  • They ROCKED THE HOUSE last night in Philly...had EVERYBODY out of their seats...

  • i can smell the reefa, through my computer screen. oh, and some pretty fine babes in that crowd. at least half of that audience, was fucked up on canabis..oh the 70's,man !!

  • great !!..but what a shame the sound quality is not better..

  • One of the greatest bands of all time....MANDRILL was it! I remember waiting for this particular segment of In Concert to come on.....it seemed like the hours just crept. Mandrill was without doubt one of the first and most successful groups to synthesize rock, jazz, latin, funk,r&B,etc.

Great clip of a great...great band(still bad I might add)....Thanks for posting Neftali....

  • Take a look at the crowd. Black and White together getting down to the funky sounds of Mandrill.

  • This is pure funk MAGIC!!! What a big sound!! Definitely the best funk band of the modern generation!! Man, I can't get enough of this stuff!!

  • GREAT CLIP!! Love the Buddy Miles-like vocal thing Neftali does at the breakdown. Mandrill forever!!!

  • This in not black music. This is great music.

  • Clap your hands and shake your booty....!!!!!

  • Yeah!!!! Doc, Rick, Coffee, Omar, Fudgie!!!!!

  • Wow. I was 12 when this came out.

Between them Chicago and Tower of Power, we're talking serious brass power!

  • @JonP1961 Don't forget about Brass Constuction

  • Growing up in The Bronx during the 60"s...attending Music and Art High School...and being exposed to the best music of all time - Mandrill was the guiding llight and inspiration for us all. Mandrill embodied evrything thing that was sacred about music, about being of color and about social consciousness. They did that while being and funky & experimental as well...there has never been a band like them, That's why I'm a musician today...Peace and Blessings Neftali !

  • @maroonsociety,

    Wow! That's so cool.

Such a high complement. Thank you so much.

  • @neftalisantiago You know I missed the group when it came to DC in 73 but I saw you I believe at Constitution Hall in 96. I tried so hard to get back stage to meet the Wilson brothers because when I was in the Army I was stationed in Panama on the Atlantic side from 69 to 1970 I frequented Colon just about every weekend. Wanted to talk about their Grandfather and the House of Wood. I have every album, my favorite group still today after 40 years.

  • @maroonsociety I SO agree...

  • Mandrill! I love you and I really appreciate your unique music. I'm only 15, but I think you're the best funk group in the whole world!

Peace and love, Tomasz from Poland

  • @Too0masz 01.Okt Fr A - Timmelkam - Mosquito

    08.Okt Fr D - Murnau Westtor

09.Okt Sa A - Wieselburg - roque in hall festival.

For those of you in Germany and austere I will be with Sorgente at these shows.

  • I am a young guy but a friend of mine introduced me to Mandrill and I must say that you guys are the best band in the world. The timing is amazing...

  • @colemanhaughbrook,

it's alway nice to here from young people.

timing in music is everything. good to see you recognize it.

  • I REALLY NEED TO SEE PART 2. I'm groovin' so hard to this music. I swear this group never gets old. Saw them at the Dell in Philly and they had the crowd rocking, and I must mention that they are STILL a sexy group of men.

  • @grandmyla

thank you so much. i'll bet your sexy too.

  • Duck Bro,

Go ahead and email me at neftalimusic@me.com.

  • Neftali: It's The Duck Bro - hope all is well with you and yours!

We wanna make the case for Mandrill being entered into the RNR HOF on our internet radio show during Black Music Month! would you please consider coming on and telling some of the folks what real music is like?

we are on from 6-8 EST monday thru friday...

either way brother, i love and respect the work you guys did!!!

    all the best,

    LBD

  • Would love to see this with the full intro. The transition left an indelible impression on me when I saw it on TV in '73...the energy is simply amazing. I've hunted for it ever since!

  • Jody808,

thank you for your years of support. It really matters to hear you speak those words. God bless you.

  • life long Mandrill fan since Composite Truth in 1973, thanks so much for sharing these clips

  • Sing it Neftali....!!!

  • Neftali, Thanks for sharing this fabulous footage. Growing up in New York back in the day (as I did) it was mandatory and a prerequisite to hangin' out that you be a Mandrill Fan. I got everything up tp Beast From The East and New Worlds. I was certainly Livin' it Up listening to you Brothers.

  • hey neftali!!!

i LOVE it, bro! thank you SO much!!

  • thelilblackduck.

    No thank You.

  • Mandrill had so much funk , the white people couldn't maintain and went nuts .. . .

  • I'm white and I LOVE funk ;D

  • I heard that these guys were medical professionals.

  • nubian47,

Only Ric Doc Wilson. A Cardiologist.

  • neftalisantiago, I have been a fan of Mandrill since the mid seventies and have always felt 'Can You Get It ' one of the greatest funk tracks of all time. Are the band still doing gigs? Will you ever come to the UK? Wonderful to correspond with you and please add some more of Mandrill's brilliant tracks if you can! :-)

  • cosmicdelight7,

It is very expensive for a band the size of Mandrill to go to UK. We where going to perform at "Jazz Cafe'" but the offer couldn't even pay our expenses.

  • Great funky band, LOVE there song Fence walk .

  • Baby, you can't help but move & groove when Mandrill plays. Just came off a road trip, had some music from the group, WHAT A BLAST! Tell me, is Susie Ceasar still a teaser, Can't get can't get it.

  • if you're ever in DC I'll give you a tour of the day program I work at teaching art, music, drama, etc. etc. to persons diagnosed with Autism, Down Syndrome, Mental Retardation...we have an amazing choir that Chuck Brown has jammed with.....we have a consultant who plays bass with them who used to play with Stevie Wonder, Mousie Thompson, Painted Man....let me know if you want a tour of the place.

  • jpmcredmond,

contact me asap about your choir.

  • thanks for posting these.

    Great Wax Poetics interview.

    Any videos of Positive Thing?

    The only band that mattered.

  • jpmcredmond,

No unfortunately. One of my favorite songs, Dougie our guitar player came up with the original idea.

  • Brother, anybody who doesn't think that listening to REAL funk is like having a spiritual experience only needs to check out the people at this concert. They are getting totally FUNKAFIED!

  • Neftali, Git it all was one of my favorites when I was a teen too, like the hat too!! Mandrill will always be one of mt top 10 groups of all time. Peace.

  • Dear GMONY5,

Thanks. I still have the hat. Also thank you for your support.

  • Thank you Mr. Santiago for your wonderful videos. I have loved Mandrill since the early 70s when I was a small child. you and your group are unbelievably talented. It's too bad that today's commercial radio does not have a place for this type of raw, organic music . The young folks today don't know what they are missing.

  • Dear bubblinbrownsuga66,

I totally agree. i am going to do all I can to teach young musicians and bring real music back to the radio.

  • One of my favorite Funk Bands! Amazing Multiple Musicianship! You got to love Funk Bands for that they combined latin, salsa, rock, blues and soul to create some AWESOME songs Carlos Wilson one of the members can play about 5 different instruments and sing now thats TALENT! THIS BAND JUST KICKS ASS !

  • My group in NY couodn't wait to play your songs back in the 70's Loved U and still do

  • We love you too!

  • i love this band. never thought to look them up on youtube. im gunna look up rhyno now

  • these guys used to get down, thanks for posting Nef-original member

  • Oh shit. Thanks for this great video. Mandrill is one of the most powerful bands i ever hear and now i can see them. Greetings from Spain. In this concert people is really gettin on trance through the music. I wish i could be there..

  • These guys did hard rockin' funk better than anyone!!

"Was Barbara Mandrill ill that night?" LOL!!!

  • Yeah, but I'll take Mandrill over Mandrell any night of the week. :)

  • Was Barbara Mandrill ill that night?

  • SinoYank,

    Your kidding right.

  • coke and weed

  • Man, they were happening! I still have one of their albums.

  • Look at the crowd!!!!! Everyone has their own way of movin to the funk. Pure undeniable energy.

  • Dear rjam1974,

It's funny you say that because it is so true. Everyone in the early 70s really went for originality in all things, it was so liberating!

  • The special thing about that energy is I could see a dude doing the "headbangers" thing, others would dance, othes would clap and so forth. Where did it all go? That was a multicultured crowd and I am willing to bet people were not worried about their life. Thats the way concerts are suppose to go.

  • Where did it all go? Too much TV and media telling people what to do, I think. Also, the music scene is saturated, how would a band like Mandrill get going now? Neftali, thank you for posting this stuff, I love it. Any footage of "The Road To Love"? My favourite Mandrill jam. Peace :)

  • Well, they would have had to have a music video to accompany them. Also, you noticed groups had time to develop their sound(i.e. EWF, Commodores) They are not doing that will acts now. Secondly, I don't believe creative control is with the artist. Late60's though early 70's rock/soul/funk/jazz acts were all about experimenting with different sounds from different genres. Today record companies are more about pigeonholding musicians.

  • i just discovered mandrill. composite truth and mandrill is are such damn funky records!!! love it

  • wow

i just discover this group , and only becouse i thought they had a cool name.

    they are freaking awesome!!!!!!

    yeeeeeee

minds me of frank zappa , and funcadelic

but his gruop seemS more "hapy" and straight forward

o well , KEEP ON UP MANDRILL!!!!

  • neftali, were you guys out before WAR came on the scene? If I remember you guys was my high school band of choice, but i don't remember WAR until my college years.

  • Dear philburrell,

    Sorry I have been away.

Mandrill's first LP was in 1970. Eric Burdon & War Released the first single in the spring of 1970 "Spill the Wine. So you are correct Mandrill entered the scene in 1970 as Mandrill. before War as just the band War.

  • More brilliant stuff. Black music today has to get back to this level of quality,

  • Glad to hear Mandrill it's been awhile,Thanks, peck ya neck/////

  • Hey Neftali!

It`s a shame that the video is cut off at the end, cuz as far as I know, after the harmonica solo, the band goes into a ferocious finish with horns blowing the shit outta everything - never heard such a funk fury ;). Am I right or is this only in the album version of the song?

    Thx!

    Jaka from Slovenia

  • Jaka,

yes their is much more to the song. I will be posting a full version soon.

  • Great stuff. We're big Omar Mesa fans!

  • Man, you folks are taking me back!!! Thanks for posting!!

  • amazing to see the legends posting on the site themselves ! Only discovered mandrill in my younger days in the 90s . thanks for the music !

  • One of the best funk groups, and one of my favorites. have seen them perform many times and they always gave you a KICK-ASS show....

  • only discovered Mandrill about 2 years ago through their echoes in my mind track (from Warriors flick & video game)

    True innovators.

  • Anyway my father died 2 years ago I miss him very much when I see this I'm also busy doing music but I got lot of struggle because of this world nowadays

  • Dear Kelyaum,

Sorry to hear about your father. Omar is not Moroccan he is Cuban. It's cool to hear a song from back in the day and remember what you where doing at the time. Lets see where you music is at. email me.

  • OOOw neftalisantiago you know I'm 24 years old my father used to play Mandrill when I was a child and I still remember the moroccan guy in the band he showed me on the cover from his LP the whole music man! this message is really too short to expresse my feeling to this.

  • funk in its stankiest form.i can dig it!

  • oh yeah!!! this is the REAL.

  • Dear boogieBadge,

The problem with artists today is they don't reflect real feelings. They just write songs based on a word rhyming with another word. Kanye West, Common", M&M, 2Pac, and a very few others open-up and bleed onto paper expressing real emotions and thoughts.

  • i wich i was 20 in 70s real music real people

    everthing was real back then

  • nje71,

I was 19 when I joined Mandrill. It seems that God gave us permission to explore life without deadly consequences. I was never a big druggie except for bush. We were at war i was a hippie and still am by the way. The 70s opened-up our spiritual selfs too. Music helped us say what the world was thinking. The 70s was a great error.

  • Mr. Santiago, you and Mandrill are the TRUTH! Why is there not a concert DVD of '70's Mandrill stuff? I'm trying to make something happen with WAR in that regard as well.

  • Fancy meeting you here. LOL

  • Yeah, no doubt! It's a small world wide web.

  • Nefti,

In the late '70's Mandrill played at my college homecoming. Thanks to you, Coffee Cave and the Wilson Bros., this 50 year old man has very happy college memories.

"Nuthin sweeter than the inner pieces...la, la, la, la, la, la"

  • Yea Touch 57,

Yea I remember playing allot of collages in 73-74. Collage students loved "Composite Truth". It's good hearing from you. Keep in touch.

  • Thank you neftalisantiago it is great to see that. Or kept silent to find these videos super rare. They are videos of the best time(period). THANK YOU VERY MUCH because I am a big French fan of the Mandrill. They came for the 1st time in France in 1999 and I was. They invited spectators to come on scene. I played maracas with them. A great memory(souvenir).

  • Your more than welcome.I was there in Paris in 1999 at the New Morning Club. It was a great gig. I got ill during the second night. Maybe thats when you got up I don't remember anyone getting up on stage with us.

  • You guys are great. It does my heart good to hear your comments. God bless you all!

  • Nice!!!!!!

  • Kick Ass!!!!

  • Excellent playing - Mandrill has always RULED

  • Damn, I bought all of your records back in the days. You where real cool cats...

Thanks so much for posting this clip, Mr. Santiago! Really enjoyed it.

  • Woah! Neftali Santiago himself!

    Thanks for this-

I'm always checking for Mandill music on here &

    this was a rare treat~

  • Great video , just wish there was more of it...

  • Groundhog,

There is some great footage of MANDRILL LIVE AT MONTREUX in 2002. We rocked the festival. I highly recommend buying this dvd. You can find it on line.

  • Neftali,

You are an awesome drummer, the funk is in your blood!

    Moises.

  • Wow! I hope they show this "In Concert" footage in its entirety next time around! I wish I could have seen this band back in their heyday. Great stuff so far!
