  • There are four variable weights in the human body, given your not growing.

    Fat

    Muscle

    Bone

    Water.

You can make the BMI for up by an entire unit just by drinking water.

  • How can this video have 8 dislikes? Are there some people that actually think a BMI calculation is accurate?

  • the body mass index also doesn't consider your bone mass either, some people have a large or smaller bone mass and size

  • I thing that the more appropriate chart for measuring ones level of obesity would be "body weight ratio" or "body weight distribution".

  • Well, I am always saying that one does not necessarily need to lose weight but BODY FAT. Certain volume of muscle weights more than the same volume of "phat" :D That's why I like to call muscles a "functional" weight. Fat, on the other hand has its uses, off course, but we live in a world of food abundance (at least some parts of the world) :( so the functional uses for body fat are pretty limited.

  • Yeah true, BMI was probably made by some skinny-ass doctors with zero muscle! It seems this guy, Steve Torano, says everything that goes against what the mainstream says. That makes me scared to trust him, but it seems like he makes sense.

  • @ikadir18 Thank you. Yes I do. :O)

  • If BMI's are inaccurate, why does everybody go by the BMI scale? I know that I need to tone up my legs and stomach (mainly my legs) because my legs are very flabby. :( My BMI is around 25, and the adult BMI chart said I was a little overweight. My waist is around 32 or 31 inches, so I'm not that fat. This scale caused me to think that I'm really overweight. How do I know if I'm really overweight or not because I'm confused? I'm around 5' 5" and I'm weigh about 155.2 pounds.

  • Why are people trying to lose weight the hard way? For the easy way that actually works Watch The Secrets Of Weight Loss on my channel.

  • PLEASE REPLY TO THIS I NEED UR INFO!!!!, ok so i was looking around my house and i seen oat meal. now this oat meal gots some healthy stuff in it and 6grams of protein for 150cals. now i lovvveeee tuna. and it has 15 grams of protein for 60 cals!!! now if i mis these two together to get 21 grams, and a tatal of 210 cals, i weight 160 pounds, but wanna lose till 150, should i eat this meal 5-6 times a day and to build muscle and lose fat, (i do 30-60mins of cardio 5 days a week), eggs in morning

  • How useful would multiplying BMI and fat percentage (perhaps call it Body Fat Index or BFI which is the kilograms of fat in your body divided by the square of your height in metres) and then thinking of a scale of which to apply, underweight, overweight. So say you were 72 kg, 1.6 m tall and had body fat percentage of 20%, you would have a BMI of 28.125 and a BFI of 28.125 * 20% = 5.625. I'm trying to think of extremes that this measure wouldn't work for. I know exact fat % is hard to measure.

  • Yh BMI is one of the worst scales out there. It doesn't take into account fat or muscle mass.

I think possibly the best thing to use at the moment is probably a combination of your weight and body fat. Electric scales are now available which can do calculate body fat.

  • BMI was originally designed for statistical averages which means the bodybuilders and the skinny-fats or dough on canes people are 'blended' together as one reading. You could say: Average BMI in the UK for age 20-25 has increased by 2 kg/m^2 since 2005. But it would be incorrect to say 'Arnold Schwarzenegger your bmi is 32, you need to lie in bed for 4 years and atrophy to prevent risk of type 2 diabetes.'

  • I'm 5 foot 5 and 162 lbs. BMI of 27 is overweight?? Yeah if you're a wimp with NO MUSCLE!! I am by no means a bodybuilder but I do have big chunky quadriceps glutes and calves. Yes I do have a bit of stomach, chest and thigh flab, and slight bingo wingedness on my upper arms. My waist is 33.5 inches and my hips and chest 36 inch.

  • My BMI is 15 and yet I still have alot of fat.

  • @winchesterxwolf you must look like a stick man with custard injected under your skin.

  • @TimpBizkit Lol that made my day XD

  • @winchesterxwolf I didn't mean to be mean but yeah it would be out of my reality to have a BMI of 15. At 5 foot 5 and 160 lbs I would have a six pack if my BMI dropped from 27 into the upper end of 'normal range'. A BMI of 15 would make me 90lbs. I could cut off both my legs but then I wouldn't be as tall and my BMI would skyrocket again!

  • @TimpBizkit Oh no worries, it really did make me laugh XD I am lucky in that I am just over 6 foot. But as long as we're all healthy and not in any danger of health problems and such, then I guess it's okay what our BMI is, afterall it doesn't neccessarily mean the same thing for every person :)

  • my says im 16.6

  • right on! BMI is such bull shit....

  • Wow, mine was about 32. I dont feel that fat though. I feel fine actullay though im about 210.

  • I like...

  • If my Bmi tells me im overweight but my body fat was normal what does that mean.

  • Body fat% and waist-height ratio are accurate ways of determining how fat or thin someone is. BMI is very inaccurate because muscle and bone density is heavier than fat. Muscle's 5 times heavier than fat, and bone density is twice as heavy.BMI can still be misleading if you're not muscular because the weight range of what's considered normal based on height is an estimated range, BMI went from 28 to 25 of what's considered fat and you have to lose or gain 8-9 lbs for your body fat % to change.

  • I'm having a hard time explaining to people I know that the BMI is not a good reference. They seem to find it hard to understand that muscle can weigh as much as fat can.

  • @Bekatowa I answered your question on my 5-26-10 BlogTalkRadio show. Go to BlogTalkRadio and search Steve Turano. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. The most recent shows can also be heard on my website home page (at the bottom) once it uploads. Tell a friend! ~Steve

  • @BodyPerformanceTV

what? he didn't ask a question. Ah I got it, this is random auto reply.

  • @usafshah Nope. Not an audio reply. I type them ALL! But there are people looking for answers that I have addressed on my BlogTalkRadio (.) show. When I bump into them while answering questions I try to point people there.

  • @BodyPerformanceTV Hey, I am 260, 6 Foot 5 Inches tall. I look trim thou, My Doctor tells me to lose more weight ! I will look like a Stick !

  • @Bekatowa muscle ALWAYS weighs as much as fat. 1lb of something always weighs 1lb of something else. muscle takes up less space than fat so muscle looks better on the body. thats why you can see someone that looks really fat but weigh lower because they dont have that lean muscle. and then yo use something wearing clothes that is skinnier with some muscle and you think they weight 180 when they actually weigh 200lbs because that muscle takes up a smaller space than that fat would

  • bmi is stupid body fat % is where its at

  • @dominater2156 So true! Theres also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Go there search & Steve Turano. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. The most recent shows can also be heard on my website home page (at the bottom) once they upload. Tell a friend! ~Steve

  • Yes, BMI bugs me. It is only useful maybe for children and people who are really out of shape. It would be impossible to measure muscle-mass with a formula!

  • No, it cant be used for anyone, its a dumb fucking computation that has nothing to do with a persons actual health or causes for weight.

  • Yeah, I agree.

  • @KingofStarfox Theres also more great info on my BlogTalkRadio show. Go there search & Steve Turano. The show can also be downloaded from iTunes. The most recent shows can also be heard on my website home page (at the bottom) once they upload. Tell a friend! ~Steve

  • @BodyPerformanceTV excatly. BMI is a horrible way of telling whether or not a person is overwieght.

  • what about body fat calipers? are they effective

  • Yes. Accurate to about 2-3%

  • What does bring me down is my height since I'm 4'10 1/2

  • Right now I'm 6'1", 260 pounds... too big, but I'm running and have dropped from 290 pounds 4 months ago.

I want to get down to ~195. I have a 34" waist at that weight.

According to BMI, I'd need to be 187 to be "normal," and my "ideal" weight is 166. I'd be emaciated at that weight. I wouldn't be "underweight" until 142... yeah right!

Problem with BMI is the formula:

(mass in kg) / (height in cm)^2

The exponent should be about 2.1 to 2.2... but it's rounded off for simplicity.

  • * height in meters squared, not cm

  • Your an endomorph.

  • my bmi is 26, im 5'10" 180 lbs and ripped as hell, but according to my bmi i'm overweight

  • @WIGTRON5000 yeah dont go by that im the same sitting at about 185-190

  • i look good for 6'2" 280 lbs but i feel better at 225. im so much quicker

  • That doesn't sound overweight to me!

  • Im 14, 4"11 and weigh 8 stone 5lbs ... not sure .. as my BMI says overweight.. i think so too =[

  • 9% for any women is VERY low. Low body fat for a woman is not really a problem. The problems come when the effort to achieve and maintain this body fat level effects eating, normal social activities and norlaml body functions. If you're not experiencing any negative effects I wouldn't worry.

  • Agreed but more accruate numbers are 15% or less for men and 22% or less for women.

  • Steve, I'm a woman and I'm about to drop under the two-digits body fat percentage. Today I measured several times with an analog caliper according to the three-fold-method. Result: 9.4%.

I feel like a million bucks, but do you think this is already too little?

  • The best tool to judge your progress and fitness level, in my opinion, is body fat percentage. It's very simple, it tells you how much fat, in %, you have on your body. For men, 6-8% is ideal. For women, 14-16%. ^_^

  • ideal if you're trying to be a fitness model. ideally under 15% for men and under 25% for women. your numbers are ridiculous

  • Dude this is great! I've used the BMI scale and I'm 5'11 and 205 now. It says I'm in the overweight category while all my friends tell me I'm getting too thin. I just wanna know how I'm considered overweight when I wear a loose 34 waist pants and jeans. I can bench 225 which is over my weight...boggles my mind.

  • Hard to say. It depends on if you're male or female and how much muscle you have. My BMI is 32 which is obese but it doesn't take into consideration my muscle mass OR my body fat levels.

  • You're right, because muscle weighs more than fat. BMI is not a good way of telling if you're overweight or not.

  • Terrell Owens is six two 220 pounds and the BMI says he is obese. lol

  • A LOT of people would be considered obese if they went according to BMI. My point is BMI is NOT the best way of determining whether or not someone is overweight. I don't know why I needed to say that again.

  • My body mass index is 21, is that normal ? I am 5'7" and 133 lbs.

  • The BMI scale says I should be at 205 pounds or less since I'm 6'4". I weigh 225. I can run for a long time, my hand speed is great for my weight, dunk a ten foot hoop, and almost bench my bodyweight( I'm Working on that). It's good to hear that the bmi scale doesn't match good with everyone. Besides, I don't want to be scrawny.

  • I'm 23 years old. According to the BMI, at my stats, to be in the "normal" range I have to be at 110-120. I have to lose 110 lbs!!!! This is my weight when I was freaking 10!!!

    BMI is load of bullocks.

  • I totally agree. The BMI is not a good standard of measuring fitness/health. Height and weight alone don't do it. Weight isn't even specified. Is healthy weight determined by muscularity or body fat. BMI doesn't specify this when it calculates this stuff.

For example, I'm 5'8 and 218 lbs and I'm classified as "obese", where I'm anything but! I can walk and jog for long periods of time and I don't gas out when going up stairs. Really, I'm just overweight.

  • I made a bmi site and program and I couldn't agree more with you. Its really horrible. Also alot of people are muscles. The best judgement are going by stomach and thighs, and possible man-boobs.

  • I couldn't agree with you more. The BMI is absolutely ridiculous in determining fitness. Glad to see that someone on youtube has some sense.

  • No offense dude, but you are obese! Not because of your fat, but because you have a lot of muscle!, So do I, oh well. Bodyfat measuring is probably better, however, people that don't have a huge amount of muscle SHOULD refer to the bmi index!

  • So true!!

BMI is next to useless as a determination for fat/fitness levels.

  • Yes that scale is old, i cant believe people still use that.

  • @TheBiggestWolf Maybe BMI's are still being used because nobody came up with a new weight chart. Maybe the doctors did, but I'm not exactly sure. The BMI chart said I was overweight, and my muscles are weak. For example, my upper thighs are flabby, and my muscles are weak in that area. I don't have an immense belly, but I have some fat in that area. Actually I'm confused on whether I'm overweight or not because everybody said different things about my weight.

  • I found out my BMI is 25 which makes me obese. But hes right, if the pants and shirts feel tight, probably gaining weight and need to take some off.

  • 25 is not OBESE, it's just ''overweight'', 30+ is obese

  • You Rock!

  • The BMI scale doesn't take into account the amount of body fat and muscle you carry. I'm classified as obese, even though my body fat % is much lower than average. It works for average people, but not bodybuilders.

  • man you're the best!!

  • no it doesnt convince me not to use it. i still will

  • bmi scale is Bs for some, but for average peepz its a good measurement.

  • The BMI calculator doesn't like me-my BMI is 41, but people just think I look normal.

  • really? 41?

  • People think you look like a boot and are a piggy CutefuzzelyWuzzely!

  • haha very entertaining and insightful. great work and best wishes

  • So what you're saying is, the BMI scale is a load of BM.

  • very comforting, and its nice to hear it from someone who knows what theyre talking about!

  • Damn right!! I have some body fat monitor scales and they're the biggest waste of money ever. I type in my weight and height - 19 stone and 6"7 - and they tell me that i'm seriously obese, but in actual fact i'm just a muscular person!

Keep up the good work Steve!

  • Great vid, great humor!

  • Not olny BMI does not consider lean mass, but also bone structure.

  • Isn't body fat percentage just as important as a scale?

  • Well,.. I think for the most part the BMI scale does give the average person an idea of what they need to weigh to be within a healthy range. Then putting your fat percentage into check and reaching a healthy percentage of that as well. Most BMI calculators give the disclaimer that it's not accurate if you are pregnant or very athletic. Unfortunatly, for most of your viewers Steve, the BMI scale is a good tool.

  • (In a nutshell as I'm lacking of sleep)

BMI is only a guideline, really. However, you do send a good message. A BMI should not determine the way you see yourself.

  • A BMI scale is used to determine the general population. Not everyone is a bodybuilder, some people are naturally very slim, and will show up an underweight. The BMI is just a general scale used for diagnosing a problem. To be clinically diagnosed with obesity, or diagnosed underweight there are more factors involved. However self diagnosing with a BMI scale is redundant, it was not built for this purpose.

  • the bmi scale is as useless as heart rate monitors

  • yep, you can be ripped at 5% body fat and on BMI be extra fat the same time!

  • Another great video.

  • BMI = Big Money Industry. :-) Steve rocks!

  • the bmi for people who are inactive is relatively ok. but yeah my brother has muscles and works out all the time and says that he is obese and hes not even overweight. crazy.

  • Isn't it misleading to dismiss the BMI scale out of hand without explaining that it actually can be useful in conjunction with a body composition assessment? Height and weight figures alone do not provide enough information to make the BMI scale useful. But a good body comp assessment would give you the lean/fat ratios that allow BMI scale to help you set a goal. No?

  • Isn't body composition assessment similar to taking into consideration your muscularity?

  • So you mean it's useless to consult the BMI unless you know your lean/fat ratio? I didn't catch the distinction.

  • DIE DIE BMI

  • The BMI scale is very much flawed and isn't very reliable. I really enjoy your videos Steve, your straight forward approach is refreshing. I'm so sick of seeing these diet commercials on TV or exercise infomercials, they're ridiculous and based on lies or diluted truths. It's unfortunate that America's fitness problems are being exploited by big business, companies that don't care what's best for the consumer, it's all about profits.

  • Thank you for the video.

  • woot second comment

  • great video. screw the BMI scale.
