  • I don't wanna be a rock...

  • i love this song <3

  • This was my Valentine's Day song. -___-

  • This is not a sad song when applied right, it is a happy song, a song a joy at one's freedom from the nothingness and pain of friendship and love. Not that this is a good thing.

  • @shwoozar STFU! I'm having feels...

  • After my ex broke my heart, I AM A ROCK, I AM AN ISLAND.

  • thnx for uploading.... now i can singalong.... hehehe ;)

  • Hahahaha I heard this song at school. It's a good song.. But sad...

  • Ah, this song. The introvert's anthem...

  • One of the saddest songs ever made. Simon talks about how great it would be to be like a rock with no feelings, but his sad tone of voice at that last verse underlines the fact that this is not true, no matter how many times we say it, we're all human, we have feelings and we need of our loved ones to help us in this life. I love this song, but I just can't help but shed a tear at the end of that last verse.

  • And a rock feels no pain, and an island never cries... *sniff* :*-(

  • I AM A ROCK

  • 'This song seemed to be written on my behalf....

  • The ultimate "I'm alone, that's how it is, and I'm fine with that." song.

  • My brother wont stop singing this, I dont mind it al :)

  • my teacher showed this to me as an example of poetry and i loved it

  • @juicymccarry12 What school do you go to... let me geuss... bayviewglen.

  • AHAHA I LAUGHED THE WHOLE TIME XD My stoumach hurts xD

  • Left the statesand lived on an island for 9months ,best time of my youth.

This songs takes me back there.

  • This song is definitely BBC's Sherlock all the way. Just saying. :D

  • ...and rocks are always kicked around

  • islands are deserted.

  • I suppose I'll join the many people talking about how this song could be about them. Especially the books part. :/

  • The anthem of an heroes everywhere.

  • @texantyrant They anthem on YOUR MOM everywhere.

  • I wish the last line were true . . .

  • @lien0569 i wish your mom were true

  • @lien0569 Islands cry when nobody is around. Sad but true.

  • thumps up if ur from vee xD

  • One of the most insightful poems I have ever read, and I read a lot of poetry. The words are made even more powerful by the beautiful melody and I'm sure they apply to a lot of people.

  • Could this be the very first "emo" song? Well, if it is, I know I loved it as a kid.... and thought it was all about me...

Hmmm... isn't that the "emo" anthem, "all about me..." Hmmmm...

Anyways, great job, great song! Thanks to Simon and Garfunkel and the poster!

  • My mom told me once that my great aunt (I think...) used to walk around the house singing this and that she (my mom) never thought it was a bit weird until she was older lol

  • I have no need for friendship, friendship causes pain. Sad.

  • Just realized that this song could have been written about me...Damn.

  • @Mtc529 just realized this song could have been written about YOUR MOM

  • Wow. A friend just said this song reminded them of me. I feel both good and bad about that...

  • Thanks for posting this. It was very meaningful to me when I was growing up. I was 13 when this was played don the radio. I heard it today on the radio and it brought so much back. This song is about all of us - at least at one time or another in our lives.

  • THIS SONG HAS ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITES! I NEVER TIRE OF IT AND THE WORDS ARE AS POWERFUL TODAY AS THE FIRST TIME I HEARD THEM! THUS, IT IS TRULY A CLASSIC!!

  • Eh, I love this song, but reading some of these comments? Not so much.

  • I cry as soon as this song starts.

  • @MsBlackparadeisdead too bad you're not an island :/

  • I have no need for friendship, friendship causes pain. I for one agree with that why have friends when some will make you mad and causes you pain when they are not your friend anymore

  • Growing up in a harsh environment, I have built walls for myself to avoid from feeling sad, but after many years I realize I was never meant to be that strong; I was merely pretending to be unaffected when deep down inside I am fragile as a glass. I learned to face my fears and this song is completely relatable.

  • @ExpressivePugilist Ever listened to the Pink Floyd album The Wall? It sounds like you could relate to that, too

  • Sort of like a theme song? xD okay i'm done. lol.

  • I usually don't read lyrics for a youtube video. but i just had to for this song. it's so relative to what i'm going through at this point in my life.

  • @BassMakesPaste Damn it I was trying not to cry and that made me go over the edge.

  • I thought, that this is happy song :D

  • You come into this world alone. You leave this world alone.

  • i swear they were talking to me when they wrote this song because thanks to someone i love im now just empty worst part is its her happiness that is killing me any advice anyone

  • @xxjondonleyxx1 don't blame yourself for the things other people do.

  • @xxjondonleyxx1 My advice would be to make her suffer the way she did to you. A modifed eye for an eye if you will.

  • @SpetsnazDeltaTV worst advice ever

  • @Tertiarygrowth Never said it was good. Like I said, an eye for an eye. You dislike the idea, that's your thing. I personally love the concept of it, just keep in mind I had never said it waqs good advice. Have a lovely day, and bless you if you sneezed reading this.

  • Yep, You can't smoke a Rock! Rocks and Islands are good. Learn to build bridges tho... A good bridge can take you places youll never see on an island. Think about it. Life is about growing and changes... Solitude is good, but youll probably never build pyramids alone. You will be remembered for what you leave behind... Words, wisdom, things, ideas...

  • @BaddBrad61 I like your idea about bridges!! :) I almost started to think this song was about me... but building bridges is much better!

  • another one of the greatest songs of all time

  • So fitting for how I'm feeling right now..

  • This should be the official song for people with Schizoid Personality. So fitting.

  • how can people dislike this song .

  • Poem by John Donne

  • Love this song (and the band :D). thanks for uploading. Cool font! What's it called? :D

  • @ericdburton91 its called your mom

  • this makes me want to go around flipping off every modern musician

  • @uberCharlie7552 Lol.:D

I love this song.My grandma is the one who got me into this band in the first place,so I have her to thank.:D

  • Top things in my life now:

    Simon & Garfunkel's I Am a Rock

    Counting Crows' A Long December

Keeping my yearly tradition of watching It's A Wonderful Life alone on Christmas Eve

"I am a rock. I am an island."

  • best beginning of a song ever

  • When I first heard this song many years ago, it didn't make much sense to me. Then I heard the last two lines, and it all came together. So deep

  • Once again I am amazed at the ability of youtube comments to make a fight out of absolutely anything. Great song though. Glad I could find it here.

  • 2 years ago this was me ...

    now i'm better

  • I am a rock, I am an island. Now it's up to you to deal with it; a rock feels no pain and an island never dies. :P

  • For those Waiting For The End by Linken Park and Back To December by Taylor Swift. I'm with you on this one. Can't take it back but you can get yourself a little stronger with these holidays coming up. This song helps. I think.

  • @180Patrick360...Quite! I made a wee remark, like 'THIS Fortress can't be penetrated'...Got letters from folk; don't know why is 'thumbed-up'...I was just feeling rather nihilistic; I believe on a live performance of this he says it is his most 'neurotic song' ever...Whatever, the lyrics are ineffable. X.

  • no one will make me under siege my walls are made of darkness

  • @pistamolo only the ones that love you will

  • I cried when I heard this just now.

    This song is about me.

  • @BassMakesPaste I tried that once upon a time. It didn't work very well.

  • @BassMakesPaste This song is about alot of people, ironic isn't it?

  • @LoveECPR It's like an ocean of small private islands... ;o)

  • @BassMakesPaste but an island never cries

  • @BassMakesPaste I know what you mean...I can relate to just about every word of this song...Is that good or bad ? ;)

  • @BassMakesPaste hope you are better now........(-=

  • @BassMakesPaste an island never cries.

  • @BassMakesPaste Welcome to the club!

  • @BassMakesPaste was the same for me 40 years ago...

  • Haha i have two playlists on youtube.

    1. Lil Wayne 50 Cent , Tech n9ne, etc all hard core rap bout getting some

    2. Simon and Garfunkel lmao :D

  • Comment removed

  • This is a song for those who have been heart broken. It sucks. Simon and Garfunkel expressed this with a tumultuous mixture of depressing music and upbeat tune. When you get your heart broken only irony can express that feeling the best.

  • @00FF00Alligator my willy hurts

  • Reminds me of my father

  • To you commentors who seem to be taking the song literally-- How do you not get the irony in this song. The very first goddamn line is "I am alone". The speaker is not someone we are supposed to agree with. The speaker's attitude is supposed to be sad. "Hiding in my room, safe within my womb" "I touch no one and NO ONE TOUCHES ME". The speaker is a sad person who has been hurt in the past and uses this to justify hiding from all contact. This is not a "hymn" to "autistic people".

  • Haha is it weird that im a 13 year old girl listening to this...Actually enjoying this;)

  • @Littlemisspro not at all lol im 15 and i love this music!

  • @Littlemisspro Heck no! This is one of those artists that should be immortalized as founding fathers of their music. Share it with yer friends!

  • @moshadoe my willy bleeds

  • My teacher played this for us during language class!

  • Tbh, everyone saying that today's music sucks is wrong, today you can find music like this, and you can find music like Lady Gaga and Beyonce and Rihanna, a certain type of music doesn't suck, some people like different genres and beats, I love song by Lady Gaga and songs by Simon & Garfunkel and Florence + The Machine. People need to stop bashing today's music and yesterday's music, and just accept that people have different tastes.

  • i am 15 n i love music by beatles, simon and garfunkel elvis presly ,little richards, queen, eagles ,george michaels, cliff richards because the truth is todays music SUCKS

  • Thank you for posting. Aloha from the island of Oahu.

  • I suffer from Asperger's syndrome and love this song :) it's like an hymn to us autistic people.

  • This song always reminded me of my mother. She had issues with people.

  • this song has described me so well its scares me... one day i hope this doesnt describe me at all though

  • god I am so tired of that term "emo" what the hell is an emo? It really makes no sense.....for the love of self please stop

  • @oneiric831 "entirely my opinion"

  • The premise of this song is the only thing that keeps me alive.

  • Wow... these lyrics are... they were totally the original emo band!

  • @rectech911 Except they do it right, instead of being depressing grunge shit.

  • 21 dislikes? Who are you? Identify yourselves!

  • Update: This fortress CAN be PennyTraited by Brhídeog, the Caer Cat, who lives here, Dad/Mam, and the Spirits of my ancestors from Alban Eskdale and Liddesdale, Flintshire N.Cymru, and Eire.

Also, L.GhostWatching, always welcome, as is the caim Taliesen of Mon /|\, jimsim1, and my Canadian cousin, sunchilde68. )O(

  • @PennyTraition **YOU** are always welcome in my fortress my dear! I also am carved of similar substance my sweet! I chiseled out from moon rock a petrified teenager many dead moons ago..but this Island will cry in a deep and dark December without your warmth and poetry to protect me...So please visit me amongst my books inside my shielding womb... xox:(+):xox

  • @PennyTraition - whut ... ?

  • There's no Penny Traiting THIS Fortress...

    )O(

  • @PennyTraition if I never loved , I never would have cried...

  • @sunchilde68 It is better to have loved and lost than to not have loved at all

  • @sunchilde68 that quote stuck out to me too over anything else in the song

  • the definite medicine to cure loneliness......!

  • Islands never laugh, smile, or cheer either. So, you know... there is that :)

  • If I never loved, I never would have been happy, either... :)

  • i have the word before.......

  • Paul simon is just as good a singer on his own as he is with garfunkel but i wonder why they split up.

  • Story of my life

  • Do dupy to jest lepszy HUST Fridet up

  • we had to listen to this song in english and make connections between it and "of mice and men." ever since i've been in love with this song!!

  • @fame122095 did you find any?

  • Is it normal? I'm 16 and I prefer listening to Simon and Garfunkel thant listening to Jennifer Lopez and all those " stars ". Those gus, sing with their real voice and real instruments, I don't think that lots of actual stars do that...

  • @USAAFdesplanque Yes, it is:-D

  • @USAAFdesplanque dude im 23 now and started listening to paul and art when i was about 15, 16. I had people always around me listening to that pop shit. I was laughed at and ridiculed for my taste and others like Cat Stevens, Hendrix, ZEPPELIN!! i couldn't believeit, but to answer you it's perfectly normal. This music is profound, thought invoking, soulfull, and many other things lacking in modern culture. You're the steward of this art, and thats no pun intended and its your job to pass this on

  • @USAAFdesplanque Quite normal, music does not limit age.

  • @SEAWEEDRAVEN agreed :]

  • @SEAWEEDRAVEN I think the singer doesn't want to admit to himself that he is lonely and pining for company.

  • @SEAWEEDRAVEN no loner is powerful

  • Forever Alone's anthem.

  • @NerdyDaffy you're not funny

  • this song's about me

  • @greymuhlnickel: memorial, dood. Mamorial would have something to do with milk glands.

  • islands never cry...

  • perfect for the 9/11 mamorial

  • It could stand alone as a beautiful poem.

  • Thanx. My favourite.

  • My boyfriend said I had to listen to this, because this song describes him and I had to understand that one day I would experience him being a 'rock'.

I was really moved by the song and I answered him: You are an island and my ship has run aground :). I don't care if he is a bit a 'loner'. he is way too special :)

This song will always make me think about him, no matter what happens.

  • My dad always played S&G and CCR when we were kids. What good memories, listening to this again!

  • I am unoriginal and I love this song!

  • @SEAWEEDRAVEN The anthem of the suicidal recluse!

  • I've heard the word before. No one means it, it is only a cover for greed and hate. I am a rock because of it.

  • Good song about my favorite poet. Beautiful.

  • Does ne1 know what this song is about and why it was written? I was told but can't remember.

  • @bevking86 Really? You don't know what it's about? It's self explanatory.

  • @bevking86 It's about Emily Dickinson.

  • @dementis93 All the awards, dear sir. All the fucking awards.

  • I'm a walrus

  • im a rock that listens to good music thumbs up if you are an awesome rock that listens to good music to wait or should i say epic music

  • I think the sixties had some of the greatest songs (my favorite years were from 1965 to 1970, then I advanced to acid rock), and to make my point on the sixties songs, all you have to go is listen to these same songs playing on TV and radio commercials today in 2011... This song is 45 years old now and I think it's great that this generation (3rd generation) likes the songs...

  • This has been my fave S&G song since I was 6! :D

  • To all the teenagers who enjoyed this and other songs by Simon and Garfunkel, you have great taste in music. To all of the people attacking the teenagers, you clearly didn't understand the message of the music. Attacking people who discover their music and are moved by it is the opposite of what they were trying to express. And now someone will prove my point by attacking me.

  • @buhdlight Your good intentions are notable; but as a youngster myself, and as a fan of S&G for nearly a decade, I'm sick of other kids posting their age on these threads. Am I so unique because I listen to the oldies? Apparently not. Shocker. Now that all these children have done us the favor of stating their age on here, I think we all got the point: everybody and their dogs likes Simon & Garfunkel. Can we move on now?

  • @buhdlight what point, you didn't have a point, what you said made no sense.

  • @flangered It's funny and sad that you don't see the irony of your post.

  • @buhdlight It's funny and sad that you don't know what irony means.

  • @flangered Good job grammar police! You are going out of your way to insult someone for no reason in the comment section of a Simon and Garfunkel song. I guess what I should have said it's funny and sad that you are doing that while not having a clue what the music was about in the 1st place.

  • @buhdlight I think you should stop posting, you're embarrassing yourself.

  • @flangered my willy stings

  • @buhdlight my willy tickles

  • @hamishavfc You alleged willie can go straight to hell.

  • @buhdlight thank you for saying this! Im a teenager and it really bugs me that people insult us on these videos because it is essentially discouraging us from listening to older music in the future. Someone finally gets it! :)

  • @HelloIAmGreen

You're welcome! I would guess most of us on youtube did not hear Simon and Garfunkel when they first were on the radio, but rather heard it because our parents or others from that generation introduced us to the music. We weren't the first to recognize it's beauty, but we weren't belittled by the older generation for feeling like we found something new. They wanted to share it with us and were happy to sit back and watch how we felt alive and understood by the music and words.

  • Fuck you if you're young, if you want a thumbs up just tell me bro. geez!

  • I loved this then and love it now decades later. :)

  • the forever alone song

  • I'm 62 and love Simon & Garfunkel

  • Simon and Garfunkel: Doing Emo better 40 years earlier >:D

    SUCK IT, ATREYU!
