  • Great piece! I especially like Andre Rieu's version.

  • @thep51dliberated7 what's Rieu's version called?

  • This music has sparked in me a desire to conquer my neighbors land.

  • This was originally written for piano 4 hands; I don't believe Schubert orchestrated it.

  • If this was a national anthem everyone there would die for their country

  • This blows John Philip Sousa outta the water. It's so dynamic for a march---quite emotional, too!

  • When I hear this tune I'm tempted to:

    A) Start a revolution

    B) Ride a horse

    C) Both

  • @UNDENATUREDisaword

    i go for C

  • So Wonderbar .... Nice for a birthday boy

  • Little King's Story!!!

  • LOLLOL

  • does someone has the cartoon eversbody talks about?^^

  • la leyenda cuenta q schubert q eran amigos con beethoven y q slia y obserbava a beethoven cuaquiera de los dos exelentes musicos

  • I am a descendant of one of his sisters on my fathers side. =)

Otroligt!

  • This was one of the tunes that my grade school band loved to play (circa 1960). We didn't know that it was "Classical" music just a cool tune that we really belted out every time our band instructor had us play it.

  • I have a game on my old nintendo called Captain Comic, and it uses this song. Now i'm so happy I found the original version! I love this song

  • For a moment, I thought he was holding a dart in his hand.

That alone would have made him a cool composer.

  • Incredible...

  • i prefer russian but i have to recognize that there is great composers in germany and austria like schumann and schubert

  • Franz Schubert, there are no words to discribe my love for his music ...

German and Austrian composers above all.

  • Thank God for a college education and a new found appreciation for this type of music.

  • @Ballerfella2007 You mean you wouldn't have ever discovered Schubert if it wasn't for college? Didn't you like music before going to college? Most people like music. And it's good to experiment with new things, including music: if you do, then you, as a rule, discover new things that make your life more exciting and diverse.

  • @xXvolhvXx Very true, I knew and liked all of these great musicians since age 7. But actually learning in theory, which I found very interesting of the composers. I listen to them more while in college and now after college I am glad I learned more about them that’s all. .

  • @Ballerfella2007 Huh? Music education isn't part of your high school curricula?

  • @595o Yeah it was

  • 10 people tought the dislike button was the download button

  • Al hijo de puta del anuncio hay que matarlo

  • i think i heard this in super pang

  • ahh how i love classic music.

this is 100 times better than rock and the eternal crazy screaming of women at those concerts.

with other words, this is MUSIC. this is ART.

  • I heard this when I watched the silly symphony short Santa's workshop on my VHS tape "A Walt Disney Christmas".

  • @1993joshualiu VHS :-))) I always watch in VHS when I was little :-)))..

  • weird, I didn't read the comment, but I heard this and immediately thought of the Sweden national anthem or something

I've been to Sweden so maybe there's a memory buried somewhere in my head

  • I love this piece. Fell in love with it ever since hearing it in Brando's 'The Men'. Why don't they make music like this today..? I heart classical music :-)

  • @RiaAmberTesia Who doesn't?? Really?? I love Classical more than any genre of music..

  • WoW! this composer Franz Schubert wrote over 1000 composition in just 31 years!!!!

  • Back in the early 1950s there were a lot of classical music recordings used for everything from movies to television show theme music to commercial ads. I suppose because so many were in the public domain and therefore cheap to use. But I love it; I wish more shows these days focused on classical.

  • I have to play this in a few weeks in my schools 8th grade band. So im pretty phsyced. I have to play from 0:00 to 2:18

  • I 've heard this music before in a cartoon of Disney with Santa Claus which I was watching when I was a kid. What a coincidence!

  • old school is great

  • J'adore cette musique

  • Thumps up if Bayonetta brought you here.

  • @MrShootinputin Thumbs up if craving for some Schubert awesomeness brought you here.

  • @NetherDrakeye - Cheers from a fellow Schubert lover. And btw Arpeggione with Miklos... and Andras Schiffer packs a whole ton of awesomeness!

  • Who is playing this?

  • @duongngocvuminh oh no please don't say that austrians are austrians and germans are germans. we only speak the sane language...

  • In Sweden, we play this song while watching Donald Duck on christmas.

    True story.

  • @oenijo03

    jaja!

  • @oenijo03

Why in Sweden everyone whatch Donald Duck on christmas?

And why this song while you watching TV?

  • @Bastiii1990 A rather odd Swedish holiday tradition is to watch a sort of Disney Christmas special with a lot of shorts and scenes from different films being presented as postcards.

The short is named "Santa's Workshop" if you want to find it.

As to why we watch it? Probably a tradition from back when that show was one of the few cartoons shown on TV.

The two most important parts of a Swedish Christmas are the ham and Donald Duck on TV. It might be the most watched show in Swedish TV history.

  • @PregnantOrc

Okay, thank you for that information. This tradition is funny, but very nice.

And why Swedish persons all listen to this song of Franz Schubert on christmas?

    Greetings from Germany

  • @Bastiii1990 Might have been to vague on why we all listen to this one. It's simply because it is part of the show, we don't put it on by itself.

Near the end of the short mentioned (Santa's Workshop) this song plays while the toys march into Santa's delivery sack.

At 4:19 in watch?v=Jm_HUhHKWC0 you'll see the part.

  • @Bastiii1990 several decades of tradition

  • @oenijo03 that is so random, but IKEA rocks, so yeah!

  • @oenijo03 How I wish I lived there instead of in the U.S....

  • @oenijo03 there was a christmas silly symphonies with this song in it i think

  • @oenijo03 I suppose you can still listen to this March without necessarily watching Donald Duck; don't you think?!? Well, it's up to you, really...

  • @oenijo03 I suppose you can still listen to this March without necessarily watching Donald Duck; don't you think?!? Well, it's up to you, really...

  • @oenijo03 well actually its not played during donald duck but in "Santa's Workshop" from 1932 thats played together with a clip from donald duck's "Clown of the Jungle" in an old disney preview compilation that's on the air every christmas.

:) yeah, we swedes are very fond of traditions.

  • @oenijo03

that is funny to know......(I would never have associated Schubert with Donald Duck) ,it made me smile (o:

  • @oenijo03 There is a disney movie featuring this song, and a feature of this movie with donald duck as a protagonist fending off his pesky nephews. Its great, I remember this movie fondly,

  • @oenijo03 I too can attest to the story's veracity; I have been living in Sweden for many years and I still somewhat find myself baffled and at the same time amused by my friends all humming along to Schubert while Santa packs his big bag with toys in some Disney cartoon from the 30s. And this is what seems to pass for the very essence of Christmas in Sweden. I love my adopted homeland.

  • @oenijo03 Sweden and swedish music: FAMOUS!

  • @oenijo03 In Soviet Russia, this song plays us while watching christmas on Donald Duck

  • @oenijo03

Uh we do? It's part of the Santa's Workshop bit, yeah.

  • @oenijo03

    you guys are funny

  • This is pretty boss but nothing beats tchaikovsky's marche slav. another song about going to war but tchaikovskiys seems much more dramatic to me.

  • @duongngocvuminh:

    no, thats absolutely not true.

  • @lokuzzz LoL can you tell me more,i just heard that so...

  • @duongngocvuminh

why dont you check wikipedia, it can better explain this then me here with 500 chars.

  • @lokuzzz LoL =))

  • EPIC

  • Love this piece, thanks for posting.

  • playing this for school band

  • Brilliant. Although written for piano-duo the orchestral version has so much more 'oomph' !

  • I played this piece (the version for solo player) when I made my concert debut in 1965, and practiced so hard and so long to make sure I got it right. My pants were falling down when I walked up the stairs to the stage and the crowd laughed at me, but I sat down, got out the music, and played the piece with no mistakes ! And I got a standing ovation. It is hard, but a worthy piece for an aspiring pianist. And I'm glad I worked so hard and did so well and am glad of it to this day.

  • Im playing this for a solo!!!!!

  • im glad i choose to play this song as a solo on my euphonium.

  • I can play this song on the piano

  • I'm playing this for a solo!

  • This almost makes me believe that it was better before. Almost :P

  • Looks like he's holding a dart xD

  • @Treyppa its a pen

  • @wogheliwogheli It's not a regular pen, it's a music pen. Just a small correction. I was there!

  • It is excellent performance!

  • Argentina presente,Schubert genio, que hermosa marcha, quien diria que un dia seria la que festejaria la conquista de Francia.

  • Argentina presente

  • This song is oddly familiar...I've heard it years ago when I was 5.

  • @borgoat21 By a chance, if you have ever played a game called Super Buster Bros. for SNES, the Germany stage has this piece as its theme song.

  • @borgoat21 perhaps in a disney video? I remember one in Santa's shop, where this song played as the toys were being made. The greatest part was the dolls as all said ma-ma when they came out of the machine and Santa inspected them, except a black one that came out and shouted MAHMAH! lol XD

  • @Fa771n9 Lol I remember that cartoon, loved it!! I'm really hoping someone can post it on youtube, reminds me of when I was a kid!

  • @Fa771n9 It's played every chistmas eve here in Sweden.

  • @abzsskola Is Schubert a common name in Sweden? I know that it is originally of German extraction

  • @borgoat21 It plays in the old C64 version of "Joust"

  • is the main song for military marches?

  • brasil

  • this is in the swedish tv show on christmas ;) SOOO GoD watch it every year

  • Very nice recording and great job uploading . I have a German rendition on Odeon from about 1929 .. someday i'll learn how to post here .. thks.

  • <------- FLUTE!

  • Carajo es la misma que los nacis tocan en la conquista de francia al pasar por el arco de la derrota, no me habia dado cuenta, no se rian es mejor tarde que nunca JA-JA que lindssonlas marchas. lastima la sangre.

  • I remember playing this on my trumpet...

  • I like classic music, hip hop, hard rock, allmost anything except for rap and classic rock. I know it's a weird combination. But I listen classic music when I'm tierd of loud music :)

  • @Hollandblauwegirl lol heavy balck metal <.< sounds liek wtf r they saying

  • listening to this again makes me wonder how I managed to play it on the piano all those years ago It was one of my favorites though.

  • One must consider, before jumping to sanctimonious judgments, that war wasn't viewed as the horrible devastation as we know it today. There was this policy during the 18th century (to which almost all rulers subscribed) that you should make war in such a way that the people barely notice there's a war on. During the early 19th century, many still considered that to be valid, and that the Napoleonic Wars were an unfortunate exception.

  • Soldiering was considered a profession like any other, and it played an important role in society and economy. Garrisons not only consumed goods, but also served as manufactories and trading centres (soldiers mass-produced mostly clothing and shoes when they weren't on campaign).

On top of that, many of the influential noblemen were also officers. It was therefore quite prestigious to be or associate with an officer.

  • LOL! Kalle Ankas julafton here I come! :D :D

  • Wonderful!

  • I can't explain how much I like this tender march!!! :-))) makes me very happy!

  • "war is beautifal for those who have never experienced it" - Platon, ancient greek philosopher. the old man had a point to say the least...

    Either way beautiful music 5 / 5

  • Had a Boston Pops recording of March Militaire on an old Victor 78 when I was a kid. Played it over and over and over. Thanks for the memory and for sharing this wonderful music.

  • Wonderful music, wonderfully performed!

  • Yes, music like this should have many more views........It's irritating to see trash like "rap and "hip hop" with a million views and good music languishes, largely unheard. Incidentally you've posted very good music which I appreciate, TheWickedNorth.

  • @SpeedyNeutrino43

I don´t like hip hop and similar things either, but quality is just a matter of taste, don´t you think? ;)

  • Nice to hear the European tempo interpretation! Who is this preforming?

  • kick ass

  • very good !!!!!

  • Is it just me or is this interpretation a bit slow?

  • @MJV47

    i think it's good

  • no i agree it is, however this is probably a relatively historic tempo, written as a military march it was made at an agreeable tempo for regiments to parade in, and seeing how most European nations use a goosewalk or similar march that progresses at a slower tempo than the american knee-height march this slower tempo would have been rather necissary

  • Gotta love Schubert.

  • @potassiumchlorate i agree thumbs down was a mistake STUPID COMPUTER!!! sorry

  • I love it!

  • Must reveal one thing, Franz is unbelievable!!!!

  • This is music to march for

  • Agree!!!!!!

  • wow, that was fantastic =D

  • Extra!

  • there's quite a difference between making actual wars and composing music about war is'nt there? i'd much rather have people write music about anger and agression than act upon theire agressive impulses.

  • Do you think like that???? This piece is an ode to one one Empire and Franz Joseph II who was the master of this state. In that time was usually.

  • @vuk1973july There never was a Franz Joseph II.

Franz Joseph I (if you mean him) was born 2 years after Schubert died.

There was a Joseph II, but he died 7 years before Schubert was born.

During Schubert's lifetime, Austria was ruled by Franz II, who after 1804 called himself Franz I. He was a rather mediocre emperor, and not very popular with his people.

  • @spiderlime yeah but tis was for a victory parade

  • @spiderlime If only everyone did that, the warld would be so beautifull

  • @spiderlime without aggression there would never have been democracy ....

  • @spiderlime Hate to break it to you, but "IS'NT", "AGRESSION" and "THEIRE" are not real words.

  • so?

  • @spiderlime I believe this was composed having in mind the pride of belonging to the army or the cavalry, not about anger or war.

  • lol this is on little kings story =P

  • Classical music such as this should have much more views

  • @Darkpup15 classical music such as this should have much less views.. only iluminated and gods blesseds people :D

then average people should die :D srry my english..

  • @wdabrilvi Just two plain simple characters with some dots is all I've got to say to you:

    F... y..

You can fill in the gaps.

It's plain ignorant and discriminating to think that only illuminati (who are against the church btw...) and Christians should have the right to listen to this music. I don't believe in a god, but I love this music. If only you learned to open your eyes....

  • @wdabrilvi xd vos*

  • @wdabrilvi Besides, you don't know the least bit of me, so you can't tell I'm mediocre, nor anything else about me. To assume you're better than me in anyway only tells me you could use some lessons in being humble and having respect for your brethren; something I think SHOULD be kept high by someone who claims to be "enlightened" or "blessed by God".

I've seen people, both Christians and non-Christians, who deserve those titles more than you.

Beside all this, I wish you have a good day.

  • @wdabrilvi First off, I'm an animal indeed, just like you and all other humans. To have the slightest feeling of being elevated above nature is as ignorant as it is selfish.

I read very well what you wrote and yes, I know I used the wrong form of illuminated (illuminati), since it means exactly the same and illuminated is a wrong choice of words in my opinion.

I know how to read and write very well, I even read your post completely, but since I can't answer in Spanish, I decided to use English.

  • @Darkpup15 it only shows how degenerative our society is, Justin Bieber's "Baby" has a third of a billion views already

  • @Darkpup15

I think over 130.000 is a petty good number in views (o:

  • @SiggyStern not compared to, hm, Lady Gaga, who has 200 million +

  • @Lity10 200 million + are all artistically retarded, we 130,000 are with a high taste for art.

  • @0011486 make that 170,000

  • i'm learning this song in my classical guitar group rite now!!! and its really fun to play

  • i found out about this song in school and i LOVE it

  • leaving aside the philosophical arguments for and against war this is still a nice piece of music

  • Walt Disney used it for one of his christmas cartoon...

  • oh i played this but in a clarinet quartet :)

  • At that time, even war was an art. Today it is just a technological matter.

  • Absolutely. Battles that left thousands dead and even more people wounded without any medical attention are a work of art...

Sorry, but military marches are a celebration of an inhuman meatgrinder that slaughters the innocent and spares the corrupted.

That said, it is an amazing piece of musicc!

  • Bloody pacifists. They always seem to ignore the fact that even in violence, there is skill. Skill in anything, no matter what it is, is an artform. Violence is human. Otherwise, non-violence would be the norm for all societies. Oddly, for every pacifist society, there exist thousands of warring societies, and ALL those pacifists lived under the protection of warring societies. Survival cannot be achieved by flight alone. Once in a while, you got to use force. Inhuman? Seems totally human to me!

  • Sorry, but I am not a pacifist. Violence can be legitimate, yet the wars in the period in which this march was written had nothing to do with survival, the only justified case of violence. They where only for the personal glory of an insane ruler, and occasionally religion was thrown in too.

Besides, war cannot be an art. Art is self-expression through creative impulses. War isn't personal, nor is it creative. Some cultures thought it was (Aztecs for example), but it has never been in Europe.

  • That is a very pacifistic perspective, to say that personal survival is the only justified form of violence. The armies of the 19th century fought for personal survival. The military was a living and armies secured economic resources that allowed their families and the nations they supported to flourish. Those who die lose everything but those who live often gain in the LONG TERM. Violence can get things done. The hard part is maniplulating things such that one gains, not loses, in the end.

  • War is aweful. You can it humanistic. You should look up the word humanistic. It IS inhuman. You don't look at a war and say "how beautiful" or "well, that's natual" if you feel no hard/sad feelings about war, cruelty and brutality you are inhuman. Humen are one of the only kind who cares for others - love is human - war and brutality is just a reaction when we face something we cannot handle rationally.
