some players sang only one song, some players sang both songs. Does that mean they have different political view about their country? sorry, but I don't understand. If they do not identify themselves as the same, why they still have to play together as one team? why not play as ireland and northern ireland?
@ususopen Ireland's Call is a song commissioned by the Irish Rugby Football Union for use at international Rugby Union fixtures.teams.While "Amhrán na bhFiann" is the national anthem of the Republic of Ireland, and has been used by some Irish Olympic teams, its use arouses sensitivities among those with Unionist sympathies in Northern Ireland.[1] Equally, the national anthem of Northern Ireland, as part of the United Kingdom, is God Save The Queen

Doc a raison.

I'm sure you are. Unfortunately your age has nothing to do with your knowledge of a modern European country like Ireland and appears to be the norm in the USA for all the descendants of Irish emigrants.
Not your fault. Ireland is a multicultural place now where there is no place for bigotry and anti-English sentiments.
I have been to Ireland and I understand the culture pretty well. I know that a lot of Polish citizens have gone to Ireland for work. I know its about of the European Union.
Anything else I wanted to know I can read in the Irish times. I know also that the Irish economy as around the world isn't that great right now.
Also your wrong about there not being any room for anti English sentiments. Its called being human.
There are people that still don't like the English for the American Revolution.
some of the words in english means in valley green or towering crag our fathers fought before us and conquered the same old flag thats floating over us were children of a fighting race that never yet has known disgrace and as we march the foe to face weel chant a soldiers song this is sung at the start tiochfaidh ar la
Ireland's call is one of the most beautiful anthem in the world... a rugby anthem I love. Even if I'm french, I could cry with this crowd who sings this song of freedom.
Well done guys and good luck for the next six nations.
What caused all the emotion was the fact that a team of irish players were shot dead by british soldier on this very pitch. Anyway nice to move on positivly in the future.
Not quite ! They killed one Irish player - Michael Hogan from Tipperary - and also thirteen innocent spectators. This was their brave response to the assassination of a group of British spy's by the IRA that same morning.
To put it in context can you imagine a bunch of Nazi's shooting into the crowd at the Stade de France in retaliation for the actions of the French Resistance ?
But I do agree that we should all move on but not without paying due respect to some of those who got us here !
i'm sorry, i dont quite follow your argument. if you feel the impulse to make such sweeping statements, i'd advise you to go off and read some history books before you make a fool of yourself on a social network.
We were neutral because at that time our country was just establishing itself as a nation. We had finally won our freedom from the British after 800 years of oppression, and lets just say we had a lot of work on our hands... If we had enter a war at that time it would have set us back, we had already been fighting for long enough and needed a break to sort things out. Anyway, at the time I'm sure if the Irish did get involved we wouldn't have made much of a difference...
I am so confused. Which song is the official anthem of Ireland? Soldier's Song or Ireland's Call? Why did they sing both? Which one will be played in the Olympics?
amhran na bhfiann (soldier's song) is the republic of ireland's national anthem, not the whole of ireland, but i don't know what they'd play at the olympics, sorry
A Soldier's Song (Amhrán na bhFiann) is the Irish national anthem that the ROI sing and because it Irish rugby team consists on people from both north and south they sing Ireland's Call because it doesnt offend people and as for the olympics go people from the north con choose who they want to play for either GB or Ireland so then A Solider's song will be played
haha crap look at tht old bald guy next 2 o driscol cryin wot a pussy we beat u scumbags 16 12 and we got grand slam beat tht CYMRU AM BYTH!! Oh yh how many times u got grand slam?? haha
tageulle gros con plein de merde, gros bouffon ptite bibite retourne ds ton pays dmerde de gagalle let u eat by english peaple in ure fuckin country where fukin bastars like live hahahahahaha in ure fukin countre where there arent welsh but ENGLISH hahahahahahahahahaha
have you heard the song, its bloody terrible -its not our anthem frenchy simple as that - easy for someone who sings the marseilleise to slag other countires - its fucking terrible noe get that into your thick fuckin head
no you DONT understand arsehole-'mammy i can spell and punctuate, aren't i brilliant' -back to the hamptons with you chappy how dare you be on this thread anyway..its for rugby playing fans not wankers like you..taw taw
J'en ai eu les larmes aux yeux lors de la diffusion sur fr2 je suis d'origine irlandaise et les tournois c'est important pour l 'Irlande alors les anglais à Croke Park c'est quelque chose, mais l'hymne c'est trés trés grand
I love this anthem, both parts of it. Can anyone provide some sort of phonetic translation of the Gaelic words of the first part please? And all respect to my Celtic cousins.
Soldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland, Some have come from a land beyond the wave, sworn to be free no more our ancient S'Ireland shall shelter the despot nor the slave , tonight we man the Bhearna

Extreme left is just as bad as extreme left.
The political spectrum is a spherical, not a straight line. So effectively if you're far left you're almost the same as far right, and vice versa.
Think about it, there are more similarities between Communism and Fascism than Fascism and Capitalism.

Why do you not tell about the Nazis who killed millions of europeans by burning them almost alive ?
What about the USA who killed millions of native americans and stole their lands ?
What about USA who dropped the nucleer bomb on Japanese and killied thousands of innocent babies ?
What about fascist Turkey who is one of the puppets of USA and killed millions of Armenians ?
and African they tortured, slaved and killed?

Fact is the largest non-Irish population in Ireland is English, not Polish.
Neither is there any way on this earth that you can claim that anti-English sentiment has a place anywhere.
It's called bigotry.

Which one will be played in the Olympics?
ususopen 3 years ago
amhran na bhfiann (soldier's song) is the republic of ireland's national anthem, not the whole of ireland, but i don't know what they'd play at the olympics, sorry
pozzer11 3 years ago
A Soldier's Song (Amhrán na bhFiann) is the Irish national anthem that the ROI sing and because it Irish rugby team consists on people from both north and south they sing Ireland's Call because it doesnt offend people and as for the olympics go people from the north con choose who they want to play for either GB or Ireland so then A Solider's song will be played
manutdyeha 3 years ago
If he people from the north choose to represent ireland, then Ambhrann na bhiann will be sung.
velvitjester 3 years ago 2
Soldiers Song is the Republic of Ireland's official anthem but because the team includes men from Northern Ireland (separate country)
they also sing Ireland's Call. If I remember correctly when they play abroad they only use Ireland's Call. It's confusing but it works for us.

irelands call is used because irish rugby is 32 counties and our national anthem is for the 28

pourquoi 2 himnes?
miculturaVSislam 3 years ago
princecharman 3 years ago 4
it's the other way round
the second one is Ireland's official rugby anthem and Amhrán na bhFiann is the country's anthem

I love this anthem, both parts of it. Can anyone provide some sort of phonetic translation of the Gaelic words of the first part please? And all respect to my Celtic cousins.
