show in 1980-1981.My logic is the LP Garcia came out and "Deal" was on the album...Jerry most likely jammed it w/ the dead because he wanted to hav it tight inthe studio for his album. You were lucky to be there (u BASTARD!) anyway, how was 10,000 maniacs? or was lot scene still happnin'?just gotta poke around
No...the album with Deal had been out for at least "10 good solid years" at this point. Garcia just enjoyed playing this song with both the Dead and JGB at the time.
love Jerry; those bluesey-chromatic licks, that feeling...pure guitar art, without tricks, just music in every single note...one of the best of everytime
Some of my best memories are of being at Dead shows. Nothing like them. No band could stand on the gas for 15-20 minutes at a time like the dead. Watching 60,000 people dance on their seats while the fat man channelled Clarence White, Coltrane, Miles, Lester Flatt.... it was always amazing, pandemonium
Bob Weir is the rhythm guitarist in the middle with the short shorts and the pink shirt, Phil Lesh is the bassist with the wrists bands on all the way to the left, and Jerry is...Jerry lol
Man, does this bring back memories. This was a great show!! I remember after the show I was talking to a cop who was so amazed that there were no fights or problems out of us! I offered him a toasted cheese but I think he was afraid to eat anything we gave him because of the size of our pupils! Its awesome to be able to share some of my shows with my children!! I miss this more than I realized! I guess my love did not fade away!
i was there, only on the outside of the stadium. i was 15 and not yet a true fan. actually, i think i got let in towards the end .....i dont remember. good times.
