  • those drills

  • I am a horn player so my knowledge on your techniques is limited. However I must say your sound coloration was something I could appreciate and admire. I really hope you can get a mic within a foot of you the next time you play this piece.

  • Wasn't there a trumpet player famous for "puffing" his cheeks? He played great so who cares. Music is expression. What's with the comments as if this were a high school solo/ensemble contest. A professor deserves better. Shame on you. If she plays her chromatic scale would that help?? OMG. It takes courage and guts to put yourself on the line and play your heart and soul for an audience. Anyone who does deserves our respect whether its a 5 yr playing "twinkle twinkle" or this solo.

  • great flute playing (i wish i was half as good Dx ) out of pure curiousity do you know where i could obtain the sheet music for this piece? hoping for a response ^^ thanks!

  • @jinandraven4eva Online at Ian Clarke's (the composer) website :)

  • Fabulous!!!

  • What school is she a professor at?

  • this is amazing!! out flute lesson teacher played this at the beginning of the year and its amazzing!!

  • OMG you so damn good!!!

  • I don't surely know what flute technique player has used. I have heard a lot of overtone, and i know playing overtone is really difficult. AMAZING!

  • awesome nin u rock

  • Ohmygoodness, this is amazing. Multiphonics are so cool(:

  • How did you learn the fingerings for the different multiphonics?

  • great job :D

i'm praciticing the piece now, but the first page is really hard to play in that tempo :(

i'm still looking for the secret how to get it right

  • Hi Nina I don't think this is your best video out there. You seem to struggle with projecting some of the basic extended techniques. Your flutter tonguing just makes your tone muffled, and the lower multiphonic doesn't usually speak! Your singing is also too soft, so it just sounds like the tone is distorted. This piece is a show piece, and the extended techniques are like makeup on a stage- better to do too much than to not make enough of it! Do you own an ant farm?

  • @TheOldCollegeTry so much hate. what makes you so authoritative on flute extended techniques? why don't you upload your own performance of this piece so we can see exactly what your standards are?

  • its so cool even though i dont play the flute i still can recognize good playing

  • I know this isn't a very recent video of yours but i just wanted to comment and say how awesomely you play this piece!! I've been lucky enough to meet Ian Clarke and actually listen to him play this live and he is phenominal but you totally do this piece justice!! :D

    Horsemad295 xx

  • I am familiar with these techniques - your tone sounds strange.

  • i know the techniques, its verry difficult, i know!! this is a great performance!! i love it!!!

    verry good!!

  • This is my favorite performance of yours! I love how it has great imagery! I can literally see the train moving faster and faster! Truly amazing Nina you out did yourself again!!=D

  • @bandnerd883

    thanks bandnerd!

  • @ninaflute ...u sound awesome.............

  • Would sound nice on a shakuhachi too. (Starts off like Haru No Umi).

Nicely done and Interesting techniques ... I better get practising ...

  • Is it supposed to rush?

  • Yes, it is. Hence "The Great Train RACE" lol

  • but she can't double tongue fast enough to keep up with her fingers.....

  • love this

  • Fabulous! Your videos are inspirational!

  • Excellent performance! Just wondering what the very first technique at the beginning you used was and how is it notated?

  • This piece just arrived in the mail for me today and I can't believe how much FUN it is! It's a great start for those of us who have had a tendency to shy away from multiphonics in the past!

  • Good job nina!

Wow. You should sell a high quality mp3 of this piece performed in a studio. I'd buy it.

  • You did an awesome job with this piece. I can't even begin to possibly imagine the difficulty of some of the techniques used. It would have been great to listen to this live.

  • Initially, this was not one of my favorite performances. I have found that usually when I intensley dislike something the first time I hear it, I listen a few more times and discover that I then LOVE it. Such is the case with this one. I love it! A good demonstration of the often disguised potential of the flute!

  • omg my flute teacher played this

  • Comment removed

  • Brava! You are possibly one of the best Flutists I have ever come across. Your technique is astounding!

  • considering that she is a professor of flute at a major university, I am preatty sure that she knows what she is doing...

  • You do an excellent job. I've only heard this one other place, and It was a little better, maybe just because it was live. Your great!

  • wow ur really gd!

  • what kind of flute do you use

  • She uses a 14kt gold Sankyo Flute

  • what are quarter tones?

  • the pitches between half steps

  • reminded me of shakuhachi, and trains

its like if you took the sounds of trains and shakuhachi music and combined them! Epic

  • WOW! if only i could tounge like that on my trombone!

  • Your amazing i tried to pull this off and it sounded horrible!!

  • really impressive!!!

  • wow~~I want tis music sheet can?? Plss~~~T.T...

  • BLOODY AMAZING

  • I heard Chris Potter play this song on bass flute last year, and I fell in love with it! This is a really difficult song, and you did great on it!

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!

I heard a college student play it and fell in love with it!!!

  • That is so cool *__*

  • Amazing!!!! o.O'

  • nice real talent

  • This is the coolest thing I have seen done on a flute.

  • i can't do multiphonics for the life of me. or flutter tongue. my braces hinder much of my playing. this is more than amazing. i looove your videos :D

  • Have you heard Ian Clarke play it?

  • i wish i could play like this!

you're amazing, ignore morons telling you it's odd sound:)

    this is fantastic:)

  • My all time favorite Flute player.

    :)

  • oh wow !!!

that is actually so amazing!! any idea where i could get the music???

  • omg so hard T_T

u gotta do singing and playing at same time so well.

    great great playing wow

  • you. are. amazing.

    i play clarinet, but omg.

  • Cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Beautiful! Nina's level of control over the sounds her flute is making is exquisite. I would love it if she did a tutorial video on flutter tonguing. I'm trying to teach it to a student, and I'm not very confident on it myself.

  • love it!

  • so cool at 2:17

  • I love how it goes across two stands and still hangs off the edges :P

    Amazingly done Nina, so amazing.

    Catchy tune too (: x

  • where can I get that song?

  • This piece is really cool and it demonstrates the cool tones a flute is capable of making if you dont just play the classical way. Someday Im gonna hav eto try this piece.

  • amazing...

  • thats why people don't play CDs at weddings. Digital music is a cadaver of song

  • Correct flute playing posture? This woman is a respected college professor, and ramrod-straight, parallel, stiff posture is to be observed in marching situations only. The fute really is a "front" instrument, and not a "side" instrument. Really what matters is the relative position of her lips on the lip plate.

  • You obviously don't play classical flute. You're probably stuck in your marching band or something.

  • you have been told twice, but ill affirm it, the only time parallel and rigid is in-style is marching. Concert/Classical/Symphonic

  • are you kidding me? you are obviously not a flute player if you say that. Only beginners would play a flute like that

  • Some teachers teach their students that way, mine did for awhile but then I got a new teacher..

But, she was just giving her opinionated critisism. No need to attack her. :P

  • so would you criticise sir james galway??

he certainly doesn't play with a perfectly parallel flute with a straight neck at all times. it stops freedom of movement and expression.

both this video and piece are amazing!!

    xx

  • The 'right' flute posture is the one that allows YOU to breathe freely and properly (you should be able to feel your ribcage move from the front, sides, and back), produce a resonant, open, controlled sound, and comfortably play with quick, stable technique. If you can't do all of the above efficiently without discomfort or excessive effort, something isn't right.

  • Didn,t Nina teach that in a video of hers?

  • It's entirely possible. I must admit that I've been a bad pedagogy student and haven't watched all of the teaching videos yet. :-/

I got the breathing info from an Alexander specialist, though.

  • Erm, nice. I also used some techn that i learn on chinese flute and uses them on flute. It was nice and i would like to learn about how to cycle-respiration o.O

  • i'd lov to hear this on violin....

not saying tht this wasn't AMAZING tho!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I also think the dynamic contrast near the end was amazing. <3

  • my former private instructor spoke about flutter tonguing, and I've tried it before, though I'm definitely not as advanced as you are. I always did wonder if there were any songs made that incorporated these techniques; it sounds awesome. =D

  • GREAT!!

  • that sounds incredible! O_O

  • how can you make 2 sounds on the same time?

  • MULTIPHONICS

  • Special fingerings, and very VERY controlled air direction.

  • Oh Wow, this peice sounds so amazing! and I guess the echoing sound makes it sound better since it sounds as if more than one flute is being played. I don't play the flute (CLARINET FOR LIFE) so I can;t like, argue aboot the posture even though I know flute posture is supposed to be parrallel to the ground, but IDK.

  • I never said that I was better than anyone. I think she is really good, actually. And to keep from slouching all she has to do is pull her stand up. It's not a difficult thing to do... I'm entitled to my opinion and if she didn't want people's opinions then she wouldn't put her videos up here.

  • If her stand was up the audience could see her... She was most likely playing for a small recital or her flute studio when she played this. I'm sure in a real performance situation she would have it memorized, plus she seems to be very "one" with the flute, so why does posture matter? As long as the airstream is supported and a desired tone is produced... who cares!? Just an opinion I have on posture.

  • Every professor I've had for more than fifteen years has told me to keep my posture straight and my flute up. Unless all those people were wrong, I think that I know what I'm talking about...

  • I know people who have "perfect posture" but are no where near as good as Nina Perlove, so unless you can do better perhaps you should keep your critisisms to yourself. She is looking at the score, how would she do that if she held her flute up?

  • "Unless you can do better perhaps you should keep your criticisms to yourself"

I think all artists welcome criticism, from professionals and amateurs alike. If they didn't, then they'd never improve. Opinions differ, that doesn't mean they offend.

  • It was either the right way for you personally, or you've had professors who hold to the philosophy that there is only one right way to play the flute (which in my book, is wrong).

  • It irritates the crap out of me when so called professional instrumentalists have such terrible posture!! It would sound so much better if you sttod up straigh, planted your feet and held your flute parallel to the ground... why do all professionals have such horrible horrible posture!?!?

  • i think the proffesionals know exactly how to best prduce their own sound. everyone has a different body, and there are many workshops about posture. check one out.

  • Yea, you're told to keep your flute straight in middle school but after that, when you develope your own sound and ability it really doesnt matter. It wouldnt make her sound better by keeping it paralell!

  • "It would sound so much better if you sttod up straigh, planted your feet and held your flute parallel to the ground... " if a musician really did that, then their piece would have limited expression and for a wind instrument, they would have a limited air control. Moving the body allows is actually very effective e.g. take the trills at 2.50, her movements allow her to add a very controlled crescendo especially at 2.55 and 2.57. Try doing that on her 11 second trill standing bolt upright.

  • Yes, but people have always told me that a high wrist when playing a piano will make it sound better. I've never, EVER done that, I've always had flat hands and I still sound (I hope!) good.

It IS all down to the musician's preference.

  • I don't see how it would make a difference. On the flute your supposed to relax and be relaxed, which is really hard to do when your a wax figure.

  • What makes the posture bad for her if she finds it comfortable?

  • I adore this piece so much! You played it wonderfully :) I plan on playing it for my auditions to music college in november. However I don't have a B foot joint, so I need to remember to get the C version! :)

Excellent and truely inspiring, Thanks Nina! xx

  • i'm playing this for my grade 8 tomorrow :S

    i'm well nervous lol

    im only 13 aswell :S:S:S

    ur amazing

  • oh man this is so awesome!!! when it sounds like a train whistle is sweet.. I've never made these sounds with my flute before :p Super super cool.

  • you're so amazing.

I wish I could play like you.

  • "I have to admit I am a little disappointed with how the piece comes through on the recording. My sound engineering does not do this very cool piece justice." Um, I know how much you hate the digital cd deal, but, er, how about it? Not that we would be looking for perfection - but might be cool to have in the car to kindda inspire while driving insanely through towns or along motorways...I think you are in serious need of getting an album out there & in serious denial if you haven't!!! CD Baby

  • Also reminded me of Evan Parker (Brit Jazz virtuoso) who did an album called 'Monocerous' based on the continuous breathing techniques of Arab and Sufi flute players - tho he was working on tenor sax it would be interesting to see if you think that could be done with the flute?

  • strav12:

The technique in flute playing is called "circular breathing." I don't personally do it, but some flutists do, and even on this piece.

  • Is there a reason (for preference or technique) why you don't use circular breathing?

  • Total and absolute extreme WOWness! Stunning!

  • this is absolutely amazing...i think you are one of the best players i have ever heard..this is also the coolest piece i have ever heard!

  • wow, i so want to be able to do this

  • i never get tired of listening to this!!

  • hey this is amazing skill wow :) beautiful piece- does anybody know where one can get hold of the sheet music?

  • awesome

my teacher finds this piece a bit difficult

    i think it's AMAZING

  • 2:20 is one of my favorite parts! Ita absolutely amazing! *claps*

  • hey that is seriously amazing and cool. just wondering, is singing and playing together considered as multiphonics? i learn the flute too and just learned what my conductor calls multiphonics.. is there a differnce?

  • Wonderful. Great job, Nina. Thanks for sharing.

  • Wow! Absolutely fantastic!

Do you think an eighth grader like me could possibly learn this piece with...five years experience? I'd love to learn it but I don't want to seem too amateur.

  • Just out of curiosity, How did you get away with not circular breathing the last part of the piece? when I was watching the Ian Clark version of the piece, he circular breaths it (which is very impressive in my opinion)

  • its wonderful. nina u r great

  • beautiful! just curious, I haven't watched a masterclass yet... but doesn't the multiphonic come from the human voice as well as the flute?

  • Sakio442: not in this case. Here there is no vocalization involved.

  • ah... thank you very much! I needed to know (darn music theory). I just started writing serious pieces for the flute. It is interesting to learn from the performer's view how exactly the intonation is formed as apposed to a composer telling him/her what to do. hahaha.

    again, thanks!

  • i think you are amazing!! how long have you been playing?

  • 66superduper88: I have been plying flute for 27 years!!

  • amazing !!! well done ,nina

    alex

    bucharest, romania

  • omg! i love ian clarke! im playing hypnosis by him as one of my auditions pieces

  • Bizarre piece!

  • Wow it almost sounds like 2 flutes are playing

  • amazing like usual nina your fantastic

  • I never knew that a flute could sound like that.

    AMAZING!

  • Very enjoyable and interesting piece and performance!

  • G'Day ! Thank you for your amazing performance. I really enjoyed !!!

  • That was awesome playing!!!

What was the little white wisp thing that flew towards the right at the end of your performance?

  • Really good! I couldn't tell though if you were using circular breathing towards the end as its indicated, but it sounded wonderful regardless.

  • Hello Nina!

First I want to say, great job with this challenging piece! I myself am working on it and want to perform it for a talent competition. (this question is open to all here as well) Do you know anything about getting performance rights for this piece or is this necessary? I really do not know the rules about copyrighted pieces and public performance and viewing. Any advice or direction would be very much appreciated!

  • that is SO COOL!

  • great,thank you

  • rather than say wow and !. I specifically liked this peace. The harmony during the singing section, as well as the articulation.

  • wow that is amzing toughing as a begginner i never knew a flute could make them sounds intentunally

  • Amazing, even my flute teacher can't play this! lol, I love it! You are brilliant!

  • omg... oh wow... unbelievable.. O.o awesome

  • Nina,

Superb as always. Thanks for sharing your amazing talent with the flute community. You are one of my flute idols!

  • YOu are so good. Are you using any fluttering or just double tonging. Also love your tone. I could never even think about playing this, even though i have been playing since i was 7.....

  • rarmas123:

I double tongue, no flutter except where indicated.

  • I got goosebumps listening to this. Absolutly amazing. I've been playing flute for 7 years and could never dream of playing like this.

  • Wow... as a string player (Viola player more precisely), I had no idea a flute could produce this much variety of sounds. It sounds great. Very impressive!

  • Eroick:

fast double tongue for the first page

  • I LOVE THIS PIECE!!!! I LOVE IAN CLARKE!!! I'm so excited that he's coming to Memphis for the Midsouth Flute Festival this year!

  • i had just started multiphonics and flutter-tonguing before I stopped playing the flute. Fun stuff! I learned some of the other stuff through my stint of jazz flute, but this piece definitely captures those skills in great detail. Using YouTube is a great idea to give basic flute lessons by the way

  • that was so amazing. that's such a cool piece.

  • omggg that was amazing!!!

  • My friend Rebecca is playing this piece. It is a seriously cool piece. I was just sat watching her. I didnt even want to attemp it!

  • Ian Clarke is sooo amazing. There's just such a variety....By the way....you performed this piece very well. I'm not so great with my extended techniques on flute....but I'm working on it.

  • wow.. its so nice.. ^^

  • wow! hey, can you do a video on multiphonics?

  • WOW!!!! That's sooooo cool! Do you know where I can get a recording of the piece?

  • Be a u ti ful

  • Overtone is so cool in such mysterious pieces. Sounds like,as they said, hypnotize xD. But this piece is kinda annoying. :P I don't know why but I don't like it but you perfomr it great :P

  • Now that's just cool...

  • I love this video. I want to learn how to double and triple tougue. Could you possibly post a video on how to? Is it a matter of breath support? I just can't get everything to work together.

  • Dear johnpf07: Stay tuned, I am working on my articulation videos this weekend, will post them soon.

  • Where did you find this music.

  • fluteworld dot com

  • My sister has been working on this piece, after mastering Hypnosis (completely different style of course). She had the opportunity to briefly work with Ian Clarke last summer and she certainly took a lot away from it! I'm glad to see his music getting out there; I couldn't find anything by him on youtube when I searched earlier this year.

  • Where can I buy this sheet musc?!

    please email it to me.

    j.brown09@hotmailcom

i've been looking and i cant find it.

    i would appreciate it.

it MUST be apart of my library.

  • This is very good. Wish i was this good

  • I'VE ACTUALLY SEEN HIM PLAYING THIS!!

  • That was the coolest thing I've ever heard in my life. I wish I played like you! I've got the tone, but not the technique. I'm gonna go practice!

  • I'm fortunate enough to have attended a flute day run by him, and subsequently met him. He's a most inspiring man. Oh, and I'm really impressed by your breath control on that timbral trill! Am I right in thinking it's second octave G with first trill key?

  • I just use the fingerings he provides on the score, no deviation.

  • Wow, this is brilliant! I love your interpretation of this piece, it's very different from the way Ian Clarke himself plays it. Do you have "Within..."? I highly recommend it!

Keep fluting, your music is very inspiring!

    ",

  • Thanks. I have not heard Clarke play the piece but I would love to. I am glad I didn't hear him before I played it because that way I was able to come to the score fresh.

  • can you tell me a way how to produce those multiphonics or do you know a site or something like that where it is explained? impressive playing

  • Did you read my comments on this video? The entire first page is played with "residual tone, i.e. the breathy noisy of the flute left when a proper tone is purposely not formed." Other secions use quarter tones, multiphonics, and singing while playing. It does not use traditional embouchure. I will be posting a video soon on how to sing and play at the same time. watch my other performing and teaching videos on proper embouchure and placement!
