yes yes, layar is a really nice program i just started using it today and i have to say. its quite handy. you can use it to find all sorts of cool things, and whats even cooler, is it also has a twitter feature built in (tweeps around(3d)) in which you can also see local twitter posts in the "Augmented reality", it tells you who/when posted it just like twitter, and does even one better and tell you where the post origintaed, and if you have a smart phone can even GPS you to the location..
I used layar today actually and it was QUITE nice. Has some bugs but im sure AR (Augmented Reality) will bet better as time goes by. But definitely download it if you havent already!
If you ask me, use of a compass is sort of cheating... But it'll have to do, until we have beter processing power, capable of actual real world object recognition.
I think all methods for achieving AR can be combined, to create more accurate results.
No I know, cause for this sort of application, that's necessary. Works fine for the job.
But in terms of other Augmented Reality applications, Image Recognition will be far more important than a compass. (but in the week since I posted that first comment, I can see how an electric compass would probably always be useful here.)

The compass is cheating? Is a necessity because GPS doesn't know which way you are facing.

@NikoKun That could be done incorporating RFID or equivalent future technologies with tags and chips.

Great application, can't wait to get it onto the iPhone 3GS. This interview reminds we why you never should chew gum during an interview on camera!
