Nitrogen is the best way for finding leaks. 300 psi pushing out is much better than 15 psi pushing in.

your camera issues may be due to removing the media card too soon and it corrupting the files.
dcskid most disposable cans now have a 1 way valve on them to prevent refilling
you may be able to make a tank from a 1 or 2 foot piece of copper pipe used for rain mains used in bathrooms and 2 end caps brazed on.
