June Christy was my idol when I decided to switch to Standards from singing Top 40's in the nightclubs of HK. "The Cellar" in the basement of the now demolished Ambassador Hotel on the Golden Strip in Kowloon, HK where I worked nightly the last years of my career was a frequented of Pilots, Chefs, and the best kept secret of the Gay Community. Frank Sinatra, Shirley Maclaine, amongst other famous stars would stop for a late night drink while in HK. Those were the days!
June's joy in singing always illuminated her appearances. I've always wondered about her later Capitol recordings because the voice sounds deeper and rougher. Yet I saw her in person and that simply was not the case. She sang "Midnight Sun" in its original key and flawlessly. It was clear a gigantic audience at Arie Crown Theater in Chicago was very familiar with her music, too.
I work with singers and can tell you their voices don't naturally get deeper with age. The cause almost always is cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption. Sarah's voice did deepen dramatically but she used that change positively, widening her range down without losing the top notes. Ella practically lived like a saint so her voice stayed youngish. Joni James ditto (doesn't drink, doesn't smoke). The lowered sound isn't a result of aging largely, but of not protecting the voice.
@waynebrasler But I smoke and enjoy Pall M<all filter tips in the green hard ground box(the 75mmm's) and I swear by them. Check out my singing on YOUTUBE and support my career on my web and recorded dealish and I thank you because I anm differaent I always want to please my fans. Tht's what I am here for. Thn UU.
coronetave June Christy was one of the great jazz singers. Although her voice diminished somewhat with age,the depth and poignancy of her singing grew with the passing of the years. Nearly all of her recordings are worth collecting. Please post more preformance footage of this great artist.
These words are undoubtedly awesome...I'd love to find this kind of hour again someday before I drop...and these folks are just great...

Looking for anything on my father, the late Jimmy "Red" Borland, who sang with the Pastels in 1947 (Kenton's vocal group)...

Not always but as singers grow older, their voices tend to get deeper, of course there are exceptions, Ella, Dakota Staton, k.d. lang, sarah vaughn.
