I was just a non-rate Deck Force deck-ape, Duty Section III "The Dog Pound" 1989-1991. We just finished DF '91 before I went to Petaluma for YN school. I purposely delayed applying for school to make AES-AWS '90 and DF '91, Polar Sea was in an extended yard period during the summer of 1989 to early 1990 for installation of the "new" coring lab and J-bar on the portside main and 01 decks. My boss, then BM3 Gary E. Van Aller, recently passed from pancreas cancer. He was a BMC on the Texas coast.
I was in the original crew - a "plankowner" - of this vessel. We commissioned her in 1978. Although they're saying these boats are past their prime now, I still think of her as a powerful workhorse and a great ship.
