Would it help to buy from a reseller? I mean, some store that has good customer service, would they help with this? I don't expect the manufacturers to matter that much since most computers in the world are assembled by two companies. Foxconn and Quanta.
Hey Gladstone, how about an article on the top 10 worst customer services? That's the kind of article that, if you get any negative feedback at all, will be from someone working from those companies.
Dude, seriously? Next time you have computer problems, I could fix it better than they could.
Also, the thing about building your own computer? That just means a person thinks they have a handle on the software issues, as well. Which this probably was.
@RavenRabbitNumberTwo Could you send me a new one for free? BC that's what ultimately happened. It was hardware failure of an under warranty unit. Not like some virus or something.
@gladstonew Touché, good sir. But from atop my soap box of speculation and assumption, going to a black screen right after the windows logo doesn't seem like hardware failure to me. Unless they stuck your hard drive into an identical computer and it worked fine there, and that is ultimately what they sent back to you.
But hey, what do I know? I'm just an internet commenter standing on a soap box.
(Seriously, it could have been anything. Fuck if I know.)
@gladstonew Can I assume they eventually fixed your computer? It looked to me like the graphics chip built into the processor was failing intermittently, I don't suppose if they fixed it they would have told you exactly what was wrong would they? By the way, I think your desk is fine and highly unlikely to result in a ventilation issue.
Asus = product of China (Taiwan but the same thing both are under-developed countries) that are not reliable. although Acer is worse. Both are bad anywayz. Don't trust those not only made in china, but chinese related companies that produce electronics. All they care about is the money they collect, thus no reliable customer service. do not trust those Taiwanese / Chinese companies. Go with Sony HP (maybe Dell) Samsung Apple LG Toshiba stuffs like that.
@Awesomecheeseism Asus make some of the most reliable computers, HP are the least reliable by far. But they're all made in the same factory in China anyway, so the brand is just a sticker on the case.
@Awesomecheeseism The only router I've had that didn't overheat and fuck itself into shutting down every hour or two was made by a Chinese company, for Chinese people. TP-Link, number one brand in China, the box said. "Terrible wireless performance" the internet said. Worked better than both a Netgear and DLink router.
Just because it's made in China, sold for 20 dollars, and lauds itself as the number 1 chinese brand, doesn't mean it's crap.
Gladstone, you should know better. As a customer you should know that your job is to just keep giving the company money and if Asus feels that you have earned the privilege to use their fine product then you should truly rejoice. Until then, you should feel proud that they sent you such a nice paperweight.
How long did you have the door closed without any kind of fresh air ventilation with your desktop inside it before your motherboard/cpu fried? You do realize, if you have no fresh air ventilation it will overheat your computer and fry that little microprocessor within a day or so?
@timeaxis1 That would 0. 0 seconds. You saw the video right? the door was never shut and it didnt work instantly so.... yeah. Also, it was not in that unit before it broke. Great.
I had an insanely stupid/similar experience with ASUS customer service. They really are that bad. I felt the same thing when they mailed my complaint letter back to them. It was the most ridiculous CS experience of my entire life, and it's not even close.
As a computer technician, I can tell you that all that has happened is either your video drivers have corrupted, or the display is set to a resolution that your monitor can not display. It's a b*tch to get working again when this happens, but the solution is to try another monitor, set the resolution to 640x480 or 800x600 (a low resolution that hopefully your other monitor can display). Then plus it into your original monitor and change the resolution you need it to be set at.
I actually had the exactly opposite experience with asus. I mailed them my laptop, they fixed everything i said was wrong with it (crashing on startup, dead pixels in screen, unresponsive spacebar sometimes), and gave me a free 320gb harddrive just in case the harddrive was the problem. Also, you probably shouldn't keep your computer in a confined space like that. Bad airflow, increases your risk of overheating.
Asus tech support sucks. I RMA'ed a motherboard that wouldn't post. Not only did I have to scrounge up all this crazy, hard-to-find shipping container stuff (can't ship it in the box it came in!), but they sent it back "tested OK". It sat in the computer shop where I work for a few years until I stabbed it to death it with a screwdriver a few weeks ago. Something like 150-200 bucks down the drain.
I bought a motherboard from Tigerdirect made by Asus that was broken when it got here and was missing an SLI bridge. I called Asus and they said it was Tigerdirect's fault so I called Tigerdirect and they said it was Asus's fault. this repeated a couple more times until I told one of them to stop bullshitting me. Eventually I got a refund on the motherboard and got another one made by MSI.
Go to lemonlaw (dot) com. Depending on where you live you may be able to get a completely new system for free. I got a new laptop from dell because after the third attempt they could not fix the problem.
I don't get it, why does everyone have computer software problems but me? The only major problems I've had that were this bad were hardware-related, like faulty RAM or an overheating CPU or something. I have an ASUS laptop and a netbook, and I had to replace the keyboard on the laptop twice, but they just sent me the spare keyboard and I did it myself. The netbook's been working fine for two years. I almost never have Windows problems, and nothing I can't fix. Man, I wish you had my card.
I have been there. When I got my Macbook it was dead on arrival. I sent it off, came back with a paperweight quality DVD drive. I hope this video lights a fire under the right Asus employee's ass and you get a sincere, proper apology from whoever dropped the ball on this.
Also, yeah, you're dead right about returning your letter. No QC department should do that, ever!
My husband has an Asus. It's a disaster. The mouse is oversensitive, but worse than that, it overheats like a nightmare. It actually warped the power cord. We bought a new one, and we have to jiggle it around into all sorts of weird positions in order to get the laptop charging. Don't buy Asus.
LordZope the computer came preloaded with windows so it woudl still be an Asus problem. But actually know the problem was resolved but they sent it back with the disc drive missing so there's that.
@gladstonew I had this is exact same issue and with asus too. I took it to bestbuy and had it running in like 10 minutes. I found out for me the graphic card drivers were suddenly no longer compatible even though i had them for a while. I had to safe mode restore the original from factory drivers to get it to work. However I can no longer update my drivers for the video card, ever or the issue happens again.
Pretty sure that's a problem with Windows not Asus.
Depending on your warranty Asus my just not think it's their problem.
If it boots up past the POST (Power On Self Test) and to the Windows loading screen then the hardware is probably working, if Windows fails to loads that's Microsoft problem.
But that could just be me, I've never bothered sending a computer back to be fixed, always found it quicker and easier to do it myself.
that's why i stopped buying name brand and build my own rigs. customer service never fixed anything for me, and it always takes less time and nerves to google and ask around the web than to talk to them and mail it back and forth. what a waste of time and money...
why so many uploaded comments? Does that mean I have a chance of fulfilling my life-long dream? Oh wait, I gotta say something of value first. Hmm... boobs
I sent my computer to repair once, with a broken diskdrive. It came back with raped speakers. Sent it in again, they fucked my mousebuttons up. Did it again, it never came back.
I'm pretty sure it's a software problem on your end. Before sending it back, just try booting from a Live CD. I'm willing to bet they've kept sending it back because they haven't found hardware problems; ASUS is generally a very reliable company in terms of build quality & customer service, comparable to Apple. (It's why I bought an ASUS laptop.)
No call from Asus but i stayed on the line until I got a supervisor. Their plan. Send it to HEADQUARTERS and this time it will be fixed FOR REAL or replaced. Woudl the put that in writing? No, they refused. Flat out. Good thing its on tape and they've been told to preserve it in anticipation of litigation.
Try booting it into safe mode - next time on the windows loading screen, turn it off by pulling power - then on next boot, use the arrow keys to select safe mode - press enter. If this works, you've got a chance of fixing it without formatting
That happened to me. Did you try just uninstalling and redownloading your video drivers under safe mode? My drivers got corrupted and would do that on a regular boot.
Wow it took 12 hours to get a mac fanboy! They must be slipping. I will say however yes superior customer service. But then again, I'd get better customer service from an angry pimp at this point.
Okay, now I can't take you seriously. Why did you buy a PC in the first place if you didn't want to deal with shitty customer service?
I feel like only people who are actually familiar with windows and know how to fix OS problems themselves should buy PCs. Everyone else should go get Mac. At least then you're shit will get fixed.
@csmybuttt The fuck??! I've never even bought an apple product... I was just saying if you didn't want to have to deal with shitty customer service and you don't know how to fix it yourself, you don't deserve a PC.
@postal2600 that's their policy. mail to them. it's under warranty. i'm not paying a service center to fix it and i'm no buying windows which came pre-installed. I agree it's probably a simple fix and they should fix it. Simply.
@gladstonew To start, this is customer service at its worst, I've worked in telephone computer CS for years and this would have gotten fixed the second time at worst if I was on top of it because I would of made sure management was aware of the incompetence, I would of thrown in an upgrade too.
@raveneros I've seen that problem before. In most cases its a bad installation of Windows, in other situations its a problem with the hard disk/partition, has a bad sector that its stuck on in the MBR. Now, I'd like to hope they've already walked you through using the recovery disc or recovery partition to try to fix this, I'd hope even further that it came with one of those two things....
@raveneros If it does and they haven't walked you through it I would advise doing that, or if that doesn't work alternatively pressing F8 repeatedly prior to Windows loading and running startup repair which will do a disc check usually repairing any bad sectors.
@raveneros Either one of those or a combination of the two should fix it, if it doesn't then the HD is physically scratched and requires replacement. If this is the case they are charging you to mail it best to just buy an HD and replace it yourself since the cost of mailing it 4 times would be about the same or more as buying a new HD.
At three times without a sufficient repair, you annoyance is certainly justified.
It is extremely peculiar for them to return your letter of complaint to you, and if I received service similar to that, I would be lead to believe they never even read it.
Next time you send it in, let them now you have a pretty big Youtube following, and you are documenting all this on video. Send them the link to the URL too, so they know you are serious. Bet you they fix it real quick then.
It looks to be a corrupted configuration problem. Like others have said, you can boot from a cdr. I also suggest trying a windows installation disk utilizing the repair function. If it doesn't fix the problem, I can't tell you what it is. The problem you describe practically screams file corruption.
Gladstone, out of curiosity, what does the computer do if you put in a live linux disc (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc). If you're getting to the "Starting Windows" screen it might not be a hardware issue, just some sort of Windows config
Thats the reason i only once had a Compaq PC (only have a HP laptop now) and after that all self builds.
OT: seem your Windows or your Videocard is FUBAR. Like some one already advised try to boot Ubuntu from a CDR thats how you can rule out the HDD/OS problem.
Looks to me like an error with windows, not the computer. Have you tried sticking a new hard drive in there and installing windows on it? Then you can connect your current hard drive and move over any files that are important (like upcoming HBN episodes, Photos etc) then format the original drive.
@gladstonew They did something similar to me with a motherboard I bought while building my own computer. Sent it back to be repaired. They had it a few days and sent it back to me "fixed" - only when I booted the computer I had the same exact problem. Even worse, they had no information for me on the phone about what the problem was (so likely they never did anything). All told took me a month and a half to get a functioning motherboard from Asus.
@BlyGilmore Just to add - i've bought Asus before and have always been happy with their products (mostly motherboards). they have a reputation for making good stuff. but after dealing with their "customer" service i'm never buying another Asus product, or any products with Asus parts.
Angry Gladstone!!! Really scary to be honest... weird how they can't fix the issue though... it may just be that your windows is corrupted and you just to have to re-install it... if not that it's hardware and that just requires replacement... ASUS are known to be fail with their pre-built systems
You should have thrown in a good dick joke to get proper service from the repair company instead. Computer techs love a good laugh while pretending they know what they're doing while not really doing anything at all .
But not the regular kind of dick jokes, rather the kind where you tell them to check a certain folder and they "accidentally" find the section filled with jpegs of you naked, in 50 filthily awkward poses on your neighbors lawn with their dog Chloe. You dog you!
I would suggest there is hardware driver corruption, maybe virus/rootkit related. I personally would format/reinstall in that situation, just for security alone. If data loss is an issue I would get a cheap usb hard-drive enclosure to transfer any non-archived data to your laptop. It is certainly a pain to have to do out of the blue. Still, set a saturday afternoon aside - 'jobs a good 'un' as we say in my neck of the woods!
@TheLoneBards Not necessarily, in a situation like that, it could also be an OS corruption, replacing the HDD and installing an OS doesn't rule out that possibility. If it is an Operating system issue, then its a software problem, not a hardware one, and its no surprise that they aren't doing anything when it gets sent in, since software is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
@MasterDuncan03 If the problem is something not covered by the warranty, they should've at least told him that, instead of sending back the complaint letter with no other documentation.
*forgot to mention, before to spend a bunch of money on new hardware you might want to try to reinstall windows incase of virus or windows sys is screwed up:/
hmmm just seeing like that but you do something extremelly wrong... never encase the pc like that you will burn something in there... (whats probably happened) I would sugest to remove the video card and plug it directly on board, i suspect your video card is fryed. :/
@Pandor25 thats not what happened. that was the computers second time ever in there. the first time was the first time it failed to work. we've yet to use that computer with that furniture.
It could be the operating system. One think you could try is look up Ubuntu. You could actually download a copy that burns it to a DVD and runs off the disk. You don't have to install it on your hard drive This way you could see if it's the operating system or the hardware.
sometimes the computer displays on all ports at start-up... Try switching to a different monitor (ex: if you use HDMI try a VGA) or if you know the "next output" function try that after the computer has had time to completely boot. (for my laptop it is function+F5 but most desktops don't have a designated key for that)
Long time watcher, first time commenter, yada yada.
Are operating system errors covered under warranty? The hardware is probably fine, and with the Windows disk you should be able to fix the problem yourself. I can offer help as I'm afraid I'm not of much use to be able to finance HBN.

And it's windows!!! Just re-install it. In the time it took to actually film, edit and post this, you would have a new working windows.
postal2600 3 months ago
@postal2600 that's their policy. mail to them. it's under warranty. i'm not paying a service center to fix it and i'm no buying windows which came pre-installed. I agree it's probably a simple fix and they should fix it. Simply.
gladstonew 3 months ago 4
@gladstonew To start, this is customer service at its worst, I've worked in telephone computer CS for years and this would have gotten fixed the second time at worst if I was on top of it because I would of made sure management was aware of the incompetence, I would of thrown in an upgrade too.
raveneros 2 months ago
@raveneros I've seen that problem before. In most cases its a bad installation of Windows, in other situations its a problem with the hard disk/partition, has a bad sector that its stuck on in the MBR. Now, I'd like to hope they've already walked you through using the recovery disc or recovery partition to try to fix this, I'd hope even further that it came with one of those two things....
raveneros 2 months ago
@raveneros If it does and they haven't walked you through it I would advise doing that, or if that doesn't work alternatively pressing F8 repeatedly prior to Windows loading and running startup repair which will do a disc check usually repairing any bad sectors.
raveneros 2 months ago
@raveneros Either one of those or a combination of the two should fix it, if it doesn't then the HD is physically scratched and requires replacement. If this is the case they are charging you to mail it best to just buy an HD and replace it yourself since the cost of mailing it 4 times would be about the same or more as buying a new HD.
raveneros 2 months ago
At three times without a sufficient repair, you annoyance is certainly justified.
It is extremely peculiar for them to return your letter of complaint to you, and if I received service similar to that, I would be lead to believe they never even read it.
Montblanc040394 3 months ago
Next time you send it in, let them now you have a pretty big Youtube following, and you are documenting all this on video. Send them the link to the URL too, so they know you are serious. Bet you they fix it real quick then.
YoungBrave2006 3 months ago
It looks to be a corrupted configuration problem. Like others have said, you can boot from a cdr. I also suggest trying a windows installation disk utilizing the repair function. If it doesn't fix the problem, I can't tell you what it is. The problem you describe practically screams file corruption.
ForeverServant 3 months ago
Well apparently Asus also hates by numbers. Numbers of repairs to be exact.

this is a sad fucking story, Gladstone. Feel for ya, buddy.
shittyfagg 3 months ago
Gladstone, out of curiosity, what does the computer do if you put in a live linux disc (Ubuntu, Fedora, etc). If you're getting to the "Starting Windows" screen it might not be a hardware issue, just some sort of Windows config
miggyb89 3 months ago
Thats the reason i only once had a Compaq PC (only have a HP laptop now) and after that all self builds.
OT: seem your Windows or your Videocard is FUBAR. Like some one already advised try to boot Ubuntu from a CDR thats how you can rule out the HDD/OS problem.
RDJ134 3 months ago
Looks to me like an error with windows, not the computer. Have you tried sticking a new hard drive in there and installing windows on it? Then you can connect your current hard drive and move over any files that are important (like upcoming HBN episodes, Photos etc) then format the original drive.
roadjam 3 months ago
My anger was really scary? Anyway sure. all sorts of things might be causing the problem. It'sunder warranty. They're supposed to fix it.
gladstonew 3 months ago
@gladstonew They did something similar to me with a motherboard I bought while building my own computer. Sent it back to be repaired. They had it a few days and sent it back to me "fixed" - only when I booted the computer I had the same exact problem. Even worse, they had no information for me on the phone about what the problem was (so likely they never did anything). All told took me a month and a half to get a functioning motherboard from Asus.
BlyGilmore 3 months ago
@BlyGilmore Just to add - i've bought Asus before and have always been happy with their products (mostly motherboards). they have a reputation for making good stuff. but after dealing with their "customer" service i'm never buying another Asus product, or any products with Asus parts.
BlyGilmore 3 months ago
Angry Gladstone!!! Really scary to be honest... weird how they can't fix the issue though... it may just be that your windows is corrupted and you just to have to re-install it... if not that it's hardware and that just requires replacement... ASUS are known to be fail with their pre-built systems
Domitian88 3 months ago
It's obvious ASUS aren't happy with the HBN episodes!
dummychaos 3 months ago
You should have thrown in a good dick joke to get proper service from the repair company instead. Computer techs love a good laugh while pretending they know what they're doing while not really doing anything at all .
But not the regular kind of dick jokes, rather the kind where you tell them to check a certain folder and they "accidentally" find the section filled with jpegs of you naked, in 50 filthily awkward poses on your neighbors lawn with their dog Chloe. You dog you!
fenix9885 3 months ago
I would suggest there is hardware driver corruption, maybe virus/rootkit related. I personally would format/reinstall in that situation, just for security alone. If data loss is an issue I would get a cheap usb hard-drive enclosure to transfer any non-archived data to your laptop. It is certainly a pain to have to do out of the blue. Still, set a saturday afternoon aside - 'jobs a good 'un' as we say in my neck of the woods!
morelenmir 3 months ago
by the 3rd time, wouldn't it just have been cheaper for them to send you a new computer instead?

Simple test, grab a $30 hdd and install whatever windows system you have on that. If the pc then works, it's a hdd problem.
TheLoneBards 3 months ago
@TheLoneBards Not necessarily, in a situation like that, it could also be an OS corruption, replacing the HDD and installing an OS doesn't rule out that possibility. If it is an Operating system issue, then its a software problem, not a hardware one, and its no surprise that they aren't doing anything when it gets sent in, since software is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
MasterDuncan03 3 months ago
@MasterDuncan03 If the problem is something not covered by the warranty, they should've at least told him that, instead of sending back the complaint letter with no other documentation.

*forgot to mention, before to spend a bunch of money on new hardware you might want to try to reinstall windows incase of virus or windows sys is screwed up:/

Newegg. That is all.
vgmgc 3 months ago
hmmm just seeing like that but you do something extremelly wrong... never encase the pc like that you will burn something in there... (whats probably happened) I would sugest to remove the video card and plug it directly on board, i suspect your video card is fryed. :/
Pandor25 3 months ago
@Pandor25 thats not what happened. that was the computers second time ever in there. the first time was the first time it failed to work. we've yet to use that computer with that furniture.
gladstonew 3 months ago
It could be the operating system. One think you could try is look up Ubuntu. You could actually download a copy that burns it to a DVD and runs off the disk. You don't have to install it on your hard drive This way you could see if it's the operating system or the hardware.

sometimes the computer displays on all ports at start-up... Try switching to a different monitor (ex: if you use HDMI try a VGA) or if you know the "next output" function try that after the computer has had time to completely boot. (for my laptop it is function+F5 but most desktops don't have a designated key for that)
mcsnwv 3 months ago
@mcsnwv that's interesting but, its the same monitor i had before it broke. . .
gladstonew 3 months ago
Long time watcher, first time commenter, yada yada.
Are operating system errors covered under warranty? The hardware is probably fine, and with the Windows disk you should be able to fix the problem yourself. I can offer help as I'm afraid I'm not of much use to be able to finance HBN.
