  • I found this so moving and profound.

  • Art is anything people do with distinction.

  • the dislikers are negative people who don't get it..

  • I thought this was going to be about $cientology

  • You need to see this video alteast 2 times to appreciate what she wants to convey to us !

  • Very inspirational, truely! Sometimes even the bad things in life could be thought of in a good way and one can learn so much from them. i had a traumatic experience three months ago, but it dealt with philosophical ideas and belief in God. Was very painful, yet i leared so much from it, much more than i would've if i haven't gone through it.

  • Some of these people are IDIOTS!!! My son, who is now 5 months old, was diagnosed at 10 weeks of age with a rare form of cancer called neuroblastoma. People, have compassion. You never know when you're going to get hit with something like this. So what if she's in marketing. She has a job. She overcame this cruel disease. God bless her. She didn't ask for this cancer.

  • Call me weird, but when she said a lifetime supply of good drugs, I was thinking of the illegal ones. Pharmaceuticals have way too many side effects. And the illegal ones, the average person knows the pros and cons of.

  • "It is only in the face of death, that we value life".

  • i like the rolex part, realy interesting

  • She's in MARKETING. She doesn't know the difference between bullshit and spirituality. She says that this strengthened her FAITH? Faith in beating the odds? The blastoma saved her -- from herself. She took 8 weeks off work and all her family and friends showed her how much they loved her. What if it was ... a car crash, diabetes, an amputation, attempted suicide. I have no doubt she thanks God everyday she wakes up. But does she really know for what?

  • @MeredithBixby

where did she say she believed in god?

  • that was beautiful,...

  • This is not TED.

  • In some countries it wouldn't come with such a steep price. Luckily I live in one of those countries, if it would ever happen to me.

  • I dont necessarily agree with everything she says, but let's admit her positive attitude is admirable and worth learning from

  • This "be positive about everything" kind of attitude that is so stereotypically "American" borders on the parodical at times.Yes, being faced with something as gravely serious as cancer might give some a new perspective on life and make them re-think how valuable it is.If it kills you, though, what is that short renewed appreciation of life really good for? What about all the people who slowly die in agony from cancer and are honest enough to admit it's hell? Are they wrong?

  • @Mogura87 Its not a polarity of right or wrong it's about changing perception for it's the only thing we can control and decide on, it just allows you to question your self, how do you want to live with what's been given to you. No right or wrong answer, its a matter of choice.

  • @caaaakee I just don't see how this ex-brain tumor patient is supposed to change people's perception of life for the better by doing a sentimentalistic talk in which she says "I wish this gift for you". As though the only way to achieve happiness in life is to have a near-death experience or listen to a pep-talk of someone who had it. Yes I'm sure people question themselves for 2 minutes, then go on living like they always have without thinking much. I just don't believe in this Dr.Phil-crap

  • @Mogura87 Actually she said that she wouldn't wish this gift for you. And as others have mentioned it's more that one looks beyond the surface of the initial situation.

  • @Mogura87 Actually she said that she wouldn't wish this gift for you. And as others have mentioned it's more that one looks beyond the surface of the initial situation. The thing I think is to not reject experience.

  • @Mogura87 You're right, this talk isn't supposed to change perception. It is pointing you in a direction, opening up an idea that can come out when one is faced with adversity, to see it in a new light that will change their perception. Its just opening up perspectives people aren't used to. It isnt about perpetuating an idea to polarize one we're so intuitively used to following being suffering and misery, it is to propose the fact that you do have a choice over the two.

  • This video reminded me of my wife's attitude when she was being treated for a brain tumour. Unfortunately, my wife didn't survive her illness and past away 5 years ago today. However, her bravery and humility were an inspiration to all her family and friends; permanently changing our attitude to life. Thank you Ms Kramer for reminding me of the amazing courage of my late wife Sonja. Good health and Namaste to you too.

  • why are people taking offence? completely missed the point here...

  • Thanks so much for sharing. I do have abain tumor too. There are very bad times...and also this: what Mrs Kramer is talking about. Is good to know that we are not alone...

  • I think people are completely missing out on the point of the video. It's not about convincing people how great cancer is, or what a gift it is to get cancer. NO one wants to get cancer, and it is certainly not a gift. What she is trying to convey is a positive attitude, with hindsight, all the things that she got out of this experience that probably would otherwise have never experienced.

This is truly inspiring and motivational. Thank you for sharing, Ms. Kramer!

  • @leadershipcouncil How are we supposed to get inspired by this? "Oh, how succesful you are, who turned something as negative as cancer into something positive. I feel so much more spiritual, humbled and grateful for my life now". Such a message is just a cheap cliché used by corporate America to brainwash people into becoming more productive and complacent consumers to whom even cancer is a "positive learning experience". Sentimental morailist pep-talks from "survivors" don't fool me

  • @Mogura87 I'm sorry that you didn't find this inspiring. I truly feel sorry for you. I don't see how this video is remotely related to consumerism or brainwashing people, so quite frankly you're illustrating a very weak point here. Then again, even if this is brainwashing, it has a positive impact on most people.

  • @Mogura8 cheap cliché is you saying that life is hard and not inspiring, cheap cliché is you trying to criticise and blame it on consumerism....that's cliché ..can't wait 'till we me meet on the other side..you'll see the real deal :) I'll be glad to see it with you

  • I don't understand... What's with all the hate? This woman went through this! She said herself she does not wish this "gift" upon anyone, but this so happens to be the thing that changed HER life. It gave her new perspective for life and its beauty. She gain a new sense of appreciation she never had until she realised her life might be cut short.

I'm sure the people who watch TED can understand the message behind this... But I, for one, definitely do not understand why you guys dislike it!

  • This video is boolshit and should not be on TED, i m sorry to say this but this is video of TED fail for the first time.

  • She prolly wouldn't have had cancer in the first place if she hadn't injected her face full of Botulinum toxins.

  • Sorry, but I don't have faith in Faith...

  • The English language lacks the words for me to accurately impart how much this woman makes me fucking vomit.

  • Faith. Pffffft.

  • why is this at TED? this is something that belongs in something like chicken soup for the soul, but I wouldn't know, I haven't read them :)

  • .......... This was not enlightening or anything, Fuck faith btw.

  • insignificant and overindulged. Fail

  • Not only is TED posting patter now, but they seem to be able to manipulate their Highest Rated Comments section to ignore the comments that have actually been rated the highest in favor of comments that mention their sponsor. This is in incredibly bad form. Congadulations TED you've now reached the ranks of information manipulating duche' bags. !MAKE MONEY MONEY MONEY! MAKE MONEY MONEY MONEY!

  • If TEDtalks is going to cover cancer, I'd rather see talks about new tech developments and treatments, thanks. It's not that I'm not glad for this woman, but this is a sensitive topic for many who have lost or may lose loved ones, myself included. I don't think there's any reason to embrace the fact that we're still very much in the dark ages in treatment options of certain cancers... still a dicey game of Russian roulette in many cases.

  • i don`t get it. she lists all the awesome things that cancer gave her and then says she does not wish anybody would have cancer. what am i suppose to think about it?

  • @unkaodya its about reconsidering what something negative might mean. and starting to look at the dark parts of life in a more lighter tone. to realize that what she had wasent a death sentience, but a reason to rethink her life. she doesnt want cancer to be the reasons other do it. but to do it regardless. to strive for growth and change. the TED conferences are about growth and change.

  • That was an awesome speech--short but with a huge impact. PS Rolexes are for douchebags

  • @orangepeelpeel This video made me want to put my testicles in a microwave. I want this gift that she speaks so highly of.

  • @orangepeelpeel What impact? And for that matter... what speech? All it was is this: "I've had surgery and even though I took it for granted or even worse didn't notice it before I realise I have a lot of people who care about me in my life.". That speech is a reason to stop being friends with her if anything.

  • consider it a gift. unless, of course, it kills you.

  • My friend Sean had a brain tumour and he didn't spout any of this shite.

  • Sensational videos Ted

    Cheers

    John

  • I have no idea why this inspiring speech about learning from a tragedy is viewed here so negatively. If someone really is thinking that this woman is acting or feeling superior because of her tumor they should really shut down their computers and spend a few years learning how to be a human being before coming back.

  • @khatack Well said!

  • Is she talking about the best plant of all time...Cannabis?, because up until about two minutes thats what it sounded like to me!, but then the brain-tumor bombshell...BOOM, yes yet another reason for Cannabis to be used.

  • 3-minute presentation.

    3-minute advertisement.

    For a non-TED talk.

    Seriously?

  • The Pink Ribbon campaign is also a faith based organization that pools in millions of dollars for awareness, we KNOW what the fuck breast cancer is and how to detect it, how about they just start curing it? Hows that for a damn idea? Surviving a traumatic experience doesn't make one spiritual, perhaps thankful for living but not spiritual.

  • That Rolex ad was deffinately the best part of this video and furthermore the only part of this video that has ANYTHING AT ALL to do with TED. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design... which this video quite clearly doesn't fit. TED's motto of "Ideas Worth Spreading" isn't represented either as this clearly isn't an idea to start with... Ýay for surviving cancer but wtf is it doing in this channel.

  • Dear TED. If you can't find someone decent to do a talk - then don't do a talk.

When I subbed to this channel bullshit like this didn't happen.

  • I have a Rolex Date from 1960!!!

  • I would be so happy about paying £20,000 to be told that I am a lesser human because I have yet to have cancer.

  • this was the shittest ted talk yet. she said it was a gift but she didnt say why it was a gift. yeah ok we get it - coming face to face with death can be a life changing experience. TED is supposed to be about NEW ideas yes?

  • Poor woman, she must be sad about all these coments. We are nto against her or her story, in fact we do simpathise. The problem here is this being on TED. Its like having musicians on political discussions or rap singers arguing on CERN vs Tevatron

  • What's wrong with you guys? She survived cancer and her life changed meaning, something to think about.

  • @bayXSonic how did it change meaning? she didn`t say anything interesting. my cousin died because of cancer, she never got the chance to get lifetime suply of great drugs or meet new people. this is one lucky woman ans she didn`t even explain why is she feeling so lucky, how did the treatment go, what exactly changed in het life? this was uninteresting ans as deep as disney movies.

  • This was the worst TED video I have ever seen... What happened?

  • Is TED becoming a victim of its own success? Almost all the talks were great once upon a time.. its going down hill fast.. oh well..

  • hopefully they will not sell this to Rolex as a super ad success- 16.000 visitors in three days - that would mean more such nonsense talks (plus annoyed comments): exhibiting and exploiting people in vulnearable situation is completely unethical -without any benefit for anyone in this case- except business

  • I think this talk could have been better if she'd had more time. I don't think I've ever seen a TED talk with more dislikes than likes before. It would be good if she could be invited to TED again or to a TEDx event and be given a longer time limit so she can expand on her idea more. The last few seconds of her talk were good.

  • @blueskiesmev I agree "Blue skies mev" ? whatever the fuck that means. She needed much more time. Perhaps she could get a Rolex Oyster or a Submariner or lash out and grab a Deep Sea Special. I think this was worth my time Ted because I really liked that ad.

  • Put simply: This is NOT why I watch TED videos.

  • @PrecambrianLullaby *facepalm* As of right now I'm surprised to discover that one of my comments is now featured in "highest rated". Although I'm flattered. It only has 9 green thumbs. The absolutely highest rated had upwards of eighty... WTF is going on here?!

  • @PrecambrianLullaby *sigh* ...whatever.

  • @PrecambrianLullaby then you're a tit.

  • A good sentiment on perception. Heart warming and hopeful. But completely not technological, has nothing to do with design, and I can get the same entertainment from a Hallmark card. I was under the impression that the 'E' stood for education... guess I'm eating THAT assumption.

  • Yeah this is a "gift"... but... "you're ok now (cry)", so if that was such a gift why don't you wish it on us? cause of the 55k$?

If that was such a gift, why bother treating it? why not accept your "gift" and accept death? that would be for free, as all "gifts" are.

And the rolex ad in the end was the best part.... hahahaha

  • @infernalgr yeah i've noticed the growing appearance of rolex on TED talks - the whole thing is designed to save the planet yet they spend 5 minutes at the end of each new world order talk with a reminder of the old one - spend your money on crap instead of saving starving people.

    bollocks.

  • We all have faith, to one degree or another, but this is completely disrespectful to those who weren't lucky enough to survive the "gift".. and those who survived them.

This is quite inspirational in venues other than TED. They should have known better.

  • TED talks are in steady decline.

  • We get it, lemmons, lemonade. Pointless.

  • TED, in an attempt to get the "faithed-ones" involved, has crossed the border into tastelessness.

This "let us be thank god for the diseases", religious attitude really stinks!

Dear TED Talks manager, this is totally tasteless!

  • There is no excuse for this from TED, even if it is only the ambient mentality is being reflected here. I am full of appreciation that cancer is a traumatic and life changing scrape with mortality. A gift, no. Show some respect for sufferers who do not appreciate being pressured into the 'smile or die' attitude (Barbara Ehrenreich explains in her book), and for all who have been less fortunate.

  • I get that it's sad, and somewhat inspirational, but I feel like I've wasted 3 minutes of my life.

  • Wait, is she talking about the John Travolta movie?

  • fuck faith and spirituallity. it's good that she survived, and it's good she found good in such a bad thing, but damn TED this is just disappointing.

  • I dont get it either..

  • Today...

    Look for it...

    Find it...

    Keep it...

    Cherish a love...

    Lucky you...

    Oops...don't forget to hug back...

    ...Aronne

  • I don't get it...

  • Tomorrow from TED: 'How the Indian Ocean Tsunami Made Me a Better Person'

  • What a load of BS. Cancer kills people, bitch.

  • "faith" puke, do i really have to watch the rest.... c'mon ted.

  • i want my 3 minutes back

  • @LogicvsFaith YDI for making a choise as a thinking human being.

  • @tetrica Today, I decided to click on a Youtube video about a cancerous gift. I can never take those three minutes back. FML.

  • @LogicvsFaith So why did you watch all of it?

  • @tetrica I have enough respect to hear someone's presentation and then decide for myself wether i agree, disagree, like it, or dislike it. As you can see, i didn't like it. Not because of it's substance, though i joked about it, but because i enjoy hearing about innovative, informative and inspirational talks that i've come to love from TED. In my personal opinion, and from my own personal perspective, this particular talk didn't meet those criteria.

  • @LogicvsFaith Suddenly you decide to present yourself as a thinking individual? to late, man. "I want my 3 minutes back". that is clever, intelligent and quite individual.

I don't mean to attack you, but the mentality you support by using that sentence is appalling.

  • @tetrica i'm presenting myself as who i am. If a professor starts a class and says "this subject sucks" and then proceeds to give an excellent lesson on the subject, does that negate his intelligence? I could have said that I have a man crush for a purple hedgehog, but does that take away from my personal opinion on the topic?

I can be as intelligent as i want and say as outlandish things as i want, that's life.

  • @LogicvsFaith Thumbs up there, but still; This professor is using the statement "This subject sucks" as an opening for his spectators to gain perspective of his lesson. While all you do is to spread a lousy attitude and a unoriginal quote that does not give to anyone reading it. You could've just as well written "I like ice-cream", for it holds just as much interest.

  • @tetrica I once had a teacher who started a math class by throwing her calculator out the window, then telling us that 80% of what you learn in highschool math is not applicable to real life situations. However, she then taught an excellent lesson on maths that can be used in practical situations.

It doesn't matter what analogy i use, the answer in the end is the same: I can say whatever outlandish, joking statement i want to as long as i have a valid opinion on he subject. Which i do :)

  • @LogicvsFaith It does matter as long as you "valid opinion on he subject" is not showing. All you then present is a petty try to voice you opinion.

  • @tetrica Tetrica, now you are only arguing with me for the sake of arguing to prove a point. I have answered with concise points, and reasoned logic. The root of our debacle here was me not liking the video. And i don't. Simply because it's not what i personally find to be innovative and advancing. If she had show ways to treat brain cancer or shown new information about it, then i would have liked it more. I have empathy for her, i simply dislike the video based on no new information.

  • @LogicvsFaith I do believe we hold the same values and that if we knew each other in the real world, we would be friends.

All I am arguing is comments like "I want my x minutes back", because I find them stupid and not giving to the people who read them.

  • I agree, it's very inspiring. I don't think it's narcissistic at all.

  • i taught a healing class for 2 years. it's very important that the students did NOT think of their illnesses as "gifts". it displaces their drive to rid themselves of the disease. much like the hostage becoming friends with the captor. it's a natural meme that results, but it is counterproductive.

DO NOT THANK GOD OR NATURE FOR BECOMING ILL.

  • I'm completely lost as to what she's trying to tell us here. My meningitis wasn't a gift, I'm completely deaf in one ear and my brain functions abnormally, YAY! what a great gift, this is such pretentious shit.

  • blablablablabla who gives a fuck?

  • Is TED making money now? They used to have such great talks. This one was a new low.

  • @harmonicazhin Precisely. Those whose entire lives change after a cancer/tumor/incurable disease diagnosis were simply living horrible lives before.

And I'm interested in exactly what kind of "thought" goes into becoming "more spiritual" after said diagnoses. I mean, what kind of terrible misdeeds must you be guilty of to "deserve" the "gift" of months, years, or a lifetime of suffering?

  • @harmonicazhin Yeah, I'd rather have the watch. Enlightenment I'll hope to achieve without fatal diseases.

  • @harmonicazhin

Did you even watch the video?

  • @harmonicazhin no shes not. shes saying to re-think cancer. to realize that it isnt a death sentience but a time to re-evaluate your life. the things that happend to her are possible. shes sharing her experience not saying that shes better then anyone else. that would be just as much of an ignorant assumption as the one you admonish her for.

  • it's a gift from the flying spagetti monster!

  • @tonyLA24 The Flying Spaghetti Monster is not this cruel!!

  • I understand the message she tries to show us, but I'm disgusted by the way it's commercialised. You'll have a life time of drugs and 8 weeks of vacation?

I appreciate that she tries to share her life-changing event, but the message could have been shared in a better way.

I'm glad she made it through and I hope people who do have to go through this, survive and lead happier lives than before. I also hope that nobody has to go through anything like this.

  • I've never wished for someone to shut up so much in my life.

  • something died in my tummy last night and holy fuck what an unexpected gift I just left in the can, i hope the next person who goes in will be grateful for the smell and blocked toilet.

  • the comments here are quite funny, creative and observant though.

  • Why don't we make Breast Cancer Awareness into just "Cancer Awareness"

I guess "Save the Ta-Ta's" is more marketable than "Save your colon, stomach and testicles"

  • Please say she doesn't spend her life going from school to school giving this speech to kids. I wonder how long she has been doing this shtick.

TED is reaching new lows--think I will unsubscribe. I prefer quality over quantity.

  • worst speaker i've seen on TED

    what the hell was that?

spirituality? nirvana? when did TED become a heaven for pseudo science bs?

she's alive because of the wonders of science not because of her "spirituality".

  • The gift she got was her life and it was science that gave it to her. She's a direct beneficiary of those standing by the scientific method. Unfortunately, this lady is so busy thinking about herself that she's totally forgotten why she's still alive to begin with. Also, why is she talking at TED? I've noticed an increase of pseudo intellectual speakers (Who can forget "His Holiness" the Karmapa?). I wonder if the bullshit people are lobbing at TED? Who's next? Deepak Chopra? C'mon. I dare you.

  • Noticed the six-inch heels and couldn't make it past the 23 second mark. Are you fucking serious putting such a ditz on TED! Goodbye TED!

  • This was a creepy talk. Wes Craven and Black Box TV creepy.

  • In 2020, the Rolex deep earth timepiece with the solid titanium caflapels descended to the center of the earth's molten core, and Rolex was like "we are the mother fucking KINGS of watches!" In the meantime people had stopped using watches and used their cellphones and ipods instead.

  • My wife battled leukemia for 10 months, including a stem cell transplant, for the bargain price of nearly 2 million, and what basically amounted to torture. While it did change our priorities and perspectives, ultimately there was no gift for her, my daughters, or myself. Sounds great only if you live to tell the tale, but the same thing can happen on a harrowing hunting trip.

  • @bryankin Your country makes me sick, charging you money to preserve life, that is absolutely horrible, and I'm so sorry that something so awful happened to you and your family. Here in England all that health care is completely free, honestly that's really horrible and I really hope things look up in the future.

  • she doesn't seem to be anywhere close to being in a state of Nirvana and has the mega-corporations that have polluted this planet to thank for her so-called 'gift'.

  • Comment removed

  • The key to a happy and fulfilling life - brain tumours

Now I know what I want for christmas

  • Dumb cunt my grandfather died of cancer.

  • Nirvana? wtf ? ...

  • sadly i've had a lot of those kinds of gifts in life: everything going wrong and then you learn a lesson from it.. think i prefer CDs...

so glad she's better, great hero and inspiring story :)))

  • @MariluLane I've never understood why not dying from cancer or some other terrible illness makes you a hero. The only person that you may have even saved in that horrific situation would be yourself.

  • @geragna haha i like your wit ;) well i guess we try to compensate our fellow species for traumas that take so much from their lives by giving them excessive amounts of 'something' back... her suffering is common but she is still uniquely important as a human being. my comment was to regenerate awareness of how special she is and rejoice in her life!!!

    satisfied??!! ;) hehe lol

  • @MariluLane How do you find this inspiring!? She went through life with no understanding of it's importance until something bad happened to her, that's not inspiring that just shows what a narcissist she is. Now she's looking for everyone's sympathy and you're somehow viewing her as a hero?! the hero's are the geniuses who worked tirelessly in order to find treatments for such diseases.

  • @YourPalHDee you've been on the blab tonight aint ya mate, with all your two penneth you could save the economy!! haha :) well i did find it inspiring, i empathised with her as though she were one and the same as I - 'In Lakech' :I am another yourself. her fear touched me, i realised how vulnerable we all are.. life is beautiful health is priceless.. so are you playing badminton on the Wii tonight or arranging your affairs so as not to have a clash with ant and dec's saturday night take away?

    ;p

  • @MariluLane what? xD I fucking hate Ant and Dec.

  • @YourPalHDee bollocks you hate 'em. bet you watch them on HD 24 hours a day. you prob press your red button involuntarily when you see them because of the excitement.

    ;)

  • @MariluLane I genuinely confused as to how this conversation has sprouted up but seriously I do fucking hate them man, Ant and Dec and Lee Evans are like my 3 most hated people on the planet. Anyway, sorry but I don't find this woman inspiring loads of people survive cancer and they've come from far worse situations than her, they're not begging for a podium to tell their story.

  • she is so beautiful .. does it mean I judge by the looks ?

  • Oh hi guys, having a near death experience is the best thing ever!

  • I watched it and wow... all I can say is that Rolex Deepsea is a fine watch!

  • @Aslapacrosstheface but have you tried the submariner?

  • She meant being in the :spotlight: - some people like that, but sounds rather self-centred - well, I forgot, she wishes us the same, so she thinks of us all...what about helping sick people who dislike being sick, and being starving without any admirers e.g. in Pakistan, they need more spotlight and attention (see Oxfamamerica)

  • the :spotlight answer: referred to @Grudgy Diabolo wondering on admiration for cancer....

  • Thanks, but I'd rather take the rolex watch. it really looks pretty.

  • She makes dabbling into cancer sound pretty interesting...

  • you can get the same deal with a few hits of acid

  • @TheCakeAintNoLie now there's a man of taste

  • Happiness is about perspective eh?

  • I think I understood her meaning. I don't understand why is everyone swearing at this though. It may not be perfectly packaged but it carries a meaning that we should (and probably eventually will) understand.

  • Idiot. You want to give this gift away? Just inject the right things into a person and they will get tumors. I think she thinks that here god gave her this 'gift'. The error in her thinking is that she thinks there is a god and that the god is 'all loving'. So she warps her thinking until her brain is mush and calls it a gift.

  • what a load of crap....I've had cancer in my family and this kind of new age crap really pisses me off...just the opposite is true.

  • semi-cute chick, but stupid. people might think i'm referring to an effect of the tumor, but i'm not. the tumor in her removed under-used brain mass. but her genetics created that series of social relationships through her appearance. i think at some subconscious level she knows her real gift had nothing to do with the tumor... i wish people would stop thinking appearance makes someone worth listening to. also i can't believe TED posted/hosted this.

  • first I thought it might simply be a CHILD. I was cruely mistaken...
