All of you whining and bitching about your Aussie herding kids...RESEARCH THE DAMN BREED BEFORE YOU BUY! They are a HERDING group, so don't penalize them for herding, it's their job. Ugh, I hate clients who don't research into a dog first. This dog needs a job, if you don't give it one, then it'll go nuts. I'm going to be a vet tech, so I've learned about this.
One of my earliest memories is going to get our Aussie and trying to name him. My sister and I called him "Brother" until we settled on a name. Sadly, he died my first year of college. He was a great dog. I miss him.
My Aussie DOES herd kids. He will bite ankles and everything. They need LOTS of brushing and I've only had 1 eye problem, cherry eye, with him. I LOVE my Aussie and wouldn't trade him for ANYTHING.
I had a blue merle with marble eyes. Great dog, really smart an energetic. However, mine as well as a few others that I've met, can be quite territorial. Great with immediate family, but pretty much had to be kept in a room when visitors came by. He was picky about other dogs too. Some he would play with, and others he would fight. Fearless is another attribute. As the video says, coat needs work or it will mat up badly, especially on the chest, belly.
@cguyrr haha, well it might just take some practice, I was trying to teach mine how to catch food, and she just let bounce off her face and pick it up off the floor, but she eventually got sick of getting hit in the face with a piece of hot dog and finally just started catching it.
.fidocastingcall.ca/dogs/25837 my dog is an ausralian shepard and im trying to get votes for her to be in an ad, dont mean to spam but if u just took a look at her and voted that would be great, her name is lovely and she has half a blue eye
Now I finally know what my dog is haha. We knew he was half Chihuahua but he was too big to be one and his fur wasn't like a Chihuahua, so we knew he was half of another breed of dog, since he likes running A LOT and the only stuffed animal he will play with is a sheep stuffed animal, nothing else. So we figured, Australian Shepherd. My dog is an Austr-exican! :D
Shut the hell up about the accents people, this is about a wonderful dog breed!! Just be open minded because there's not just one way to say things. -.-
My friend has a Australien shepard and a german shepherd and she just keeps them in the house alll day long they are working dogs and she does nothing with them !!! great...... on one of the most beutiful dogs in the world video's there are the top comments complaining and saying what annoys them about the video :( If iannoys you then dont watch it...... Im not trying to be rude, Im just trying to prove a point :)
No tail? Just because in the US docking a tail is allowed, in Germany you usually only see Aussies with tail and they do have a really beautiful tail!
@kerryb723 I can understand it, but here is another viewpoint. Language changes over time, and if a change is clear to all, it can be incorporated into the books, and is no longer considered wrong. Used above, for example--and I am assuming it is wrong due to your comment, the use is clear--for emphasis and thus it doesn't bother me. I won't even bother to look it which up proves it just doesn't concern me. But subject verb agreement, things like that, offends my ear. for this, no problem.
My mom and I always say that our Aussie is a nerd in the dog world. In his mind, everyone comes over to the house to see him. He doesn't see what's wrong with eating underwear. The only other dogs who like him are other nerd dogs and puppies. He shows off in front of new dogs by pooping right in front of them. My boyfriend and I play wrestle, and in protest my dog will bark bark bark, then go grab a toy. But there's no doubt in my mind if we were in serious danger, he'd do anything to protect.
I have owned to Aussies - 1 that passed in June and my new pup now - I have become obsessed with this breed - they are very amazing and I will never own anything else!! if you want a wonderful smart high energy dog this is it - they are amazing with children and are so easy to train - they aim to please and you could not ask for a more perfect animal!! I ♥ Aussies!!!
I take my Aussie for a 3 plus mile walk daily (depending on what I've got to do that day). At least, it's and hour obligation on my part; not a big deal. I like to call him "nature's personal trainer". However, I had pneumonia two years ago, and my fella did not leave my side, nor did he demand any activity, as he's got a sixth sense of what's going on. He understands the most casual of conversations and has shown his genius on many occasions, this guy has my heart.
I was considering a Doberman or a German shepherd but I may also heavily consider an Aussie if it is protective. I will have plenty of opportunity to socialize my dogs, with humans and other dogs as well, it will just be the trips where we will be alone. Also I am curious if a German shepherd would even be a good choice as it has a history of hip displesia. I reeaaallllllyyy hope I can get an answer, Thanks! Also I was thinking maybe even a Husky or malamute would be a good choice.
I keep taking the breed selector quiz on the animal planet website and the aussie keeps coming up however.. I am wondering if this dog is protective because I would like to have a loyal but protective dog. I am extremely active; hiking, biking, boating, trail running, and camping, and take many multi day trips which most of the time will be just me and my dog. I need a dog that can keep up with me, can be trained easily, that is very smart, and that is loyal and will always be at my side. cont
Then it's likely it's ancestors were not Australian Shepherds along the line. For example my cat was recognised as a breed that was born with a bob tail, yet she had a long one. I did some investigation and her great great grandad was a normal domestic shorthair but she didn't look anything like one !
i think i had one of these dogs, but im not sure, his hair was short and had a short noticable tail, u could see it when it wagged. other than that the color was just like this, wish i had took pictures of him! his name was SORA :D
@bombstad94 He means that Americans pronounce it "Aussie" instead of "Auzzie." Americans also pronounce the "au" slightly differently than Brits or Australians do.
Docking should be prohibited on the whole world, poor dogs, they need their tale too to talk naturally with other dogs. I don't like dogs without a tale.
If it's natural that way ok, but in the beginning they had to cut off their tales so it would once become natural short tales.
I really like Australian Shepherds, but with tale. Lukily in Europe we have mostly Australian Shephards with tales.
@rohirrim500 Actually, to dock the tails is a benefit to the dog itself. They had their tails docked in order so that if a coyote/wolf/fox/ came into the fields, the enemy wouldn't have the benefit of grabbing the dog's tail to drag it away or anything like that. So the Aussie's have the benefit in fights.
@Supercucu123 Aussies have shorter and thicker muzzles, and you will often see them without a tail in America, and their ears are down and floppy. Border collies have longer snouts, usually any type of ears, and are thinner, and with a thin tail. A lot of border collies are black and white or tri or red tri, and you might see more merle aussies than other colors.
What does everyone think about this. I was going to get and australian cattle dog named marbles but now i think im going to get one of these and name it marbles. What do you think of the name marbles? :)
My grandma has had many aussies and shes NEVER had any sheep or anything to herd and all of them were the sweetest dogs ever. They really are an amazing breed:)
biting despite having to be dealt with so the dog realises its bad; is common. If its just your mum he's biting, he needs to spend more time with her. Tell her she needs to approach him very quietly, slowly and lovingly. Offer treats from afar and after a few minutes, he SHOULD take the treats from her hand. Its not a bad thing he bites, he is also going through he is teething stage so give him something nice to bite [not wood] like a rubber toy or something. :) Good luck!
hi! i just got my new aussie, and he's three months old, it's his first day in my house, i know he has to be cautious because he's hasn't been accustomed to his new home, but he growled and barked at my mom, even when 5 hours before we walked with him and gave him a bath. i know it;s his first day and he needs to get accustomed to his new home, but can anyone give me advice? thanks!
@paoloz1998 He'll eventually get accustomed to her, but you should try the treat trick the other person told you too. Tip: Socialize your Aussie with other dogs (when he's had his shots) as much as possible when he's younger. Try to get him to be as responsive and obedient as possible too, so that if your ever at a park or anything and try to play with him, he wont run off. (My experience with mine.)
@LoveHorseDust we got 2 of our aussies from show and working lines, LOL. Our aussie-mix is really smart, Maibe (our 8 month old puppy, shes a trijem and touchstone, so working lines, but also show lines) is very smart, but she always needs to be doing something and shes just crazy! MJ (our male show dog), is our 2 year old blue merle. He's, uh, well, not the brightest bulb on the tree ;) LOL but theyre awesome. Just not super intelligent :P
@ChocolateChad127 Why does it annoy you? They just say Aussie because it's not as much of a mouthfull as Australian Shephard. Not trying to be a troll or anything, just wondering owo
It annoys me how people on here trying to make other people to say aussie the way they what them to. If people get annoy how people say aussie then they need to get a life.
@ChocolateChad127 Though in consolation, this is "Aussie" the dog breed, not even really tied to Australia. The word Aussie to refer to a person from Australia is not in common use here. That said, I try to pronounce it your way as much as possible and maybe it will catch on here.
I was thinking of either getting a Aussie or a Border Collie. I'm 12 years old, i live in Phoenix, AZ, I have a medium sized house, no backyard, i'm the only child, and i need a smart, trainable dog. Any advice?
@Shoelacebob123 No backyard? Aussie's are extremely hyper and energetic dogs. If you don't have a place for it to run around with in its free time be prepared to take it to the park at least three times a day, which i do with my aussie mix dog, because if you don't get these dogs tired out they can absoloutely drive you crazy with their built-up energy. If you're planning on getting an aussie, then you should be very athletic. If you're looking for a house dog, you should look for something calm
@mauilovin I beg to differ. Some Australians are different. They aren't all completely energetic and need work work work work work every single day. Some are laid back and for some just love your company and will do whatever you want to do. You don't have to be athletic to get an Aussie, but they do need exercise a lot, I agree. They aren't always extremely hyper either. Note to Aussie lovers/lookers: They LOVE to jump, so teaching it to jump and catch a frisbee: Piece of cake. :)
If you are committed to spending time doing things with your dog, there is no reason a nice "soft" Aussie wouldn't be right for you. Contact this breeder, and ask her who might be near you - shalako aussies As for a BC, I think you would find they aren't the right breed for you. They really are obsessed with pushing things around - which means they don't make eye contact with you. You'd be fine with the right Aussie.
aussies can have natural tails docked tails and tails....my dogs have NO tail at all not even a nub lol but it is not true about having 2 parents with natural tails...
Well yeah my Aussie actually had a tail but it was docked. He's super smart because 1. he can do tricks that stun even myself and i'm the one who taught them to him. 2. he seems to know when I'm tired because whenever we excercise and I stop, he's all energetic still and i fall down on the couch, he stares at me and then hops up and sleeps with me. 3. Aussies are great family pets and loveable and have unlimited faithfulness to their owner.
i am realt concerned i have an aussie and she is amazing ! love her more than anything !! But.... She has epilepsy and i want to get another one to keep her company but i was told epilepsy is extreamly common in australian shepards can somebody tell me if that is true ! PLEASE RESPOND !!!
@xCHUBBYxJEWx It is true in some lines - but there are plenty around that are fine. See Toby's Foundation for news of a possible hit on a gene so someday we may have a test... in the meantime, why not adopt a dog through Aussie Rescue? There's no reason you couldn't have another, and I hope you will take that leap.
@fordawsome100 It is not common to find them but yes there are a few breeders who do not believe in docking tails. I am one of them. You can view my website at w w w (dot) HighlandSpringsBreeders (dot) c o m We have puppies coming early August.
One of the great things I have found to do with my dog is to let her "herd" a red laser pointer light all around the backyard just after the sun goes down, she really tears around like crazy trying to get the spot, and it makes her really happy and tired.
i have one SHES SO CUTE AND NICE AND SWEET

@Paoloz1998;
biting despite having to be dealt with so the dog realises its bad; is common.

@ChocolateChad127 why?
Kayladiva197 5 months ago
@Kayladiva197 cos over here in Australia we pronounce "Aussie" as "Ozzi" so it does sound kinda weird hearing it as "Aasi"

hi! i just got my new aussie, and he's three months old, it's his first day in my house, i know he has to be cautious because he's hasn't been accustomed to his new home, but he growled and barked at my mom, even when 5 hours before we walked with him and gave him a bath. i know it;s his first day and he needs to get accustomed to his new home, but can anyone give me advice? thanks!
paoloz1998 5 months ago
@paoloz1998 He'll eventually get accustomed to her, but you should try the treat trick the other person told you too. Tip: Socialize your Aussie with other dogs (when he's had his shots) as much as possible when he's younger. Try to get him to be as responsive and obedient as possible too, so that if your ever at a park or anything and try to play with him, he wont run off. (My experience with mine.)

LOL I love my aussies (pronounced 'ozzies'), they're not as intelligent as people make them out to be
hannahlovesmerder 5 months ago
@hannahlovesmerder Then you got bunk dogs. Because my family has been breeding them over 45yrs & YES they are!!!
LoveHorseDust 5 months ago
@LoveHorseDust we got 2 of our aussies from show and working lines, LOL. Our aussie-mix is really smart, Maibe (our 8 month old puppy, shes a trijem and touchstone, so working lines, but also show lines) is very smart, but she always needs to be doing something and shes just crazy! MJ (our male show dog), is our 2 year old blue merle. He's, uh, well, not the brightest bulb on the tree ;) LOL but theyre awesome. Just not super intelligent :P

Ilumeo 5 months ago
@ChocolateChad127 Though in consolation, this is "Aussie" the dog breed, not even really tied to Australia. The word Aussie to refer to a person from Australia is not in common use here. That said, I try to pronounce it your way as much as possible and maybe it will catch on here.

man! how this guy says aussies annoy's me, you have have to say it more like Ozzies.
but i digress, these dogs are so cute they are every were on farms and they have such beautiful eyes

I was thinking of either getting a Aussie or a Border Collie. I'm 12 years old, i live in Phoenix, AZ, I have a medium sized house, no backyard, i'm the only child, and i need a smart, trainable dog. Any advice?
Shoelacebob123 6 months ago
@Shoelacebob123 No backyard? Aussie's are extremely hyper and energetic dogs. If you don't have a place for it to run around with in its free time be prepared to take it to the park at least three times a day, which i do with my aussie mix dog, because if you don't get these dogs tired out they can absoloutely drive you crazy with their built-up energy. If you're planning on getting an aussie, then you should be very athletic. If you're looking for a house dog, you should look for something calm
mauilovin 6 months ago 12

@smbmaniac Aww poor doggy :(
cody1902guy 6 months ago

PLEASE RESPOND !!!
xCHUBBYxJEWx 6 months ago
@xCHUBBYxJEWx It is true in some lines - but there are plenty around that are fine. See Toby's Foundation for news of a possible hit on a gene so someday we may have a test... in the meantime, why not adopt a dog through Aussie Rescue? There's no reason you couldn't have another, and I hope you will take that leap.

One of the great things I have found to do with my dog is to let her "herd" a red laser pointer light all around the backyard just after the sun goes down, she really tears around like crazy trying to get the spot, and it makes her really happy and tired.
