This is not a sad song when applied right, it is a happy song, a song a joy at one's freedom from the nothingness and pain of friendship and love. Not that this is a good thing.
One of the saddest songs ever made. Simon talks about how great it would be to be like a rock with no feelings, but his sad tone of voice at that last verse underlines the fact that this is not true, no matter how many times we say it, we're all human, we have feelings and we need of our loved ones to help us in this life. I love this song, but I just can't help but shed a tear at the end of that last verse.
One of the most insightful poems I have ever read, and I read a lot of poetry. The words are made even more powerful by the beautiful melody and I'm sure they apply to a lot of people.
My mom told me once that my great aunt (I think...) used to walk around the house singing this and that she (my mom) never thought it was a bit weird until she was older lol
Thanks for posting this. It was very meaningful to me when I was growing up. I was 13 when this was played don the radio. I heard it today on the radio and it brought so much back. This song is about all of us - at least at one time or another in our lives.
THIS SONG HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITES! I NEVER TIRE OF IT AND THE WORDS ARE AS POWERFUL TODAY AS THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THEM! THUS, IT IS TRULY A CLASSIC!!
I have no need for friendship, friendship causes pain. I for one agree with that why have friends when some will make you mad and causes you pain when they are not your friend anymore
Growing up in a harsh environment, I have built walls for myself to avoid from feeling sad, but after many years I realize I was never meant to be that strong; I was merely pretending to be unaffected when deep down inside I am fragile as a glass. I learned to face my fears and this song is completely relatable.
I usually don't read lyrics for a youtube video. but i just had to for this song. it's so relative to what i'm going through at this point in my life.
i swear they were talking to me when they wrote this song because thanks to someone i love im now just empty worst part is its her happiness that is killing me any advice anyone
@Tertiarygrowth Never said it was good. Like I said, an eye for an eye. You dislike the idea, that's your thing. I personally love the concept of it, just keep in mind I had never said it waqs good advice. Have a lovely day, and bless you if you sneezed reading this.
Yep, You can't smoke a Rock! Rocks and Islands are good. Learn to build bridges tho... A good bridge can take you places youll never see on an island. Think about it. Life is about growing and changes... Solitude is good, but youll probably never build pyramids alone. You will be remembered for what you leave behind... Words, wisdom, things, ideas...
For those Waiting For The End by Linken Park and Back To December by Taylor Swift. I'm with you on this one. Can't take it back but you can get yourself a little stronger with these holidays coming up. This song helps. I think.
@180Patrick360...Quite! I made a wee remark, like 'THIS Fortress can't be penetrated'...Got letters from folk; don't know why is 'thumbed-up'...I was just feeling rather nihilistic; I believe on a live performance of this he says it is his most 'neurotic song' ever...Whatever, the lyrics are ineffable. X.
This is a song for those who have been heart broken. It sucks. Simon and Garfunkel expressed this with a tumultuous mixture of depressing music and upbeat tune. When you get your heart broken only irony can express that feeling the best.
To you commentors who seem to be taking the song literally-- How do you not get the irony in this song. The very first goddamn line is "I am alone". The speaker is not someone we are supposed to agree with. The speaker's attitude is supposed to be sad. "Hiding in my room, safe within my womb" "I touch no one and NO ONE TOUCHES ME". The speaker is a sad person who has been hurt in the past and uses this to justify hiding from all contact. This is not a "hymn" to "autistic people".
Tbh, everyone saying that today's music sucks is wrong, today you can find music like this, and you can find music like Lady Gaga and Beyonce and Rihanna, a certain type of music doesn't suck, some people like different genres and beats, I love song by Lady Gaga and songs by Simon & Garfunkel and Florence + The Machine. People need to stop bashing today's music and yesterday's music, and just accept that people have different tastes.

Is it normal? I'm 16 and I prefer listening to Simon and Garfunkel thant listening to Jennifer Lopez and all those " stars ". Those gus, sing with their real voice and real instruments, I don't think that lots of actual stars do that...
@USAAFdesplanque dude im 23 now and started listening to paul and art when i was about 15, 16. I had people always around me listening to that pop shit. I was laughed at and ridiculed for my taste and others like Cat Stevens, Hendrix, ZEPPELIN!! i couldn't believeit, but to answer you it's perfectly normal. This music is profound, thought invoking, soulfull, and many other things lacking in modern culture. You're the steward of this art, and thats no pun intended and its your job to pass this on
My boyfriend said I had to listen to this, because this song describes him and I had to understand that one day I would experience him being a 'rock'.
I was really moved by the song and I answered him: You are an island and my ship has run aground :). I don't care if he is a bit a 'loner'. he is way too special :)
This song will always make me think about him, no matter what happens.
I think the sixties had some of the greatest songs (my favorite years were from 1965 to 1970, then I advanced to acid rock), and to make my point on the sixties songs, all you have to go is listen to these same songs playing on TV and radio commercials today in 2011... This song is 45 years old now and I think it's great that this generation (3rd generation) likes the songs...
To all the teenagers who enjoyed this and other songs by Simon and Garfunkel, you have great taste in music. To all of the people attacking the teenagers, you clearly didn't understand the message of the music. Attacking people who discover their music and are moved by it is the opposite of what they were trying to express. And now someone will prove my point by attacking me.
@buhdlight Your good intentions are notable; but as a youngster myself, and as a fan of S&G for nearly a decade, I'm sick of other kids posting their age on these threads. Am I so unique because I listen to the oldies? Apparently not. Shocker. Now that all these children have done us the favor of stating their age on here, I think we all got the point: everybody and their dogs likes Simon & Garfunkel. Can we move on now?
@flangered Good job grammar police! You are going out of your way to insult someone for no reason in the comment section of a Simon and Garfunkel song. I guess what I should have said it's funny and sad that you are doing that while not having a clue what the music was about in the 1st place.
@buhdlight thank you for saying this! Im a teenager and it really bugs me that people insult us on these videos because it is essentially discouraging us from listening to older music in the future. Someone finally gets it! :)
You're welcome! I would guess most of us on youtube did not hear Simon and Garfunkel when they first were on the radio, but rather heard it because our parents or others from that generation introduced us to the music. We weren't the first to recognize it's beauty, but we weren't belittled by the older generation for feeling like we found something new. They wanted to share it with us and were happy to sit back and watch how we felt alive and understood by the music and words.

@buhdlight what point, you didn't have a point, what you said made no sense.

@flangered It's funny and sad that you don't see the irony of your post.

@flangered Good job grammar police! You are going out of your way to insult someone for no reason in the comment section of a Simon and Garfunkel song. I guess what I should have said it's funny and sad that you are doing that while not having a clue what the music was about in the 1st place.

@buhdlight I think you should stop posting, you're embarrassing yourself.

@buhdlight thank you for saying this! Im a teenager and it really bugs me that people insult us on these videos because it is essentially discouraging us from listening to older music in the future. Someone finally gets it! :)

@HelloIAmGreen
