  • the height on that triple axel is amazing!!!

  • she jumps so high!

  • Monstruous 3A! She could touch the sky if she wanted

  • finest jump in the woman's event.. i think finest jumper in the entire figure skating history, including men and women, cause her jumps are super high...

  • これが今の真央ちゃんに連なっていってるんですよね…

  • She's competing again!!

  • 3A-3ってもう男子の技だし@@;

    やっぱり何度観ても伊藤みどりは凄いなぁ。

  • Flying tripleAxel!

  • Midori was a technical skater and could nail the jumps with such height and speed. She lacked Artistry though which is important for the overall result.

I liked Tonya Harding .She has it all Silly bitch though she could have made it if it were not for that jealousy! Nancy Kerrigan I dont think was quite good enough .

  • I think Midori is just simply amazing! beautiful combination!!!!

  • Whoa, Midori Ito is amazing.

Tonya seems like such a sweet girl here. Kind of sad, knowing what happened later on.

  • GOSH!! simply amazing ... cant put into words...!!

but i know one thing. this is REAL 3axel!!

  • @ 0:11 - uh, did Scott not pay attention to the Calgary Games? Debi Thomas' gold chances melted down in the last second and then again at the Worlds. Katarina wone, but both Liz Manley and Midori Ito scored higher than Debi.

  • Midori Ito and Tonya Harding are legends!

  • its nice how the american commentator didnt bash midori just because shes japanese

  • amazing. i just got my double axel, and that is so compelling! wow. wo wow wo wow wo wow

  • If Midori had landed the 3 axel in the short I think she would have won. She was a beautiful jumper (and her spins were ok to not great though) all that being said I still think Kristi was the better skater in terms of edge quality, musicality, and her spins were way better. Kristi was an awesome skater while Midori was an awesome jumper.

  • @ekmrlib: I disagree that Kristi's spins were "way better." Midorit Ito's spins were exceptional, and MUCH better than Kristi's. Kristi did have more grace; I will agree to that.

  • Well, there are packages - and there are packages:

    3Toe+3Loop+3Sal+3Lutz+3Axel = complete POWER package.

It's wonderful that there are so many clips of the matchless Midori Ito - any discussion of great triple jumps ends with her. She puts all but a few to shame.

  • midori ito's 3A jump is wonderful and textbook.. Way better than Mao, but thats 20yrs ago, let's face it, now, only Mao can and have the GUTS to jump a 3A even in a competition and is not scared to be downgraded or fall on her butt.. No matter what other people say. So I think we should give her credit for that..and it's feels so good to watch someone at the ladys doing a 3A.

  • Oh, she could also out jump Evan Lysacek!

  • 20 years later and she's still the best jumper ever!

  • Scott can say what he wants, but in this video we can see by ourselves: Midori doens't need to be acclaimed as the "complete package".

  • OMG u must be kidding me !! Midori's 3A is just simply amazing and excellent !! Look how high it goes!!! its's just amazing!!! Now this is a REAL 3A.

    Midori's 3A just buries asada's 3A!! U cant even compare them cuz Midori's

    3A is awesome!!

  • everything scott hamilton says sounds fake or untrue in recent years. getting worse.

  • @zzm47891 totally agree. he gushes over some skaters while putting others down and screams way too much. not everything has to be unbeLEEEEVVable does it? he is so bias and doesn't provide much objective commentating anymore.

  • Yamaguchi was a "small jumper"---her jumps were neat, clean, and quick, but small and not that impressive compared to Ito's huge and spectacular triple jumps that seemed to "hover" in the air effortlessly.

  • hahaha tanya

  • 0:52 di he say "Her cheap rival"?! Wtf man nobody has landed a triple axel triple toe loop "which has still not been equalled by any other female skater."

    Bastard.

  • @Lipstick745 He said CHIEF rival.

  • @Lipstick745 CHIEF rival

  • How sad is it that the ladies almost 20 years ago were doing more triple triple combinations then the ladies are doing now.

  • well ive seen better

  • I prefer Mao's UR triple axel. lol

  • She is like a twister...

  • I just noticed how Kristi-Midori situation is very similar to Yuna-Mao..Kristi with triple lutz-triple toe,(like Yuna) and Midori with the triple axel(like Mao)...

  • @jtl8787 wow i never noticed that...you're very correct on that fact

  • Double sulko is easier than an double axel - that extra turn gives you extra preparation to rotate., hence triple & quad follows

    former silver medalist

  • woah kristi, what r u wearing?

  • whats the hardest move on ice, is this it??im just curious

  • There are more difficult combinations than a lutz-toeloop, FigureSk8rxx.

  • The most difficult combination is axel-loop.

    1. Axel is harder than Toe Loop

    2. Edge to Edge is harder than Toe to Toe.

  • @FigureSk8rxx no, it's axel. you need the extra half turn to land it. So triple axel needs 3.5 turns in order to land perfectly.

  • @FigureSk8rxx nooooo way I have a lutz-toe in my program and its the simplist one .

  • lutz toe? single-single? thats easy. triple-triple is a lot harder.

  • The hardest jump landed in competition and ratified by the ISU is a quad toe loop. Evgeni Plushenko has probably done the hardest move technically in competition - a combination of quad toe loop/triple toe loop/triple loop.

  • Seems you've forgotten all those quad salchows landed over the years, which are more difficult than the toe, and a jump Evgeni has never landed. But he does have that quad/triple/triple.

Second most difficult jump combination ever performed, Nobunari Oda and his Triple Axel/Triple Toe Loop/Triple Loop. And it was a beauty!

  • That's debatable. When I was younger we always learned a salchow before toe loop, be it single, double or triple as a salchow was considered to be easier. I would have quad salchow on a par with quad toe. In my case, a salchow was definately easier, I never managed a triple toe in my life but could do a triple salchow.

  • @npe1 It's not debatable according to CoP. Quad Salchow has a higher base amount than a Quad Toe.

But I do understand what you're saying. Personally, I HATE the toe and the sal, but the loop, flip and lutz were easy for me. I landed an axel cleanly before I landed a salchow cleanly. And according to most experts, yes, the 3sal and 3toe are interchangeable in difficulty. But most also agree that when you get to quads, the no toe-assist makes the Sal more difficult. Though that is not 100%.

  • @AceNHobart axel.

  • she jumps damn high

  • Has she ever landed triple axel - triple toe in competition?

  • @Ugnele Never. She landed 3A-2T at competiton in France (Lalique trophy I think) 1991-1992 season.

  • Northeast I am so with you cannot stand Hamilton's commentating. He should be silent. Midori ...well she is too fab!

  • I've always been annoyed by videos that are narrated by Scott Hamilton. His voice drives me crazy!

  • and i thought my'n was high! :O

  • OMG!!!! that was about the highest, fastest, most awesomest triple axel i've EVER seend!!!!!!

  • holy shit man! that jump! soooo high!!!!

  • omg........... Ito Midori, she's the only one female figure skater who's able to jump 'perfect' triple axel.

  • PROBABLY the finest jumper? I didn't think there was any doubt, haha. She was just awesome.

  • @uwoeric tonya harding's is better. but still.

  • @schnisha95 Tonya Harding's was not better at all. It was always considered sloppy.

  • @uwoeric ooo agreed, but they have to be diplomatic

  • OH MY GOSH! Did you see the height on that triple axel! Wow! I mean WOW!

  • no kidding! absolutely fabulous!

  • Wow!

    Just... wow!

  • that was omg no words ughhh HUGE

  • wow! 3A + 3T the most difficult thing landed by any woman and many men cant still land it! kristi's 3Lz+3T was good too!

  • Kristy flutzed, so not, it wasn't all that great.

  • wow. very high qulity!

    midori ito 3A is Men's 3A!!

  • Ooh Kristi Yamaguchi had a strong double axel too, she should have tried for the triple.

Of course there's no comparison to Midori's, plus Kristi has a flutz, but she still nailed the triple triple.

I would be really interesting to mark this competition with today's judging and see who came out on top. God knows Liz Manley should have won Calgary in 88.

  • Scott Hamilton gushed over Midori when he commentated her 1989 world win. Funny how that changed once formidable American competitors emerged. Midori does a spectacular triple AXLE, triple toe (not quite your standard 3/3), and he says she's "probably" the finest jumper. And then, he ends by touting Kristi as the "complete package," an obvious jab at Midori. Whatever. Midori was incredible, hands down, and I thought her artistry was just fine, too.

  • Probably because he was a commentator on an American network televising the Olympics. I'm sure he got complaints from America-only viewers that he was too lovey-dovey on his analysis with Midori.

  • Granted, Kristi did much better on the other parts of the competition, and that's how she still won gold.

  • @cleoambrosia eh, Scott Hamilton is kinda of an idiot. He changes his comments about skaters every so often just to be politically correct anyway.

  • @cleoambrosia Isnt it because he's american? haha..... poor midori... lol but midori's jumps are EXTRAORDINARY

  • @cleoambrosia Oh give me a break! lol I swear, some of you people need to get a life! My goodness! Cannot take anything as a compliment and everything is a jab based on your own narrow-minded notions! and all over someone you don't know and likely have never meant as opposed to someone that has known her for over two decades.

  • omg that first triple was so high and AMAZING

  • Kerrigan sucks, Midori Rocks!!

  • ito was well ahead of her time. look at the height on that triple axel.

  • Ito was TOO ahead of her time. That's why she could achieve "only" one world title and one olympic medal.

  • Yep, she was clearly the best 1988 Olympics. That should have been her Gold medal.

  • YEP

  • You are an incredibly ugly person yourself.

  • How can you say that about a human beening that did things you only dream about?????

    How ugly are you inside?

  • thats true, she looks like a 1998 skater

  • It don't like how Kristi's skates. Midori is a complete skater and I don;t care whar people say.

  • Scott Hamilton is an idiot. Kristi is a wonderful skater on her own and I don't see why Scott has to tear down Midori in order to boost Kristi's reputation.

  • yuck it's harding

  • well, have to realize that Tonya had a rough childhood (being molested) and that scarred her for her life. Had she not been, who knows how well be would talked about today.

  • I didn't know that but it doesn't excuse her behavior:)

  • why isn't she competing at the worlds and imp competitions.. i don't remember seeing her at the 2007-2008 worlds

  • cuz this was way back then in 1992... midori ito was the first women to ever land a triple axel, and she remains to be the most amazing technical woman skater in history... no other woman has landed triple axels in olympics, nor triple axel-triple toe loop combinations in any competition...

  • yeah !! tx ! you know, after watching this video ( first video i watched about midori ito ) i watched other videos and i realised that was long time ago ... :) yeaah, stupid me :P i find her amazingly good though !! i saw some videos and i was like " WOW AMAZING " :D:D

  • i know... she was the most amazing technical skater, and nobody has accomplished what she did not even now... she could have easily done quads if she had wanted... i know that for sure... her only problem was the artistry, but she still amazing... and dont call urself stupid, cuz u rnt... i mean i started watching figure skating in 2005, then i didnt even know the difference between triples and doubles... but i've been learning since then... u r not stupid... :D

  • your right luchito345 , no other woman landed triple axel except for midori at the olympics! but for the next olympics 2010 we should see a triple axel from mao asada! but i doubt anyone, i mean any woman will land triple axel, triple toeloop this decade or maybe next decade! midori does it so amazingly!
