finest jump in the woman's event.. i think finest jumper in the entire figure skating history, including men and women, cause her jumps are super high...
Midori was a technical skater and could nail the jumps with such height and speed. She lacked Artistry though which is important for the overall result.
I liked Tonya Harding .She has it all Silly bitch though she could have made it if it were not for that jealousy! Nancy Kerrigan I dont think was quite good enough .
@ 0:11 - uh, did Scott not pay attention to the Calgary Games? Debi Thomas' gold chances melted down in the last second and then again at the Worlds. Katarina wone, but both Liz Manley and Midori Ito scored higher than Debi.
If Midori had landed the 3 axel in the short I think she would have won. She was a beautiful jumper (and her spins were ok to not great though) all that being said I still think Kristi was the better skater in terms of edge quality, musicality, and her spins were way better. Kristi was an awesome skater while Midori was an awesome jumper.
@ekmrlib: I disagree that Kristi's spins were "way better." Midorit Ito's spins were exceptional, and MUCH better than Kristi's. Kristi did have more grace; I will agree to that.
It's wonderful that there are so many clips of the matchless Midori Ito - any discussion of great triple jumps ends with her. She puts all but a few to shame.
midori ito's 3A jump is wonderful and textbook.. Way better than Mao, but thats 20yrs ago, let's face it, now, only Mao can and have the GUTS to jump a 3A even in a competition and is not scared to be downgraded or fall on her butt.. No matter what other people say. So I think we should give her credit for that..and it's feels so good to watch someone at the ladys doing a 3A.
@zzm47891 totally agree. he gushes over some skaters while putting others down and screams way too much. not everything has to be unbeLEEEEVVable does it? he is so bias and doesn't provide much objective commentating anymore.
Yamaguchi was a "small jumper"---her jumps were neat, clean, and quick, but small and not that impressive compared to Ito's huge and spectacular triple jumps that seemed to "hover" in the air effortlessly.
0:52 di he say "Her cheap rival"?! Wtf man nobody has landed a triple axel triple toe loop "which has still not been equalled by any other female skater."
I just noticed how Kristi-Midori situation is very similar to Yuna-Mao..Kristi with triple lutz-triple toe,(like Yuna) and Midori with the triple axel(like Mao)...
The hardest jump landed in competition and ratified by the ISU is a quad toe loop. Evgeni Plushenko has probably done the hardest move technically in competition - a combination of quad toe loop/triple toe loop/triple loop.
Seems you've forgotten all those quad salchows landed over the years, which are more difficult than the toe, and a jump Evgeni has never landed. But he does have that quad/triple/triple.
Second most difficult jump combination ever performed, Nobunari Oda and his Triple Axel/Triple Toe Loop/Triple Loop. And it was a beauty!
That's debatable. When I was younger we always learned a salchow before toe loop, be it single, double or triple as a salchow was considered to be easier. I would have quad salchow on a par with quad toe. In my case, a salchow was definately easier, I never managed a triple toe in my life but could do a triple salchow.
@npe1 It's not debatable according to CoP. Quad Salchow has a higher base amount than a Quad Toe.
But I do understand what you're saying. Personally, I HATE the toe and the sal, but the loop, flip and lutz were easy for me. I landed an axel cleanly before I landed a salchow cleanly. And according to most experts, yes, the 3sal and 3toe are interchangeable in difficulty. But most also agree that when you get to quads, the no toe-assist makes the Sal more difficult. Though that is not 100%.
Ooh Kristi Yamaguchi had a strong double axel too, she should have tried for the triple.
Of course there's no comparison to Midori's, plus Kristi has a flutz, but she still nailed the triple triple.
I would be really interesting to mark this competition with today's judging and see who came out on top. God knows Liz Manley should have won Calgary in 88.
Scott Hamilton gushed over Midori when he commentated her 1989 world win. Funny how that changed once formidable American competitors emerged. Midori does a spectacular triple AXLE, triple toe (not quite your standard 3/3), and he says she's "probably" the finest jumper. And then, he ends by touting Kristi as the "complete package," an obvious jab at Midori. Whatever. Midori was incredible, hands down, and I thought her artistry was just fine, too.
Probably because he was a commentator on an American network televising the Olympics. I'm sure he got complaints from America-only viewers that he was too lovey-dovey on his analysis with Midori.
@cleoambrosia Oh give me a break! lol I swear, some of you people need to get a life! My goodness! Cannot take anything as a compliment and everything is a jab based on your own narrow-minded notions! and all over someone you don't know and likely have never meant as opposed to someone that has known her for over two decades.
Scott Hamilton is an idiot. Kristi is a wonderful skater on her own and I don't see why Scott has to tear down Midori in order to boost Kristi's reputation.
well, have to realize that Tonya had a rough childhood (being molested) and that scarred her for her life. Had she not been, who knows how well be would talked about today.
cuz this was way back then in 1992... midori ito was the first women to ever land a triple axel, and she remains to be the most amazing technical woman skater in history... no other woman has landed triple axels in olympics, nor triple axel-triple toe loop combinations in any competition...

i know... she was the most amazing technical skater, and nobody has accomplished what she did not even now... she could have easily done quads if she had wanted... i know that for sure... her only problem was the artistry, but she still amazing... and dont call urself stupid, cuz u rnt... i mean i started watching figure skating in 2005, then i didnt even know the difference between triples and doubles... but i've been learning since then... u r not stupid... :D
your right luchito345 , no other woman landed triple axel except for midori at the olympics! but for the next olympics 2010 we should see a triple axel from mao asada! but i doubt anyone, i mean any woman will land triple axel, triple toeloop this decade or maybe next decade! midori does it so amazingly!

There are more difficult combinations than a lutz-toeloop, FigureSk8rxx.
Zuranthium 2 years ago 2
The most difficult combination is axel-loop.
1. Axel is harder than Toe Loop
2. Edge to Edge is harder than Toe to Toe.
GoBogi 2 years ago 3
@FigureSk8rxx no, it's axel. you need the extra half turn to land it. So triple axel needs 3.5 turns in order to land perfectly.

@FigureSk8rxx nooooo way I have a lutz-toe in my program and its the simplist one .
