  • thats y its called the pearl of africa

  • I would shoot myself if I went to Africa and heard an American accent.

  • Don't listen to Alan coop honestly Namibia is wonderful full of very nice and respectful people and I'm proud to say it's my home....in south Africa in cape town it's beautiful

  • love to visit namibia

  • i would love to visit namibia so if anybody can give me advise

  • Like Atlanta?? Erm... No.. There is less crime in Windhoek and the people more educated and friendly.

  • windhoek my beaituful city

    <3<3<3

    viva Namibia

  • Y does da gal say Windhoek is considered as d city, its nt considered bt it is d capital city even though it doesn't hv alt of high buildings like in d states or other developd countries.Life in Namibia is nor different frm d one in USA,Atlanta so dn't try n make it as if we r suffering alt.

  • Gee it is nice talking to you. Apparently only 3 % of Americans (I mean USA citizens) travel overseas on their holidays. I have a theory it is because Americans only get 2 weeks holiday per year (Australia it is 5 weeks). It is so sad as I believe they need the education. They are so insular. America has come a long way - a black man as President!! But they still have a long way to go.

  • I have unbelievable respect for Martin Luther King - I have his "I Have a Dream" speech on my hard drive. Inter tribal warfare is a real problem and I don't know what can be done about it. My observation is that it is worse in non christian countries. Racism is far worse in Africa (the parts that I know) than Australia. Not that it is needed (generally) but we have laws stopping people from making racist comments.

  • when i moved here, it's not about the amount of holiday time they get, it's just a complete lack of interest about other countries. all the knowledge they get about other countries, is via the media. and the media tends to twist everything.

racism might be bad in africa, but maybe not as bad as the parts of africa where i've been.

infact, ALOT! of people think africa is a country. or that they speak french in a country called europe. the ignorance here is BAD!

  • When I was in Fiji I met Americans (USA citizens) who had flown in from the States to Nandi Airport. They transferred to an air--conditioned coach which took them direct to a resort type hotel on the south coast such as the Singatoka Resort. They no doubt ate American type food, sipped martinis and swam in the swimming pool. At the end of the week they boarded the coach for the return trip to the USA. Why did they bother? (In those days (1973) their may have been a racist element)

  • maybe there was.

  • Americans travel all over the world, WAY more than 3% leave the country. Your stats are faulty. I don't know anyone who has NOT been out of the country. However, there is so much to see here at home, you could spend your life visiting places within the US and never get to half of those worth seeing.

2 weeks vacation is standard for new employees, but that helps explain why the average American is so much more productive than you lazy Aussies and Euros. We work hard and party hard.

  • Was the "3%" stated as "only 3% of Americans have travelled overseas" or "only 3% of Americans travel overseas each year"? I don't recall. If most people only get 2 wks/year holiday I really don't know how they can travel. Many people were shocked to hear that Sarah Pallin thought there was a country called "Africa". In Australia most tourists are from Asia. I am not sure tthat many North Americans come to Australia as tourists.

  • @GumbytheUnstoppabIe More productivity? Your stats are definitely faulty. The average American works more AND is less productive.

  • This comment is attached to the original one I was responding to. It does not say 3% per year, it just says 3%.

Even so, it is much easier for Brits to travel overseas since it is a small island with plenty of other places close by. If it really is 3% of Americans per year, that is a lot of people with the only places remotely close by being little islands in the Carribean. I bet the same or lower % can be put on all the mainland countries of the Americas.

  • Windhoek is even more beautiful than many European cities. The media likes to portray the extreme poverty areas, but they are afraid to show how Africa is developing. Watch this space, Africa is coming up!

  • I suggested the only way to travel Africa was on organised tours. Apparently that isn't safe. My friend said there was an armoured car in front (and behind) their Coach!!! I've seen enough to know I don't want to go back.

  • 6feetsdown. Quite obviously you have never been to Namibia as you wouldn't be saying what you said. I have been there and I have been to South Africa (flew over it at 30,000 feet)

  • wHO WOULD WANT TO GO TO AFRICA? not me...... ignorant black people...

  • I am not racist - I don't hate black people it's just that I can't stand rudeness

  • ok you are smart because you can make bombs to drop on children than come back in you rcountry as heros! that's why you are smart haha

  • How many wars are there in Africa? You people like going around killing each other with machetes (look at what is happening in Rwanda). Why is it that there are 2.7 million refugees in Africa?

  • you no know nothing about histoire i can see. Where did the war started? ww1 ww2, 5millions juifs killed iroshima nagasaki... so only africans fight? even a white who thinks like you call himself smart. smart my ass

  • Why are you so rude? Do you hate us?

You made the statement that we think are smart because "we make bombs to drop on children". Do you deny what is happening in Rwanda? "In just three months, an estimated 800000 people were massacred in the Rwandan genocide". "More than 450000 people have die in Darfur". "Since 1998, more than 3.5 million people have died in the Democratic Republic of the Congo".

  • who hates who? who throw bananas to other humans? who vetoed the withdrawal the of the un troops in 1994 in rwanda? who gave millions of dollars to rwanda and uganda to invade congo? ask cliton. You claim to have power because you can watch millions of women and children being killed innocently because it is not in europe? and you say you are the leader of the world! who killed lumumba for national interest? u r miss-using the power God gave to u! he will take it back

  • There are bad people in all races but the vast majority of people around the world are shocked at what is going on in Rwanda. Why didn't African nations do something about Idi Amin? Why don't they do something about Mugabe? I can't argue with you about African history because I haven't studied it - maybe I should.

  • you should study it than will find out that mugabe did nothing wrong at all

  • He got rid of the white farmers and gave the farms to his friends. His friends don't know how to farm so Zimbabweans are now starving - they are fleeing to SA. If you don't understand that it worries me.

  • mugabe wants to make zimbabwe free from european/western reliance on almost everything. which is good.

    BUT!

his methods of chasing white farmers and giving them to people who know nothing about farming, are BAD!

he's doing more harm than good, even though he think's what he's doing is good. he should be removed from power/office. ASAP!

  • what's your problem with africa?

  • With comments like that it seems that black people aren't the only race with some ignorant people.

  • do you speak australian in windhoek or do you speak crap languages like afrikaans?

  • They speak Australian in South of Africa (the alternative is American/English) Although Africaans is spoken to a limited extent in the South.

  • You need to take this tape off. This is so wrong. Very wrong. How could you? We have enough ignorant people come and give bad rep. You black I would think you want to come to Africa to show the rest of the world especially black people that were they are from its not bad at all. Also, the aids rate in Atlanta and Baltimore is bad. Yeah ratio to ratio it seems like Namibia is worse because of the small population but otherwise they is not difference . You really hurt alot people. Its sad.

  • You are joking surely?

  • Can you explain in plain English what you are n about? You are so garbled

  • Typical American ignorance, Namibia we speak English its in Southern Africa, how do u compare the US to Canada

  • Blaqpearla. Of course all signage is in ENGLISH and the spoken language ENGLISH!

  • I can thoroughly recommend a trip to Namibia. It is very Westernised (that's probably bad!), the country is pretty dry abut the animals are delightful especially in the huge Etosha Pan reserve. All signage is in Australian and Australian is generally the spoken language.

  • SIgnage in Australian? Are u joking? I hope so but as not to mislead the ignorant, we speak English and all signs are in English and Afrikaans or German.

  • ARE u fucking retarded? We dont speak Australian in Nam.official language is english, but as u move toward the south, people use more afrikaans than english,u will hardly find some one speaking eglish in the street.why cant ignorant white people live africa alone?Nam is a beautiful developing country, you dig?

  • I am surprised at the crudeness of your reply. It isn't any wonder that people from all around the world don't find Africa a particularly desirable continent to travel - they know they are not welcome. I loved the wildlife but Africa hasn't got much else going for it - I won't be back.

  • if you think africa doesn't have much going for it, then clearly you haven't seen much of it. there's more to africa than just wild life.

  • I've been through the Pacific, a lot of Europe and a lot of Asia. I can tell you the parts I saw of Africa do not compare. It is not nice being screamed at by airport staff, have an uncocked AK47 pointed at your chest or being told "you cannot go there it is too unsafe"

  • 1- each continent has it's own type of beauty. it's like comparing bananas and apples.

2- i don't know which part of africa you've been to where airport staff yells at you with AK's, but you're the 1st person i've heard saying that.

3- i was born and raised there, so trust me, i know!

4- don't say "africa", be specific as to which country you're refering to. they're over 50 countries and they're all VERY, VERY! different!

  • Firstly thank you for the politeness of your reply. I don't think people realise the harm they do to the image of African countries when they swear , make obscene remarks and show their racist traits. People thinking of holidaying in Africa would only have to look at some of the blogs here and quickly change their minds. Black people have every right to hate white people for what they have done but there is no point in trying to take revenge.

  • REPLY 2 You only have to look at what Mugabe has done to Zimbabwe. (I believe SA is going down the same track to destruction) Compare Namibia and Botswana - they treat white people with respect and fairness.I agree with point (1) Point (2) Maybe people are polite to you and don't tell you incredibly rude people are in SA. Everyone I know who has been to the continent of Africa makes the same observation. Point (4) Of course you are correct and I have only been to SA, Namibia.

  • REPLY 3 But I wouldn't want to go where there is fighting and that seems to be everywhere. Often black SA people would tell me not to go to different places because it was too unsafe. Another thing that I found was distressing was to see black people rummaging through rubbish bins for food. I once gave an old chap (who was rummaging) two oranges that I happened to have. He looked at me (as if to say thanks) and tears rolled down his old face.

  • because the president is supported by the majority, that same part will keep winning the election. but now there's division within that tribe, so maybe change in on it's way.

namibia, is a beautiful country, but just like any other country, it has problems. to be honest with you, any country in africa without whites, is terribly poor. FACT!

what mugabe wants to do is right, but his methods of chasing people, and killing people are WRONG!

but i still love africa/namibia it's my home!

  • where are these blogs, i'd love to see them.

i don't think blacks have the right to hate any white person. they hated us in the past, and hating them now solves nothing. hatered + hatred = more hatred, and hunger for revenge. it doesn't make the problem go away.

i agree with mastki2000 when he says the western media doesn't show the developed side of africa, and it's wrong!

i will disagree with you when you say namibians treat whites with respect.only SOME blacks do. i'll explain.....>

  • You are absolutely correct - hatred + hatred = more hatred. Why can't blacks and whites treat each other with respect? It is good to see Namibia having a few wins - Oil/gas off the coast, and they have large reserves of uranium. They are finding a lot of oil/gas off the coast of Africa. The latest (huge) find is off the coast of Sierra Leone. If you still yearn for Namibia you might like to look at my photos on Webshots. You can see them if you do a search on "coopec100"

  • "Why can't blacks and whites treat each other with respect?"

there are still some whites who think they are superior, and some blacks who're still bitter.

YES! namibia DOES have alot of natural resources, so does the rest of africa. but those natural resources are being shipped to european countries, and the money from that is being pocketed by corrupt politicians. look at nigeria, GOOD EXAMPLE!

i'd still love to see these blogs no matter how bad there are.

  • I consider you one of my friends and therefore do not wish you to see the blogs - they are extremely unpleasant. I haven't lead a sheltered life and have seen plenty of crudeness by people, but the things black/white people say to each other would make your hair curl. Natural resources are being shipped to other countries but the alternative is to leave it in the ground. East Timor has huge deposits of natural gas. They asked oil companies too much for the gas so it stays in the ground .

  • What developing countries must do is to insist that local people are employed/trained in the mines and on the oil rigs so that in say 10 years time foreign firms are not necessary. What part of Namibia are you from? I was very impressed with Windhoek - so neat and pleasant. You sound quite well educated - what are you doing in the States? You mentioned about corruption - I worked on Nauru Island. They made a huge amount out of phosphate - it's all gone and so has the money. CORRUPTION!

  • I was waiting for a plane to return to Australia so spent a pleasant 3 days in Windhoek. I stayed at Hotel Celia and each day would take a 10 minute stroll into the city and then I would walk everywhere! I loved the shops and the food - it is so similar to Australia it doesn't matter.

  • it's good to hear it's similar to Austrailia, are you Austrailian? which part?

i miss Namibia, and Windhoek("061") so much, not a day goes by that i don't think about it. the food and ofcourse my family and friends. i will go back one day, but not to stay, just to visit.

coutries like South Africa, Namibia, Australia and others are similar in many ways. our similarities are linked by the fact that we're colonised by the british. similar school/education systems, manner of speech.etc.

  • I was based in Tsumeb I visited Etosha Reserve, Grootfontein, and Omuthiya. I wanted to go to Rundu for a week-end but ran out of time in the end. I was born in Victoria (Australia) and raised in "Cockatoo". If you do a google (image) search on "Cockatoo Victoria" you will see a lot of photos. The State Library photos were taken (say) 20 years before I was born. The "Puffing Billy" (steam train) used to pass about 1 kilometer from my house. The area is very "hilly" and very picturesque

  • I am sure some-one will correct me if I am wrong but I think a lot of the problems Africa has is the number of different tribes which don't seem to be friendly to each other. I read one article which said the Colonial forefathers drew each country's borders up on geographical features (rivers, ocean, lakes etc) but did not take into account tribal factors and that is causing a lot of conflict now. Did you see my Webshots photos ? (coopec100)

  • <.....nice to talk to someone who's travelled alot, you've travelled alot more than me. i'd also love to see other countries. growing up we'd always move around from Namibia, to Zambia, to Zimbabwe, and Bostwana. strangely enough i've never been to SA.lol! always heading north and east.

dont mean to be mean, but ALOT! of Americans don't really know what exists beyond their borders. and it's hard to explain to them that africa is not the diseased filled, poor continent they see on TV.

  • Sarah Palin (?) the running mate in the last US election thought their was such a country as Africa!! LOLr

  • you've been to some places i've never been to. like Tsumeb, i've been to Etosha twice, and Grootfontein and Rundu(stayed there for a day sometimes) quite a few times, but just passing through on our way to Katima Mulilo in the Caprivi strip.

you were born in Victoria Austrailia, i was born in Livingstone Zambia near Victoria falls. so i guess we have Victoria in common. lol!

you're 100% correct! to be honest with you, democracy doesn't work very well in africa. because parties....>

  • from PM.

<.....people get jobs a privilages, you'll come to notice this when you stay well over a year in Namibia.

the story of me moving to the states is a long one, at least 7 years in the making. lol!!

i wouldn't say i'm "well educated" i just speak from experience and what i've observed.

well that's what happens in developing countries. the money is there and suddenly it vanishes! and you dare not ask why? or where it has anished to? just accept that it's gone. lol!!

  • if these blogs don't exist, then just tell me.lol

the alternative is to use the natural resources and spend the money to modernise africa, not pocket the cash, and make the europeans/westerners more wealthy.

the problem with africa is politics. we don't have alot of natural disasters, our problem is corruption and greedy leaders.

aslong as corruption plages governments, developing countries will remain just that, developing countries.

i'm from the Caprivi region of Namibia......>

  • I won't tell you where these disgusting blogs are because they are just so revolting they would make you feel sick.

  • i'm a black namibian, and i live in the states because of black on black hatred/dislike. namibia's people are divided into different tribes, the political party in power is suppoerted by a tribe that makes up over 50% of the entire population. so obviously the president and high politicians will alwasy be from the same tribe, and they will continue to oppress the minority tribes. it's not black on white, it's one group of black against everyone else. it was very evident in high school.

  • I see you have also visited South Africa. I was wondering, how would you compare Namibia with the rest of the neighbouring countries there (South Africa, Zimbabwe). I have read about some similar problems going on in those two respective countries, but we never really hear about Namibia (much less, many Americans don't even know where this is). Anyway, I am just curious.

  • South Africans are incredibly racist and the airport employees are rude (probably racism based). Be careful where you go by day and by night. The gate-keeper at the Safari Court Hotel refused to allow me to walk around the hotel at night (though the hotel is very well protected by high fences and razor wire.) I found Namibia to be much safer and much less less racism (although there was the barbed wire, AK47s and Rottweiller dogs in every backyard). If you travel Africa go on organised tours.

  • Did you see my clips of Windhoek?

  • I'm trying to work out where the hotel is. I've posted quite a few clips myself. I wonder if the hotel can be seen in the panoramic view of Windhoek (maybe in the background)?

  • It is probably the kalahari sands hotel, right in the middle of the city center!

  • it's pronounced "vind-hook"

  • lol nice ... hope you liked it
